AttackingCatholicswhosmuglysaidthatweweredoingvery wellwithStateaid,andthat
moreStateaidwouldmeanState powerstoputanendtoCatholicschoolsaltogetheriftheState wished,MonsignorGoodyconcludedthatsuchCatholicshad noconceptionofthelonghours nunsspentinteachingandin givingmusiclessonstoenable themtosupplementthemeagre schoolfeeswhichtheyreceived from,notall,butonlysomeof thechildren,sometimes.Whether ourschoolsreceivedStateaidor not,itwouldmakenodifferencetotheirprospectsofsurvivalunderahostileGovernment.Unitedandorganised CatholicActionwastheonly safeguardorhopeofevenpartialjusticeforourschools.

ItwasAutumn1940,andnear midnightwhenthemailboat berthed.atHolyhead.There wasdarknesseverywhere.Even thepilotlightswerejusttiny stars;thecaptainneededgood sighttosteersafely.Butwhen morningcameandthesunshone brightly,onecouldalmostforgettheblack-out.Thepeople sangbravely,"Whenthelights shineagain,"andtheirsong soundedlikeaprayer.
Ithought,asIlistened,Hitler'sblack-outisthorough,but whatisitcomparedwiththe black-outimposedonthespirituallifeofEnglandbythe "Reformers,"andhowfewsing, "Whenthespirituallightshall shineagain."
Yettherearesignsthatthe spirituallightmayshineagain, too,andmaybesoonerthanwe expect.Oneofthesesignsis DevotiontotheSacredHeart.
Twomonthslater,walking alongthenarrowstreetsof Leeds,Icamefacetofacewith ayoungCatholicmotherwheelingherbaby.Wespokefora moment,andInoticedasmall clothbadgeoftheSacredHeart pinnedupirtidethepram. "Yes,"shesaid,whenshesaw melookingatit,"sinceFred wascalledupIhaveturned verymuchtotheSacredHeart. Heisouronlyhopetobring Fredhomesafely."
DuringtheyearsthatfollowedwhilegivingMissionsand Retreatsupanddownthecountry,Icouldnothelpseeingthat arealsoliddevotiontotheMost SacredHeartofJesusisgrow-
ingsteadilyamongtheEnglish Catholics,anditisaverygood signofthefuture.Cardinal Wisemanmayhavebeenabetterprophetthanmanypeople thoughtwhenhesaid,"Ibelieve Englandwillcomebacktothe FaiththroughtheSacred Heart."
Manyfactorscontributetothe fosteringofthisgranddevotion; neverforgetting,ofcourse,that theSacredHeartItselfwillfor everdrawsoulscloserwiththe goldencordsofloveandmercy. Theworkofthepriestsmust takefirstplace,for,unlessthe priestsetsaheadlineandgives enouragement,nothingwillbe done.Thezealouspriestfinds plentyofinspirationinthe manyPapalannouncementson thisdevotion,whileHisGrace, ArchbishopGodfrey,Apostolic Delegate,hastimeandagain spokenondevotiontotheSacredHeart.In1944hesaid:I "Thevenerationoftheimageof theSacredHeartintheisome helpsthefamilytoremAnber OurLord'sKingship,andHis deepPersonalLoveforall,who dwellinthehouse.Itreminds usallthatwelivein,with,and forOurLord,Whoopenstoall whoseekHimtheTreasuresof HisSacredHeart."

Somethingunique,Ithink,in CatholicActionistheApostolateofSt.MargaretMary.This consistsentirelyoflaypeople, realapostles,ifevertherewas one.TheobjectoftheApostolateistobrngdevotiontothe SacredHeart,asrevealedtoSt. MargaretMary,intothelivesof EnglishCatholics.Thisisdone chieflytht'oughtheconsecration ofhomestotheSacredHeart. Theyarguethatifthisdevotion isinhomelifeitwillsoonbe inthestreetandfactory,and theyquotePopePiusVII.:"To savetheCatholicfamilyisthe chieftaskofeveryCatholic man."
TheSecretarywritesfromthe LondonH.Q.toaParishPriest forpermissiontohavesermons preachedinhischurch.When thisisobtainedaconvenient dateischosenandapriest, usuallyfromoneoftheMisison Houses,issenttopreachthe sermons.Heiswellinformed bytheApostolateontheprocedure.Ihadthehappinessof preachingfortheApostolateall overGreatBritain.
Idistinctlyrememberthefirst sermon.Itwasasmallcotton towninNorthLancashire.I preachedatthetwoMassesand attheeveningDevotions. I toldthepeopleofthepromises oftheSacredHeartandthe blessingsthatwouldfollowon theconsecrationoftheirhomes. AttheendItoldthemthatthose whowishedtohavetheirhomes consecratedshouldgivetheir namesatthechurchdooron theirwayout.Twoyoung ladiesweretoldofftotaketheir names.Ididnotfeelatall happyduringtheday,forI fearedthatthepeoplemightnot beinterested.HoweverImade noenquiryduringtheday,puttingoffbadnewsaslongasI could.Atsupperthatnightthe AssistantPriestcametomy help."Father,"hesaid,"I hopeyouaresatisfiedwithyour day.Uptothepresentseventytwofamilieshavesentintheir names."
TheApostolatehasbeenthe meansofconsecratingthousands offamiliestotheHeartof Jesus,and,quiteoften,ofsupplyingapicturefreeofcharge topoorfamilies.Atthesame timethereisaninnercircleof prayerintheApostolateof abouttwothousandmembers, includingmanypriestsandnuns. Thesearenotifiedinadvance whensermonsareabouttobe preachedandtheyprayforsuccess;theypray,too,forallthe familiesconsecratedthroughthe workoftheApostolate.

ThesearesomeoftheagenciestheSacredHeartisusing tokindlethefireofHisLovein England.Thereishardlya CatholichomeinEnglandwithoutsomereminderoftheSacred Heart,eventhoughitbeonly theshieldoftheSacredHeart pinnedupbehindthedoor.Betweenthetwowarshawkers importedsomelovelypictures oftheSacredHeartandOur Lady.Theframingandmountingwasperfect.Theycarried themfromdoortodoor,and thousandsofCatholicfamilies boughtthem.Nowtheyproudlysay:"Whatdoyouthinkof ourholypictures,Father. Nothinglikethatnowadays."
OnefamilyinsistedthatIgoupstairstoseetheir"altar."It wasanexquisitelittleoratory, atablewithawhitecloth,a largestatueoftheSacredHeart inthecentresurroundedwith flowersandcandles.Twoof thesecandlesarelightedfor nightprayers,Iwastold.
ANOVENA.
SometimeagoIwenttogive aMissioninasmallruralparish atthefootofYorkshireMoors. ItwasthemonthofJune,with glorioussummerweather.All aroundinthisbeautifulvalley thepeoplewerebusyatthehay. Thescentofthenewmownhay filledandfreshenedthechurch everyday,andsometimeswe couldhearthemowingmachines atworkwhilewesaidtheRosary.Everythingstartedoff verywell,butIwasafraidthat beforetheendoftwoweeksthe firstfervourwouldhavecooled. Becauseittakesabitofexplaining,itisperhapsaswell tosetitdown.
First,.the.£50,000,000.or £60,000,000tobefoundhasnot gottobeproducedinstantlyand paiddownonthenail.Itisan estimateofthetotalpaymentsin interestandindebtrepayment whichtheCatholicsofEngland willhavetofindduringthenext fiftyyearsforschoolswhichthey willbuildduringthenextten years.Inotherwords,itis £1,000,000ayearorsoforthe nextfiftyyears.
Secondly,£50,000,000isan outsideestimateofcostbasedon peakpost-warcostsofschool building.Thereisconsiderable likelihoodthatwhenthingshave settleddownsomewhereabout £35,000,000willbeatruerfigure.Thissumspreadover50 yearsis£700,000perannum. ONESHILLINGAWEEK.
WhenallchildreninEngland hadtopayfortheirschooling, thatis,backintheoldBoard SchoolandChurchSchooldays, roundabout1870,childrenwere charged3d.perweekfortheir schooling,andanybrothersor sistersofafirstchildwerelet offat2d.Amanwasdoing verywellindeedinthosedays tobegettinghis20s.aweekfor manuallabour,skilledorunskilled.Threepenceisoneeightiethof20s.
To-dayanaveragewage .wouldbe£8perweek,andif wepaidls.aweekperchild thatwouldbeoneonehundred andsixtiethofsuchawage.No Is.aweekisnotagreathardship,providedthattherearenot manychildrentobeeducated andprovidedthatisallthatit costs.It,ofcourse,costsan Australianparentmuchmore thanls.perweekperchild,and weoftenruntofourchildren andmoreatatimeatschool. Therearebusfaresandlunches ontopofthat.
InEnglandchildren'sfares arepaidafterthefirsttwomiles andtheygetfreelunchandfree milkprovidedforthem.The lunchismeat,vegetables,and pudding,probablywithsoup thrownin.Afullmeal,itwas originallychargedforat6dper day,andisscheduledtobefree whenamajorityofschoolshave canteensanddininghalls-both ofthelatterwillalsobeprovidedfreeandwithoutchargeto aCatholicschool.
TheEnglishGovernmenthas probablyworkedoutthearithmeticofthematterontheforegoinglinesanddecidedthatas wagesstandto-day,andin comparisonwithwhatisspent onamusements,drink,tobacco, motoringandpetrol,dressand cosmetics-incomparisonwith allthesemodernextravagances -is.perweekisnotmuch.
TheEnglishCatholicBishops, however,whoknowjusthow harditistogetmoney,probablythinkthatls.perweekfor everyCatholicchild,pluswhat isneededforthesupportand expansionoftheChurchandthe clergy,isanimpossibleamount toobtain.InEngland,asin Australia,thelastthingto benefitfromanupwardadjustmentofthebasicwageisthe Sundaycollection.
REASONFORINJUSTICE.
StillwhetherCatholicscanor cannotfindshillingsfortheir schools,theequityofthematteristhattheyshouldnothave to.ThereasonthataliberallymindedEnglishGovernmenthas imposedandmaintainssuch penaltiesonEnglishCatholic schoolsisthattheyimposethem onallChurchschools:onsome 10,000ChurchofEngland Schoolsaswellason1,200orso CatholicschoolsinEngland.
The10.000ChurchofEngland schoolsdonotserveamet's-
ingChurchofEnglandpopulation.Infacttheyareusually villageschoolsservingallgrades ofProtestantbeliefandofno beliefatall,becausetheyare theonlyschoolsinthevillage.
Thedesireis,therefore,toline theseupwiththeordinaryLocal EducationAuthority'sschools. Thisiseasyandacceptableon religiousgrounds,astheChurch ofEnglandisapartytothe AgreedSyllabusofProtestant religiousinstructiontobegiven inallbutCatholicschools.
Moreover,inliningupwith theLocalAuthorityschools,the schoolsstillpreserveaspecial statuscalled"ControlledStatus," withoutpayinganythingforit.
Thisfinancialpersuasionon ChurchofEnglandschoolstoaccept"ControlledStatus"suits (1),theLocalEducationAuthorities,whofinditcheaperto runandadminstertheschools whentheyareallofonekind.
(2)TheFreeChurches,who havealwaysbeeninfavourof undenominational,publicly-controlledschoolsandarevery muchopposedtotheChurchof Englandschools.(3)TheTeachers'Union,whohavealways objectedtoreligioustest*and declarationsofaFaithasabar toheadmastershipsinChurch schools;andwherethereare 10,000C.ofE.schoolsandabout 10,000Localundenominational schools,theproblemisavexed one.
Ontheothersidestandthe Catholics,whodonotbearpa- tientlythefinancialbrandwhich marksthemasthesheepapart fromthegoatsofthosewhowill notbepreparedtosacrificefor theirschools. Holdingthebalancebetween thetwopointsofviewisthe MinisterforEducationandParliament.In1944twodrastic alterationsweremadetothe draftoftheEducationBillto tipthebalancedownonthe sideofCatholics.Onewasasectionwhichsafeguardedtheir schoolsfromclosure.Theother gaveCatholicsalmosttheexclusiverighttoborrowmoney forchargesontheirschools fromtheGovernment.
Catholicshopedtodobetter thanthisatthelastelections. TheyundoubtedlymadeatremendousimpressiononParliamentarycandidates.Whenthe EducationestimatesweredebatedinMayinthenewParliament,boththeMinisterfor Education,ontheGovernment sideandtheformerConservativeMinisterforEducation underthewar-timeGovernment (R.A.Butler,whosteeredthe 1944ActthroughParliament),weresympathetictotheCatholicpositionandpromisedtodo allthatcouldbedonetoease theburdenonCatholicschools without"upsettingthenegotiatedbalanceofthe1944Act." Intheopendebatewhichensued,20speakersjoined.Eight
oftheseadvocatedthecauseof Churchschools,andnoneatall ',pokeagainstthem.Catholic representationoverthelastelectioninEnglandhadnotthen failed.Ithadexertedavery markedinfluenceandleftavery profoundimpressiononParliamentarians.
Catholicsmayhavetowaita considerabletimeforanything betterthanthis;theywillvery likelyhavetowaituntilthe ChurchofEnglandschoolshave mergedwithLocalAuthority schoolstomakethebestofthe good-deal-better-than-nothing AgreedSyllabus.Then,with aclearfieldinwhichthereare nootherstosharefavour,the Catholicschoolscouldreceive fullequityoftreatmentwithout losingtheirCatholicstatus.
Thatdesirableconditionmay bealongwayoff.Meanwhile, EnglishCatholicshavetalkeda greatdealofChristianityat Parliamentariansandothers, Somemaystick.Theyalsoreceiveabout95%ofthetotal costsofrunningtheirschools.

Noonewhorealisestheinfluenceofthewrittenwordupon theheartsandthoughtsofmenwillquestionthegoodworkthat Catholicnewspapersaccomplish.TheveryfacethattheChurch publishesanindexofprohibitedbooksshowsthatsheregards theinfluenceofthewrittenwordasextremelyimportant.And thefrequentdesireoftheChurch,thatgoodliteraturehhouldbe circulated,isevidencethatnoCatholicoughttobeindifferentto whathehimselfreadsorallowshischildrentoread.Wehave made,andaremaking,enormoussacrificestokeeptheevilbreath. ofsecularismfromourschools.Westraineverynervetosecure forourchildrenaneducationgroundedonreligion,butweoften seemtoforgetthat'whenchildrenleaveschooltheirfurthereducationisdependentchieflyuponwhattheyread.Inthisageof mentalactivityandintellectualcuriosity,itisessentialthatwholesomereadingmattershouldbeavailable,otherwisepeoplewill readbookswhosetendencyandpurposeisnotinfrequentlyevil.
Thereis,unfortunately,toomuchreasonforthinkingthat manyofourpeoplereadwhatIsethicallyfalse-theoutput ofwriterswhodonotaccepttheveryfundamentalsofCatholic FaithorofCatholicPhilosophy.Ifreadingisanindextocharacter,whatconclusionmustwereachregardingthementaloutlookofthosewhoseBibleisthedailynewspaper?Thereisno hesitationindenyingthesanctityofthemarriagebond,orthe sacredcharacterofhumanlife.Thereislesshesitationinpanderingtothepopulartastes,insketchesandarticlesofadecidedly indecentstandard,whereCatholicprinciplesandCatholicmodesty areconspicuousbytheirabsence.Worsestill,whetherconsciouslyorunconsciously,Catholicdoctrineisoftenmisunderstoodand misinterpreted,andsometimesevencalumniesagainstGod's Churcharerecklesslybroadcast.Andthepopularnovelwhich panderstomorbidpublictastemustveryoftenbeplacedinthe samecategory.Onecannotfailtoseehownearthedangeris fortheindiscriminatereader.
NowthisistheprecisedangerwhichasoundCatholicPress counteracts.Nomissionarypropagandaisinourdayssoeffective. Theprintedwordpenetrateswherethespokenwordcannotenter, andaddressesthousandswhomaynotbereachedinanyotherway. ThereisonlyoneeffectivewaytobreakthepowerandinfluenceofthesecularpressamongourCatholicpeople,andthat is-aCatholicpaperineveryCatholichome.Itisouronlybulwarkagainstthedelugeofpaganismandgodlessnessofour enlightenedage.TheHolyFatherhaseulogisedinburningwords thegloriousworkoftheCatholicPressintheworld.TheChurch owesitaneverlastingdebtofgratitude.ThereisnotaBishop orpriestanywherebuthaschampionedthecauseandgiventhe slogan:aCatholicpaperineveryCatholichome.
Butofwhatuseisaslogan,ifitbelostintheether?Tomake iteffective,theremustbeanorganisedcampaignineveryparish. ThereisnotafamilyinthecountrybutcanaffordtotakeaCatholicpapereveryweek.TomakeaCatholicpaperinevery homeaworkingreality-thepriestswillhavetoshovetheway. Thismaylooklikeaddingtotheburdenofanover-workedpriesthood,butsurelythegeniusoforganisationliesinthefactthat othersdotheworkwhichtheorganiserplans.InWesternAustraliathepriestshaveeverbeenloyalandfaithfultothecallof theCatholicpaper,andhaveunselfishlysuperviseditssaleattheir churchdoors.Ofthisunselfishkindness"TheRecord"isnotunmindful.But,comparingthenumberofsoldcopieswiththe populationofthedifferentparishes,itfeelsthatsomeadditional advocacyofthecauseisnecessary.ApartfromthebusinessinterestsofaCatholicpaper,priestswillhavetheconsolationof knowingthatinhelpingaCatholicPresstheyarefurtheringone ofthemosteffectivemethodsofCatholicAction.

Thetreeoflifemusthavehad someparticularlifegivingor lifepreservingquality.Itsobviouspurposewas,tosupplyan antidoteagainstthenaturaldeclineofthehumanbody,since GoddestinedAdamforimmortality.St.Augustinehasmany worth-whileremarksaboutthis particulartree.
Thetreeoflifewasundoubtedlyarealtree,asrealasthe gardeninthemiddleofwhichit stood.Thesamemustbesaid ofthetreeofknowledgeofgood andevil.Howdiditgetits name?Simplyfromtheroleit wasdestinedtoplay.Itsfruit wastobethelineofseparation betweengoodandevil.These twotermsdenotethingsofthe moralorder.Goodisthegood ofobedience;evilistheevilof disobedience.Man'sabstention fromthefruitofthisonetree meantobedienceandtheenjoymentofgoodinaworldwhere Godmadeallthingsgood.Evil couldonlyenterwiththecrossingoftheboundarysetto humanlibertybythatforbidden fruit.Theboundaryrespected wouldkeepmaninthesweet knowledgeofgood,theboundary crossedwouldgivemenbitter knowledgeofthegoodhehad lostandtheevilhebadfound.

Thedetailsofthisstorywere veryfamiliartothePalestinian Jews,towhomOurLordtoldit. InPalestine,asinotherEastern countries,thereisacertaintype of looks verylikethegrowingwheat. Whensomemaliciousperson wantedtotakevengeanceona farmer,hewouldplanttheseeds ofthisparticularweedamong thefarmer'snewlyplanted wheat.Itthenbegantogrow togetherwiththewheat.
Atfirstitwashardlydistinguishablefromthewheat,but asharvest-timeneareditbecameclearlydistinct.Ifthe farmertriedtorootifoutwhile itwasstillgrowingup,however, therewouldbemuchdangerfor tworeasons:First,therootsof theweedtendedtointertwine withtherootsofthewheat.Secondly,because,whilegrowing, theweedlookedsomuchlike wheatthat,ifyoutriedtoseparatetheweedsandpullthem out,youmighteasilypullout thegoodwheatinstead.

Spirallingpricesforfood, clothing,housingandothernecessities hardshiparecausingincreasing tolargesectionsofthe community.
Indicativeoftheimpactofinflationuponpublicconsciousness wastheemphasisplaceduponit intherecentelections.
TheLiberal-CountryParty Coalitionhaspledgedthatitwill "putvaluebackintothepound," whichisanotherwayofsaying thatitwillcurbinflation.But that,asweshallsee,iseasier saidthandone.Todate,the Governmenthasshownsmall evidencethatithasdevelopeda comprehensiveandworkable anti-inflationplan.Itis,of course,stilltooearlytobecritical,butelectorsareentitledto expectpromptandrealisticactioninhonourofanelection pledge.Inorderthatwemay judgeintelligentlythevalueof anymeasureswhichtheGovernmentmaydevise,wemustfirst understandwhatinflationis.We mustalsorealisethatnodemocraticGovernmentcandealeffectivelywiththisproblemunlessithastheactiveco-operationofallsectionsofthecommunity.
HARDHIT.
Hardesthitbyinflationare thoseonfixedmoneyincomespensioners,bondholders,the professionalclass,salary-earners,and,inparticular,theold whocannotworktosupplement theirincomeandthehome-
seekerswhocannotafforda home. Althoughthevastmajorityof pensioners,wageandsalary earnersarefeelingtheeffectsof inflation-andevidenceofthisis theincreasingnumbersofwives andmotherswhoaretaking full-timeorpart-timeemploy-ment-theburdenbearswith particularseverityuponthe home-seekers(whichinclude thathighly-importantsectionof thecommunity-youngmarried couples).
Itisvirtuallyimpossibletodaytorentahome;anditis rapidlybecomingimpossiblefor theaveragenewly-marriedcoupletobuildorbuyone. Thisisoneofthemanyhardshipsbroughtbyinflation.(It isone,incidentally,thatisnot reflectedintheCommonwealth Statistician'sCost-of-LivingIndexFiguresinwhichaverage rentisshownat25s.).Butitis nottheonlyone.Moreover,the endisnotyetinsight.Prices willgohigher;and,unlessdrasticactionistakentodealwith theproblem,hardshipswillincrease.
UPWARDS.
Since1936,retailpriceshave risenby62percent.,whilstthe currentlevelofwholesaleprices (97percent.abovepre-war) pointstofurtherincreases.Over thesameperiodthevolumeof moneyinthecommunityhas risenby190percent.
Whilstthebulkoftheincrease inthevolumeofmoneyoccurred between1939and1945(121.5 percent.),themostrapidrisein priceshastakenplacesincethe removalofCommonwealthprice controland,theterminationof
subsidiesin1948,althougha steepupwardtrendwasalready makingitselffeltin1947.
Itwould,however,beamistaketoassumethattheremoval ofCommonwealthpricecontrol wastherootcauseofinflation. Pricecontrolwasanadministrativemeasurewhichhadsucceededfairlywellinkeeping thealreadyexistinginflationary pressuresintheAustralianeconomyincheck. Toappreciatewhatthesewere wemustkeepinmindthatinflationisarelativetermusedto describeasituationinwhichthe volumeofmoneyinacommunityisincreasingmorerapidly thanthevolumeofgoodsand serviceswhichmoneybuys.
Thepresentinflationhasbeen broughtaboutbyanumberof factors,including:
THEWAR.
Duringthewartherewasa spectacularincreaseinthevolumeofmoneyunmatchedby theproductionofgoodsandserviceswhichtherecipientsof higherincomeswouldnormally wishtobuy.Bankdeposits,deferredpay,WarSavingsCertificatesandotherformsofsavings werecarriedoverintothepostwarperiodtocreateanenormousdemandinlimitedpostwarproductionandimports.
HIGHEXPORTPRICES.
Australia,inthepost-war yearshasexperiencedanunpar- alleledboominthepricesofher mainexports.Exportsin193839totalled£122millions.In 1948-49,£547millions.Exporters'incomeshaveincreased proportionately.Atthesame time,Britishinabilitytosupply, coupledwiththedollarshortages,hasrenderedimpossible anequivalentincreaseinimports.Thisisevidencedbythe growthinourinternationalreserves-from£56millionsin 1938-39to£452millionsin l$48-49-whichhavegrownbecauseoftheannualgapbetween exports mentedandimports,supplebytheinflowofcapital fromabroad.
CAPITALEXPANSION.
Thewar-timedevelopmentof Australianindustrieswasonly thepreludetoevenbiggerdevelopmentsinthepost-warera. Overthepastfouryears(duringwhichlocalandoverseasindustrialistshavespent200millionsincapitalexpansion)we haveseensuchindustriesas rayonweavingestablished,aircraftmanufactureextended,and bigdevelopmentsinmotorvehicles,tractors,earth-moving equipment,machinetools,and chemicals.Capitalexpansion isanecessaryconcomitantofa large-scaleimmigrationprogramme-ifthemigrantsareto beabsorbedwithoutalowering oflivingstandards-butitneverthelessaggravatestheimmediateinflationaryproblembydivertingresourcesfromthecurrentproductionofgoodsinshort supply.

DevaluationoftheAustralian poundinrelationtothedollar hasledtoafurtherincreasein exporters'incomesandanincreaseinthepriceofgoodsfrom thedollararea.Aboutmid1949thereweresignsthatthe post-warinflationhadrunits course,butdevaluationputnew lifeintotheinflationaryforces.
Theworker,totheextentthat labourturnover,go-slowtactics andotherfactorswithinhisindividualorcollectivecontrol havebeenresponsibleforthelag inproduction,mustaccepthis shareofresponsibilityforthe problem.Butitisunfair,as issooftendone,tolaytheentireblameattheworker'sdoor.
RACKETS.
Whataboutthebusinessmen who,throughpowerfultradeusociationsortheirindividual monopolisticholdonthemarket,havebeenmaintaining pricesathigherlevelsthancan bejustifiedbycostsandreasonableprofits?Companyprofitshaverisenprogressively sincethewar-notonlyabsolutely,butrelativelytoshareholders'funds.In1946,accordingtoaCommonwealthBank index,companyprofitsaveraged 6.6percent.ofshareholders' funds;in1949,8.7percent.-an increaseofmorethan30per
cent.overthreeyears.Asthe increaseinwagesoverthesame periodwasonlyoftheorderor 20percent..itillbecomesbusinessmenandtheeditorsofsome dailynewspaperstoproclaimthe workerasthesolevillainofthe piece. Aproportionofmanufacturers protectedfromoverseascompe- titionbyahightariffwalland a havefavourableexchangerate, managerialdisplayedlittleregardfor efficiency.Instead ofregardingprofitsasareward forriskandefficiencytheyhave beencontenttopassonincreases incosts(includingwages)asa percentageincreaseinprices andacceptthebiggerabsolute "take-off"resultingfroma higherturnover.
WIDESPREADGUILT.
Then,therearethoseother contributingfactorssuchasthe war,devaluation,highexport pricesandcapitalinflowfrom overseas-thesearenomorethe responsibilityoftheworkerthan theyareoftherestofthecommunity.Wemustnotfallinto theerrorofmakingtheworker the"whipping-boy"forourinflationaryproblems.Itisunjust,anditisfoolish.Forif weconcentrateourattention solelyontheworker,werunthe riskofoverlookingthoseother factorswhichareconjointlyresponsibleforourpresentplight. Ontheotherhand,wemustnot falloverbackwards(asdothe Communists)inaneffortto "white-wash"theworkerand absolvehimfromhisfairshare ofresponsibility.
Inflationisaseriousproblem whichshouldbeconsideredobjectively,dueattentionbeing giventoeachofthecontributorycauses.Unlessthatis done,thereisthedangerthat theremedieswillbeinadequate; anduncheckedinflationwould certainlyjeopardisethewhole futureoftheAustralianeconomy.-"TheCatholicWeekly." TheAustralianeconomyis badlyout-of-jointwithlabour shortagesimpedingproduction inmostsegmentsand"bottlenecks"inessentialindustries actingasabrakeonproduction inotherindustries. !Themost importantofthese''bottlenecks" areinthecoal,ironandsteel andbuildingmaterialsindustries.Coalproductionin1949, at10,736,000tons,was3,964,000 tonsshortofrequirements.This hamperedproductioninthe steel,power,transportandother industries.Theoutputofpigironin1948-49wasonly94.2 percent.of1938-39,ofsteelingots99.6percent.These,admittedly,arespectacularitems, buttheyarebasictothebuildingandconstruction,heavyand lightengineeringindustries.
Whathascausedthislagin production?Foronething,the labourforceintheminingand buildingindustrieshasnotexpandedproportionatelytothe expansioninotherindustries. Whilstthetotalnumberofwage andsalaryearnersinemploymentroseby45percent.betweenJuly,1939,andDecember, 1940,thenumbersemployedin miningandquarryingincreased bylessthanthreepercent.,in buildingandconstructionby only26percent.

ThomasCooray,bytheBishop ofBangalore,MostRev.Peter Thomas,fromwhosedioceseit wasflown.toCeylon.Theentire CatholichierarchyofCeylon waspresentattheceremonyand theGovernor-GeneralofCeylon wasrepresentedbyhisAide-deCamp.Capt.R.H.S.O'Grady, andthePrimeMinisterbyMr. E.A.P.Wijeyeratne,HomeMinister.Whilethegreatcrowd kneltinprayer,Archbishop Cooray,accompaniedbythe otherBishops,carriedthestatue toanaltarerectedontheairport grounds.TheArchbishopafterwardsaddressedthepeoplein English,SinhaleseandTamil andexhortedthemtoprayer andpenanceandinanoccasionalsermoninSinhalese,on thesignificanceofthevisitof thestatue,VeryRev.D.J.Anthonyremarkedonthe"deep respectournon-Christiancountrymenindifferentwalksoflife arealreadymanifestingtowards theLankatourofthePilgrim Virgin."
Attheendoftheceremony, theArchbishopcarriedthe statuetoadecorated"chariot," whiletheclergyandpeoplesang the"AveMarisStella."The processionpassedroundthe airport,sothateveryonewould haveanopportunityofseeing andveneratingthestatue,and fromtheairportitwascarried throughvariouspartsofthecity onitswaytoSt.Mary'sChurch, Delhiwela.Herethecrowdwas sodensethatthestatuedidnot arriveuntil9p.m.,insteadof 7p.m.asscheduled.Avast crowd,saidtheTimes,thronged thechurchfromanearlyhour intheeveningandserviceswere heldthroughoutthenight.Many non-Catholicswerepresent.
Thestatuewillreturntothe ColomboarchdioceseonJuly6 andwillleaveCeylononJuly 15afterclosingceremoniesat St.Lucia'sCathedral.
Australianpilgrimswho bookedforthecustomarytours whileinportsawnothing,save byaccident,ofColombo'sCatholiclife.Aclean,whiteand largeconventschoolcouldbe glimpsedasthebusesspedpast andgroupsof'neatlydressed, smiling,barefootedchildren, carryingtheirschool-booksfrom theconventgatesspokeeloquentlyoftheworkbeingdone bythenuns,butitwasthose pilgrimswhohadtheinspiration orgoodfortunetohirecarsfor apartyandwhowereprivileged tomeetwithaCatholicdriver whowereenabled.toseethe thingsinwhichHolyYearpilgrimsaremostinterested.
SomeweretakentoSt.Lucia's Cathedralandwereimpressed withitsbeautifulstatuesand decorationandwiththefaithof thepeoplethere,somesawthe boys'school,conductedbythe DeLaSalleBrothers,andmet thehappychildren;somevisited St.Anthony's,dedicatedtoa saintforwhomtheislanders haveaspecialanddeepveneration.ArelicofSt.Anthony's tongueisherecontainedina reliquaryandforSt.Anthony eventhenon-Catholicshavedecidedrespect.
Fortherest,pilgrimswere elatedbythenoveltyofthe exoticEast,thequaintnessof themyriadlittlevillageshops strungalongtheroutetoMount Livinia,wheremostpilgrims weredriveninamulti-coloured fleetofbuses.MountLivinia provedtobelittlemorethana terminus,asaptlynamedas SeaView,BrokenHill,buta handsomehotelprovidedlunch forthosewhoavailedthemselvesofitandthewaitinghorde ofenterprisingnativesendeavouredtointerestthevisitorsin allmannerofmanufacturesand tosolicitarupeeortwoforeven aglanceintheirdirection,as promptlyasanyauctioneerdetectinga"bid."Bothonthetrip tothe"Mount"andonthe returnthemostfascinating glimpseswerethoseofthenumerouslanesorstreetsbranching awayfromthemainroadon eitherside,revealingcool,green, shadyavenuesleadingtoinvitingbyplaces.Inthecityandits immediateenvironstheairwas delightfulwiththemusicofinnumerablemotorhorns,honking incessantlyineveryimaginable key,harmonizingmerrilywith trambells,rickshawbellsand otherindefinablenoises,the whilethebusplungedthrough trafficwhichseemedtogoin everydirection.Cyclists,their duskyfeetpedallingvigorously andtheirwhitegarmentsflowinginthewind,woundamazinglyinandout,dodgingmotor yehiclesbyahair'sbreadth,and, inthemidstofthebustle,bullockwaggonsploddedpatiently along,completelyobliivousof timeandthetideoftraffic.

Calmtomoderateweatherfollowedfobacoupleofdaysout fromColombo,butonthe Thursdaymorninglightningawl thunderusheredinboisterous weatherandmonsoonalgales. Asthedayworeontheship begantopitchandheavemightily,andpilgrimswhowere makingtheirmaidenseavoyage gottheirfirsttasteofarough sea,sailingduewestfromMinakoiIsland,aboutLat.8,17and Long.61.MinakoiIsland,which theStrathairdpassedonthis route,isnorthofthelongchain ofMaldiveIslands,stretching south.
Inthemorning,shortlybefore breakfast,theStrathairdshippedaseaonitsF.Deck,the lowestdeckopentothewater. Inthebestjournalisttradition, TheAdvocatecorrespondentwas onthespot,somuchsothathe wasengulfedinthewaveand sweptalongthedecklikea peanutinacascade.Allhecould seewasgreenandallhecould feelwasawarmandmighty rushing.Fortunatelyhewasnot hurledagainstanysteelstanchionordeckfitting,butcameto restinawhirlingcomplexityof deckchairs.Hepickedhimself upasthewavelefthimhighbut notdryandwenttotheassistanceofanelderlyladytowhom hehadbeenspeakingatthe momentofwateryimpact.She wasbewilderedandthoroughly soakedbutwasnothurt.She alsocametorestamongthe deckchairs.Anotherpilgrim caughtinthesamedelugehad thedoctor'sattention.Theexperiencewasinvigorating,with noaftereffectssavetheproblem ofgettingthesaltoutofone's clothes.Thedeckwasimmediatelyropedoff.

Ofitself,thestoryofthe statue'sarrivalinCeylonmerits reporting,butitisparticularly fittingaspartoftheAustralian HolyYearpilgrims'story,forit isastrikingevidenceofthe strengthandvitalityofthe Catholicfaithinalandwhich gavetheAustralianstheirfirst andcompletelynovelexperienceofaforeigncountry,one thatbecauseofdarkskinsand curiousEasterncustomsmight appearaltogetherCatholicin faith.Notallpilgrimsweregiven theopportunityofrealizing thattheCatholicChurchin CeylonoutnumbersallnonCatholicsects,thatseveralvillageshavebeenentirelyCatholicforgenerations,andthatthe beautifulcathedralandmany churches,notablyintheheartof thenativetown,arefullof worshippersalldaylong.The FaithinCeylonmakesan impactonthenativenon-Catholics,too,asthereferenceabove tothepresenceofmanynonCatholicsattheceremoniesin honourofthePilgrimVirgin indicates,manyBuddhistand HindusswellCatholicproce§sionsandpilgrimagesandinvoketheaidofCatholicsaints.
Inthecity,pilgrimsfollowed theirowndevicesandwandered about,peeringintoshopsand doingtheirbesttoresisttheimportunatesalesmenorshopmen's Agentsthrongingthefootpaths. Foranyonewhodecidedtoenter ashoptherewerehalf-a-dozen broadlysmilingguidestoshow theway.Onecouldnotcrossthe roadwithoutaneagercicerone ateitherelbow.Itwasallvery spiritedandtheanimationwas astrikingcontrasttothestaid behaviourAustraliansareused to.Ateverycorner,inevery greatstore,fellowpilgrimswere met,alltiredbutexcited.Everyonehadsomeamusingstoryof theirfirstadventuresinaforeignland.Therewas,forexample,thenativewho,earnestlyendeavouringtoconvince apilgrim,caughtsightofthe Australianpilgrim'sbadge,shapedtoamapofAustralia.Gazingatthebadgeforamoment, thenative'seyelitup."Fair dinkum,"hecried,"fairdinkum." Therickshawmenmadea prettyrupeerunningpilgrims roundforafewmoments,orfor posingWithapilgriminthe vehicleforaphotograph. ThestayinColombowas short,butexhaustinginthe blisteringheat,andtheStrathairdreallyseemedlikehome whenpilgrimsarrivedbackon board.Thedaysfollowingwere spentinexchangingreminiscences. AustralianHolyYearpilgrims havebeenblessedwithacool RedSeapassage.Arefreshing, bracingbreeze-blowing,itis saidonnavigationalauthority, fromanewquarterfromthat usuallyexperienced-temperedtheheatnicely,sothatconditionsonboardtheshipwerenot unpleasant,exceptinthecabins. AsthewatersoftheRedSea weredisposedbyGodtopermit safepassageforMosesandhis peopleinto.thePromisedLand, thecoolwindacrossthehotexpanseofseathathasgrowninto adreadlegendamongtravellers wasanoccasionforthankful prayer.

NolandissightedintheRed Sea,saveasmallgroupofislands,untiltheSinaiPeninsula closesinattheentrancetothe GulfofSuez.Awaytotheright (starboard,pilgrimshavelearnedtocallit)liesthesacred MountSinai,whereMosesreceivedfromGodtheTenCommandments.Awesettlesona Christiantraveller,especiallya pilgrimtoChristianity'scentre, asherealizesthatheis,inthese regions,inthecradleofhistory andofcivilization.Thelandof Arabia,uponwhichpilgrims setfootatAden,receivesfrequentmentionintheOldTestamentandthereissomeground forbelievingthatAdenisthe OphiroftheSacredBooks.Here Cainissaidtolieburiedand heretheQueenofShebaissaid tohavesetouttovisitSolomon. Itis,therefore,withadeep senseofreverencethatpilgrims gazeonthenowbarren,forbiddingshoresthatmaybeseen fromthedecksoftheirpilgrim ship.
Accordingtotradition,the RedSeapassageoftheIsraelitesfromEgypttoChanaanwas atthenorthernendofwhatis nowknownastheGulfofSuez, justsouthofSuezitself.But eventhepassageoftheCanal isatmosphericwithhistory, sacredandprofane.TheCanal isnotamoderninvention,tothe creditsolelyofDeLesseps.This greatengineerwas,infact,inspiredbythebeliefthatthere had,inancienttimes,beena waterwaybetweentheMediterraneanandtheRedSeaandhe determinedthatwhatprimitives haddonewiththelimitedmeans attheirdisposalcouldbemanagedby19thcenturyengineers. AfterthemailservicewasextendedtoEgyptin1840and whenthefurtherserviceofthe P.&0.shipsgavethemtheir nameofPeninsulaandOrient,mailsandpassengershadto crosstotheRedSeabythe OverlandRoute,whilefollowed thatoftheancientPharadhs. MerchantstravelledfromIndia bydhowswhicharenowfamiliartopilgrimswhosawthem inthewatersaboutAdenand Colombo.Thedesertwascrossedbydonkeysandcamelsto theNileandthenceonbythe rivertotheMediterranean.Or, alternatively,themerchantsand travellerscontinuedtheirsea passagetoSuezandcrossedthe deserttoCairo. FacilitiesonthisOverland Routewereprimitiveandhazardous,butin1844theP.&0. SteamNavigationCompanytook overtherouteandmadeextensiveimprovementsfortheconvenienceoftravellers,including horsedrawncarriages,withfrequentchangesofhorses,good diningrooms,goodcooks,clean bedroomsandbeds.Arabsteeds racedacrossthedesertinplace oftheslow-ploddingcamel. Mailstookanaverageof64hour fromsteamertosteamerand passengerscrossedthe250miles fromseatoseain78hours,allowingtimeforsight-seeing.
ThefirstP.&0.mailsteamer arrivedinAustralia,bytheway, in1853.Thehistoryoftheserviceisthenboundupwiththe heavydemandsmadeforgoodsandpassagefollowinguponthe discoveryofgold.Itisrelated, forexample,thatatthegreat banquetgiveninMelbourneto celebratethearrivalofthefirst P.&0.ship,theChusan,a newly-builtironscrewsteamer of699tons,thechairmandeclaredthatthetwogreatestbe- nefitsofQueenVictoria'sreign werethediscoveryofgoldand theestablishmentofsteamcommunicationbetweenBritainand Austpalia.AmedalofVictorian goldwasstruckandpresented totheCaptain.Butanarmed guardhadtobeplacedonthe vesseltopreventthecrewfrom desertingtothegoldfields.In Sydney,similarly,theChusan anchoredoffshore,sothatthe crewcouldnotgetaway,and also,possibly,toprotectthegold whichshecarried.
Inthe'fiftiestheOverland Routerailwaywasbuiltbythe PashaofEgypt,forwhich projecttheP.&0.Company lentaquarterofamillion.The erection,also,ofthetelegraph, wasanotherremarkableimprovementincommunication. Thencamethecuttingofthe Canal,thebenefitofwhichpilgrimsareenjoying. *
Forthosewhohadnottravelledthis,oranyother,route before,thecomingintoAden wasanunforgettableexper-ience.TheStrathairdwasdelayedacoupleofhoursbytheroughweatherexperiencedin thelaststretchoftheIndian Ocean,hencepassengersgazed anxiouslyforthelandfallas theafternoonofSaturday,June 3,woreon.Ahazehadsettled ontheGulfofAdenandthus, whenatlastthereloomeddimly atowering,serratedshape,its heightabovethewatersuggest- edacloudbank,ratherthanthe lowsightoflandthatwatchers expectedtosee.Butastheconsistentoutlinewasrevealedin moredetailandwasseentobe land,indeed,thegrim,barren massofvolcanicrock,"annexed"justoveracenturyago(in 1849)as"thefirstjewelinthe crownofQueenVictoria,"impressedbyitsgauntgrandeur.Passengerslandedatatypical outpostportbylaunchesand dispersedasthesunwassetting intherapidlydarkeningshadowsofthemassivesurrounding mountains.Thesestoodhigh againsttheskyline,athousand feetorso,likesomeweird, backgrounddecorforaDisney Witches'Sabbath.Mostpilgrimsmadefirst,aftertheirColomboexperience,fortheCatholicchurch,whichwasonlya minuteor Steamertwo'swalkingfrom Point.Aneat,attractive littleshrine,dedicatedtoSt. FrancisofAssisi,itfaces'an esplanaderoadalongthewaterfront,andlooksoutontheharbourandtheshipping.Anotice intheporchtoldpilgrimsthat theywerenowintheVicariate ApostolicofArabiaandthatthe clergywereFranciscans,Capuchins,asamatteroffact.Inthe churchtheRosarywasbeingrecitedandtherewasagoodcon-
gregation,mostlyofdevoutnatives.Fromthehighceiling,on longsupports,sixelectricfans whirledsteadily.Besideeach column,whichseparatedthe navefromtheaisles,stoodwellmadestatuesofthesaints.Outside,overlookingthestreetand harbour,St.Franciswasconspicuous.Besidethechurchwas themonasteryandbehinditthe convent,inwhichlivethecommunityofFranciscannuns.The school,alsonearby,isconducted bythePatricianBrothers.
Neatlydressedinwhite,a coupleofCatholicArabyouthsstandingoutsidethechurchconversedinexcellentEnglishwith someofthevisitorsandwere delightedtolearnthattheywere Australianpilgrims,goingto Rome.Theyouthsseemedsurprisedtolearnthattherewere almost700pilgrimsfromAus- tralia.
*Adenhasnotquite1000Catholicsinapopulationofclose on90,000.Itistheheadquarters oftheVicariateandsooninresidencewillbethenewVicarApostolic,MostRev.Mgr.Ma- gliacani,O.F.M.Cap.,whowas butrecentlyconsecratedin Rome.TheSistershaveabout 150pupilsintheirschool,and theBrothershaveaboutthe samenumberofboys.TheReverendMotherofthecommunity of Cantwell,Sisters,MotherAnnMary isanativeofIreland andcameouttoAden49years ago.Shecelebratedhergolden jubileelastyear.
AtCrater,sixmilesdistant (theseweirdmountainsriseon thesiteofanextinctvolcano) theSistershaveanotherconvent andschoolandheretheSuperior,alsofromIreland,hasbeen inAden15years.Shewasformerly'withthecommunityin Abyssinia. Ofthe90,000inhabitantsof Adenthedominatingrace,Arab, isMosleminreligion,andthese numbersome60,000.Oftherest, thereare7,000Jews,over9,000 Indiansand4000Somalis.There areonly365Europeans.Ofthe ChristiansinAden,90percent. areCatholic.
*Someglimpseofthisstrange, rockyplacewasgotbythose whohiredacaranddroveout, inparties,tothe"City,"aninlandsortofa"hide-out,"thatin itsscenicapproachseemedmore theatricalthanthatfamiliaras thetraditionalstage-settingfor thesmugglers'retreatin Carmen.Thecars,drivenspeed- ilybyexpertdrivers,woundup aprecipitousascent,afterpas- singthroughexoticnative quartersalongthewell-made road,andclimbedintotheface ofthetowering,mountainous wallofsheerrock.Presently, thereopenedaheadasheerslit inthemountain,apassjustwide enoughfortwocarstomove abreastandclosedatthetopby whatappearedtobeanenclosedbridge,somethingsimilarto thepicturedrepresentationof theVenetian"BridgeofSighs." Throughthiserieentrancethe carsrushedontoaroaddescendingintothecupshapedvalley behindthemountainandinno timethepilgrimswereruninto anativeshoppingcentre,asthe nightfell.
The"city"wasalivewith, strangenoisesandsmells,the footpathsthrongedwithan evermovingpopulation.Dusky police,trimlydressedinshorts andjacketandwearingblack fez-likecaps,patrolledwatch- fullyandkeptthstrollersmoving.Theshops-bazaars.or booths-werelightedgenerally withfluorescentlightingandthe shopkeepers,unlikethoseof Colombo,werenotgivento pressingtheirwares.All,especiallythechildren,spokewith anattractivesoftnessofvoice andgesture.
Timebeingshort,therewas littletimetolingerinthis quaintandfascinating"city", andpilgrimsreturnedtotheir carsandwerequicklydriven backtoSteamerPoint.Here manyshops,closedatthetimeof theStrathaird'sarrivalforthe usualSaturdayhalf-holiday, re-openedroundabout7p.m. andinmostofthempilgrims wereseenexaminingthegoods offeredforsale.By9p.m.,all wereonboardagainandbetweentenandeleventhepilgrim shipmovedoutoftheglittering harbourintothedarknessofan Easternnight.Thelast.sightof Adenwasthismyriadtwinkling oftinylightsagainstthegrim backclothofthemountains,high inthesky.

passagewereallayedbythecool windwhichblewontheSunday, theirfirstdayinitshistoricand malignedwaters.Nothingeventfulwasexpectedinitssecluded laneofshipping,apartfromthe almostconstantpassingofships, goingthiswayorthat,butsome- thingofamildsensationwas causedonSundaynight,abouta quartertoeight,whenaftera dimmingortwotheship'slightsfadedoutandthefamiliarthrob oftheenginesceased,leavingin placeofitssteadythrobthe soundofwaveslappingagainsttheship'srail.Thosewhowere intheircabinsandhadtorches gropedfortheminthedarkness andlightedtheirwaystothe decks.Bythistimethemomentumoftheshipwasceasingand presentlyitwasleftrockingidly onthegentleswellofthesea. Passengerspushedaboutinthe darknessorfollowedthosewith torchesorclusteredalongthe railswatchingthelightsofdistantsteamers.Afteraspacean emergencylightingsystem, muchdimmerthantheregular system,cameintooperationand ontheforemast,fromthe bridge,anumberofredlights werehoisted.Rumoursandexplanationspassedroundlike wildfireassignallightswere seenflashingfromothershipsin thevicinity,answeringthose fromtheStrathaird.Butafter aboutahalf-hour'semergency, thelightscameonagainand wereansweredwitha.cheer,the propellers,turnedagainandthe shipwasoncemoreonitsway.
Laterintheeveningtheleader ofthepilgrimage,hisGrace MostRev.J.Duhig,Archbishop ofBrisbane,addressedmeetings ofpilgrimsinthefirstandtouristclassdiningsaloons.Besides givingthepilgrimsseveralpracticalpointsofadvicefortheir guidanceinRome,theArch-' bishopexpressedthewishthat, inaccordancewithimmemorial custom,theAustralianpilgrims
shouldmakeapresentationto theHolyFatherontheoccasion ofthespecialaudiencewhich willbesoughtfortheAustralians.Itseemedbest,Dr.Duhig said,thatthepresentationshould beintheformofacontribution toPeter'sPence.Rev.A.R.E. Thomas,directorofthepilgrimage,explainedthatthedonationswouldbevoluntaryand anonymous.Otherdetailsconcerningpilgrims'movements andconvenienceindisembarkingatGenoaandtheirsojourn inRomeandelsewherewere explainedbytheassistantdirector,Rev.E.Perkins.

Whatofallthehundredsof otherswhoarenotsofavoured?
Themajorityoftheparents ofthesechildrenaregood,well meaning,open-heartedpeople whowouldbedelightedtohave someonetotakeaninterestin theirchildrenandgivethem somereligioustraining.
Iknowofoneparticularcase ofCatholicchildrenbeingallowedtogotonon-Catholic Sundayschool,becausethe childrenlikeit,andtheirvery finenon-catholicmotherseesno harminit.Thefather,alax Catholic,haseveryintentionof sendingthesechildrentoa Catholicboardingschoollater. Inthemeantimeirreparable damageisbeingdone.
Anothercaseisoneofanindustrialtownshipwithapopul- ationofaboutonehundred families,situatedwithin20miles ofabigcentrewherethereisa churchandaprieststationed. Nopriestevervisitedthetown andnoMasswascelebrated thereforatleastfiveyears.
Incidentlytherewerequitea lotofCatholicsthere.
Aftermakingenquiriesabout thecasefromthepriest20 milesdistant,wefoundthathis parishdidnotgouptothat area,butitwasintheparish ofanotherprieststationedabout100milesaway.Eventuallythispriestwascontactedand hetravelledapprox.100miles tocelebrateMassforthese people.
Itwillprobablybesaidthat thesepeopleshouldhavedone somethingaboutitthemselves. Thatisthewholepoint,thevast majorityhavebecomecareless throughlackofcontactwiththe Church.Thefeelingamong themisthatno-oneworries aboutthem.
Idon'tmeantobedestructiveinmycriticismoftheadministrationsoIamputtingforwardsomesuggestionswhichI thinkwillgoalongwaytowardsbringingthesepeopleback totheFaithandmakingthem feelthattheyarewantedand wantedbadly.
1st.Reorganizationofparish ordiocesanboundariestomake easierandmorepracticalworkingoftheparishes.
2nd.Morefrequentcontact ofpriestandpeoplebyvisits tothehomei.
Atpresentitismostlycontactwiththosewhoalways maketheefforttoattendMass, whiletheothers,who,through nofaultoftheirownhavenot hadthebenefitofsoundreligiousinstructionintheirchildhood,arejustlefttogotheir ownway.Personalcontact wouldmeanalotto'these people.

In1944,ourcountry,Chung Shan,wasoccupiedbytheJapaneseforalongtime.Since thenallthepeopleandespeciallythefarmerssufferedahard life.AftertheJapaneseoccupation,Ifollowedmyuncleto ploughourfield,andplantall kindsofvegetables,forwepossessedagreatfarmandmany fields.
BeforetheJapscame,we passedacomfirtablelife.When theJapaneseoccupiedourcountry,allofourpropertieswere robbedbythecruelsoldiersas wellasthebadtraitors.Asto ourlandsandfarms,theywere mostlydestroyedbytheattack oftheJaps.Sowebecame poor.
DuringtheperiodoftheJapaneseoccupation,wecouldnot getsufficientfoodandmoney, thoughweworkedveryhard. ThenIsuggestedtocomeoutof mycountrybymyself,butmy uncledidnotagreewithmeat first.AfterIbeggedtwice,my uncleconsentedtoletmego.
Pickingupallmyoldclothes inahalf-brokencase,Isaid good-byetoallmyneighbours.
ThenIsetoutonmyjourney.
BeforeIstarted,Imadeupmy mindtogotoMacau,becauseI wastoldbeforethatMacauwas aneutralplace,andthatitwas considereda"Paradise."On myjourney,Itravelledbyfoot, forIpossessedonlysixdollars atthattime.Afterwalkingfor aboutsixdays,Ireachedmy idealdestination-Macau.Indeed,Macauseemedtobea paradisebecausealmostnineout oftenoftherichrefugees wenttolivethereasasafe shelter.

Oneday,asIwascarrying mynewspapers,IwalkedaimlesslyuntilIreachedacertain CatholicChurch.Ifelldeeply asleepinfrontofthechurch door,asIwasverytired.When IwokeupIsawamanstandingbeforemeandsmilingatme. Hewasapriest.Ofcourse,I wasverysurprisedatthat.But Isummonedupmycourage.At last,thepriestaskedmemany thingsandItalkedwithhim andtoldhimallmybadconditions.Thepriesttookpityon me.Hegavememanyold clothes,socksandapairofold boots.Thekindpriesttoldme thathewouldintroducemeto someonetofindajob.Afew dayslater,Ibecameaservantin thechurch,andIwasnomorea hawkerandbeggar.-From "HongKongStudent."

Beforegoingtothefair,we hadtakentheprecautionofputtingafewmoredollarsinour pockets.That,itmightbesaid, isthefittingcommentonthe fair,fortoalltheEuropean visitors,thewaresondisplay weresomewhatoutoftheordinary.
Withthatfactfirmlyinmind, thefairwasquiteenjoyable,at leastuntilthecrowdsreached suchproportionsthatanyone ithatouchofclaustrophobia begantothink:"Letmeoutof here."
ThewarinChinahasimpairedtheimportationofmany beautifularticlesfromthe North,butneverthelessitwas excitingtoseethemiscellaneous Chinesewaresenmasse.
Chinesesilks,pottery,flowers, anymanyotherthingswere prominentlydisplayed.Paintingsandscrollscouldbeseen, andwespentsometimeadmiringsomeofthem,andcriticising others.
Manystallssoldperfumed woods,incense,andhardwood curios.Toattractbuyers,the merchantsburnedsmallpieces ofcamphorwood,andlettheir delicatesmellriseupintothe coldeveningair.Whatwasso nicetoseewasthegrainofthe woods.
Ourmainattractionwasthe flowers,miniaturegardensand thepriceswererathersteepfor us.Tropicalfishesofdelicate coloursandfilmyfinsswamin largeglasstanks,seeminglyunawareoftheinterestpaidto thembythecuriousvisitors.We greatlyadmiredtheskilland

TheannualReunionwasheld duringthelongweek-endin June.About60OldBoysmade thetripfromPerth,besides othersfromthecountrywhoarrivedundertheirownpower. Noticeablewastheminorityof OldBoysofthepre-"40"vintage,whileitwasverypleasing toseesuchalargeattendanceof theyoungerex-scholars,many ofwhomweremakingtheirfirst visitbacktoAlmaMater.This augurswellforthefutureofthe Association,astheyareavery energeticandinterestedgroup.
Sundaymorningwastheusual generalCommunionoftheOld BoysatMassintheCollege Chapel,celebratedbyRev. FatherPeter,O.S.B.During Massappropriatehymnswere snugbytheCollegeChoir,under thedirectionofBrotherEvan.
Thefirstsportingfixturesof theReunionwerecommencedon Sundaymorning,withthehandballandtennistournaments. MickConnollyranoutawinner fromNeilCummingsinthe handball,whileJimMacpherson,partneredbypresentboy, PaulWhite,wonthetennis.
Sundayafternoonwasspent watchingthepresentboysbattlingonthefootballfield.Those whowerefortunateenoughto compromiseavailabletransport journeyedtoCaranitocheerthe seniorteamon,buttolittle effectastheladswentdown fightinghardtoamoreexperiencedandweightyteam.The game,however,waswellworth thetrip.Athomethesecond teamhadlittletroubleinalmost completelyannihilatingMoors Colts,winningatleisurewith thewidestofmargins.

Inreplyingtothetoastofthe PresidentoftheAssociation,Bill KinshelathankedBrotherLucientforhisremarksandassuredhimofthecontinuedsupport oftheOldBoys'Association.
Thetoastof_theMaristBrotherswasveryablyhandledby LeoHickey,whopointedout thatitwasnotuntilsomeyears afterleavingtheCollegeexstudentsbegantorealisefully thegreatworktheMaristBrothershaddoneforthemandwas stilldoingforthepresent-day youthofAustraliaandthroughouttheworldwhereverMarist schoolswereestablished.
ReplyingtothetoastonbehalfoftheMaristBrothers,BrotherAmbrose,himselfafoundationscholaroftheCollege,renewedmemoriesofmanyformerPrincipalsandBrotherswho hadeitherpassedontotheir finalrewardorwhowerestill labouringeitherinAustraliaor foreigncountries. NogatheringatNewNorcia couldbecompletewithoutmentionoftheBenedictineOrder. GeorgeJeffs.inproposingthe toastoftheBenedictines,outlinedthefoundationoftheOrder fromhumblebeginningstoits presentdaygrowththroughout theworld--especiallythemissionaryworkoftheOrderin Australia.
TheLordAbbotrespondedon behalfoftheBenedictines,and expressedhissincerethanksfor whathadbeensaid.Hethen wentontoinformthosepresent oftheworksinhandforimprovementstotheCollege, amongstwhichwasapermanent undergroundwatersupplyto augmentthelatelydeepenedreservoir,andtheerectionofan Olympicswimmingpool.
Afterthedinnerashortconcertwasarrangedbythepresentboys.OldBoyNeilMan-
nolinisuppliedseveralnumbers onhispiano-accordeon.
MondaymorningfoundOld BoysbattlingagainstPresent Boysinhockey.Determinedto turnthetablesthisyear,the entirehockeyteamhadjourneyedtotheReunionand,despite thehardground,sorefeet,and excellenthockeyoftheCollege, cameoutvictors,2goalstonil. Asthiswasthefirstgame againstoutsideopposition,the boysturnedonsomegreatplay. Wehaveoureyesonsomeof themfor Thenextyear.usualfootballmatchtook placeonMondayafternoon,and, owingtothelargenumberof youngerOldBoystochoose from,averystrongfieldwent outtobattle.Duringthisgame somereallylivelyplaywaswitnesseddespiteblisteredtoesand jarredheels.Thegamewas wonbytheOldBoys.Thetrophyforthefairestandbest playerintheCollegeteamwent toBrianClifford,whoplayeda greatgameagainstgreatopposition.
Thefootballover,weadjournedtotheMonastery,wherewe weretheguestsoftheLord Abbot.Hereacquaintanceswith theBenedictineFatherswererenewed,andDomMorenoobliged withadelightfulpianosolo.To thestrainsof"OldLangSyne," wemadeourdepartureamidst manyhandshakesandcheery "good-byes."
TheReunionwasnowrapidly drawingtoaclose,andwith casespackedinthebuswemade ourwaytotheCollege,where trophieswerepresentedand farewelltakenoftheBrothers andboys.Withmanycheers andheartysongsweslowlydrew awayonourhomewardtrek backtothecity-backtoworkallheartilyagreeingthatithad beenagreatweek-end.
Toallthosewhomadethis suchahappyoccasionweextend oursincerethanks-toBrother LucienandtheBrothers,for theirgreathospitality;tothe Benedictines,fortheircareof ourspiritualwelfare;andto Mrs.SmithandtheHostelstaff, fortheirgreatanduntiringhospitalitywhichwasappreciated byall.
