Onarrival,theRt.Rev.MonsignorMcMahon,whorepres-entedtheArchbishopofPerth, Dr.Prendiville,waswelcomed bythehon.secretary,Mrs. Crockerandothermembersof theballcommitteewithRev. FatherGallagher,parishpriest ofBoulder.Othermembersof theofficialpartywereMr.J.D. Teahan,MayorofBoulder,and Mrs.Teahan,Rev.FathersMcCarthy,McGrath,KellyandDevinney,Mrs.R.B.Wilsonand Mrs.M. Thelatteryearsofherlife werespentatDongarra,wheresheendearedherselftoalarge circleoffriendsoftheOrder, EveryvisitortothePriory, priestorlayperson,experienc- edherkindlyinterest.Forher unfailingkindnessandcharity toallshewilllongberemembered.

Herlifewasspentforothers-itwasrepletewithkindly acts.Highlytalented,shenever spokeofherselforherachievements.Herhumilityandmodestyconcealedfromtheeyesof peoplethenobilityofhersoul andtheintegrityofhercharacter.

OnlastSundayafternoon,therewasverylittleroomfor August6,HisGracetheArchbishop,accompaniedbyDean RaffertyandRev.FatherHogan, cameonhiscanonicalvisitation, whichincludedtheadministrationoftheSacramentofConfirmation:

DuringtheceremonyofConfirmationHisGracewasassisted byRev.FatherMullins,andthe recipientswere109childrenand fouradults,andthesehadwith themtheirsponsors,sothat

spectators. Thechildrenlookedapicture, welldressed,andconducting themselvesadmirably. His Gracewasdelightedwiththe smoothandorderlymannerin whichtheceremonywasconductedandcongratulatedthe choirontheirperformance, Thehighaltarandbothside altarsweretastefullydecorated, andthanksareduetotheSistersresponsible.

LIVERPOOL,July21(NC.)ArchbishopRichardDowneyof LiverpoolhopestovisitCanada thisyeartoreceiveanhonorary degreeofdoctoroflawsoffered byTorontoUniversity. Thehonourforthe69-yearoldprelate,whoholdsdoctorates ofdivinity,philosophyandof law,is servicesbeingofferedforhis totheBritishCommonwealthwareffortthrough theInformationMinistryandthe BritishBroadcastingCorporation inLondon.

Afterschoolhoursthiszealous Religiousvisitedthehospital,theprison,thesickandthepoor; andthecomfortandspiritual helpwhichresultedfromher visits,onlyGodknows,She hadapowerandmagnetism overpeoplethatfewotherspossess,anditwashermarvellous understandingofhumannature thatwasthesecretofhersuccess.Hergentle,refinedcharacterattractedandgreatlyinfluencedothers.LikeherHoly Foundress,MotherVeronica foundherjoyinhelpingthesick andthesuffering.

In1915 Superiorshewasappointed oftheNorthamCommunity,wheresheremained until1920.Thencameher transfertoAlbanyuntil1925, whenshereturnedtoFremantle andheldtheofficeofSuperior forthenextsevenyears.Obe-dienceonceagaincalledherto Albany,anditwasinthis "beautyspot"oftheWestthat thedeceasedpassedthelast eighteenyearsoflife.

Until1947,MotherVeronica wasveryactiveandinterested inalltheeventsoftheday.But forthepastthreeyearssheenfloured,withedifyingpatienceandresignation,theheavycross oflossofsight,OnthemorningofJuly26th.,MotherVeronica,fortifiedbytheritesof HolyChurch,andwhileherSistersprayedbyherbed-side, peacefullyclosedhereyesonthe thingsoftimeandyieldedher soultoitsCreator.Toherwe mayapplySt.Paul'swords:"To dieisgain."

Acertainamount.butless, philanthropyextendstothe aged,andifnothingelsebut privateandpubliccharity offers,Isupposehalf-a-loaf isbetterthannobread.But Icannotbutfeelthatthe problemofadvancingage mustbeviewedassomething morethananationalproblemtohepalliatedatthe expenseofthenationalpuirse. Itisnomoreahumansolutionoftheproblemthanthe careoforphanagesisthe answertothedilemmaofthe unwantedchild.Noinstitutioncansupplythepersonallove,thesenseofsecurityandfeelingof"being wanted"thathomelifedoes Similarly,whileeconomic provisionslikepensions,decenthousing,andlaboursavingdevicesundoubtedly domuchtorelievethefears oftheold,merematerial measuresdonotmeetthe problemradically.Forina certainveryrealsense,growingoldissimilartobecomingachildoncemore.The needsoftheaged,inaspiritualandpsychologicalsense, areverysimple.Theyare identicalwiththoseofchildhood-affection,security,the senseof"beingwanted."

Thefamily"mustrepresent acontinuousfactor,itmust reckonitsagenotforyears butforgenerations."This idealofindependenceand permanenceisscarcelycomprehendedinthiscountry. Yetitisthetraditionalconceptandfactthroughout Europe.Trulythehistoric predominanceofagriculture hasfavouredsuchadevelopment,becauseland-ownership isatoncetheeconomicstay andtheexpressionofthe continuingpersonalityofthe family.Yet,becausewe liveinanindustrialage, thereisnoreasonwhythe mostsustainedeffortsshould nothemadetore-establish thefamilyontraditional lines.Thefamily,despite Stateenterpriseandprivate monopoly,maystillflourish ifitcanhelinkedwithan economicorderofworking proprietorship.Insucha system,theagedhaveamost importantparttoplay.They arethecustodiansoftheinheritedskillsofdomesticindustry,theinterpretersofits traditions.Theyrepresent theaccumulatedwisdomof thegenerationsandareable andwillingtoimpartitto theirsonsandgrandsons. OnTuesday,wecelebratetheFeastoftheAssumption oftheBlessedVirgin.TheAssumptiontakesintwomysteriesinOurLady'slife-herbodilyresurrection,andher ascensionintoheaven,whereshewasinstalledbyherSon asheaven'sQueen.Thisfeastcommemoratesthecrowning privilegeofalifeofprivileges.Itcommemoratesalsothe rewardofalifespent,asnootherlifehasbeenspent,inthe serviceofGod.

ThereisnorecordofOurLady'slastyears,ofher death,ofherassumptionintheScriptures,norhasthefact factofherAssumptionbeendefinedbytheChurch.The truthhasbeenpasseddowninaconstanttradition,andit maybeinferredfromtheabsenceofanylocalclaimtothe possessionofhertombandherrelics.TheDivineMaternityofOurLadywasatthecentreofallthefavoursconferreduponher.Tofitherforthisoffice,fromthebeginningofherlife,fromherconception,aplenitudeofgrace wasconferreduponher.Attheendofherlife,herunbrokeninnerpuritywasmirroredinthepreservationofher fleshfromthecommonhumanend.Itismostfittingthat thebodyofChrist'sMother,whenceHederivedHis'Sacred Humanity,shouldnothaveseenthecorruptionofthegrave.

ThereisatraditionthatOurLadylivedafewyears inSt.John'scareafterherSon'sdeaththathereagerness tohewithHimingloryovercameherpowertolive,and withoutillness,shediedfromthevehemenceofherlove. Herdeath,moreaptlythanforanyotherhumanbeings,has beencalledtheDormition,thefallingasleep.Forfrom thatsleepshewasrousedbythelovingkindnessofher Son.WithHim,shereigns,addinghervoicetotheconstantintercessionofherSon,representingthemostperfect formofmerehumannature.Itisthiselevationtoaplace ofhighhonourthatthisfeastcelebrates.

Ontheoccasionofthisfeast,wemightmaketworequests,oneforourselves,onefortheworld.Forourselves,wemightaskOurLady,whosetaskitwas,withthe HolySpirit,toformChrist,andtosurroundwithherlove Hislifeandwork,toformusintothelikenessofChrist,and toguidelovinglyourlifeandwork.

Fortheworldasawhole,wemightaskthatshewould helpourgenerationtoreceiveChrist'sredemption,inwhich shewassocloselyassociated.Itisclearhowurgentlythe worldneedsChrist'struthasthestartingpointforitsefforts evenatmaterialwell-being.Itisclearhowmuchitneeds Christ'scharity.Itisunfortunatelyclearhowmuchit needs(andwillneed)Christ'sanswertosuffering.- This truth,thischarity,thisunderstandingofsufferingwere knownbyMary.Throughherhands,ourintercessiongoes mostpowerfullyaidedby.Christ.Andinproportionas ourneedisgreat,ourprayersfortheseendsmaybeearnest.

Wemightstressforamomentthisquestionofsuffering.Itseemsinescapablethattheworldhasbeforeita periodofextremedifficudty.Weoftenreadstatisticsof worldfoodshortages,andseethequestionasamathematicalproblemratherthantranslatingthematterinto humanterms.Hunger,lackofshelter,theimpossibility formillionsofrealisingafullyhumanlifeseemsunavoidable.Theproblemispartlyoneofdistributionofexisting wealth,butnotwhollyso;becausetheproductivecapacities oftheworldhavebeenwastedanddestroyed.Thisphysi- calsufferingentailsmentalsuffering,andevenwhenthe physicalconditionsoflifearenotpressing,mentalsufferingisfarfrombeingeliminated.Thetragedyisthat millionsofpeoplehavenoframeworktocopewiththe strainsandtensionsoflife,noschemeofthingsthatcan givemeaningandreasonablenesstothethingstheysuffer.

WhenwethinkofOurLadyintriumph,wemightalso thinkoftheagonywhichprecededthattriumph.HerpresenseinlightandglorywithherSonwasprecededbyher hoursindarkness,physicalandmental,atthefootofthe Cross.Theagonyoftheworldonlyhasmeaninginsofar asitisunitedtothesufferingsofChrist.Itcanonlyhave consciousmeaning,fortheindividual,ifthatactofunionis consciouslymade.OurLady,morethananyotherhuman being,achievedthatwillingunitingatthefootofCalvary.Thatispre-eminentlyherlessontothisgeneration, anditisalessonwemaytrytolearnaswecelebratethe dignitytowhichshehasbeenelevatedinherlifeofcompleteunionwithherSon.

IMPORTANTEDUCATIONMOVE

Animportantgaininthe campaigntosecurejustice forCatholicschoolsinAustraliawasscoredwhenthe NewSouthWaleshranchof theAustralianLabourParty, thebiggestandmostinfluentialpoliticalorganisationin theCommonwealth,endorsed theprincipleofStateaidfor denominationalschools.Bya voteof165to154theannual conferenceoftheparty agreedthatin'futureall moneyallocatedbytheCommonwealthGovernmentto theStateforeducationalpurposesshouldbesharedona percapitabasisbybothgovernmentandnon-government schools.

Adualsystemofeducation operatesinN.S.W.to-day. Free,secularandcompulsory educationisprovidedbythe Stateforapproximately three-quartersofthechildrenofschoolage.Intheory,theStateissupposedto offerfreeeducationforall children,hut,infact,100,000 childrenofCatholicparents arebeingeducatedinmore than600schoolsby4,000 teachers,withoutanycostto theState.Statisticsreveal thatitnowcosts£45ahead toeducateachildforone yearinaStateschool.The annualsavingtotheState fromCatholicschoolsis thereforeabout£4,500,000.

CatholicGrievance.

TheStateschoolsystemin N.S.W.wascreatedbythe EducationActof1880.Up tothattimeCatholicschools hadreceivedsomemeasure ofStateassistance,butsince thentheyhavebeendenied anyformofGovernmentaid. TheCatholiccomplainthas alwaysbeenthatnotonly haveCatholicshadtobuild andmaintaintheirown schools,butthroughtaxation theyhavealsobeenforcedto supporttheStateschoolsto whichtheycannotinconsciencesendtheirchildren.

UptoWorldWarII,the

CommonwealthGovernment andtheN.S.W.Government eachleviedtaxes,andState schoolsweremaintained,exclusivelyoutofStateGovernmentrevenue.Duringthe waryearsthevariousAustralianStatesagreedtoauniformtaxationplanandhandedoveralltheirtaxingpowerstotheCommonwealth Government.Thepractice nowisthateachyearthe Commonwealthallotsacertainamountofmoneytoeach State,andoutofthisgrant comesthemoneyforState education.

ALeadForOtherStates.

Inrecentyearsstrongpres-South,Wales,and,shoulda surehasbeenexertedonthe CommonwealthGovernment toprovidelargesumsof moneyspecificiallyforeducationpurposes.TheTeachers'Federationhasaskedthat asumofover£200,000,000 shouldbeprovidedbythe Commonwealth.Nogrant hasyetbeenmade,butall politicalpartiesareagreed thatsubstantialCommonwealthassistancetothe Statesforeducationisnecessaryandinevitable.

Atpresent-aLabourGovernmentisinpowerinNew

Ifyouthinkofthedefinitionof superstitionwhichIgaveyou someminutesago,youwillfind thatthereisnothingsuperstitiousaboutthewayinwhicha Catholictreatstheseobjects.

ASLIGHTRISK

Ofcourse,thereisalwaysa possibilitythatsuperstitionmay insinuateitselfevenintopious practices.Thatisonereason whyIamnotwildlyenthusiasticwhenIhearofCatholicemblemssuchasmedalsofOur LadyortheSaints,beinggiven tonon-Catholics.Iwouldlike tobeassuredthatthegiverex- plained,justwhatourdoctrine isonthismatter,andthatthe medalisnotsomethingtoberegardedasakindofcharm.

Bellochimselfmakesnosecretofhisloveoflifeandhis capacityforwine-buthe'sa manofironconvictionswhen greatissuesareatstake.We mightalmostsayhe'shatedno man-onlyideaswhichhe's judgedtobecontemptibleor noxious.Hispassionfortruth, histremendousmentaland physicalenergy,hisclarity, hislogic,makehimirresistible.Onewhohasknown himformanyyearswrites:

"ListeningtoBellocisintoxicating.Ihaveheardmanybrillianttalkersbutnonetowhom thatwordcansojustlybeapplied.Hegoestoyourhead,he takesyouoffyourfeet,he leavesyoubreathless,hecan convinceyouofanything."

Theseareonlyemployed,he says,for"ritualadornmentand terror."Asaresulthe'sbeen criticisedforrashgeneralisationsandover-simplification. True:hedoesmakebroad sweeping.atatementsthatare sometimesirritating,butthere's alwaysalotoftruthinthem. Perhaps,asMartindalesuggested,heexpectsmeticulousscholarswithplentyoftimeontheir handstocomealongand"lop offtheexcrescences!" Bellochasneverclaimedto beamasterofdetail.Hesays hisobjectistopenetratetothe soulofthepast-"toestablish characterandmotive."ButI can'tconcedethathetriesto over-simplifyissues.Forexample,heclaimsRichelieutobe thefounderofmodernEurope butpresentlyadds:"Innumerablefactorscombineinthe inextricablecomplexityofour Europeanstory.Oneman,even thegreatest,doesbuthispart." Hisso-calledsimplificationis oftenratherageniusforcoordinatingdetail:asharpnessof focusinjudgment.Heunderstandsmankindthoroughlyand haswellobservedthatthetest ofanhistorianisthe"consonanceordissonanceofhis statementswithwhatwealso knowofhumannature."

HilaireBelloc'shistorical spanembracessome2000years. Andhemakeserrorsindetail? Yes.ButIstressthatinthe mainoutlineofhistoryhe's beenamazinglycorrect.And he'sdonehisutmosttovitalise history:aresurrectionofthe flesh;asMicheletwishedit.He admits,however,thatsuchvivid presentationofhistorycarries withitacertainsuspicion,but assureshisreadersthathisdetailscanbeprovedtrue"from thewitnessofcontemporaries... andpublicrecords."Andhe adds:"Ihavebutrarelyillustratedthesourcesfromwhich thedetailswerederivedbecauseifthismethodweremade todependonfootnotesthere wouldbenoreadingofthe book."

WARNINGS

BecauseBelloc'sinterests haveledhimintomanyfields somepeoplehaveaccusedhim ofbeingsuperficial;he'snota specialist,theysay.Butdon't youthinkthatspecialisationcan bringwithitcertainlimitations?Themoreasciencegrows, thenarrowerbecomethelimits withinwhichspecialisationmust beconfined.Andwhat'sthe result?Oftenanappallingignoranceoftheworldatlarge:the `one-track-mind'mentality.Not soBelloc.He'sarealpersonality;andoneofthemostdiversifiedandbrilliantofourday.

Firstly,letusexaminehisapproachtohistory.WithBelloc historyhasbeenalmostan obsession;thegreatestandmost importantofallstudies.A knowledgeofhistory,hemaintains,isessentialtoanunderstandingoflife,aguidetothe future,andasoberingcorrectivetothat"parochialismin time"whichBertrandRussell rightlydescribesasoneofthe greatfaultsofourmodernsociety.Bellocwrites:

"Tostudysomethingofa greatageuntilonegrows familiarwithitandalmostto liveinitstime,isnotmerely tosatisfyacuriosityorto establishaimlesstruths:itis rathertofulfilafunction whoseappetitehasalways renderedhistoryanecessity. Bytherecoveryofthepast, stuffandbeingareaddedto us;ourliveswhich,livedin thepresentonlyareafilmor surface,takeonbody-are Riftedintoonedimension more."

AMAZINGCLARITY

Ifamanwishestoconvince, saysBelloc,hemusthavenot onlyideas,butalsostyle-and Belloccertainlyhasthat.Many maycriticisewhathesays,but notthewayhesaysit.Thereis thatextraordinaryprecision:a mindnevertortuous,butbold, directandrighttothepoint.No sopsheretothepseudo-intellectualsandtheircultofobscurantism!HilaireBelloc'swritings willneverattractacoterie.His stuffhasthatuniversalflavour aboutit:it'swrittenforEveryman.Clarity,notwaterybut crystalline,istheessenceofhis prose.AndhereagainImust stresstheheredityfactor: rememberhe'shalfFrench. Lucidity,logic,order,fastidious taste,precision,-theseare Frenchvirtues,enrichedbyhis Englishhumourandrobustexpansiveness.

Heoncetoldafriendthathis intentionwastowriteasimple anddirectproseasplainas "Maryhadalittlelamb."and elsewhereheconfessesacravingforEnglishthatis"healthy, heartyandstraightforward." Forthemostpartheysesordinarywords-butnotinthe ordinaryway.Thereisthat 'highsimplicity'withaneasy colloquialpitch.Surelythisis thatperfectionofdictionof whichAristotlespeaks,that whichis"clearandnotmean... beingmadeupoftheordinary wordsforthings."Mr.Belloc hasmasteredalltheotheressentialsofstyle:terseness,commandofmetaphor,vividimagery,rhythm,music-musicwith extraordinarypowersofvariation.Therearemanynotesin Belloc'sscaleandeveryinstrumentofhisorchestrahecan exploittothefull.

Mr.Belloc'sbiasagainstreferencesiscertainlyregrettable -butthere'snolackofhistoriansfamousfordocumentation anddetail.Whatwereallylack arehistorianswhocanpredict thefuturefromtheirunderstandingofpastandpresent events.This,precisely,isBelloc'speculiargenius.Prof.F.A. Hayek,inhisepoch-making book,'TheRoadtoSerfdom', remarksthatHilaireBelloc's `ServileState',writtenin1913, "explainsmoreofwhathashappenedinGermany(underthe NaziGovernment)thanmost bookswrittenaftertheevent." Herearesomeexamplestoillustratemypoint:morethan twentyyearsagohewarnedof thethreattotheEmpirefrom Japan;theimportanceofkeepingItaly'sfriendshipinthe Mediterranean;thegrowing strengthofGermanyandthe awfulriskwetookinallowing hertorearm,andinfailingto

AmongthemajorfaultsI wouldlistthepoorqualityofthe choralsections-afaultwhich shouldnothavebeensoobvious afteroveraweek'srun,Itwas particularlybadintheoff-stage chorusintheclosingscene, wherethetenorlinewasconsistentlyflat.Whentheywere onstagethechorusdidbetter work, divorcedbutwerepractically fromtheorchestra, whichwasoftenawholebeat awayfromthevoicesforbarson end.Thisapparentobliviousnessonthepartoftheorchestra towhatwasgoingononstageappliedquitefrequentlytothe soloists'accompanimentsaswell andparticularlytotheduetat theendofSceneI.intheThird Act.Theorchestra,incidentally,appearedtobeanentirely professionalone,andonthat .scoremustbearthebruntof mycriticism,becauseIcanhonestlysaythatIhavenever heardDonizettimurderedso foully,and,iftheaimoftheSocietyis,asappearedintheprogramme"topromote'theappreciationofOperainallways,"I feeltheyaregoingaboutitina verystrangeway.Itseemsto methatitwouldbefarbetter toimportfortheoccasiona reallycompetentmusicianwho wouldarrangeabalancedensemblethatcoulddojusticeto themusicalscore,andsohave atleastoneingredientofgood standard.AgainstsuchabackgroundIhavenodoubtthatthe castandchoruswouldbestimulatedtoafarbetterperformanceatleastonthemusicalside.

RonaldDowddidnotappear happyintheroleofthelover, Ernesto.Hisactionsandgestureswereheavyandhisvoice toolight. Icanquitebelieve arumourIheardthathisvoice hadbrokendownduringthe week,but,ifso,wasthereno understudy?Itisnotanexactingtenorpart,consisting mainlyofduets,triosandquartettes,andintheseitwas scarcelyeverpossibletohear whetherheformedpartornot.

Thebalanceofvoicesthroughouttheeveningwaspoor,andit wouldprobablyhavebeenbettertohaverearrangedthesets sothattheweakvoicesofSylvia BiddleandRonaldDowdwere

Wehavehadavarietyof conductorsvisitingPerthsince thewar,rangingfromAmerica toCzechoslovakia,andwehave becomeusedtoatouchofflamboyancyintheContinental rrusicianswhohavemounted therostrumattheCapitol.It was,therefore,somethingofa relieftofindthatourfirstItalianconductorsincethewarwas apersonwithoutmannerisms,an obviouslysincere musician whoseeverygesture,curtailed tothebarestessentials,hadsignificanceaswellasgrace,It wasratherapitythatsucha lotofhisdirectionswerelost onthebacie-benchersintheOrchestra,whosenosesappeared tobegluedtotheirmusicso firmlythatonseveraloccasions onbothnightsGallierawas forcedtotheextremityofusing hisvoiceaswellashishandsto drawtheattentionoftheplayerstoachangeoftempo,orvolumewhichhadpassedunnoticed forabarorso.Theworstinstanceofthisoccurredinthe firstbaroftheFinaleofthe Brahms'Symphony,inwhich thestringsweresofarapartas tobealmostontwoseparate beats.Thisisoneofthebig failingsofan"augmented'"Orchestra,whentheranksofthe stringshavetobeswelledwith part-timemusicianswhohave usuallyneverseentheworkto beplayeduntiltherehearsals, andwhodonotplayoften enough,tobeabletolearn theirpartsquickly,andsofree theireyesforanoccasional glanceatthecelebritywhohas beenbroughthereatgreatexpenseto(sofarastheyare concerned)wavehishands heedlesslyintheair.

Despitethisdrawback,the FourthConcertinthe1950 SubscriptionSerieswasthe bestthisyear,andthecredit mustgototheconductor,who hadobviouslylabouredmanfullywithourlimitedresourcesduringrehearsals.Twoinstancesof babilityGalliera'simperturontheMondaynight impressedme.Thefirstwas whenheremovedthestand withthescoreoftheBrahms (whichheconductedonboth nightsfrommemory),and then,findingthepodiumtoo farawayfromthefrontranks, bentdownandpusheditforwardintoamoreconvenient positionwithanapologeticgrin aroundhisshoulderatthe frontrowoftheaudience.The secondwasafterthesecond movementoftheBrahms,in whichavariationinthepitch oftheinstrumentswasnoticeable,andhegavedirectionsfor a withtuning-upbeforeproceeding amagnificentinterpreta tionoftheScherzo.Perhaps itwouldhelptomakethiscritiquemorepleasantelsewhere ifImentionthepoorintona-tionof ningthehornsatthebeginoftheSymphony,Ahich musthavemadeshuddersrun downtheconductor'sspine. Theconcertopenedwiththe "Hebrides"Overture,byMen-

delssohn,inwhichtheOrchestraplayedperfectly.Theonly thinglackingwasthevolume ofbeautifulsoundwhichcomes fromanadequatenumberof stringsThewavesthemehad toberestrainedtoapoint whereitnolongergavetheimpressionofthethunderofthe Atlanticbutrathertherippling ofatidalstream. Thelackofnumberstold heavilyagainstthe"ConcertinoPastorale"ofJohnIreland WrittenfortheBoydNeel StringOrchestra,thiswork simplyclamoursformassed stringsplayedwithexquisite tone.Theeffectwhenplayed byasmallgroupisthatthe nuancesarereducedtoalevel whereitisdifficulttoappreci- atethem,andtheworkbecomesalittlemonotonous.Not thatthisappliedtothesecond movement,inwhichtherewas somereallybeautifulplaying.

Thesoloistfortheevening wasaverypleasantsurprise, asPerthaudiencesknew nothingoftheAdelaidepianist,RaymondO'Connell.The notesintheprogrammegave animpressivearrayofachievementsforayoungmanwhoappearstobestillwellunder thirty,andhisplayingofthe 4th.PianoforteConcertoof Beethovenindicatesthatthis pianistwillgoaverylongway indeedontheconcertplatform. Heiscompletelyunaffectedin style,andhistechniqueismasterly,beautifullyclean-fingering,andafinecontrolof nuance.TheonlyfaultIcould detectwasaslightweakness inhisleft-handplaying,but eventhismaybedueinsome measuretotheacousticsofthe "Capitol."FromtheconductorwhowontheFrenchprize forthefinestconcertorecordedlastyearwhenhedirected the-PhilharmoniaOrchestra withArturSchnabelassoloistinthe"Emperor"Concerto, itwasnaturaltoexpectthe bestaccompanimentpossible, andtheaudiencewasnotdisappointed.Theorchestraacted asaperfectfoilforthesoloist, andtheresultwasaverysatisfyingperformance.

Ihavesaidenoughderogatory thingsabouttheBrahmsSymphonyNo.2inDMajor,which occupiedthesecondhalfofthe evening.Letmemakeamends byaddingthat,despitecertain imperfectionsduemainlytoour lackofaregularSymphonyOr-chestraofdecentproportions,theworkasawholewasgiven averyfinerendition,andinpar- ticulartheScherzowasmagni-ficentlyhandled.

Somuchhashappenedsince mylastletter,fromLourdes, thatitisimpossibletocraminto thisanythingbutabaredescriptionofaveryrapidsuccession ofremarkableevents.This morningisgloriouslymildand sunnyinLisbonand,contraryto expectation,thejourneyhere wascomparativelycoolafter theheatexperiencedthrough France.Anumberofpilgrims, actingonadvice,didnotattempt thepassagetoFatima,but,asit hasturnedout,theweatherand otherthingshavebeenexceptionallyfavourable.

RainfellheavilyastheAustralianpilgrimswaitedinthe trainfortheirdeparturefrom Lourdes,coolingtheairnicely forthejourneytotheborder. Soonafterturningsouth,at Bayonne,theAtlanticOcean cameintoview,anditwasnot longbeforethetrainpulledinto Hendaye,lasttownonthe Frenchside.Crossingoverthe internationalbridge,withits sentriesateachend,pilgrims wereinIrunjustbefore6.30 p.m.andpassedwithoutundue delaytoanotherplatformwhere theywaitedfortheSpanish trainwhichwastotakethemon thebroadergauge.Aposteron theplatformadvertisedcheerfully:"Spain-wherethesun shinesandlifesmiles."The train,whenitbackedin,was foundtobenewandwellequipped,cleanandcomfortable,the best,infact,inourEuropean journey.

Afterastophere,withthecustomaryinspectionofpassports, thetrainpassedoverthefrontieranddrewusintothefirst Portuguesetown,VilerFormoso, Immediately,Portugalintroduceditselfwithanexhibition ofitscelebratedtiles.The lovelylittlerailwaystation, gleamingwhite,wasdecorated withblueandyellowtiles,descriptive,inpictures,ofcultural scenesofPortugueselife-the' UniversityofCoimbra,andsuch like.Herewesawthatbeautifulblue,forwhichPortugalis famous.Ontheothersideof thelineagreatnotice,alsoin bluetilesagainstwhite,said simply,"Portugal."Thenames ofthestationsallalongthe route,werelikewiseplainlyset forthintiles,withacandournot exhibitedbyothercountries, which,forsomereason,seem disinclinedtolettravellersknow easilywheretheyhappentobe. WearrivedatLisboncloseon 9p.m.,Thursday,July6,passingaparticularlyuglyslum areanearthestation.Butthis, itwaseasytosee,wasasituationthatPortugalisdealing withinanenergeticmanner.

Lisbonhasanamazingnumber ofnewbuildings.Theyarein evidenceeverywhere.Coloured innot-too-brightpastelshades, pink.blue,andinvaryingdegreestolightbiscuit,withcontrastingshuttersandtheinevitableredroofs,theyarejollyin appearanceandmakethecity lookspickandspan.Vastareas oftlesenewhouses,orflats,can

beseeninlongrows-streetsof them;butitisonlybyclimbing tothetopofahill,overlooking thecity,thatonegetsanadequateideaoftheextentofthis renovation.Ofthehalfcircle spreadoutbelow,allbutasmall segment,likeasliceofcake, appearsnewandcolourful.The older,mainthoroughfares,with theirfineshops,aremagnificent, andtherearesplendidroadsand numerouspublicutilities,such

BATTLEABBEY.

FromAlcobacatheconvey proceededtoanotherfamous andarchitecturalandreligious monument,therenownedBattle Abbey,atBatalha.This,Our LadyoftheVictory,isclaimed bysometobetheloveliest churchinthewholeworldand wasoncethehomeoftheDominicans.It,too,isamiracleof stoneornamentation,exquisite cloistersandaRoyalMausoleum,whereresttheremainsof manyPortuguesesovereigns. TheabbeywasbuiltbyJohnI. tocommemoratehisvictoryover theSpaniards,andhere,again, oneprayedthatitwouldinthe notdistantfutureberestoredto thesonsofSt.Dominic.Like themonasteryatAlcobaca,the BattleAbbeyisperfectlypreserved.

TOFATIMA.

"Themiracleofthesun"occurredatFatima,Portugal,onOctober 13th,,1917,andwaswitnessedby70,000people. asthereallybeautifulnewnationalstadium,thebestexampt'e yetseenofplain,functionalarchitecturethatmanagestobe handsomeandpleasing.

TRANSFORMATION.

Thisre-building,orthorough modernisation,goesonrapidly, IwastoldbyanIrishpriest, residentherefor50years.In fact,he'says,ithappensalmost overnight,Accordingtohis memory,thetransformation duringthelastgenerationisincredible.Buteventhevisitor, hereforonlyadayorso,can seetheproofofthestatementin whatheseesaroundhim.

Therewasnodoubtlefttothe populationthattheAustralian pilgrimswereontheirway.

MONUMENT.

AfterleavingBathalha,the busesleftthemainroadand turnedoffalongaroutethat broughtpilgrimstowardsalong ridge,orrangeofmountainthat stoodbleakandrockyandarid againstthesky,aformidable contrasttotheproductiveland againstitsfoot.Theroadapproachedthismountainandbegantoascendbyaseriesofzigzagturnsandhairpinbends. Frombelow,therecouldbeseen onthesummitthreewindmills, slowlyturning,andacross. Afteralongandtortuousclimb, thecountrywehadleftbehind wasspreadoutlikeadistant carpet,farbelow.Atlast,we passedbythewindmillsandthe crossandknewthatwewereon topofthemountain.Fromhere theroadturnedinlandandbeforelongonecouldrecognisein therockygroundthetypeof countryseeninpicturesof Fatima.Herewerethelow stonefences,ordivisions, madebypilingupstones, heretheshort,ostuntedspeciesofnativeoakanddwarf

CANDLE-LIGHTPROCESSION

Thefirstthingwastodisembarkatourresidences.They wereplain,homely,withno frills,butnobodyworriedabout that,Iimagine.Itwascloseon 6p.m.andtherewerestilla coupleofhourstotheevening meal,somostpilgrimsmadefor theshrinesintheCovaandfor theBasilica,toweringoverthe countryside.Theshrineisa poor,and,Isuppose,temporary affair,somethinglikeashed,in whichisatinychapelcontaininganaltarandthestatueof OurLadyoftheRosaryofFatima.Thereisroomonlyfora coupleofpeoplebeforethealtar andtheentranceisthrougha narrowdoorwhichallowsonly onetopassinoroutatatime. Thisisveryinconvenientfor thedistributionofCommunion. Beforethedoor,apaceortwo, standsacolumnaboutfivefeet high,exactlyabovethespot whereOurLadyappeared.Here thedevoutfaithfulgatherfor MassandheretheAustralian pilgrimsassembledat9,30p.m. fortheirprocession.Fr.Perkins, assistantdirectorofthepilgrim_ age,whotravelledwiththisfirst traingroup,inashortinstructiveaddress,explainedthehistoryoftheapparitionsandexhortedalltojoinintheprocessioninthespiritoftheFatima pilgrimage,then,withlighted candles,insmallpapershades, asin wendedLourdes,thepilgrims theirwayaroundthe Cova,recitingtheRosaryand climbedthestepsoftheBasilica,whereBenedictionofthe BlessedSacramentwasgiven.

woodenandbare.Stoneside altarshavebeenerectedand overtheseaseriesofmetal plaquesrepresentingtheMysteriesoftheRosaryarebeing placedinposition.TheCova, itselfisalsointhehands ofthebuilders.Itsshapeisnow surfacedwiththebrownearth andthestoneapproachandsort ofrotundabuildingroundthe statueoftheSacredHeartinthe centre,seeninpicturesofFatimatakenacoupleofyears ago,havedisappeared.Itseems thatmoreroomhadtobeprovidedfortheenormouscrowdsof pilgrimsthatnowarriveonthe specialoccasions,normallyon the13th.ofthemonthsof MaytoOctober.Workmenare workingontheCova,blasting rockattheendofitandextendingitbyshovellingaway thestoneandremovingitin littletrucks.Practicallyall tracesoftheCovathatthethree childrenknewhavebeenobliterated.Thisisinevitable,of course,forthereisnotatFatimaanenduringgrottosuchas thereisatLourdes,butthe atmosphereoftheapparitions remains,unsupportedbyfeaturesofscenery.

WHERETHECHILDREN PRAYED.

AwayfromtheCova,the sceneisdifferent.Thatisto say,itremainsmuchasitwas 30yearsago.Oneofthefirst thingswastoenquiretheway tothevillageofFatimaandto visitthecemeterywherestands thetombofJacintaandFrancesco.Thisjourney,forabouta miletotheeastoftheCova, windsthroughapracticallly untouchedcountryside,thougha signpost,hereandthere,anda newhouseortwoareadditions tothelandscape.Butthevillagechurch,wherethethree childrenwerebaptized,carries onebacktotheirday.Itisan cldstonebuilding,withatower andapleasantlysoundingbell thatcarriesfarinthequietair, butinsideitispoorandaustere, instinctwiththespiritofthe children.Thechurchseemsto navebeenheightened,forthere isadate,1924,onthearchabove thesanctuary,butotherwiseone imaginesittobemuchthe sameasLucy,Jacintaand Francescoknewittobe.The flooriswooden,raisedtwoor threeinchesaboveatiledaisle, leadingfromthefrontdoor, ahcvewhichthereisasmall ,hairloft.Theroof,wooden,is faded.Aroundthewallsisa dadooftiles,ofindifferent design,andonthestonecolumns f'henavethepicturesofthe StationsoftheCrossareapoor, cheapsetofprints,inthe cheapestofframes.Aseriesof sodalitybanners,allbearingthe inscription"NossaSenhorade RosariodaFatima,"stand aroundthewalls,andatthe

Nearbyisthecemetery. There,justinsidetheirongates, ofrecentdate,isthesimple tomb,withtheinscription, "HerelietheremainsofJacintaandFrancescotowhom OurLadyappeared."Atthe backofthelittlecolumnsthat standatthehead,isablueand whitetiledpictureofOurLady ofFatima,beforewhicharea fewcheatglassvasesofdaisies andgreentwigsfrombushesor shrubscloseby.Attachedtoa small,woodenboxforofferings isanoriginalprintofthephotographofthethreechildrenthat isfamiliarnowthroughoutthe world.

Asthetwoorthreepilgrims whohastenedtothecemeteryas soonaspossibleafterarrivalin FatimaOlenbythetomb,a littlegirlcameandrenewedthe flowersinthevases.Sheseemed acustodianoftheshrine.The stoneworkisconsiderablydefacedbysouvenirorrelichunterswhohavechippedpiecesoff withknives.Buthereisoneof themostreverentplacesofpilgrimage.Inthesmallenclosure ofthecemeteryaround,white daisiesbloomabundantlyandin thepeaceofthegatheringnight thisspotinFatimaseemsmost remotefromtheworld.

THEHOME

Onthenextdayvisitswere madebythepilgrims,mostlyin smallgroups,tothehomesof Lucyandhercousins,Jacinta andFrancesco.Theyareinthe samestreet,betterdescribedas acountrylane,leadingoffthe roadfromtheCovatothevillageofFatima.Here,onthe waytoAljustral,aremetthe littledonkeycart,littlepeasant girls,dressedexactlylikeLucy andJacintainthephotograph, carryingbundlesontheirheads, andboys,justthesameas Francesco.AtLucy'shomewe wereprivilegedtoenterher room,kneelbesideherbed,see hercrucifixonthewallofthe adjoiningroom.Atthehomeof hercousins,'therewastheprivilegeagainofkneelingbythe bedinwhichFrancescodied, andwhichJacinta,too,occupied beforeshewastakenofftothe hospitalinLisbon.Itisasmall, ironbedstead,withawobbly knobononecorner,thatspeaks eloquentlyofthelittleboywho becameamysticafterhehad seenOurLady.Everyonewho knowsthehistoryofFatima mustloveFrancescoespecially, andthereverenceonefeltin enteringhislittleroommust remainbeyondthepowerof wordstodescribe.Thisroom andtheroomofLucyareboth keptspotlesslycleanandtidy, verydifferentfromtheroomof BernadetteatLourdes.

FAREWELL

OnecametolovethecountrysideatFatima,withitssimple farmsandunspoiltpeople.But wehadtoleave.Ontheway pastthecemeterythebuses stopped,andthosewhohadnot yetvisitedthereandotherswho had,wenttovisitthetombof thetwochildren.There,waiting,weretheparentsofJacinta andFrancesco.Old,kindly,shy. Theycameoutsideandstoodat thegateswavingtotheAustral_ ianpilgrimageastheytook leaveofFatima.BySaturday nightthepilgrimswereback againinLisbon.Here,itisfittingtoend,forFatimafillsthe memory,andanythingelseat themomentisunbecoming.

Cloverisaboutasunattractive asgrasstothehumanpalate,but Oxalishassappystemsanda pleasantacidtangwhennibbled.Inlargequantitiesits oxalicacidcontentwouldmake itdangerous,perhaps,butnibbledasadelicacyitisasacceptableas,say,rhubarb.
