THEINQUISITION
Andnowforaquestionfrom "D.R.P.."whichisexpressed withadmirablebrevityand clearness.Heasks:
"HowdoestheCatholic Churchregardandexplainthe InquisitionandtheIndex?"
A.:Althoughyourquestionis averyshortone,toanswerit fullywouldtakemeseveral weeks.Idon'tthinkyouwould expectmetodevotethatlength oftimetothequestion.Tobeginwith,itwouldbenecessary totrytogettheeventsintotheir truehistoricalperspective.If oneistoapplythestandardsof to-daytotheeventsofcenturiesago,theresultsaresureto beworthless.Fortunatelythis workoftryingtogettheInquisitionintohistoricalfocushas beendoneverywellbyFather EustaceBoylan,S.J.Someyears agohepublishedanAustralian CatholicTruthSocietybooklet called"TheInquisitioninthe LightofHistoricalPerspective." Irecommendthislittle workforyou.Itisgreatvalue fortwopence.
WHICHONE?
Tobeginwith,letusdivide yourquestionandaskfirstofall:
"WhatwastheInquisition?"
A.:Strictlyspeaking,itisinexacttorefertotheInquisition, sincetherewereseveralofthem andtheseseveralinstitutions differedconsiderablyonefrom theother.Theydiffered,for example,intheirorigin,which wassometimespoliticalornationalas,forinstance,inSpain. Theydiffered,too,intheirprocedure,whichwasinfluencedby theconstitutionoftheStatesin whichtheyfunctioned.They differed,too,intheactionwhich theytook.
Whentheordinarymaninthe streetthinksoftheInquisition itisgenerallytheSpanishInquisitionwhichhehasinmind. Itwouldperhapsbemoreaccuratetosaythatwhathehas atthebackofhismindissome ratherluridworkoffictionthat hehasreadabouttheatrocities perpetratedinSpaininthe nameofreligion.Evenifthe bookinquestionsetouttogive ahistoricalaccountofthese events, itismorethanlikely thatitwaslargelyfictionalin character.
