Mr.Andersenisanexemplary Catholic,andhasbeenamemberoftheHolyNamesociety sinceitsinceptioninthisState. Heisatpresentamemberofthe Leedervillebranch.
Joiningthepoliceforceat19, hespentsomeyearsinthe NorthWest,andwaslatera mountedconstableincountry andmetropolitanareas.After sometimeatthemetropolitan disthictoffice,hejoinedthe liquorinspectionbranchin1923. Hewaspromotedsergeantin 1934,and11yearslaterwasappointedinspectorinchargeof thebranch.In1949hewas madechiefinspector.
Mr.JohnDoyle,whowillretireasCommissionerofPoliceonApril15,willbesucceededin officebyanotherCatholic,inthepersonofChief InspectorThomasHermonAnderson.Mr.Andersonwillbethefirstnative-bornoccupantofthe office.

Somehavesuggestedararedisease,butifthisweretrueit wouldhavetobeonethatonly Catholicsacquire,fornobody butaCatholichaseverbeena stigmatic.Othersupposedexplanationshavebeensuggested,auto-suggestion,catalepsy, somnambulism,self-hypnosis, andmostofalleitherhysteria orhallucination.
Asforhypnosis,anybodywho knowsthissubjectscientifically saysthatperfectmentalntrmateyisthebestconditionfor it,notahystericalcondition. Hypnotismmightbringsomeof theminorappearancesofthe stigmaticecstasy,butitcould notproduceall.Hypnosis(in anyform)couldeffectpurely functionalchangesinthebody, butnothingorganic,exceptperhapsinthemostindirectway.
Hypnosiswouldnotcauseactual wounds,thoughinsomecasesit mightinducebleeding.One Canadiandoctorwhoexamined Mrs.Mclsaactold"Maclean's" thathercaseis"subconscious mentalactionwhichaffectsthe highernervecentrescontrollingtissuenutritionincertainspots."

Butthisdoesnotexplainhow tissuecanbeaffectedinstigmaticcases,whichwouldhave tohappenwherethereareholes throughthehandsandfeetanda deepholeintheside.Hypnosis, nomatterwhatnameisgivento it,ispurelypsychological,not organic,inaction;anditisdecidedlylimited.

Hallucinationisanasinine suggestionasacauseofstigmata.Onedoesnotbringon deepwoundsbydelusion.Webster'sdefineshallucinationsas "perceptionofobjectswithno reality,orexperienceofsensationswithnoexternalcause, usuallyarisingfromdisorderof thenervoussystemasindeliriumtremens."
"Masshypnosis,"whichwould necessarilyapplytoallprmany ofthosewhothoughttheysaw thestigmata,isequallyastonishingforitsfutilityasanexplanation.
Hysteriaseemstomenoexplanationforthestigmata.Medically,itisapsychoneurotic conditioncharacterizedbyemotionalexcitabilityandoftenby agreatvarietyofothersympoms,suchaspartiallossesof memory,functionalparalysis andpains,upsetstomach,and otherillness-altogetherfunctional,notorganic.Thestigmatawhentheyaredeepand lastingaredefinitelyorganic, notmerelyfunctional.Furthermoremysticalecstasies,usually joinedwithextraordinaryinfusedinformation,arealways presentinrealstigmatics.
KnowingonlywhatIhave readabouttheMclsaaccase,I wouldmakenoattempttopass onit.Itannoysme,however,to havesuchthingslightlydismissedbytheignorantorbythose whoapproachallsuchproblems withthe"It-can't-happen-here" attitude.Ontheotherhand,I haveonlythehighestadmirationforrespectfulscepticismon thepart,pfresponsibleChurch authoritiesinanycaseofthe supposedsupernatural;they havearighttodemand,andin authenticcasestheyget,strong signs. Onethingstronglyinfavourof authenticityintheMclsaaccase isthatthedoctorsandpsychia- tristsadmitthewomanisquite normalmentally.Hysterical peoplearenotaltogethernor-mal;theyaresuspicious,undecided,restless,anxious,emotional,over-sensitive.Thewounds ofarealstigmaticarenever infected;thoseofMrs.Mclsaac passthisseveretest.Itwould 111111111111SE1111111111111.1111N1

Nonecouldcureit.Theother woundsappearedoverathreeyearperiod.Thehandand footwoundsgraduallydeepeneduntiltheywentclearthrough. Thewoundswerepainfuland bledeasilywhentouched.Most painfulofallwastheside wound,particularlyafterit deepened.Graduallythepain easedoffduringsixdaysofthe week,butintensifiedonFridays.
By1940,whenthelastofher stigmataappeared,thepainand bleedingswereconfinedtothree hours,6to9p.m.,onFridays, andfrom11p.m.tomidnighton HolyThursday.

Saturday'sconcertintheSomervilleauditoriumwasthethird intheW.A.Symphonyorchestra'sSummerseries,andit markedthefirstappearancethis yearoftheleaderoftheorchestra,VaughanHanly,asconductor.Thesmallattendancemay havebeenduetoalackoffaith inthelocalproduct;ifsothe absenteesshowedbadjudgment, asthelight,butcolourful,programmewasverycapablyhandled,andtheapplausethatdrew Mr.Hanlybacktotherostrum nolessthanthreetimesatthe endoftheperformancewaswell deserved.PerhapsIshould leaventhispraisebyopining thatmostcreditshouldgotothe improvedstandardoftheorchestraitself,whichhasbeen noticeablefromthebeginningof theyear,but,nevertheless,little faultcouldbefoundintheconductor'sdirection,whichwas clear-cutandpolished.Theone thinglackingwasstrength,but thedemandsoftheprogramme onthissidewerelight.
ThesoloistwasWendyTyler, whoplayedSaint-Saens'Cello ConcertoNo.1inAMinor.The accompanimenttothiswastile weakestpointoftheevening's programme,asitfailedtobalancethesoloist'stone,andsome ofthebestconcertedpassages werelost.MissTylerappeared rathernervous,buthandledthe workextremelywell.Herlower registerwasbeautifullywarm, buttheupperactionseemeda triflethin.Ihaveafeelingthat thisismostprobablyduetothe acousticsofopen-airplaying, whichisnotkindtothe'cello.
Theconcertopenedwiththe overtureto"Semiramide,"by Rossini.Themiddlesectionis usuallyplayedalittlefaster,but theconductorforestalledany criticismofstodginessby.a sparklingintroductionanda brilliantfinale.
Prokofieff's"ClassicalSymphonylackedform.Itisreally adelightfullittleworkwhen playedwithunderstanding,but thisperformancegaveanimpressionofformmovements withoutconnection.Therewas
