Withineachofustherearetwo forces,thedownwardpullof theOldAdam,andtheaspiringtospiritualheights.Each daymanfacesacross-roads wherehemustmakeadecision. Shallhesurrendertotheweaknessofhisownnature,orshall hesayandact'no'toitspromptings.
OnewholebookoftheOld Testament,theBookofJob, concernsitselfwiththatinner crisiswithinthesoulofman. Jobdeclaresthatlifeisawarfare.St.Paulalsowritesabout thetwoforceswithinhimpullingagainsteachother.St.Augustineinhis"Confessions" tellsofthelongstruggleofthe clingingclaywhichimpededhis flighttoGod.Thesaintsarethe greatonesofthisworldbecausetheyhavemasteredthemselves.
Everypersonstandsata cross-roads,theoneleadingto Godandtheotherawayfrom Him.Thewillmustchoose.In theinnerlifethereareno plains,weareeithergoingup hillslowlyandsteadily,or comingdownquicklyand easily.

HadWithGod'sHelp.
MonsignorFultonSheenhas writtenaremarkablebook, "PeaceofSoul".Theopening sentencestateshisthesis: "Unlesssoulsaresavednothing issaved;therecanbenoworld peaceunlessthereissoul peace."Nothinghappensinthe externalworldwhichhasnot firsthappenedwithinafoul.A manwhoisnotatpeacewith himselfwillnotbeatpeace withhisbrother.Nodivided personalityishappy.Theconfusedmanisalwayssadand becomeshisownworstenemy.
Peaceofsoulcannotcome frommanhimselfanymore thanmancanlifthimselfbyhis ownears.Helpmustcomefrom withoutanditmustnotbemerelyhumanhelpbutDivine. Modernmanhaslockedhimselfintheprisonofhisown mindandonlyGodcanlethim out,asHeletPeteroutofhis dungeon.
Anxietystemsfundamentally fromirregulateddesires,from thecreaturewantingsomething
thatisunnecessaryforhimor contraryto'isnatureorpositivelyharmfultohissoul.Anxietyincreasesindirectratio andproportionasmandeparts fromGod.Strangeasitmay soundeverypersoniscalledto beasaint,thatis,toaholiness withinhimself.Thealternative tosanctityissin,andsinisa doublecheat,foritnevergives whatitpromises,anditdeprivesusofwhatisdestinedfor ushereafter.

Thepracticalquestionishow canyouandIresolvethecrisis withinusandbringpeaceto oursouls?Theintellectalone cannotanswerthatquestion.
CardinalNewman,whowasan intellectualofthefirstorder, assuresusthatmancannotconverthimself,makehimselfover intoabetterpersonbylogic alone.Inamemorablepassage inhis"IdeaofaUniversity" hewrites:"Quarrythegranite rockwithrazorsormoorthe vesselwithathreadofsilk, thenmayyouhopewiththe delicateinstrumentofthe humanintellecttocurbthose giants,thepassionandthe prideofman."
Lifemusthaveapurpose,an over-masteringaim.Whywas Iborn?ForwhatdoIlive? WhydidGodcreateme?Inthe openingpageofthetextbook onreligion,theCatechism, whichweuseinourschools,is theanswerwhichgivesthetrue philosophyoflife.Theanswer is: "Godcreatedmetoknow,to love,andtoserveHimhereon earththatImayseeandenjoy Himforeverinheaven."

ThecriticismlevelledattheStateGovernmentbyMonsignorMcMahonandtheRev.J.BryantattheSummer School,foritsattitudetowardsthebuildingofchurches,is timelyandwell-taken.Noonewouldhesofoolishasto denythatthehousingsituation(sointimatelyboundup withlarge-scalemigrationschemesanddefence)isamost criticalone,andnoonewouldsuggestthatanyconstruction shouldbepermittedtointerferewithitunlessItwereof equalorgreaterimportance.Thatisthenubofthecontention.Thebuildingofachurch,particularlyinthenew mushroomsuburbs,isclearlyofnolessimportancethanthe shops,hotels,andcinemasthatwillclearlybedemanded. Previousreportsstatedthat BishopByrne,anativeofWashington,D.C.,waslastseenwhen takenfromSeoulshortlybefore theUnitedNations'falloffensivecapturedtheKoreancapital. Itwasthenreportedthatthe Bishopwasinweakhealthbecauseastomachailmentkept himfromeatingthecoarsefood suppliedbytheReds.

Ithinkwhatyouintendto proposeisthatCatholicsshould joinwithmembersof,other denominationsinsomesuch societyastheChristianEndeavoursociety.Suchasuggestion raisesapointwhich Ithink manywell-meaningnon-Catholicsfinditratherdifficultto understand.Theirdifficultyis perhapsincreasedbytherather unsatisfactoryexplanationsofferedthembytheirCatholic friends.Letustrytomakethe Catholicattitudeonthismatter quiteclear.
Therearetwobasicprincipleswhichregulateourassociationswithnon-Catholics.The firstis.ofcourse,Christ'sown commandment:"Thoushalt lovethyneighbourasthyself." Nomatterhowwidelyourfellowmanmaydifferfromusin creedandincult,heisstillour neighbourinthesenseinwhich Christusedthisword.Whether hebeCatholic,Protestant,Jew, Buddist,oratheist,hehasa claimonoursupernaturallove. Thisclaimisbasedonthefact thathissoulismadetothe imageandlikenessofGod,that itisdestinedtoeternallifeand isoroughttobeendowedwith sanctifyinggrace.Invirtueof thisprincipleofCharityweare obligedtointerestourselvesin thespiritualwelfareofthose

BethDean'sfirstappearance wasintwo"straight"balletofferings,thefirst,"Acceleration," tothemusicofStrauss,inwhich shegaveapleasingdisplayof balanceandrhythm,andthe secondaninterpretativedance entitled"TheStoryofThreeSisters,"withmusicbytheFranch composer,Poulenc,whichgave MissDeanopportunitytolemonstrateherpowersofcomic mime.Itwasaverypopular item.
Consideringthelimitation.,of theuprightpiano,EricMitchell's renderingofBrahms'Balladein DMinor,Op,10,No.1,andthe No.2RhapsodyinGMinor,was extremelyfine.Thesameartistreappearedinthesecond halfoftheprogrammewithtwo piecesintheSpanishidiomby ErnestoLecuona-"Cardoba" and"Malaguana"-both of whichwereverycompetently handled.
VictorCarell'ssecondbracket includedtheSerenadefrom "DonGiovanni"and"Itis Enough,"fromtheoratorio "Elijah."Apartfromthetaste oftheirjuxtapositionneither numberwassatisfactorilyhandled.TheSerenadewasmade jerkybyexcessivebreathing, andthe"Elijah"numberwas notinthesinger'smetier.As
anencoreweheardasettingof PadraicColum'spoem"0Men fromtheFields,"whichdidnot appealaswellasthebetter knownonebyHerbertHughes.
Mr.Carellhasabadhabitof breakingjoinednoteswithan aspirate,andthiswasverynoticeableinBrahams."Wiegenlied,"oneoftheconcluding bracket,whichalsofeaturedthat oldwar-horse.Huhn's"Invictus."Byfarthebestoffering fromthissingerwasthegroup ofaboriginalsongsarrangedby LethbridgeandHill.Mr.Carell sangthesewithexpressionand finerhythmicsense.
Thestarturnoftheevening wasBethDean,however,andit istimethiscritiquereturnedto her.Beforeintervalwehada Negrospiritualdanceanda Mexicanpeasantdance,both quiteentertaining,butnotinspired,andimmediatelyafterintervaltworatherinteresting formalitems,anexpressive dancetotheaccompanimentof therecitationofapoemby KahalGibran,andastylised PrayerDanceoftheAztecsof Mexico.Thelatterwasextremelypicturesque.
Thefinalbracketofdances wereallofaboriginalorigin,includingtwoencores.Miss Dean'smake-upandcostuming forthesedanceswasinteresting, andgavealltheappearanceof authenticity.Thedancesthemselves,exceptingtheencores wereallofthestory-telling variety,anditwasnotdifficult tofollowthemovementsfrom thenotessupplied.Altogether thedancingwaswellworthgoingtosee. -RONSARD.

HighlightoftheA.B.C.'scelebrationsmarkingthefiftieth anniversaryofthedeathof Verdi,whichfallsthisyear,is tobeabroadcastofthecomposer'sRequiemMass.

BeniaminoGigli,MariaCaniglia,EzioPinza,andEbeStignaniwiththeRomeOpera chorusandorchestraconducted byTullioSerafinwillbeheard inthisbroadcast.
WhenRossinidiedin1868, Verdiputforwardthesuggestionthatallthebestknown Italiancomposersoftheday, himselfincluded,shouldcollaborateinwritingaItequiem MassasatributetoanoutstandingItalianpersonality.
Eachcomposerwastofurnish onesectionoftheMass,sothat thecompleteworkshouldbe entirelynationalinspirit.To Verdi'sintensedisappointment, theprojectfellthrough.Five yearslaterthedeathoccurred ofAlessandroManzoni,agreat Italianpoetandnovelist,and
oneoftheleadingintellectual figuresofhistime. Verdiwasdeeplyaffectedbecause,bothasartistandman, hegreatlyesteemedManzoni, andthistimehedeterminedto paytributetothememoryof hisfriendwithaRequiemMass, assumingundividedresponsibility. Thecomposerpossessedthe "LiberaMe,"whichhehad writtenfortheearlierRossini Mass,andalsoroughsketches ofthe"Requiem"and"Dies Irae"sectionsofthesameMass. Theseservedasthebasisofthe presentcompositionwhichwas completedintimeforthefirst anniversaryofManzoni'sdeath, andreceiveditsinitialperformanceonMay22,1874,inthe ChurchofSt.MarkinMilan underthecomposer'sowndirection.
Theworksufferedowing chieflytothefactthatitis undoubtedlyoperaticinstyle, andtheatricalinapproach.But thepassionatesincerityandthe sheerbeautyofthemusic,soon wonfortheRequiemitspresent highplaceasoneofthegreatest worksofthekindeverwritten.
