"That,"saysMgr.Knox,"isa goodillustrationofwhatwe meanbytheCommunionof Saints.TheChurchisdivided intothreelargebits;partofit isinheaven,partofitisinPurgatory.TheChurchinHeaven isAllSaints.TheChurchin Purgatoryisallsouls.the Churchonearthisallsorts.We, onearth,arepoorerthanthe saintsinheaven,soweaskthem togiveussomething.Butwe, onearth,arericherthanthe soulsinPurgatory,sotheyask ustogivethemsomething.It's thesameoldprincipleSt.Paul usedtopreach,ofgiveandtake betweenChristiansallround.

Christ'sPassionandDeathareamystery ofloveratherthanofjustice.Thewhole implicationofChrist'sseeminglyexcessive sufferingsduringHisPassionisthatGod's lovewasmoredifficulttosatisfythanHis justice
WhenSt.PauloftheCross wasaverysmallboy,hewas onedaypuzzledandawedbya big,almostlifesizecrucifixstill tobeseeninthehouseat Ovada,sohewenttohismother toseekanexplanationand askedher:"Mama,whatdoesit mean?"

Whatdoesitmean?
IsthePassionessentiallya mysteryofjusticeoramystery oflove?Itishardtobelieve thataneventofsuchharrowinganddisgustingbarbarityas theCrucifixionwasinanyway necessary.Andyetitmusthave been.OnetearshedatBethlehemwassufficienttoredeem theworld,becausetheDivine PersonofOurSaviourgave everyactofHisaninfinite value.Andyet,iftheshedding ofonetearwasamplysufficient toredeemtheworld,andevena thousandworlds,itishardto understandwhytheFather shouldhaveexactedsucha mercilessandapparentlyexorb-itantretributionfromHisown Son.Ifitisadmittedthatthe Fatherwasimpelledtomake theseexactionsbytheintransigenceofHisjustice,weare givenaharshandterrifying pictureofHim.

InRussia,forinstance,average housingspaceistheequivalent of20personslivingina4or 5roomAustralianhouse.This shouldbecomparedagainstthe resultsofthe1947Census, whichshowedthat,inN.S.W. therewere600,000housesoccupiedbyonefamily-theav-
