ArchbishopJamesDuhig,ofBrisbane,walked withtheKingamongthegroupofpilgrims,which includedeightBishopsand26priests.
TheKingandPrincessaskedmanyquestions, showingrealinterestandrecallingPrincessMargaret'sownvisitlastyeartoRomeandtotheHoly Father.
ThepilgrimswereinvitedtotheCastlebyits Governor,LordGowrie,formerGovernorofVictoria.

ARoyalwelcomeforAustralianpilgrimsatWindsorCastle wasthecrowningfunctionofthe AustralianNationalPilgrimage, whichthisweekcomestoan end.Thismorning,July24, HisMajesty,KingGeorgeVI, andHerRoyalHighness,PrincessMargaret,paidtheAustralianvisitorsthesignalhonourof receiving thebeautiful EastTerrace,lookingoutover theprivateWaneParkofthe historiccastleandofchatting withtheminformallyfora considerabletime.
Shortlyafter9a.m.,thepilgrims,attheinvitationofJeord Gowrie,Governorofthecastle, whowithLadyCowrieduring histermofofficeasGovernor ofVictoriaendearedhimself particularlytotheCatholicsby hisinterestintheirinstitutions andactivities,setoutonavisit toWindsor.The20-milejourney,inthepilgrims'familiar fleetofbuses,laythrougha pleasingEnglishcountryside. Towardstheendthewaywas throughEton,theseatofthe famousscholasticfoundationof KingHenryVI,establishedfor 70"King'sScholars,"anddedicatedtoOurLady,underthe titleofherAssumptioninto Heaven.Theofficialtitleof EtonCollegeis,evento-day,
"TheKing'sCollegeofOurLady ofEtonbesideWindsor,"andin theSchoolYard,pilgrimssaw therepresentationofOurLady, defacedsomewhatbytime,but latelyrestoredandbrightened.
Inthemarvellouschapel,too, asuperbspecimenofperpendi- culararchitecture,aninteresting featurewasthesightoftherecentlyrevealedandextraordinarilybeautifulmuralsdepicting scenesinOurLady'slife.These murals,paintedin1479,were,as happenedsooftenafterthe "Reformation," white-washed overbythePuritans,andwere onlydiscoveredbyworkmenin 1847.Anarrow-mindedProvostorderedthemtobecovered upbywoodenpannelling,lest Etonscholarsbedisturbedby thesePopishdisplays,butin 1923themuralswereuncovered again.Thustheyremain,and thuswereseenbytheAustralianpilgrims,thoughonlythe lowerseriesofpictureshave survivedthebigotedattemptsat obliterationbythevandalsof pastcenturies.
Thecharminglittlevillageof Eton,withitsantiquestreets, shops,housesandcollegiate buildings,and,ofcourse,the celebratedplaying-fields,and thecomingandgoingofEtonians,intheirquaintlycharacteristicattire,werealsofascinatingtovisitorsfromtheother sideoftheworld,

BishopGriffithssaidthatthe medicalofficermanagedtoescape,buthadwitnessedthe cold-bloodedkillingofthechap-lainandallthegroupofwounded.
FatherFelhoelterhastwosisterswhoarenuns.
FromEtonisonlyavery shortruntothevillageofWindsor,nestlingclosetothebaseof thehillonwhichthecastleis built.Bythepicturesque Thames,acentrehereforpopu-larboatingexcursions,thepilgrimshadlunch,andafterwards walkedthroughthetownupa winding,steepshoppingstreet, totheirassemblypoint,neara bronzestatueofQueenVictoria. TheprecinctsoftheCastleare opentovisitors,whoabound withtheirguide-books,butthe Australians,closeon700strong, wereusheredinbyaspecial gateway,pastthered-coated grenadierinhisbear-skin,and theubiquitousbutkindlyEng- lish"bobby,'alongtotheUpper Ward,bythePrivateRoyal Apartments.OntheEastTerrace,intheshadowofthemassivestonewallsofthewardand thenearbyRoundTower,amag- nificentviewisseenofthe sunkengarden,withitshandsomestatuary,well-keptlawns, andbubblingfountain,and,beyond,thegreenexpanseofthe HomeParkandthesurroundingcountry.Englandfavouredthevisitors,afteranuncertainmorning,withaglorious dayofsunshineandacooling breeze.
Onthestoneterrace,theAustraliansspreadthemselvesalong itsextent,onthesmallerupperterrace,reachedbycomehalfdozensteps,hisGracetheArchbishopofBrisbane,MostRev. Dr.Duhig,leaderofthePilgr- image,withRev.A.R.E. Thomas,organizer,andRev.E. Perkins,assistantorganizer,and thepilgrimagestaff,weregreetedbyLordGowrie,andbyHis Majesty'sprivatesecretary,ViscountLascelles.TwoAustralian Bishops,BishopRoperand BishopDoodywerepresentin theparty,withrepresentativesofAustraliaHouseLondon.
Suddenly,then,butquietly andalmostunobtrusively,His MajeslyandHerRoyalHighness cameontotheterrace.Around ofwarmapplausewentupfrom thepilgrims.TheKingand PrincesMargaretreceivedgraciouslyArchbishopDuhig,the organizersandthepilgrimage staff,whowerepresentedby LordGowrie.
ArchbishopDuhigexpressed totheKingtheloyaltyofthe AustralianCatholics,representedbythegreatbodyofpilgrims, andhopedthat isMajesty'shealthwouldimpfovesothat hewouldbeabletovisitAus-
traliainthenearfuture,when, hisGraceassuredhim,hewould receiveaverywarmwelcome fromtheAustralianpeople.Dr. DuhigmentionedthattheAustralianflagwhichthepilgrimscarried,andwhichhadtravelled withthemthroughouttheirpilgrimage,hadbeenmadeby AustralianCatholicBoyScouts. First,theuseoftheA-Bomb, oranyweaponofdestruction,is aviolationofGod'slaw"ifit isintendeddirectlytokillorto injurenon-combatants,"Father Connellsaid.Inmodernwarfare, hesaid,theterm"combatant" includesmorethanmembersof thearmedforces,citingmen engagedinmakingwarplanes asanexample.
"Ontheotherhand,"Father Connellstated,"itisutterly unreasonabletoclaimthatall thecitizensofawarringnation arecombatants.Doctors,nurses, schoolteachers,clergyfnen,grocers,butchers,littlechildrenand elderlypersons,etc.,whoform alargeproportionofthepopulationofeverymoderncity,are surelynottoberan)Icedascombatants,eventhoughtheymayat timescontributeremotelyand indirectlytothewareffort.

Inthecourseoflastweek,Dr.Hislopstated intheLegislativeCouncilthathewasappalledby thepublicattitudetothegrowinguseofalcohol. Itwasahabitwhichcausedgreatunhappinessin homes,destroyedmarriages,wasthecauseof manyroadaccidents,andcausedphysicaland mentaldeterioration.Thatassuredlyisaformidableindictmentandachallengetothegood senseofallcitizens.Itisasubject,however,which lendsitselfalltooreadilytoextremismoftwovarieties.Thereisinthecommunityasectionofrabid teetotallerswhoseethenationplungingheadlong toperditionbecausetheworkingmonhasacouple ofbeersaftertheday'stoil.Thesepeopleadvocatenottemperance,butprohibition,andtheyare theonesectionofthecommunitywhichshould havenovoiceinquestionsofliquqrreform;firstly, becausetheylackexperience,andmoreimportantly,becausetheyarenotquiterationalonthesubject.
Theotherextremistsarethosehabitualdrinkerswhosimplyrefusetorecognisethatanyproblemrevolvesabouttheliquortrade.Ifacount ofheadsweremadeamongmoderatedrinkers,it couldnotbegainsaidthatthereisconsiderable abuseconnectedwithalcohol.Whetherithas reachedtheproportionsofanationalevilisnotso easytodecide,butinanycaseitwouldbefoolhardltoallowsuchaconditiontodevelopwithout takingsomeremedialaction.WhilenotagreeingwitheverythingsuggestedbyDr.Hislop,there wouldappeartobeagooddealoftruthinhisparadoxicalcontentionthatthewaytodiminishexcessivedrinkingistowidenitsuseandaccessibility. Europeansregardtheuseofwine'primarilyason adjuncttofood,anditistakenquitepubliclyand withoutapology,whichisasitshouldbe.Yetour astoundingliquorlawsmakeitimpossibletohave abottleofwine
Itisthis wrongattitudeofmindwhichcontributesmoreto drunkennessthananyotherfactor.
Theproposaltoreducethealcoholiccontent ofdrinksistiedupwithtechnicalconsiderations aboutpreservation,andwhetheritcouldbepracticallyeffectedisaquestionfortheexperts.Even shoulditprovepossible,itisanybody'sguess whetheritwouldachieveitsaim. Byreasonof makingalcoholicdrinkslessstimulatingandthe costofstimulationmuchgreater,thereisadistinctdangerthatconsiderablenumbersmightturn toinferiorwinesandsuchsubstitutesasmethylatedspirits. Inthatcasethelaststateoftheproblemwouldbeworsethanthefirst,andwemight ruetheenactmentoflegislationwhichintroduced theevilsoftheprohibitioneraintheUnitedStates. Onesuggestionthatmeritsconsiderationisthat adequateseatingaccommodationshouldbeprovidedinallhotels.Itseemsafactthatlessliquor isconsumedwhenseatedthanwhenstanding,and thereisapsychologicalelementofcontrolinrelaxation.Apartfromthattheconductofthe hoteltradeisdueforthoroughgoingreform,for thereisnobusinesswhichsoreekswithcallous commercialism.
ONTERMINOLOGY
ThefunctionoftheCatholicChurchcouldbedivided intotwoparts.Firstthe Churchaimstoconserve anddeepenthefaithand charityofhermembers. Secondly,infidelitytothe commandofChrist.the Churchaimstoextend toothersthetruthand thedivinelifeChristofferedtomen.Now,there centuriesofdividedChristianityhaveleftamongstthose whomtheChurchhastoapproachadividedmindanda hopelesslyconfusedterminology."Thereisnoevidence thatpeoplearemorereligious,"wroteMonsignorKnox afewyearsago;"Thereis
evidencethatpedpleare fonderoftalkingaboutreligion,andoftalkingaboutit inpublic."Alotofthetalkingisshockinglyloose.
Theresultisthatone,arguingfromtheCatholicposition.oftenfindsitdifficultto understandortobeunderstood.Andyet,Christ's messagehasaclearurgency asawhole,andthosewho canseethedifficultyshould devotesomethoughtto bridgingthisgap.Itisreal enoughtomakeeffectivecontactunlikely.Wordswhich haveaclearmeaningtoCatholicshaveavaguelyora vastlydifferentmeaningto others.
shouldgrowaconvictionthat relationshipwithChrist throughtheChurchistheone thingthatcansatisfymen andhealtheirwounds.From thatshouldflowadeterminationtobridgethegapcaused byaprogressivemovement awayfromChrist.
Grace,Understanding,Example.
Threethingscanhelpto buildthebridge-gracethat canbewonbyprayer,asympatheticattempttounderstandthemindofthose whomwecannotbutwishto influence,andadeliberateattempttointerpretinour livesandinourwordsthe truthofChrist.Beyond measure,thefirstisthemost important.Butthesecond andthirdfactorsareof value.Inourapproachto others,weshouldbeclear thatwearenotseekingto dominate,toimposeouropinions. Ratherweareendeavouringtoshareourrichestpossessions.Ourgaze shouldbefixedonpersons, firstonthePersonofChrist, ofWhomtheChurchisthe extensityinspaceandtime. ThenAirloveandinterest turnstowardsthosewho needChristsoobviously.Towardsthem,wesimplycannothaveatakeitorleaveit attitude.Ourinterestinthe spreadofCatholicismmust springfromaloveofpersons, notfromattachmenttoapersonalideal.
IncarnatedDoctrine
Itisfundamentallytruethattherealreform regardingalcoholmusttakeplaceinthementalityofmenwhodrinktoexcess.Andthereis amplescopealsoforeducatingthemanwhodeliberatelysuppliestoomuchinanatmosphereconducivetoalackofrestraint.Thereisnoindustry inwhichsolittlevalueandservicearereceivedfor suchlargeprofitsasinthehotelsofourcommunity.Thefactthatthepublic,througharational controlofhotelsandotherdistributingagencies, wasexercisingexternalrestraintwouldsurelypay dividendsinself-control.Theextensionofbeer gardens,especiallywithalltheadvantagesofour climate,wheremealsmightbehad,andmusic,and towhichthewholefamilymightresortwithout harmorscandal,wouldreducetheconsumptionof alcohol,notonlyinphysicalquantity,butinrelativeimportancetotheotherfactorswhich,make upcivilisedliving.Itmightintimeconvert drinkingintooneofthesocialgracesandremove theorgy-likeaspectitassumesto-daybothinpub: licandinprivate.

Catholicauthoritiesaregivinglicdelegationhadreportedoralthemattermuchstudy.Regu-lytoacommission,headedby lartelevisedreligiouspro-LordBeveridge.Thecommisgammesareexpectedtobeorganisedby1951,andCatholics willbeofferedtimebytheBritishBroadcastingCorporation, government-controlledradio monopoly.
Onepracticalconsiderationis theproblemofsoarranging servicesthattheywilllend themselvesreadilytovisual broadcast.Churchleadersalso realisethattelevisionneeds carefulhandling,inthatitcaters tothemoderninclinationto watcheverythingfromone's ownarmchair.

Todiminishthepilgrims'few days'opportunityofseeing Paris,Friday,thefestiveholiday,waswetandthreatening, sothatfew,Iimagine,ventured forth,atleastinthemorning.
Thesecondtraingroup,includinghisGrace,Archbishop Duhig,leaderofthepilgrimage, arrivedatParisearlyonSaturday,July15.
SALAZAR
ThetripfromLisbonwasthe longeststretchoftheAustralian pilgrims'progress,excepting,of course,thejourneyacrossthe sea.Regretfully.weleftthe beautifulPortuguesecapitalat 1p.m.onTuesday,July11,and settleddownontheSpanish train(maybe,theonethathad broughtustoLisbon)forthe longruntoHendaye,overthe Frenchborder.Onthefirst speedypartofourjourney throughPortugalwewere drawnbyahandsome,powerful dieselengine,butthiswasreplaced,perhapshalfway,bya steamlocomotiveunmistakeably truetonamewhichpoured forthconscientiouslyinordinate quantitiesofsoot.Butthis unpopularbe-smircherofthe pilgrimsgaveplaceinturnto anelectricenginesometime beforearrivalattheSpanish bordertownofIrun.
PLEASANT,FERTILE
ThePortuguesebordertown, VilarFormoso,wasreachedbetween8and9p.m.,andthefirst partoftherunthroughSpain, throughcountrythatwesaw previouslybydaylight,was madebynight.Butthistimewe sawBurgosinthemorning,just on7.Thespiresofthefamous cathedral,oneoftheshowpiecesofEurope,passedbyon ourleft,butfromBurgosto Irunwewerepermittedquite anotheraspectofSpainfrom themorearidcountrywehad seenonthewaytoPortugal. TheapproachtoFrancewas
throughpleasantlyfertile,welltilledfields,backed,attimes,by typicaljaggedSpanishmountains,withnumerouspicturesque viewsofancientmonasteries andchurchesanuattractivevillagesandtowns.Therewere, too,manyexamplesofrecent building,orre-building.Into thebargain,thedaywascool. Irunwasreachedat1,20 p.m.,Wednesday,July12.A delayhere,whilepassportswere stamped-alongprocedurefor over300pilgrims.Itwas3.2 beforewepassedoverthe bridgetoHendayeandchanged intotheFrenchtrainthatwas sotakeustoParis.Hedayewas leftbehindat3.40,andafter passingBayonne,therunwas throughmilesandmilesof forest,theplaceapparently throughwhichthedisastrous firesweptnotsolongago.After Bordeaux,intheevening,an old-time,atmosphericrailway station,glass-coveredinthe mannermadefamiliarbypictures,therestofthejourney wasveiledbynight,thoughit wasstilllight,thankstotwilight anddaylightsaving,whenwe passedthroughAngouleme, significanttoAustralianasthe townwhichonlyrecentlygave tothedioceseofWilcanniaForbesawholecommunityof Carmelitenuns.

TotheBasilicatheAustralian pilgrimswentimmediatelyafter arrivalforMass,celebratedin thecryptbyFatherE.Perkins. assistantdirectorofthepilgrimage.Theoccasionalsermonwas preachedbyFatherStormon, S.J.,whoisstudyingatOxford, butwasinParisduringtheUniversityvacation.Thecryptis theonlypartreallyfinished.It isbreath-takinginitsbeauty, thoughitsstyleofdesignis prettyratherthanmassiveor grand.Butitisprettiness chastelyconceivedandbrought toperfection.Themarbleand mosaicworkinfusesthecrypt withapervadingblue,different againfromtheblue,inhonour ofOurLady,achievedatthe QueenoftheWorldChurch, PortSaid.But,mixedwiththe blueareallthecoloursofthe rainbow.Rather,asinthe mosaicbehindthehighaltar, depictinganglsholdingupbasketsofrosesbehindthepleasingwhitemarblestatueofthe LittleFlower,thecoloursare thecoloursofapeacock'stail. Buttheyareblendedtastefully, andthewholeeffectthroughout thecryptisindescribablylovely.ItisallinthespiritoflittleSaintTherese,whomustapprovejoyfully.
TheBasilicaitselfisstillbeing built.Itisbeingdoneslowly andwell.Accordingtoanotice,theconsecrationisdueto
takeplaceonAscensionDay, 1951,butanothernotice,ina littleroominthegroundsofthe Carmel,asksforurgentprayers thattheconsecrationmaytake placeinthisHolyYear,1950. Againstthegleamingdomeof theBasilicastandsoutinstark contrasttheblackoutlineofa hugecraneandworkmenare busyinandaboutthebuilding.

AvisittotheCarmelfollowed thevisittotheBasilica,tothe ShrineoftheLittleFlower, whichissohallowedbyherlife anddeaththereasthesaint whomthewholeworldloves.It isadearandvenerablechurch thatthepilgrimssaw,dedicated nowalmostentirelytohermemoryandtothesimpleloveof GodwhichshetaughtHer shrineandherrelicswereveneratedandthere,intheafternoon,Benedictionwasgiven,the Australianpilgrimsfillingthe churchtooverflowing. OnedayintheschoolatLeyden,hewasdelightingthe youngfolkaroundhimby paintinglittlepigsandchickens onthewoodenshoesofhiscousin,Wilhelmina.Everybodywas sointentofwatchingtheyoung artistthattheapproachof MynheerSpeelburg,theschoolmasfer,wasunheard.Asyou canreadilyimagine,themaster wasveryangrywiththechildrenforwastingtheirtime,and hescoldedRembrandtseverely fordisfiguringhiscousin'sproperty.

JudgeGavanDuffy,inmakinghisrulingstatedthatan ordersoughtfromthecourtto securefulfillmentofagreementsconcerningthereligionof childrenofamixedmarriagecouldnotbewithheldunderthe Constitutiononanygroundof publicpolicy.Thecourtthen grantedherapplicationforan absoluteorderwhichdirected herestrangedhusbandtoreturn herthreeyoungboys,whohave beenshelteredin"Mrs.Smyly's Homes"(Protestanthomesfor children).
Thecoupleinvolvedwere marriedinaCatholicChurch in'Dublinin1941.Thehusband, amemberoftheChurchof Ireland,agreedtothestipulat- ionrequiredinallmixedmarriages,thatallchildrenbornof thatunionwouldbebroughtup intheCatholicFaith.Earlythis year,however,heclaimedthe undertakingsignedbyhimwas notbinding,statedthathewas amemberoftheChurchof Ireland(Protestant)andthat hewishedhischildrentobe broughtupinhisfaith. He orderappealedagainstthecourt toreturnthechildrento themotherandthechildrenwill remainwithhimpendingthe resultoftheappeal.
