Therewillundoubtedlybe varyingopinionsonthechoice ofitemsforthesecondconcert intheSummerseriesheldatthe SomervilleauditoriumlastSaturdaynight.Thehighbrows willprobablyfeeltheyarenot gettingthekindoffaretheyexpect,butthe"middle-brows" willbequitesatisfied,and,inmy opinion,itistimethisbody, whichrepresentsatleastthreequartersofthe'musicalpublic, hadalittlebitofconsideration. Eventhe"low-brows"werenot leftlamenting,for,behold! Fibich's"Serenade,"alias "MoonlightMadonna,";tunedup intheguiseofasymphonic idyllfororchestra,entitled"A SummerEvening,"andinits originalsetting,freedfromthd "arrangements"ofKubelikor tin-panalley,itprovedquitean engaginglittlework.However, asinglehearingshouldsuffice. Varietywasaddedtotheprogrammebytheappearanceof theA.B.C.PerthSingers,first withtbeorchestrainBranm's beautifulwork,"SongofDestiny,"and,inthesecondhalf oftheconcert,inarecitalofunaccompaniedmadrigals.These latterweresungwithprecision andlightness,andthebalance ofvoiceswasexcellent.The onlycriticismIwouldofferwas acertainhardnessofqualityin themalesections,whichwas particularlynoticeableinFesta's "DowninaFloweryVale."It alsospoiled"IWeighNotFortune'sFrown,"butthegreater faultherewasalackofcohesion,asthoughtheseparate partsdidnotrealisethesignificanceoftheircontributiontothe whole.Generallyspeaking, however,thechorus'sworkwas reallyexcellent,andMr.Bussis tobecongratulatedontheprogressithasmadesinceitsformationlastyear.
Braham's"SongofDestiny" callsforgreaterresourcesthan theensemblepossesses,anda greatdealofthework'sdramaticpowerandlyricismwaslost inthestraintobeheard.Nevertheless,itwasaninteresting andenjoyableexperiment.
Theeveningopenedwith VaughanWilliams'delightful overturetoAristophanes'comedy"TheWasps."Thelovely flowingthemeinthemiddlesectionsufferedalittlefromsome badstringqualityandthelnale soundedatrifleweakbutthe performancegenerallywasquite good.
Moreinconsistency!The strings,whichIhavejust criticised,gaveamagnificent renditionofTschaikowsky's "SerenadeforStrings,"easily thebestplayingIhaveheard fromthissectionofourorchestra.Largernumberscouldcertainlyhavebeenwishedfor,and thefirstmovementsufferedfrom alackofbass,but,withinthe limitationsofitssize,theorchestragaveareallymemorableperformance.TheimprovementthatMr.Pekarekhas wroughtintheensembleover thepastyearwasreallybrought homebythedeliciousprecision andairinessoftheliltinglittle waltz.
Ofthe, lasttwoitems,Sullivan'soverture,"DiBallo,"and Dohnanyi's"WeddingWaltz," thereislittletobesaidexcept thattheorchestrahandledthem excellently.Infact;theoutstandingimpressionfromthe concertwasthegreaterflexibilityofallthesections, andtheir improvedresponsetotheconductor'sdirections.Thereis nodoubtthatwecanexpectfar betterresultsfromthesmall SymphonyOrchestrathanwe shalleverattainwiththe"augmented"orchestra, whichhasso faronlymeantafrayingofthe edgesofthosesectionstowhich theadditionalplayershavebeen attached.Itisunfortunatethat Perthcannotsupportabodyof musicianswhichwouldbeadequatetoplayanyworkwithout havingtocalloncasualplayers, butperhapsthatdaymayyet come.

Ourmoralattitudetowaris verydifferentfromhers,while weknowthatwehaveeverythingtolosebywar,evenifin theendwewinthefinalvictory. InRussia'scase,thefirst stagesofaworldwarmustbea greatextensionofherpresent

ACatholiccommentatorcan onlyunderlinewithcertainty thefactthatthemassesofthe peasant'Catholicpopulationsin EasternEuropewillneverbecomereconciledintheirhearts toaGodlessmilitarytyranny.
