Lourdesatlast!Thefirst divisionoftheAustralianNationalPilgrimagearrivedhere at9.10p.m.onFriday,June 30,afteralmost15hours'train journeyonanexceedinglyhot day.Theearlypartofthat journeywasreferredtoinmy lastletter,aswewerespeeding towardsMarseilles.AtNimes thesteamenginewhichhad drawnussmoothlyandswiftly fromNicewasrelievedbyan electricenginewhichprovided locomotionuntilourarrivalat Lourdes.AtToulousewe changeddirection.Thetrain reversedandturnedtowards thesouth.Aftersometime weachievedourfirstglimpse ofthefoothillsofthePyrenees, andforsomelittledistanceran closebytheRiverGaronne.
RURALFRANCE.

REMARKABLESPIRITUAL ATMOSPHERE.
Alatedinnerwasawaitingpilgrimsattheirvarioushotels, but,afterjusticehadbeendone toit,andafteraquickbrushup,mostpilgrims,Ibelieve, hastenedouttofindtheGrotto. Fromthishotel,theRoyal,itis amatterofonlyafewminutes toreachtheSanctuaries.Crowds werestillattheGrotto,after
discoveredthereapackedcongregationattendingaHolyHour, giveninaforeignlanguage whichwasafterwardsfoundto beFlemish.Thecongregation consistedof1,800Flemishworkers.AftertheHolyHour,as midnightapproached,HighMass wascommenced.Inthemeantime,stormthreatened.Vivid lightningflashedthroughthe windowsofthechurchandin

Theyturnedoutinforceforthe processionandledthewayfrom theGrotto,eachcarrying,asdo allpilgrims,alightedcandle, whichisshieldedfromthewind byapapershade.Ontheshade isprintedthewordsofthe Lourdeshymn.TheprocessionwoundroundfromtheGrottoto thefrontofthechurchesand mountedthelongstoneramp, withitshandsomebalustrades, thatleadstothetopofthe ChurchoftheRosary.Itcrossed anddescendedontheotherside andthenpassedalongthelength oftheextensiveesplanade,built inbeautifulparkland.Returningontheotherpathwayofthe esplanade,theprocessionists gatheredinfrontofthechurch forBenediction.

Duringthewholecourseof theprocession,whichtookover anhourtocoverthecourse,the Lourdeshymnissung,pilgrims ofallnationsjoininginthe "Ave"refrain.Theviewfrom thetopoftherampswasunequalled;theslowlymoving streamoffaces,litbythelight ofthemyriadcandles,passing roundtheesplanadeandcrossingandre-crossingthespacein frontofthechurch.Atthe sametimethedancinglights movedupanduptherampon onesideanddowntheother.As abackground,thechurcheswere outlinedinelectriclights,abrilliantdisplaythatchangedcharacterwhen,suddenly,theglobes wereswitchedoffandpowerfulfloodlightswereturnedoninstead,illuminatingthebuildings fromtowardsthefront.

WhilstthecampwasinprogressattheY.A.L.YouthCentre,ahugedogwearingaperpetualgrinwalkedintothepremisesandaffixedhimselfto Tom,somuchsothatevenwhen Tomwenttobedthebigbeast curleduponhisbedandcontentedlyscratchedhisfleas, muchtoTom'sdisgustandto everyoneelse'samusement.
