"Whyhavethese14,000missionariesremainedinChina? Thereisatemptationtoanswer thisquestionbydenyingallthe false aboutchargeswhicharemade thesemissionaries.I preferherejusttoaffirmpositively, insimpleandplainlanguage, theprincipalreasonswhy ourmissionariesremainedat theirposts.
"Theydidso,first,because oftheirsincerefriendshipfor theChinesepeople.Themissionarycanneverbeamerely foreignmissionary.Heisnotan ordinaryforeigner,butheisone whogivesuphisnativeland andhomeandadoptstheland andlivelihoodofthepeopleto whomheministers.Heismore interestedintheuniversality andunityofthehumanfamily thanineventhelegitimatenationalbarrierswhichexist amongstmen.Themissionary dedicateshislifetothefatherhoodofGodandthebrotherhoodofman.
"Iknowofnootherclassof peoplewhoaresopractically andsototallydedicatedtothis ideal.Themissionarybecomes apartofthelandofhisadopt- ionandheisboundbytheties ofsincerefriendshipwiththe peopleofthatland.Heconsiders thatpeoplehisownflock. On thebasisofthissincerefriendship, themissionarywillnotdeserthispeopleintimeof trouble.Ourmissionariesremainedwiththeirpeoplebecause theyarefriendsofthosepeople. Thefactthattheyremainedis proofofthesincerityoftheir friendship.
"Thesecondreasonwhyour Catholicmissionariesremained isthatthisisapartoftheage- oldCatholictradition.The Churchtakesthespirituallife ofmanveryseriously.From centurytocentury,inpeace andinwar,.shehasaffirmed theprimaryimportanceofthe spiritualmanasagainsttheanimalman,theeconomicman orthepoliticalman.Inthe Catholictraditionthesoulof manisofsupremeimportance. "Thethirdreasonmightbe attributedtothedisciplineand organizationoftheCatholic Church.TheChurchhasno policeforce,noarmies,no bombsofanykind.Butthe Churchdoescommandfree obedienceandtheChurchdoes havearecognizedleader.We arewitnessinginChinatodaya magnificentexampleofhow thissereneandfruitfuldisciplineandorganizationcarrieson intimeofcrisis,inobedience, inpatiencb,inhope."
