TheafternoonsessionwaspresidedoverbyHisGracethe Archbishop,whoexpressedhispleasurewiththeworkofthe League.
Thereportsofallthe brancheswerereadbytheir respectivesecretaries,showingaveryfineamountof charitableworkwhichis beingdone.
Apaperon"Domestic scienceforgirlsandmanualtrainingforboysinall Catholicschools,"written byMissMartin,ofHighgate,
wasread;also"ThePapal AddresstoWomen"anda shortpaperon"Modern Marriage."
Adelightfulafternoontea wasservedbytheladiesof theMaylandsbranch,under theleadershipofMrs.Child, andwasmuchappreciated byallpresent. ThenextFederalconfer-
enceofCatholicWomenis tobeheldinthisStatefor thefirsttime.TheconferenceistobeginonOctober 28andcontinuetoNovember4.Membershopeto welcomedelegatesfrom everyStateIntheCommonwealthandwomenfrom alloverWestAustralia.

AwirefromSydneylastweekannouncedtheholydeathofa humbleRedemptoristlay-brother,whowasonceawellknownfigureinPerth.
BrotherBrendan,C.SS.R., formerlyMr.PatrickClohesy,wasborninLimerick, Ireland,74yearsago.He cametoWesternAustralia in1912withhiswifeand onlychild,who'laterbecameaSisterofMercyin thePerthArchdiocese.
Hewasastonemasonby trade,andspecimensofhis skilledandcarefulcraftsmanshipmaybeseeninthe Karrakattacemeteryandin thegracefularchesofthe newG.P.O.Menwhoworkedwithhimbeartestimony tohissterlinguprightcharacterandtohisuncompromisingCatholicfaith.
BeforeleavingIrelandhe hadbeenaprefectinthe largestmen'sConfraternity intheworld,thefamous HolyFamilyConfraternity intheChurchofthe"Holy Fathers"inLimerick.When
FatherRobinsonestablished abranchoftheconfraternityintheMonasterychurch, NorthPerth,PatrickClohesysoonhandedinhis nameasamemberofSt. Vincent'sdePaul'ssection.
Thedeathofhiswifein 1940broughtbackalongingthathehadfeltasa boy,butthathehadnever hadanopportunitytofulfil. Withheroiccourage,at63 yearsofage,heknockedat theMonasterydoorand askedtobereceivedasa lay-brother.Hewasadmitted,butnooneexpected himtoremainlong.
TheMonasteryrecordsrelatehowtheyoungBrothers smiledathiseffortstosettle intothereligiouslife;but whentheysawhimathis prayers,theysoonrealised thathewasnoordinary man.Hewasdestinedto
succeedwhereothershad failed.
HemadehisvowsonDecember30,1941.Tenyears ofprayerandhumble, childlikesubmissionbrought himtoapeaceful,holy deathonMay21,thevery daythatthefeastofhis patron,St.Brendan,was beingkeptinIreland.A fewweeksbeforehisdeath heremarkedtooneofhis religiousconfreresthatGod hadbeenverygoodtohim ingrantingtohiminhisold agewhathehadlongedfor invainasaboy."Ioweit toOurLady,"hesaid;the BlessedVirgiisverypowerfulandsoverygood."

AswellastheHolyYear badge,allpilgrimsworea widepurpleribbonwiththe Vexilliumprintedingold onit.Officersalsoworethe Legionbadge.Onarrivalat Calaiswefoundthatthe FrenchlegionarieshadarrangedMassandHoly Communionforusina hugeshedneartherailway station.Aftercoffeeand rolls,wewereinthetrain speedingofftoParis.Itis aremarkablefeatureofthe LegionofMarythatadifferenceinnationality,colour orevenlanguagedoesnot seemtomatter.TheFrench legionarieswerethesame aslegionarieseverywhere, justbubblingoverwith enthusiasmtohelpus,trying toseeandserveGod throughtheirneighbour.I noticedthesamefeelingand attitudeamongsttheItalianlegionaries.Wecould notspeakeachotherslanguagebuttherewasafeelingdeepdowninsideus, lettingusknowthatwe wereallmembersofthe samegreatarmy,endeavouringtodoourutmostto serveGodthroughMary.
Wehadthesamespecial trains(oneblue,oneyellow)totakeusthroughout France,Switzerlandand Italyandbackagainto France.Everydaythere wasMassandHolyCommunionandwerecited threeRosariesandthe Legionprayers.

beforethedoorsopenedand whentheydidopen,the scenewassovastandbeautifulthatIwasjustbewildered.Onlyonlatervisits couldIreallytakeinthe majestyandbeautyofthis, thebiggestchurchinthe world.
Duringthelongjourney fromParistoRome,the scenerywassuperb,first thelovelygreenfarming anddairyingcountryand thentheforestsofturpentinetrees,someofthem tapped,withlittlecupsto catchtheturpentine,in muchthesamewayasthe rubbertreesaretreatedin Malaya.Justbeforesunset wewereintheFrench Alps.NevershallIforget thewonderandbeautyof thosemarvellouspeakstoweringtoheaven,somerelectingthegloryofthe sunset.
Theatmosphereoffriendlinessamongthelegionaries, thepractisingoftheLatin hymnsandtheMassofthe Angels,thelearningofthe LegionprayersinLatin(so thatallnationswouldhave theonelanguage)helpedto makeitawonderfuljourney.
Wevisitedtheroomsof St.JohnBoscoandthe CathedralwheretheHoly Shroudiskept.AplaceI shallalwaysrememberfor itsmarvellousworkof mercyis"TheCottolengo" foundedbySt.JosephBenedictCottolengoin1827. Thisisatremendousplace; reallyalittleworldof humanwretchedness.There arechildren,oldpeople, chronics,thedumb,idiots, cripples,epilepticsandall thedisabledwhowanthelp eitherphysicallyormorally, allarelivingthere,gathered into"families,"accordingto theirageortheirillnesses. Thenextday,beingthe FeastoftheNativityofOur Lady,whichistheanniversaryofthefoundationof theLegion,washonoured bythecelebrationofPontificalHighMassinthe churchofSt.Maryofthe Angelsandagainthesinging ofthelegionarieswashost effective.AfterMasswe madeourwaytoSt.Mary MajorforourfinalJubilee visit.Althoughitwasearly morning,thecrowdwasterrificbothinsideandoutside thisbeautifulchurch.
ThateveningtheHoly Fatherreceivedinprivate audience100Legionofficers atCastelGandolfo.Dr. Mageeanofferedhimthe spiritualbouquet.TheHoly Fatherexamineditcarefully andexpressedhisadmirationandgratitudeforitsimmensespiritualvalue.As theLegionEnvoyswere presented,theHolyFather gavethemaspecialblessing ontheirworkintheirseveralcountries.

IwasfortunateinhavinganoldfriendinRome, EileenSlattery,oftheCottesloefamily.Eileenhas heldimportantpositions withBritishEmbassiesin Europeandforthepast threeyearshasbeenin Rome.Everyeveningshe tookapartyofussightseeing,includinganeveningattheOperaintheold RomanBaths,whichare 2000yearsold.

ChristineNeale's"Granny"wassomethingshehas everyrighttobeproudof. Itwasadmirablyconceived andveryskilfullyexecuted.. Restraintwasherguiding lightandsincerityhertitle toconviction.
JohnLuke,asBrink,was perfectlycast.Tall,spare, quietlycompellingand vaguelysinister,hecarried effortlesslythestampof anotherworld.Hisrich, deeptonesbespokecomfort andassuranceaswellasthe inexorablenessofFate.It
