FatherCostelloethepriest-in_ chargeofthenewparish,extendedaheartywelcometoHis Graceandthankedthepeople ofTambellup,andespecially thosemenandwomenwhohad workedsohardtohavethe placelookingsowell.
HisGracecongratulatedFatherCostelloeandthepeople ofTambellupontheimprovementmadeinsuchashort time.Heremindedthepeople oftheirgoodfortuneinhaving aparishoftheirown,andtheir ownparishpriesttotendtotheir spiritualwants.

Themarriageofpassionis notworththeaccompanying risksanddangers-thechief ofwhichistransience.The mixedmarriage,especially whenthefacultiesfordivorce aretakenintoaccount,tends alwaystobeafragilething. Thereisnopointinblinking thefactthatwherereligion isconcerned,passionatelove tendsalmostinvariablyto manifestadeteriorationin character,inasmuchasit causesonepartnertobepreparedinexplicablytojettison areligionwhichheorshe knowstobetrue,satisfying andthefocalpointofhappiness.Inthatitleadstointellectualconfusionandflaccidityofwillitisindeedbad. *
ObjectionstoPsychoAnalysis.
Thefourtharticleofthe series,byMr.ErnestJones, apsycho-analyist,hasi'not thecompellingqualitiesofits predecessors.Perhapsthis arisesfromthefactthatpsychologyisnotanexactscience,ifitisascienceatall. Furthermore,agreatdeal thatispopularlywrittenand talkedonthesubjectistenuous,apartaltogetherfrom beingatloggerheadswith Christianfundamen'tals. Whatischieflystrikingis thefactthatthetheoriesto whichpsycho-analystsattach somuchimportancemayexplainagreatdeal,butthey leaveanevengreateramount unexplained.Or,alternatively,theyexplaininacomplexandabtrusefashion whatmaybemoresimply andsatisfyinglyunderstood on altogetherdifferent grounds.Aboveall,there
Mr.Jonesrightlyblames "Civilisation"forthehavoc ofmaladjustmentwhichadmittedlydoesexistinthisrespect.Whathedoesnot mentionisthatitismot'sthe artificialitywhichmodern paganismhasintroduced thannormal,naturalpracticeswhichhassownthe cropofneuroticismweare reapingto-day.Therehas probablyalwaysbeensome, measureof"incompatibility" inthephysicalrelationships ofthemaritalstate.Butonly afoolhardypersonwould denythatcontraception, abortionandattendantevils arethemainfactorsinthe floodofnervousdisordersto befoundinourgeneration amongmarriedpeople,especiallythosewhoaredeliberately,childless.TheChurch hasneverbeenabletoagree withthedisciplesofFreud, whoseemarriage,astheydo everythingelse,riddenwith sex.Neither'hasSheany patiencewithManicheism, whichtriestoregardmarriageasapurelyspiritual union.Thebodyexists;it wascreatedbyGoditsprocreativeurgesaregoodprovidedtheyaredirectedto theirnaturalandproper ends.
Mr.Jonesisthethirdof fourwritersinthisseries whoreferstothepopularly acceptednotionoflove.His versionisthateveryone,subconsciously,hasinhisheart theimageofaperfectmate whoisnevermetintheflesh except"inmomentsofecstasy-whichisknownasthe illusionoflove."Thisis undeniable,especiallyamong theveryyoung.Theproblemarises,canoneputup withthedisillusionandthe disappointment?Mr.Jones pleadsfortoleranceandvery sensiblysuggeststhatone maycome"tolovethembecauseoftheirbeingpartof thepersononeloves."We recall,inthisrespect,the wisewordsofG.K.Chesterton:"Dreamsarenosin,oronlysin Tothosewho,waking,dream theydream; ButIhavefoundwhatwiser knightsfollowTheGrailandnotthegleam."

Thedoctorisonsolidearth inthematterofphysicalattractionbeingnoenduring basisformarriage.Indeed hegrantsthatthedayswhen parentsarranged"matches" wereconsiderablysuccessful.Helaysgreatweight onthefactthatmodern womenwillnotbecontent with"dulldomesticity." Marriage,heinformsus,is nowapartnershipbetween co-equals.Thewifeis"no longercontent,asherpredecessorwas,toremainat homeinthenarrowsphere ofthenurseryandkitchen."
Onefanciesthatherethe doctorisspeakingrather fromtheplatformofhisown socialstatusthanfromgeneralexperience. Igor,we believe,womenstillfundamentallyseekthesecurity ofahomeandthesatisfactionofchildren.Itisrather curiousthatstatisticssubsequentlyquotedbythedoctor seemtorefutehisviewin thisdirection.
Onthequestionofsexual maladjustment,thedoctor, whileadmittingitsfrequency,blamesratheremotionaldifficultiesasthecommonestcauseofbrokenmarriages.Attheriskofperseveration,wemustunderlinethatemotionaldifficultiesusuallyspringfromthe warpedromanticnotionsof loveandfromexcessiveattachmenttophysicalattractions.Furthermorewedo notacceptthenotionofhusbandandwifeas"co-equals."

SHAPEOFTHINGSTOCOME.
Ourmorningcontemporaryistobecongratulatedontheexcellentseriesofarticles,"Marriage andMorals,"recentlypublishedinitscolumns.It isallthemorerefreshingafterthestale,pessimisticviewsofEarlRussell.Itisnotatallcommon tofindnewspapersgivingreallypracticalhelpand adviceonsuchtopicsas"thejoysofrearingalarge family,"and"thestabilityofthenationrestson thehome."Onthecontrary,itismuchmore usualtofindsomemalicious,and,ofcourse, anonymousmuck-rakertryingtobreakupthe homesofdecentpeoplelikeBingCrosbyand FrankSinatrawho,perhapscoincidentally,happen tobeCatholics.
Toagreatextentthisphenomenonofjournalisticconcentrationonmarriageandfamilylife maybeconsideredareflectionofpopularfeeling, andassuchareactionistobenotedagainstthe pagan,amoralconceptionssoprevalentsincethe depressionyears. Egotism,whichisthechief causeof\tar,isalsothelargestsinglecontributory factortodepopulation.
Butthereisundoubtedlyapronouncedrevulsionagainstitinourday,eventhoughthatrevulsionissuesoutofnohighersentimentthanthe needofself-preservation. EventheMaithusian philosopher,EarlRussell,wascompelledtomodify hisviewsofbirth-preventioninviewofthestark realitiesoftheAustralianscene. Itnowappears thatcontraceptionisverybadforAustralians,but verygoodforAsiatics.UnhappilyfortheEarl andhisdreamworld,theAsiaticswillnothavea barofit,andmorepowertotheirarm!
When,then,istheexplanationofthisvoltefaceonthepartoftheAustralianpeople?Itisan uncomplimentaryreflection,butperhapsthemain sourceofthechangeistobefoundinfear.It wouldbepleasanttobelievethatanexplanation couldbefoundinarevivalofreligion,butwemust facethedepressingfactthatournationalspiritual horizonsareboundedbymaterialism,forthereinforcementofwhichanendlessstreamofrecruits poursfromtheschoolsoftheState.Henceitis inmaterialconsiderationsthatenlightenmentmust besought.
EversinceMr.A.A.Colwellinauguratedthe vigorousimmigrationpolicy,verylargenumbersof NewAustralianshavebeenswellingournational reservoir.Itisplainthattheold,leisurelytempo ofAustralianlifeisboundtobedisturbed.There willbeaquickeningofthepulseofthenation whichwilldoubtlessbeatfirstresented.Thevolumeofindustrialproductionwillgraduallybeaccelerated,notonlybytheincreasingnumbersengageduponit,butbyagreaterdiligenceandin, creasedefficiency.
However,theintroductionoftheforty-hour weekmayhavefulfilledtheidealsoftheLabour Party,therearefewthinkingpeoplewhowillnot admit,inretrospect,thatitsintroductionwasilltimed.Butapartaltogetherfromthisconsideration,thereisnodenyingthatAustralianindustry ischaracterised,byandlarge,byacasualnessand languorwhichinamorehonestageusedtobedescribedassloth.Thefusionofnewbloodintothe arenawillbechieflyremarkablefortheintroductionofpeoplewhohavearealtraditionofhonest labour.Thereisboundtoberesentmentatthe outsetfortherevolutionaryelementsintheUnions
faultynotionsofparents abouttheobligationsofmarriage.Sheconcludesvery soundly"Christianmarriage wasneverasoftoption. Humannaturebeingwhatit is,itcanonlyworkamonga communityofChristiansbuttressedbyalivingfaith." Thisisthesupremecase againstthemixedmarriage. FormarriageamongChristianswillwork,especiallyif theyhaveacceptedChrist's unequivocaldenunciationof divorce.Andmarriageamong paganswillworkiftheyobserve,asbesttheycan,the
NaturalLaw.Butmarriage betweenChristians,theone acceptingallandtheother partoftheChristianRevelation,isboundtodevelop strainsbecausereligionis acceptedasafundamental issue.Ontheotherhand, marriagebetweenChristians andpagans(underwhich heaadingsomanypeoplein oursocietymaybeclassed) isredolentofdifficultiesbecauseonepartyhasnoaccess atalltothespiritualmotivationoftheotherandisaptto beapreytoalltheidosyncrasiesofthemodernspirit.
havecapitalisedheavilyontheindolencewhichis. anationalcharacteristic.Theyhaveemployed itveryskilfully,representingincreasedleisureasa workingclassrightandanationalgood,whereas thecrisisofwarandthreatsofwarrevealitsother aspectasadestroyerofmoraleandasourceofirresponsibility.
Theurge,then,toincreasenationalfertility is,itseems,primarilyduetoafearthattheold orderchangeth,givingplacetothenew.We senseacomingshiftinthebalanceofpower,perhapsevenaspiritualdominance,ifnotnumerical superiority,onthepartofthehundredsofthousandsofmigrantsenteringourcountry.Wefeel theneedtoasc;ertourselvesasthemastersofour owndestinyifwedonotwishtobeswamped.In thefieldofcultureandideasthereisaneven greaterprobabilitythatweshall,seeourselvessuperseded. Perhapsourhistoricandgeographic isolationmakesthisinevitable,anditisnotcertain itwillbeabadthing.Butassuredlyitwillberesented. Thechangesenvisagedcouldeffecta revolutioniftheywerespreadovertwoorthree generations.Butthepressofevents,andespeciallyofdefence,isgoingtoprecipitatethemsuddenly,andourhyper-sensitivitywillbewoundedin directrationtothebrevityoftime.
Ifthesespeculationsarecorrect,itwouldbe logicaltoanticipateanationalrevolution,perhaps eveninapractical,materialsense.Thatthiswill notcomeaboutwillbedue,weventuretoprophesy, totheinjectionofanothercurrentoffearintoour nationalconsciousnesswhichwillcounter-balance thefirst.
Weaccepttheinfluxofnewbloodprimarily becausethelastwartaughtusthatwearetremblingontheedgeofavolcano.Ourpositionin thePacificishighlyinsecure.Onthelastoccasioninvasioncamerightuptoourshores,andthe situationwasonlysavedbythemightofAmerica. InthefivebriefyearsthathavefledsinceJapan surrendered,theover-allstrategyofdefencehas beenutterlyrevolutionised.ForRussiahasstretchedhertentaclesintotheEast,capitalisingupon legitimatenationalisticaspirationsanduponthe depressedeconomicconditionswhichtheWest,toolongnegligent,ispreparing(perhapstoolate)to ameliorate.Afterlongcenturiesofsilenceand passivity,theEastisawake,seethingwithitsmillionsinconfinedareas,andthepressofitspeople issouthwards,eversouthwards.
Thesecondelementoffear,then,isofexternalaggression.WeseetheEast(or,moreaccurately,theNorth),consciousofitsnumbersandof theslenderholdtheWesternnationshaveuponit. TheBritishhaverelinquishedIndiaandtheDutch Indonesia.Britainstrugglesineffectivelyin Malaya,theFrenchare'harrassedforfouryearsin Indo-China,andtheAmericansareatbayin Korea.HongKonghangsbyathreadandthereis openavidityoverNewGuinea.Andoverallthe shadowoftheKremlin,readytogiveaidandcomforttoanycausewhichmayultimatelyservethe purposeofherowndomination.
NoristhereanydoubtthatAsialookstoRussiaastoaleader;fortheSoviet,withitsgreat might,ismoreAsiaticingeographyandinculture thanitisEuropean.Moreover,AsiohasnotexperiencedasyetthedisillusionoftheWest,over Russia'struemotivesandtheinnervalueofher promisesandprotestations.Itistheperilofthe riseofthenon-whiteracesthatmakesuswelcome theNewAustraliansasbrothersinarms.Itused tobesaidthatthethreatofwaractedasabrake onthebirth-rate.Webelievethatitwillnow proveastimulanttopreserveournationalheritage.

TheCatholicpartnerhasduties whichcanonlybecarriedout withtheto-operationofthe otherpartner.Itseemsavery reasonablethingthattheseissuesshouldbeclearlystated rightattheoutset.Thesetalks shouldgoalongwaytowards removingwhatmighteasilybe causesoffrictionlateronin marriedlife.Then,too,they provideanopportunityofexplainingtothenon-Catholic someofthepointsinthereligion ofhislifepartnerwhichhe mightotherwisefindithardto understand.Clearingupsuch potentialmisunderstandingsbeforehandmustsurelybea benefit.
Asregardsthepromiseswhich aredemanded,whatIhavesaid alreadyoughttobeenoughto explainourattitudeonthat point.Grantedourposition thattheCatholicreligionisthe onetruereligion,itisimpossibleforustobeindifferentto thefaithoftheCatholicpartnerandofthechildren,anditis thesethatthepromisesareintendedtosafeguard.Ifyou considerthatthepromisesare aninvasionofyourrights,the remedyisinyourownhands. IfweCatholics,assistingat HolyMass,frequentingthe Sacraments,donot,asanimmediateandessentialconsequence,manifestinourdaily livinganythingofthecharity, mercy,justiceandholinessof Christ,thenwearereducingour religion,inourlives,tomere externalshow.
Ifweareonlyexternally Catholics,webringuponthe Faiththestigmaofsuperstition andtheopprobriumofmagic. Howcanwehavetheimpudencetosaywearedoinganythingbutthat,if,apparently,we identifyCatholicismwithpinningabadgeuponourselvesand keepingitpolished?

VATICANCITY,June24 (Radio,NC.)-Twomiracles throughwhichGodmanifested thepresenceinHeavenofSaint MariaGorettiwerewrought withinafewdaysfollowingher beatificationonApril27,1947.
Thiswasmadeknownina decreeoftheSacredCongregationofRitespublishedtoday- thedayofthenewlittleSaint's canonization.
Inthefirstmiracle,Joseph Cupa,alabourer,wascuredon May8,1947,whenabigrock fellonhisfoot,crushingitand causinghaematoma,aswelling containingblood.Sufferingexcruciatingpains,heinvokedthe intercessionofBlessedMaria, who,heassertsaccordingtothe decree,appearedtohimand thepainsceasedthesame moment.Ahalfhourlaterhe stoodup,foundhisfootcured andreturnedtoworkthenext morning.
Thesecondmiracleconcerns AnnaGrossiMusumarra,whoat theendofApril,1947,suffered apaihfulattackofpleurisy, whichrapidlygrewworseuntil May4,whensheinvokedthe aidofBlessedMaria.Thenext daythefeverdisappearednever toreturn,andthedoctor, unawareofherinvocation,expressedcompletesurpriseover themiracle.
Bothmiraculouscureswere confirmedbythemedicalboard oftheSacredCongregationof Rites.

TheAustralians,owingtothe longerdistancetheyhavetravelled,havebeenaffordedmuch longertimeintheEternalCity thanmostgroups,whosestayis limitedtofivedays,butevena fortnightisfartooshortaspace inwhichtoview,muchless investigatethetreasureseverywhereathand.Thepilgrimsleave withasinkingfeelingatthe thoughtofthemanyplacesnot visitedandwhichcannotpossiblybecrowdedintothelast fewdaysinRome.
Yesterday,fourbusloadsof pilgrimssetoutforAssisi,the choiceofanumberofhallowed placesdistantfromtheCityitself.Timeallowedbutonesuch excursion,andothergreat shrineshadsimplytobepassed over.Buttheexperiencejustifiedthechoice.Inthesplendid Romanbuses,airy,spacious, welllighted,withamaximum windowspace,andfurnished withseparateupholsteredseats foreachpassenger,anearly startwasmadeat7a.m.PilgrimsfromthisPalazzowere thoughfullygivenaluncheon bageachbythemanagement andtheluggagerackswere stackedwiththeseandanarray ofcamerasofeverysizeand shape.
LeavingRomebytheprincipalnortherngate,thehistoric PiazzaleFlaminioandentering upontheancientFlaminian Way,builtbyGaiusFlaminius Nepos,Censorin220B.C.,the TiberwascrossedbythefamousMilvianBridge,whichstill containspartofthestructure builtin109B.C.Here,asChristianshavecausetoremember, wasfoughtthegreatbattle,A. Romandriversareamazingly expert,withanuncannygiftof decision,andtheydriveata speedthatleavesAustralians gasping.Itwasnotlong,therefore,beforethefoothillsofthe Appennineswerereached, throughacountrysidedotted withancientruinsandmade picturesquebythemoreorless derelictremainsofbattlemented castles,usuallyperchedonsome precipitoushill.Thehillcountry quicklybecamemoregrandand thebuseswoundroundsteep ,grades,stillatafuriouspace, thedriversoundingincessant blaststowarnallcomersofhis advent.Thepiercingsoundof thisinstrument,toopeculiarto becalledbysomildawordas ahorn,becameanacceptedaccompanimenttothepilgrims progress.
Thehillswerewell-wooded andgreen,andsoonwereseen increasinglybeautifulglimpsesoffertilevalleys,intensely cultivated,smilingandprosperousinthebrilliantItalian sunshine.Fromthehighridges, asthemountainchainwas ascended,thevastexpanseof thesevalleyspresentedaglorioussight,withinnumerable farmsnestlingamongthegarneredcrops,dark-greentrees, andlightergreenvines,and everywherethenowfamiliar sightofItalianhaystacks,small, ofaninvertedUshape,built roundalongpole,whitisticks outatthetop.

Thereitlayatrestforsixcenturiestillin1818PopePius VIIpermittedexcavationtobe maderoundthesepulchreso thatitcouldbeexposedfor veneration.Thus,inthecrypt, St,Francis'stombisnowvisible.Itisasolid,stonecoffin, protectedbystrongironbands. Beforeitburnvotivelights andbeforeitknelttheAustraliapilgrimswhowerefortunateenoughtohavetheprivilegeofvisitingtheshrine.A FranciscanFather,fromthe UnitedStates,whoguidedthe pilgrimsroundtheBasilica, recitedwiththemprayersto St.Francisforpeaceforthe world.
Thefirstthingseenwasa longlineofrepositorystalls, ladenwithpiousobjects,principallyofFranciscanassociation, arrangedalongsidethehuge whitebasilica,gleamingfiercely inthehotmiddaysun.Pilgrimsstoodoffsomedistanceto viewthelargestatueofOur Lady,whichcrownsthefacade, andwerethenhurriedintothe churchtohearanexplanation ofitssignificanceandtreasures. Thegreatchurchisbuiltover andaroundthelittle,ancient churchofthePortiuncula,which wasgiventoSt.Francis,and pilgrimscrowdedintorecite theprayersandgainthePortiuncplaIndulgence.Thestones ofthistinychurchareblack withageandtheoncebright muralscanonlybedimlydiscerned,butthesacredatmosphereofthevenerablebuilding istangible.Onewouldhave lovedtolingerherebuttime waspressingandnearbywas thesmallroomwhereSt. Francisdied.This,too,wasvisitedinaspiritofdeepveneration,buthere,also,timecould notbespent.
Inanadjoiningcloisterwas seenthestatueofSt.Francis, thefaceofwhichwasmadeaccordingtohisdeathmask.The handsareoutstretchedandon themisplacedabunchofroses. Amongtherosessatawhite dove,whichdidnotdisplayany fearofthevisitors.Thereis alwaysadovethere,itwas explained.Assoonasoneleaves thissacrednest,anotherimmediatelytakesitsplace. Throughanironlatticeofthe sun-speckledcloistercouldbe seeninaminiaturegardenthe statueofSt.Francisandthe Wolfandnexttothisgarden another,whereSt.Francis threwhimselfamongtherose thorns.Sincethen,itissaid,no thornshavebeenseenonthese rosebushesandcertainlythere werenothornsonthemwhen seenbytheAustralianpilgrims. Aclose-nettedgrilleprevents anypickingofleavesorsprigs, aprecautionwhichhasnodoubt beenfoundnecessarytopreservethebushesforinspection. AdoorwayleadsintoawellstockedrepositoryoftheFranciscans,wherepilgrimspurchasedreligioussouvenirsaccordingtotheirfancy.
Onboardthebusesagain,the wayleadtowardstheoldbuildingswhichwereseenhighupon thehillside.Astiffclimb,presentingabetterandbetterview ofthesurroundingUmbrian countryside,broughtthepilgrimsatlasttothequaint mediaevalvillageofAssisi,an old-worldhavenremotealtogetherfromanythinghitherto known.Narrow,windingstreets, spannedbyinvitingarches,and brokenbysteeprampsand steps,whichhavebeenuntouchedforlongcenturies,slept inthedrowsyheat.Beforeany investigationcouldbemade,pilgrimswereusheredalongoneof theseancientalleystoarestaurantwhichwasenteredfroma smallpiazzaoverlookingthe valleysfar,farbelow.An amplelunchwasserved,with large,widemoutheddecantersof Italianwine,andafterwards thosewhowereanxiousto explorewalkeddownthrough thefascinatingstreetstoalower levelofthevillage,wherethey sawthechurchofSt.Rufinus, oneofSt.Francis'scompanions, anddownagaintoanotherlevel, wheretheysawthechurchof St.Clare.
Onthewallsofthechurch above,amongthepriceless stainedglasswindows,another privilegeaffordedwasthesight oftheactualmasterpiecesof earlyItalianart,thepaintings ofCimabue,Giotto,Lorenzetti, SimoneMartini,andothers. Hereweretheoriginalsofthe Giottopicturesrecentlyfeatured byreproductionintheU.S.magazine,Life,Herewasseenthe celebratedGiottibluewhich aftersevencenturiesisstillas blueasever.Herewasafeast ofartthatdemandeddaysof quietcontemplation,but,again, timewasexactingandpilgrims hadtohurryon.Beforeleaving, however,avisitwasmadeto thesacristy.Herewereseenthe preciousrelicsofSt.Francis,all ofthemmentionedintheinventorymadein1338.Amongthe relics,whicharecontainedin ahugeglassfacedcase,behind strongdoors,arethetattered, much-patchedgreyhabitofSt. Francis,minusonearmand otherpartswhichhavebeen removedforrelics,thewhite tunicwhichheworeinhislast illness,theRuleofSt.Francis, onitsoriginalparchmentand certifiedbytheleadensealof PopeHonoriousIII(1223),the BlessingofSt.Francis,portion ofhiscord,hisslippersor ,andals,andtheclothsorhandkerchiefswithwhichheused tostaunchthebloodfromthe woundsofthestigmata.

Inthisgreat,stonebasilica, dimandcoolandtranquilinits 13thcenturyair,thecoming againintothehotglareofthe dayoutsidewasasevere contrast.Pilgrimsstoodonthe stepsandlookedoutoverthe surroundingcountry,where roadslookedlikepencilmarks uponapatternedcloth.Camera usersfoundthatafilmofeven justabovemoderatespeedwas toofastforthisfiercelight.An icecreamseller,withhisquaint cart,appearedfromsomewhere anddidaprofitabletrade.But nowitwasafter5o'clock,and itwashightimetothinkabout returning.Withgreatreluctance pilgrimstookleaveoflovely Assisi,mindful,too,thatthe povertyseeninitssurroundingsmaderealtheLadyPoverty ofwhichSt.Francisspoke.
Theweatherisstillhot,apart fromoneevening'srainand thePiazzaofSt.Petersboilsin thesun,makingtheevertossing fountainsaninvitingpicture. Nowthattheyarebeginingto knowRome,Australiapilgrims aresorrytobefacedwiththe necessityofleaving.Butnecessitydrivesandthefarewell mustbesaid.

Australianpilgrimshavejust hadtheprivilegeofwitnessing acanonisationceremony,the raisingtothealtarsofthe ChurchofSaintMariaGoretth Themagnificent spectacle, uniqueintheworld,cameasa climaxtoawonderfulfortnight spentinRome.
Itwastheprivilege,too,ofthe Australianpilgrimstowitnessa precedentincanonisationceremonies.Sogreatwasthedemandforticketsofadmissionto theBasilica-therewereover 160,000applicationsbeforethe Australianpilgrimsarrivedthatitwasdecidedtoholdthe firstpartoftheceremoniesin thePiazzaofSt.Peter's,sothat everybodycouldwitnessthem. Thus,thegreatprocession,the ActofCanonisation,thePetitions,thePrayers,andtheProclamation,wereheldonSaturdayevening,at7p.m.,andthe PapalMass,whichconcludesthe ceremonies,washeldatSt. Peter'sthismorning.
Astheeveningcooledandthe freshItaliannightdescended, therunbacktoRomegave pilgrimsanothersightofthe lovelyhillandvalleysuntilat lasttheywereontheFlaminian Wayagain.Itwas10,30when theyreachedtheirvariouslodgingsinthecityandatthePalazzodeiCavalieridelSancto Sepolcrothosewhoresidethere foundtotheirgreatpNasure thatdinnerwasawaitingthem. Itwasalongandtiringday,but onethatpilgrimswillnever forget.
Meanwhile,pilgrimshave beenbusyattendingmany hurchesandmakingJubilee VisitstotheprincipalBasilicas. Romeisthrongedwithpeople ofmanylanguages.Uptothe timeoftheAustralians'arrival

Againstthemaindoorofthe Basilicatheraiseddais,withthe Papalthroneuponit,wasprominentagainstitsloftyredcurtainedbackground.Oneither sidestretchedgreencovered benchesfortheCardinals,Patriarchs,Archbishops,Bishops andotherprelatesanddignitaries.Downthesteps,fromthe throne,apassagewaspreserved throughthePiazzatothebarrier,oneithersideofthepassageweregroupsofticketholders.Atthelowerbarrier, againstwhichthemassedthousandspressed,thepassageturnedatrightanglesandledtothe right-handcolonnade,from whichtheprocessionenteredthe Piazzaatafewminutesto7.
AswiththePublicAudience intheBasilica,thecrowdwas singingtheLourdeshymntoOur Ladyandliftingtheskieswith exultant-Ayes"whentheprocessioncameintoview.Only thosewhohavehearditcan haveanyrealisationhowthese "Ayes"lifttheskieswhensung byhalfamillionpeopleaspeoplesinghere.Astheheadof theprocessionwasseen,there washeardonthe.othersideof thePiazza,fromthegatewhere thecarsofdiplomatsandothers entertheVatican,therhythmic soundofdrums,presentlyaccompaniedbybrass,andsteppingbriskly,cameabandof over50pieces,playingarousing march.
Followingthebandcamethe PalatineGuard,hundredsof them.Theseformedabodyguardalongthewayoftheprocessionandaddedvarietytothe costumesoftheSwissGuard, NobleGuardandPapalGendarmeswhostoodondutyatmany points.Astheprocessionwound itswaytowardsthestepsof theBasilica,thedensemassof peoplewhichfilledthePiazza andstretchedbeyondalongthe ViadellaConciliazionetowards theTiberwasaninspiringsight. OntheroofsoftheVatican buildings,onthetopofthecolonnades,onalladjoiningstructuresandonthetopofthe neighbouringPropagandaCollege,thousandsmorewere gathered.Thecolourfulprocession,gloriousintheCardinals'redandrobesofother dignitariesstretchedfromthe daistothecolonnades,whenthe silvertrumpetsheraldedtheappearanceofthePope.
TheHolyFatherwascarried onthesediagestatoria,andat thesightofhimthecrowdbroke intogreatcheeringandwaved handkerchiefs,hats,papersand hands.Blessingthepeopleon eitherside,PopePiusmoved slowlyalongtherouteofthe processionandwasliftedsteadilyupthesteepstepsleadingto thestepsbeforethedais.Here hewasloweredtotheground andwalkeduptothethrone.
Theceremonywasreally brief,orseemedso.AtthePapal Thronetherewastheactof "obedience,"bywhichtheCardinalsapproachedandkissedthe Pope'shand,thePatriarchs,

AfterwardsthePostulants thankedtheHolyFatherinthe nameoftheCardinalProcurator andbeggedhimtoorderthe publicationoftheApostolicLettersrelatingtotheCanonization.TheProtonotariesApostolic wereaskedtodrawupthe ActoftheCanonizationandthe ceremonyendedwiththePope intoningtheTeDeumand impartinghisApostolicBlessingtothehalfamillionpeople assembled.
ButbeforetheBlessinghis Holinessspoketothepeople. Standingupright,amajestic figure,attheThrone,PopePius deliveredasix-minuteoration whichthoughitwasinItalian andmostlyunintelligibletothe Australianpilgrims,was,nevertheless,anexampleoforatory thatcannotbeforgotten.Using bothhandsinfree,sweeping andeasygestures,andwith hisvoicecomingresonantly throughtheBasilica'sexcellentamplifyingsystem,the HolyFathergrippedhisvast audiencebytheveryfervour andspontaneousarrestingattitudesofhisaddress.Speaking eloquentlywithhishands,and withhisarmupraisedfrequentlyindramaticcommandor appeal,hewasfascinatingto watch.Itwasreadilyapparent thatherewasoneofthebest oratorsofourtime.
Byalovingdispositionof DivineProvidence,saidtheHoly Father,thehighhonourpaidto thishumbledaughterofthe people,onsuchaluminous night,wasasolemnitywithout equal,inaformuniqueinthe annalsoftheChurch.Thegreat gatheringshowedthatina worldapparentlygivenoverto impurity,therewasanimmense multitudeforwhomthesupernaturalfragranceofapure Christianlifeexercisedanirresistableattraction.HisHoliness appealedtotheyoungboysand girlspresenttoberesolutein resistingtemptationandto fathersandmothersthatthey wouldfollowtheexampleofthe motherofSaintMariaGoretti, presentamongthem,inthe educatingoftheirchildren.
AftertheApostolicBlessing, hisHolinessstoodacknowledgingthecheersofthemultitude, andenteredtheBasilica.The bellsofSt.Peter'sbegantoring joyfullyasthecrowdstreamed fromthefloodlitPiazzaintothe adjacentstreets.Itwasjustafter 8p.m.Tablesonthefootpaths andthemanyrestaurantsalong theViadellaConciliazionewere quicklyoccupied,andthebroad thoroughfarewasgivenagala appearance.Buildingswere lightedwithcandlesandelectric globesanduntilalatehour peoplestillwalkedbackwards andforwardsintheirhundreds, rejoicinginthenewandpopular Saint.
ThismorningwasthePapal MassofCanonization.Here, again,theamazingcrowdscenes werere-enacted.TheMasswas
at10,butathalf-past6people werehurryingalongtheVia dellaConciliazionetowardsSt. Peter's.TheAustralianpilgrims hadticketsadmittingthemto theBasilica,butevensothey wereadvisedtoarriveearly.
ProvidedbytheCentralCommitteeoftheHolyYearoffice withapress,Iwenttothe Basilicashortlybefore8,30.The word"stampa"-press---entitled metogo"anywhere,"except intotheplacereservedforthe ceremoniesthemselves.Taking upapositionnearthegreat Baldacchino,whereIcouldsee boththehighaltarandthespace betweenitandthePapalThrone intheChapeloftheChair,in theapse,Iwasabletosee everythingexcellently,Beside meweretheSwissGuards, strechedoutinalinearound theenclosure.Quiteclose,therefore,passedthesplendidprocessionandtheHolyFatheron hewayroundthealtar.Quite closewerethespectacularce- remoniesoftheMass.TheBasilicaiswelllighted,evenwith naturaldaylight,butwhenthe Popeentersinprocession,a myriadlightsareturnedon andthevastbuildingisilluminatedlikefairyland,thecolours oftheastonishingmosaicsmakingabrilliantbackgroundtothe gleaminglights.Againstthis theredandwhiteandgoldof theecclesiasticalvestments,the redandblueandyellowofthe SwissGuards,andthedecorativeuniformsofthePapalGendarmes,PalatineGuards,and thevariousPapalOrdersmake aglitteringdisplay.
TheMass,initsessentials,is familiar,ofcourse,toCatholics theworldover.Butnowhere intheworldcantherebeseen suchpageantryaswasseenthis morningastheprocessionmovedthroughtheBasilicaandas theceremonieswereperformed. ButtheMassofCanonisation hassomeveryunusualfeatures. Apartfromthegorgeouscolours ofthevestmentswornbythose participating,fromthePopeand Cardinalsdown,andtheinterestingfunctionsoftime-honouredecclesiasticalofficialsattendantupontheHolyFather,there wereceremoniesnotseenin one'snativeland.
Therewasthepreparationof thewineandhostsatthePapal credencetable,whenthePapal Cup-bearertastedthewineto showthatitwasfreefrompoisonousingredients;therewas thesingingbytheGreekdeaconoftheEpistleandGospel inGreek,aftertheLatinsinging.TheGreekchantisbeautifullyfluidandmelodious;then therewasthespecialceremony attheOffertory,whenaprocessiontooktothePopeanofferingofdecoratedcandles,bread, wine,water,twoturtledoves, twopigeons,andseveralsmall birds.Thiswas,ofcourse,a relicofthetimeswhensuchofferingswerebroughtbythe faithfulfortheEucharisticSacrifice,butthepigeons,doves, andotherbirdssymbolisedthe purityandcelestialnatureof theSacrifice.Thecandles,two weighing601bs.each,were stampedwiththepictureofthe newsaint;theloaves,oneinsilverandoneingold,hadthe Papalarmsontheminrelief; thewineandwaterwereingold andsilverbarrels;andthebirds wereinhandsomecagesofgold andsilver.
AttheElevationoftheHost andChalice,theuniformed guardsdrawtheirswordsand godownononeknee,thetrumpetsplayaslowair,andthe Pope,holdinguptheHostand Chalice,inturn,facesaboutin acompletecircle,firsttothis sideandthentothat,sothat everyonemaysee.
Finally,theHolyFatheris carriedinthesediagestatoria fromtheBasilica.Asinthe publicaudiences,hestopped neartheentrancedoorandturnedtoblessthepeopleagain.All thistimetheBasilicaresounded withdeafeningcheersand shoutsof"VivaitPapa."As thecrowdflockedoutintothe Piazza,theBasilicaclockstruck half-pasttwelve.
OutsidethePiazzanewsboys soldillustratedbookletsofMaria Gorettiandagainthethousands ofpeopleenlivenedthestreets. Groups,especiallyofchildren, wendedtheirwayalongsinging livelyItalianhymns,leavingin themindsofAustralianpilgrims avividlastimpressionofthe EternalCity.

TheparishpriestwasFather PatrickLynch,theSolemnMass wascelebratedbyDeanBrennanandtheoccasionalsermon attheafternoonceremonywas preachedbyMonsignorVerling, V.G.
Someofyouwillremember wellthatoccasionandthose principalfigures;Othersofyou willretainbutavaguememory ofthem;manyofyoubelongto anothergeneration;whichhas grownupwiththeChurchand forwhichthishasbeenalways theparishChurchofMaylands.
Andnow,thismorning,after twenty-fiveyears,weareassembled,inthepresenceofHis Grace,thepresentArchbishop, tocelebratetheSilverJubilee oftheDedicationofthisChurch; tothankGodforallthegraces andblessingswhichhavebeen dispensedwithinitduringthese longyears,toprayfortheSouls ofthedeceasedpriestsand parishionersofthisparishandto askGod'sblessingontheparish, nowandforfutureyears.

Menhavestoodinwondermentandawebeforetheglory andsplendourofthegreatCathedrals,thebeautifulchurches, inspiredbyFaithandraisedto thegloryofGodthroughoutthe centuriesespeciallyinthe countriesoftheOldWorld. Thesemenwhetherofthe house-holdofthefaithornot, haveseenintheseChurchesa symbolofprayer,especiallythe GothicChurcheswiththeirspires likearmsstretchingoutto Heaven-andasymbolofthe BodyofChristCrucified:the naveHisBody,thetranseptsHis outstretchedarms,thealtarHis head.
Butwhatevermaybethe valueandbeautyofthesesymbols,thereisarealityoffar greatervalueandoffargreater beauty:ourChurchisGod's house,God'shouseofprayerand achurchisthesanctuaryof Christ'sBodyandBloodinthe mostholyEucharist.

Thematerialchurch,there fore,isafigureoftheliving Church,thecommunityofthe faithful.AndasinearlyNew Testamentdaystheyspokeof theChurchofCorinthorthe ChurchofEphesus,soto-day wemayspeakoftheChurchof Maylands,aChristiancommunity,theUniversalChurchin miniature.
The"chosenandlivingstones" arereplacedastimepasses;the Churchremains,notonlythe materialstructure,butthe Christiancommunity,theparish,withitstraditions,itsworship,itsholywork,itslifein God.
To-daywestandatthispoint inthelifeofthisparish,looking backtothepast,lookingtowardsthefuture.Wegive thankstoGodforallthathas beendonetoHishonourand gloryinthisChurchduring twenty-fiveyears,fortheMasses,theSacraments,theprayers, thecountlessgracesandblessings.
