Thefirstpre-Canaconferenceoftheyear, whichcommencedonFeb.23,concludedatthe VictoriaSquareconventwithanall-daysessionon March11.Theengagementringsofadozen youngwomenwereblessedintheconventchapel bytheRt.Rev.Mgr.L.JGoody.
Theconferenceconsistedof lecturesonFridaynightsonthe moralspiritualandphysiological aspectsofmarriage.The Rev.J.Depiazzishowed'afilm ontheNuptialMassandgave anexplanatorycommentary.
Ayoungmanwhoattended thecoursesaidthattheengag- edcouplesweregratefultothe
organisersfortheexcellenttalks. Theyhadcoveredmanyaspects ofmarriedlifeandillustrated howsaneandpracticalwasthe Church'sattitude."I'mperfectlysatisfied,"heconcluded, "thattheChurch'steachingis notnegativebutconstructive, andverymuchintouchwith humanlife.MyfianceandI feelthat,withtheknowledge

spent10daysasguestsofthe ChristianBrothersatWakefield-street.TheywerewelcomedatY.C.W.dances,and sawthefourthTestmatch, Thepartynextvisitedthe MaristBrothers'Agricultural collegeatMt.Gambier.Then onthroughfertileSkiptonto Ballarat,whichimpressedthem verymuch.Here,throughout thewholediocese,theyfounda well-establishedruralmovement.
BetweenMelbourneandSydneytheywereastoundedatthe continuousflowofheavytransport.At surprisedCanberra,theywere bytherichpastoralareaandatthemagnificentpro- pertyacquiredbytheGoulburn dioceseforanAgriculturalcollege,whichwillbeconducted bytheChristianBrothers.
THISSIGNPOSTONTHENULLABORwasthe harbingeronthingstocomegoingEastwards,the reminderofhappydayscominghome.
AfterajourneyacrossAustralia,inwhich theycovered8,100milesbycar,theRev.C.Cunningham,parishpriestofDardanup,accompanied byBernieDepiazzi,TomBusher,BryanO'Connor, BryanWells,AlbertPanizza,andKevinHarris,returnedtoPerthonMarch8.
Theladsaremembersofa groupOftheCatholicCountry Youthmovementinauguratedin theDardanupparishbyFather Cunningham.Theyhavereturnedfullofenthusiasmforthe movement,whichhasbeen launchedwithamembershipof 12.
Givingimpressionsofthetrip, BernieDepiazziandTomBusher saidtheyfoundtheNullabor Plaininterestingforitsdifferent typesofsoilandfauna.They campedthreenightsintheopen andpassedanaverageof12cars aday.
From passedtheEyrepeninsulathey throughinferiorWheatlandstoWyhalla,whichthe boysdescribedas"themost moderncityinAustralia."It wasmagnificentlylaidout,featuringhomegardensratherthan avenuesoftrees.
OnthroughPortPirieto Georgetown,acrosstheFlinders Range,wheretheyvisitedthe richwheatlandtowns,suchas JamestownandSpalding. ApproachingAdelaide,they wereimpressedbytherich wine-growingdistricts.Inthe SouthAustraliancapitalthey
AweekwasspentinSydney, wheretheyfoundtherushand tearexhausting.Theyvisitedmanychurches,andmostadmiredthepaintingintheFranciscanchurchatWaverley.
ThevisittoMountKosciusko wasahighlightofthetrip,for within10milesofitssummit theysawthepreparatoryworkforthegiganticSnowyRiver scheme-drilling,channelling, andthebeginningofthetunnels.
Thepartythenpassedthrough theAustralianAlpstoGipps- land,viaSaleandBairnsdale (wherethereisagemofa church),andsotoMelbourne,wheretheywitnessedthefifth Testmatch.
Fortymilesfromthecity,at Tynong,theyinspectedaCatholicruralsettlementorganisedby FatherPooley,whereCatholic familiesareengagedinacooperativehomebuildingventure. whereTheyalsovisitedHorsham, theywereentertainedby FatherLinnane,whogavethem agoodinsightintothepractical operationoftheC.C.Y.movement.
Theinter-branchcompetitionfortheArchbishop'sshield,combinedwiththe.majorportion oftheclubchampionships,washeldattheLeedervilleovalMarch10,andwasattendedbyagood numberofenthusiasticspectators.
JohnO'ConnellandPercyJerrattdead-heatedfor seniorchampionathlete;FrankO'Connellwonthe junior;P.ClarkeandC.Creedtiedforthesub-juniortitle.ClaremontbranchcapturedtheArchbishop'sshield.
Someveryfineracingwas seen,manyoftheeventsbeing wononlybyinches,andseveral oftheathletesshowedpromise ineventsinwhichtheydidnot haveanopportunitytocompete duringtherecentSeason.These performanceshaveallbeen notedbythecoachandwillassisthimingettingthebestpossibleresultsinnextseason's interclubcompetitions.
Asanticipated,keentussles occurredintheeffortstogain thecovetedtitleofchampion athletesinthevariousgrades. IntheSeniorchampionship, JohnO'ConnellandPercyJerrattdead-heatedwith28points andwerecloselyfolloWedby GerryLambewith26points.
John,whohadonlyarrived backfromTasmaniaafew hoursbeforethesports,showed wonderfulstaminaandhiscourageouseffortalsomadeitpossibleforhisbranchtowinthe Archbishop'sshield.Percyalso showedgoodall-roundability: heisprobablythemostimprovedathleteintheclubandwe expecthimtobewellinthe limelightnextyear.Gerry almostmadeitatripledeadheatforthetitle,asoneofhis secondplacingswasinthehalfmileinwhichhewentunder byaboutafoot.
Thejuniorchampionshipwas wonbyFrankO'Connellwith atotalof54pointsfromBrian Foleywith40points.Ifthe O'Connellbrotherscontinue withtheirrunofsuccesses,it maybenecessaryfortheirparentstoapplyforapermitto buildaspecialtrophyroomattachedtotheirresidence.Brian Foleyisalsoapromisingathleteandwonsixeventsinthe competition.

However,aphototakenatthe finishofthelatter,castsdoubt ontheaccuracyofthejudge's decisionanditappearsthatBill mayhavebeenunluckynotto gettheverdict.Thejudgingof sprintracesisextremelydifficultandmistakeswhichmay occurinsuchclosefinishes seemunavoidableattimes. Perhapsthedaymaynotbefar distantwhenphoto-finisheswill beusedinsuchcircumstances. Theotherchurcheshaveforthemostpartbeencontenttomakeuseofthesecularsystem.Nowtheseare graduallybeing-ledtoseethewisdomoftheCatholicprocedure,andthenecessityofprovidingreligionintheschools inordertopreventareturntopaganism.Unfortunately, however,theydonotappeartorealisethenecessityofa definitedoctrinalteaching;oriftheydo,theyaretookeen onattainingunitywithoutsidechurchesto...putthatprincipleintopractice.AChairofTheologythatmightbe consideredundenominationalincharacter-oracold,dispassionatestudyofcomparativereligion,intheUniversity, mightsuitthemverywell.butitcertainlywouldnutsatisfytheCatholicideal.IfchurchorcreedorChrstianity aretohaveanymeaning,itmustbethattheyproclaim.a definitecodeofdoctrine.Theveryderivationoftheword religionimpliesthat.Itdemandsadefinitecodeofdoctrineaswellasaconsistentcodeofmorals,towhichsubjectsmustsubmitwithoutanyalternativeorcompromise. Asapracticalmeasuretowardsasolutionoftheproblem, FatherBryan,inconsultation withHisLordshipBishopGummer,undertookthetaskofdevelopinganerstwhileabandoned station,knownasWhiteSprings, andsituated100milessouthof PortHedland,asacentreforthe educationandvocationaltrainingofnativechildren.Itis plannedalsotomakeprovision forthemedicalcareofnatives andindigents.
SincehetookoverthispropertyattherequestoftheGovernmentin1949,FatherBryan hasliterallyaccomplishedwonders.Hehasreconstructedthe

November7,1950.AtanaudiencefortheArchbishop,His HolinessPopePiusXII,expressedpleasureovertheerectionof sucharuggedcommunityofSistersfortheirarduousworkin the"outback."
Besidestheirindoorhabti, theRosarySistershaveanoutdoorgarbwithcloakandhatfor theirdifficulttreks.The"conventonwheels"consistsofacar andtrailer,besidewhichthey canerectakindoflean-totent inwhichtheygiveinstructionto children.Theyhaveauthority toreservetheBlessedSacrament inthisconventonwheels,and Massissaidtherewhennoother placeisavailable.
Themissionarytreksofthese Sistersmaylastaslongasfive weeks,withdistancesupto100 milestobecovered.Arriving atanisolatedlocality,they gatherthechildrenfromthesurroundingareafor instruction. Theyvisithomestoestablish contactswithparents,andrendermaterialaidwhentheycan. Theysupplementthesevisits withnine-yearmailcorrespondencecoursesforchildren,and alsoforadults,conductedfrom theirheadquartersatHobartand Longford,knownasRosary Houses.

Thedemocraticworldlacksa Charterofwhatitguarantees toitspeople.Itisessentialthat suchaChartershouldbeprovidedandthat,onceprovided,it shouldbescrupulouslyobserved bybigandsmallnationsalike. Itshouldbethebanneraround whichthosewhobelieveinnational,personal,politicalandreligiouslibertythroughoutthe worldcanrally."

TherewerenomajordevelopmentsinAnglo-Irishrelations sinceSt.Patrick'sDay1950'It willberecalledthatthegood relationsbetweenthetwo countriessufferedasetbackin May1949whentheBritishGovernmentsoughttogivefresh legislativesanctiontothePartitionofIrelandfollowingthe enteringintofcfceinIreland, inMay1949,oftheRepublicof IrelandAct.Asaresultofthis ActtheRepublicofIrelandwas specificallyrecognisedassuch bytheStatesoftheworld.
Progressinagricultureand industrycontinuedsteadilyin P1950.UndertheLandReclamationProjectwhichisnowbeing operatedineverycountyin theRepublic,riversanddrains are andbeingdeepenedandwidened, landthathasformany yearslainunderwaterisreap- pearingtoservethenation's productionneeds.
Greatmachinesboughtfrom theUnitedStateswithdollars suppliedbytheEuropeanCooperationAdministrationhave beenbroughttoeveryarea wherethereisworktobedone. Theplainpeople,moreusedto thetraditionaldonkeyandcart intheirquietwaysofliving, todayseethesegiantmachines nosingtheirsoddenwaythrough thelowmeadowesleavingbehind themsilverlanesofwater rushingtofinditsownlevelin thedistantrivers,andthento thesea,

theshallowbowl.-Thesemachinesaresmashingthroughthe rimofthesaucer,asitwere, drainingoffthesurpluswaters, andwhoshallsaywithwhat resultstentwentyorthirty yearshence?
Itisnotlikelythatthevast bogsinthecentreoftheisland willdisappear,butcertainly theywillbelessenedinextent.
Irelandhasbeenlikenedtoanhowever,doesnotseemtohave avastamountofwaterlyinginsideofthenarrowseaseparating twocountrieswhicheconomicallyaswellasgeographicallyare veryclosetogether.Despitethefar-from-briefchroniclesof Anglo-Irishrelationsandthe long-establishedtradecontacts betweenthetwocountries,there remainsmuchwhichthepeoples ofbothcountriesmight,with advantage,learnabouteach other.
Ontheindustrialside,afew figuresmayservetoillustrate theprogressmadesincethelast yearforwhichstatisticsare available.Thelatestcomplete censusofproductionavailable showsthatthenetoutputof industryfortheyear1948was £75,000,000,anincreaseof £9,000,000overthenetindustrialproductionfor1947.Industrialemploymentreached 198,000in1948,beinganadvanceof14,000ascompared with1947.Completefiguresfor theyear1949arenotyetavailablebutthenumbersemployed inindustryareestimatedto havereachedafigureof206,000 -thehighesteverrecorded.
Themeasureofindustrial progressmadeasaresultofthe effortsofsuccessiveGovernmentsmaybegaugedfromthe factthatintheyear1926-the firstyearforwhichanindustrialcensuswastaken-netindustrialoutputwasonly £23,000,000andindustrialemp- loyment102,000.Changingprice levelshaveofcourseaffected thevalueofindustrialoutput, butitisnoteworthythatindustrialemploymenthasdoubled sincethe1926censusofpro- duction.
Thepositionwhichthetouristindustryoccupiesinthegen- eraleconomy'ofIrelandisdemonstratedbythefactthatin 1949netearningsfromtourists, travel,etc.,wereestimatedat £28million.Inthefieldof dollarearningstheimportance oftourismgreatlytranscends thatofcommodityexports.It hasbeenestimatedthatour totaldollarreceiptsfor1949 amountedto30milliondollars, and12milliondollarsofthat totalcamefromtourists,while weearned1.8milliondollars fromcommodityexports.Itis tLear, therefore,thatriotonlyis ourismourmostimportant sourceofdollarearningsat present,butthatitsfullerexp-loitationanddevelopmentoffer themostpromisingopportunity ofsecuringarapidandsubstantialincreaseinthoseearnings, anditfollowsthatinexisting worldconditionstheGovernment'schiefconcernmustbeto stimulateanincreaseindollar tourism.

Irelandalsooffersto-dayan exampleofanendeavourbythe Statetoundotheneglectof centuriesbyproviding,where privateinvestmentisinadequate, forlarge-scalecapitalinvestmenttostrengthentheeconomy generally.Landrehabilitation. arterialdrainage,extensiverural electrification,municipalhousing,hospitalbuilding,harbour development,socialsecurity, publichealth-allthesearefeaturesofnationalreconstruction andsocialandeconomicadvancementasIrelandentersthe secondhalfofthetwentiethcentury."

ThemaincriticismofSaturday'sconcertasawholewas thattheorchestraseemedtobe slippingbackintothebadold habitofnotlookingattheconductor.Probablythecauseof thiswastheinclusionofseveral newworkswithwhichtheorchestrawasnotfamiliar,andit wasmostnoticeableinthePersianDancefromMoussorgsky's unfinishedopera,"Khovanstina." Theresultwasalossoftheexcitementthatliftsthisworkout oftherutofmonotony.
Theopeningoverturewascompletelynewtomostoftheaudience,includingmyself,The
Russiancomposer,Gliere,wrote the"FriendshipofPeoples"to commemoratethemeetingofthe BigThreeinMoscow,anditisa fineworkmusically,intricate incharacterwithinteresting changesofrhythm,but,despite itsmusicalworth,itisnotlikely totakeahighplaceintheconcertrepertoire,asitsomehow failstocapturetheimagination.
"SomersetRhapsody,"byGustavHoist,isanotherseldomheardwork,andtheorchestra gaveaveryniceperformanceof it.ThereisnothingcomplicatedaboutthissimplelittlephantasyonthreefolksongscollectedbyCecilSharp,andtheresultisanengaginglittlepiece withimmediateappeal.There seemedtobesomemistakein theprogrammeannotations, whichfailedtogiveanymentiontothecoranglaissoloat thebeginning,creditingthe oboeswithapassageforwhich Ifeelduepraisemustbegiven tothecoranglaisplayer,who didareallyfinejob.
BenjaminBritten's"Soirees Musicales"wasthenextitem, andagaintheorchestraroseto theoccasionwithaveryfine renditionofanamusingand light-heartedpieceofnonsense ingoodmusicaltaste.
Thefinalitem,Rimsky-Korsakov'swell-known"Capriccio Espagnole,"beganbadlywitha lackoflyricalrhythmicbalance inthe"Alborado,"duetothe usualfailing,butpickedupin theVariationsandswepton throughtheothermovementsto areallymagnificentfinalein the"FandangsoftheAsturias."
Speakinggenerally,withthe exceptionsIhavenotedinthe "PersianDance"andtheopeningmovementof"CapriccioEspagnole,"theorchestra'splaying wasexceptionalygood,theprogrammewaswellbalancedand satisfying,andtheconcertI wouldvotethebestwehavehad sofarthisseason.

Whatawonderfulpanorama stretchesoutbeforetheexileas heallowsthefingersoftimeto tracethehorizonofhisvision. Centuryaftercenturyreveals thestruggleoftheIrishracefor freedom,forpeace,forreligious toleration.Buteachsucceedingageseemstodeepenthe mysteryofIreland'sgreatness. Thesecretofhergallanteffort tobeindependentandfreeand ofherultimatetriumphisnot tobefoundincommercialgreatness,extensionofterritory,or militarystrength.Ofnoneof thesethingscanIrelandboast. ButshecanboastofanunswervingallegiancetotheCatholicFaith,andhereinliesthe secretofhertriumph,andthe pledgeof,herfinalglory.Even inherdarkesthourshenever apostasisedfromtheFaith,and asinthecaseoftheCatholicsof theRomanCatacombs,Ireland sprangtostrengthandtriumph fromthebloodofhermartyrs, whosebloodhasbeensprinkled inbenedictionuponadecadent world.
GadinHismysteriouswisdom permittedtheIrishnationtobe flungbleedingtothefourcornersoftheearth.Inapitiful streamtheexilescrossedthe waterwaysoftheworld.Fortifiedwiththestrengthofzillions,theexilesplantedthe CrossofChristinArcticiceand tropicsun,ontherollingprairies andpampasofAmerica,amid thesandsofAfrica,bythe mountainsofAsia,andonthe longlowplainsofAustralia.
ThedispersionoftheIrishis oneofthewondersoftheworld. Wedonotrecallittoarousebitterness-Godforbid.No,we lookbacktoitasoneofthe gloriesofourChurch.The marvellousresultsofthisdispersionformoneofthebrightest pagesinthehistoryofIreland, andoneofthegrandestmonumentstotheundyingvitality andeternalstrengthoftheCatholicChurch.
Theeffectsofthisdispersion onthehistoryoftheworld andthehistoryoftheChurchis beyondcomputation.Theyare world-wideinextentandsuperneuralinpower.Weseea seamofbroken-hearted,poverty-strickenexilesfleeingfrom theircountry,ashelplessfroma worldlystandpointasChrist's firstapostles.Yetlookatthe result,Strongwiththestrength ofGod,theyhavebuiltnumber-
