"Jasper,"ofHarvey,asks:
"DoesyourChurchteachthat aninfantdying!mtorebaptism willbeforeverseparatedfrom itsmother,assumingshegoesto heaven?"
A.:BeforeIdealwiththeproblemunderlyingyourquestion, Ishallanswerthequestion bluntly.Theansweris,No. TheChurchdoesnotteachsuch aneternalseparationofmother andchild.
Nowtotheunderlyingproblem.Whatisthefateofinfantswhodieunbaptised?
Theusualteachinginthe Churchisthatsuchinfantsare eternallyhappy, butwithnaturalhappiness.Thatistosay theirhappinessdoesnotinclude norarisefromthedirectknowledgeofGod,technicallyknown astheBeatificVision.
Attheoutsetitisrighttosay that,evenuptoourowntime, sometheologianshavetaughtorratherconjectured-thatsuch infantsdo,bysomespecialprovidenceofGod,receivesanctifyinggracebeforedeath.As sanctifyinggraceistheonepassporttotheBeatificVision,it wouldfollowthatsuchinfants enjoy,notonlynaturalhappinessbutalsotnesupernatural happinessoftheBeatificVision. However,revelationandtheofficialteachingoftheChurchgive nosupporttosuchconjectures. MostCatholictheologians,indeednearlyall,denytheBeatificVisiontosuchinfants.This commonteachingisbasedon twodoctrines:1.Thedoctrine thatisoffaith,namely,thatto attaintotheBeatificVision,a soulmusthavereceivedthegift ofsanctifyinggrace.2.The doctrinethat-settingasideany questionofmartyrdom-theonly revealedwayinwhichinfants receivesanctifyinggraceis throughtheSacramentofBaptism.
knownothingabouttheBeatific Vision,notevenitsexistence. Hencetheycannotgrievebecausetheydonotpossessit.
"spiritualbody,"asSt.Paulcalls it,seemtoruleoutphysicalseparationofthetypeimagined. Whatthenisthestateofsuch infants?Theyundergothe consequencesoforiginalsinand, accordingtoordinaryteaching, havenottheimmediatevisionof God.But,tofollowthesafe teachingofSt.ThomasAquinas, theyareunitedtoGodnotby grace,butbytheperfectionof theirnaturalknowledgeofGod, andconsequentlyareinastate ofnaturaljoy.Noristheirjoy marredbybodilyillsandanxietiesofmind.Intheirstateof existencethereisnosourcefrom whichsuchillsandanxieties couldarise.But,itisurged, surelytheveryfactthatthey theyhavenottheBeatificVision,isasourceofsorrowto them.St.Thomas,inhisearly writingonthesubject,saidthat therewasnosorrowonthisaccount,becausetheyknowthat theBeatificVisionwassomethingquiteoutsidetheirpowers: accordinglytheywerenomore grievedthanarewewhenwe reflectthatwearenotkings andqueens,orthatwecannotgo flyinglikeabird.But,inlater years,hegaveamoreconsideredreplytothedifficulty,areply basedonafullergraspofthe natureoffaith.Hetaughtthat suchinfants,nothavingreceivedthehabitoffaithinbaptism,
Thereisnothingtobegained bymoreimaginativespeculationsaboutmutualvisitsbetweenmotherandchild.Such ideasarecrudeandtakeusbeyondrevelationandbeyondthe reasonablelimitsofspeculation. Perhapsasimpleillustration mayhelpustorealisewhatwe meanbydifferenceofstateand differenceofhappinessofthe motherandtheunbaptisedinfant.Supposethatamother andaten-year-oldsonbothread "Gulliver'sTravels."Theboy willdelightintheexuberant fancyofSwiftandintheever changingimages.Themother willalsobeabletoappreciate thebittersocialandpolitical satireofthetales.Thechild hasnotthecapacityforsuch appreciation, butdoesnotregret hislimitations, isnotevenaware ofthem.Soanunbaptisedinfantanditsmotherwill, inthe lifetocome, bothfindcomplete happinessintheirknowledgeof God,butthemother, withthe higheranddifferentcapacity givenbygrace, hasahappiness ofwhichthechildisincapable. Butthechildisunawarethat suchhappinessispossibleand thereforedoesnotregretit.
"NoPopery,"inthecourseof anunpleasantletter,asks: "HavenotsomeCatholicsbeen grantedHonoursinrecentdistributions?Whydidoneofthem goabroadatonce?"(Ihave omiittedtomentionthenames whichyougive.)
Thiscommonteachinghasraiseddifficultiesfromanearlytime. St.Augustine,intheyear415, wrotetoSt.Jeromeaskingfor somehelpinhisperplexity. SaintJerome'sreplythrowsno lightonSt.Augustine'stroubles. Thediscussionisstillgoingon; but,asusual,theevolutionof theologyhasclearedupmuchof thedifficultyinvolvedinthe teachingoftheChurch.Idon't supposeIneeddealwiththedifficultythatchildrenareunjustlytreatedinnotreceivingthe BeatificVision.Theyneverhad anyrighttoitatall.Sothere isnoquestionofjusticeand fairness.GraceandtheBeatific VisionarefreegiftsfromGod's bounty.Therealdifficulty seemstoarisefromtryingto applytothefuturelifeideas andimagesdrawnfromtheconditionsofthislife.Guidedby theseideasof"place"and "state,"wepicture,withour limitedimaginations,asortof ironcurtaindrawnbetweenbaptisedparentandunbaptised child.Butthecapacitiesofthe TennisRacquetsRestrungbyexpertsatWimbledonSports Depot,14BonMarcheArcade.

But,youmayask,ifthereis nothingintrinsicallyevilinthe practice,whyforbiditatall? Well,thereareanumberof goodreasonsagainstthismode ofdisposingofthebodiesofthe dead.Thepracticeofcremation wasreintroducedinEurope aftertheFrenchRevolutionbya gangofatheistswiththeideaof usingthispracticeasanexpressionoftheiratheism.Theyintendedbyburningthebodiesof thedeadtogivetestimonyof theirdenialthatthereisanother lifeafterthispresentone.They seemtohavethought,intheir childishway,thatbytheapparentlytotaldestructionofthe body,theywouldbeabletopreventitsresurrection.Suchan ideais,ofcourse,laughable,but thenatheistsarelikethat.At allevents,forthemthisdestructionwouldbeasymbolof theirdisbeliefthatmanwasto riseagain.Inthecircumstancesitwasnaturalthatthe Churchshouldtakestepsto counterthisimpiousattack.
Apartaltogetherfromthis practicalreason, therearemany otherreasonswhyCatholics havealwaysfrownedoncremation.Foronethingthereis theage-longtraditionextending rightbacktothedawnofrecordedhistorythatthefitting modeforthedisposalofthe bodiesofthedeadisearthburial.Thistraditionhasbeen constantintheChristianChurch andbeforethefoundationofthe ChurchintheJewishnation whichwasitsforerunner. That thereshouldhavebeensucha constanttraditionisinitselfa proofthatforthoseatleastwho worshipthetrueGodthereis somethingparticularlyfitting aboutthismodeofburial.Perhapsthisfittingnessisaccountedforbythebeliefheldby JewsaswellasbyChristians thatweshallallriseagainwith thebodieswhichwehadinthis life.Suchabeliefgivesanew significancetothesebodiesof ours, andnaturallydisposesus totreatthemwithrespect, not merelyduringlifebutalsoafter death.
