Thealtarburnedintheblazeofpoinsettias,whilethecentreofthe sanctuarywasoccupiedbythearchiepiscopc1prie-dieu,drapedin greenandthecoat-of-armsoftheSee.

TheRosarywasthenrecited byallpresent,ledbyRev.Fr. s'Thomas,NationalDirectorofthe Pilgrimage.Afterthesingingof "Hail,QueenofHeaven,"Dr. Duhigaddressedthepilgrims.

HisGracesaidthatitwas anhistoricdayfortheCatholics ofAustralia.Thatdayour Pilgrimagesaidgood-byeto thebelovedshoresofournationaloradoptedcountry.They weresettingoutonthelargest ,pilgrimagethathadeverleft Australia.

Littlebylittletheywouldbe approachingtheshoresofEurope,andastheygot'nearer andnearertotheEternalCity, theheartsofallwouldbeat andglowwithgreaterfervour andlove,withhigherhopeand deepercharity.

Therewouldbeapilgrimage fromeverycountryinthe worldthisyeartowardsRome.

HiscomingtoRomewasmore significantthatwhatwasvery greatinthehistoryofthatcity, forhewasdestinedtosetup thereathronethatwouldlast forlongerthanthethroneof theCaesars.Hewasdestinedto setuptherethesourceandthe

Outsidethewalls,theywould findthemagnificentbasilicaof St.PaulandtheywouldrememberthatgloriousApostle whowalkedasapilgrimto Romeandwhowasdestinedto setuptherewithSt.Peterthat whichwouldneverend:"Behold,Iamwithyoualldays, eventotheconsummationof theworld."Theywouldstand

PrelatesenroutetotheCathedralfortheSolemnHinerarium.HisGracetheArchbishopisfollowedbyArchbishopDuhig,BishopGleesonandLordAbbotCatalanO.S.B. proclaimtheirfaithinChrist, theirproudmembershipofthe ChurchwhichPeterhadsetup. Theyhadcomeaspenitentsto maketheirofferingsatthetomb oftheApostles.Someofthem neverreturned;theygave,their livesasmartyrs.

AtRometheywouldfind thosechapelswheretheEarly ChristiansreceivedtheSacraments.Theywouldreachthe Catacombs.Buttheirfirstvisit wouldbetothetombsofthe

thespiritualblessingsbrought tothatSee.Theyhadgood reasontogoandthanktheHoly Father nariesfortheearlymissiohehadsenttoAustralia, forourfirstBishop(Dr.Polding),andfortheothersalldown throughtheyearsforallthe caretheyhadtakenofthe Church.

Theyweregoingtotellthe HolyFatherofthefruitfulness andhopefulnessoftheyoung ChurchofAustralia,ofthegreat thingsthathadbeendonehere inthisnewnationforGodand forsouls.Theywouldbeable totellhimofourgreatreligiouscommunitiescarryingon theworksofeducationand charity.

ItwouldrejoicetheHoly Father'sheartwithgladnessto hearthegreatnewsofthevigo-rousnewchurcheshereatthe endsoftheearth.TheHolyFatherhadrepeatedtoArchbishopDuhigandtootherAustralianbishopsthatAustralia hada"bigyoungChurch."He wasremindedofwhatwassaid totheApostles"Youshallbe witnessestoMetotheendsof theearth."

Theyhadbornewitnessto Christinthetownsandvillages, intheshearingshedsandminingcamps.Inallsincerity,and humility,therefore,theyhad agloriousstorytocarrybefore theHolyFather.Theywere goingaspenitents,fortheHoly Fatherhadcalledthisyearthe yearoftheGreatReturn.They werenotgoingmerelyforthemselves,butfortheircountry. Theyweregoinginaspiritof humility,penance,joyandhope.

AsectionofthepilgrimsinthenaveofSt.Mary'sInset:Dr.Duhigmakinghisaddress. Butnopilgrimagefromany countrywouldgive'theHoly Fathergreaterjoyandconsolationthanthatonefromthe youngestoftheChristiannations,fromtheendsofthe earth.

"Already,"continuedHis Grace,"theyknowinRome thatyouarecoming.Theyare expectingyou,r.ndyou,wits thehighesthopes,arelooking forwardtoyourexperiencesin thatcitywhereitwasSt.Pe-

Inconclusion,Dr.Duhigexpressedhisregretthathehad notbeenwiththembefcre.He thankedtheHierarchyforhavingappointedhimtoleadthe PilgrimageandtheCardinaland Archbishopsofthecapitalcities forhavingplacedtheircathedralsatthedisposalofthepil- grims.Thepilgrimswouldbehappywherevertheywentbecausetheywouldbehonouring God,HisBlessedMother,their Faithandtheirnativeland.

Thenewly-createdSaintand1870atFontfroide,Narbonne,excommunicationwaspublished intheVaticannewspaper,Os-

Theyoungpriestbeganimmediatelytodevotehimselfto whathadbeenhisdesire throughouthislife:themissionaryapostolate.Forseveral yearshetravelledthroughout thediocese.Healsoengagedin missionaryworkinCatalonia andtheCanaryIslands.

Inaddition,hedevotedhis giftstoanotheractivity,writingandpublishing.Recognizing theimmenseapostolicvalueof thepress,hebecamethefounderofaCatholicpublishing houseandestablishedthegreat religiouslibraryatBarcelona.

Hebeganhisgreatestwork in1849-thefoundingofthe CongregationoftheMissionary SonsoftheImmaculateHeast ofMary,generallyknownfis theClaretians,-ononeofhis returnstoVich.Despitemany obstacles,theyoungcongregationrapidlydevelopedunder theleadershipandinspiration ofitsfounder.Whenhediedin

SpeakinginFrenchtoan audienceof200delegatesof55 nationsattendingtheEleventh InternationalCongressonHighFrequencyBroadcasting,the Popedeclaredth,:.thesupreme aimofalleducationistohelp man,astheimageofGod,to perfecthimselfinthoughts,desiresandactions.Radiocannot excludethisaimfromitsother dutiesandends,thePontiff declared.

Washington-Whilethe UnitedStateswaslooking forwardtoitslastnational elections,in1948,thecommunistsseizedCzechoslovakiaand consolidatedtheirholdonthat country;madetheir"allout" butunsuccessfulbidtotake overItalyinAprilelections; extendedtheirpersecutionsof religioninCzechoslovakiaand Hungary;madeashowoftheir strengthinFrance;gainedmomentumfortheirsweepacross China,andplannedtheworldshockingarrestofCardinal Mindszenty,whichactuallytook placeaftertheelections,on December27,1948. What,ifanything,Russiawill undertakethisyear,whenit believestheAmericanpeople aremoreconcernedwithvacations,amusementsandelections,isasourceofmuchconjecture.Itcancalluponits puppetsineitherEuropeor Asiatosettheworldinnoisy andunproductive,ifnotactuallyruinous,turmoil. Wetryvariousfamiliardevices tobringthenameintoconsciousness.Weknowwehave thenamestoredawayinour rationalmemory.Sometimes, byarightassociationofideas weareable,aswesay,to 'bringthenametomind.'Oftenwefail.But,afteratime, whenwehavebeenengagedon quitedifferentmentalopera- tions,thenamesuddenlyjumpsintoconsciousness.

Anothersimpleexperience, notuncommonamongstspeakersandwriters,istoturnan ideaoverinthemindandthen allowittodrop.Aftersome time,perhapsatnight,perhaps afteranumberofdays,the personreturnstotheideaand, atonce,findsthecentralidea connectedupwithotherideas, ofteninalogicalorder,sothat hisdiscourseorhischapteris almostreadyforhim.Thisis anotherexampleofthesubconsciousassociatingofideas. Anyideainthehumanmind has,whenitwasformed,or whenitwasused,beenconnectedwithmanyotherideas. Thesedropintothebackground ofmemory.Butwhentheidea isbroughttoattentionitislikelytobringintotheforegroundtheotherideasformerly associatedwithit.Theprocess ofrecallisnotaconsciousone: whentheresultoftheprocess istomakeconscious,oftenin anorderlymanner,theseassociatedideas,wespeakofthe processastheworkofthesubconsciousmind.Howfarthis process,oftencomparedtothe workingofanautomaticexchange,ispsychic,howfaritis material,itisbeyondourpurposetoexamine.Butthisacti-

Thefirstmissionwasheldin theLentof1948.Advertisementswereplacedinthefour Protestantpapers.Headed"A MissiontoNon-Catholics,"they, setouttheproposedorderof timeforthespecialSundayeveningservices,whichwould beheldhalfanhourafterthe closeoftheregularSunday eveningdevotions.Theorder oftimewas:

WhenthefirstCatholicchurch inBelfast-St.Mary's,still standing-wasopenedin1783, theIrishVolunteers,non-Catholicsall,turnedoutaguard ofhonourfortheoccasion.

BARRIEROF150YEARS

The then,RedemptoristFathers, instretchingoutahandto non-Catholicsareopeningthe waytoabetterunderstandingbetweenCatholicandProtestant inBelfast.Theyarebreaking downabarrierthattheyears haveerected-abarrierthathas keptmenfromknowingtheir fellowmen;abarrierbehind whichfearandhatredcould feedonignoranceandgrow dailystronger.Itmaybemany yearsbeforethebarrierfinally falls-ithastakenacenturyand ahalftoraiseittoitspresent height-buttheworkhasbeen begun.

Thefablemayyetwina "happyending."Hissisat freedom,under510,000bail, pendingappealtotheU.S. CourtofAppealsandthen,if necessary,totheU.S.Supreme Court.

HIGHADVOCACY

Ifthecasereachesthehighest tribunal,AssociateJustices FelixFrankfurterandStanley F.Reedcanscarcelyhavethe facenottodisqualifythemselves.Tothecountry'sastonishment,bothdescendedfrom theirloftyspheretotestify,in thefirsttrial,ascharacterwitnessesforHiss.Theydidnot venturetorepeatthescandal athissecondarraignment.

ThatwouldleavetheultimatefateofAlgerHissinthe lapsofamajorityoffourout ofsevenJustices,allofwhom wereRooseveltorTrumannominees.Championsofthefortyfive-year-oldstatesmancount ontheWhiteHousetoswingat leasttwomagistratestohis support.TheyareTruman's latestappointees,ThomasC. ClarkandShermanMinton.

Itwouldthenbenecessaryto convinceonlytwomoreJustices,amongtheremainingfive, thatsomeloopholeortechnicalitywasavailableforpalliatingareversalofthejuryfinding.

During1938acourierfor Sovietespionage,Whittaker Chambers,recantedtheMarxist creedandwentintohidingfrom theparty'svengeance,witha shotgunbesidehimasheslept. Hehastestifiedthathebesought Hiss,whomhehadmetin1934, tojoininthebreak;butthat Hiss,intears.protestedthathe couldneverdeserttheCommunistaltar. HorrifiedbytheRussoGermannon-aggressionpactannouncedonAugust24,1939, Chambersmadeafullconfessiontoajournalist,IsaacDon Levine,whohadfoughtagainst CommunismsincetheBolshevik revolutionof1917.Levinetook ChamberstotheWhiteHouse. Abiographyinthe1947-49 Who'sWho,whichwaspreparedandproofreadbyHishimself,givesthetimeasJanuary, 1945.TheStateDepartment's annualforthatyearsetsthe dateasMarch19.ninedaysafterHissreturnedfromthe Crimea.Wilsonwasappointed AmbassadortoTurkeyonJanuary27.TwodaysearlierHiss hadboardedtheplaneforYalta.

Achesonwastorewardwith highposts. Theyhadhitontheunnaturalschemeofdestroyingthe pro-AmericancauseinChina anderectingCommunistrulein itsstead.Theprogrammewas crownedwithvictorylastyear throughtheconquestofChina byRedStararmies,which weretrained,equipped,anddirectedbytheSovietUnion.

PLOTTINGCHINA'SRUIN Stettiniusrecordsfrankly thathispolicyatYaltawasto promoteacoalitionoftheNationalistandCommunistparties inChina.ButhisbookdisclaimsallStateDepartmentresponsibilityforthe"secret agreement"underwhichPresidentRooseveltmadeitcertain thatRussiawouldcontrolManchuriaandeventuallyallChina.

Thetermswereexploredin MoscowpriortoYalta,itis maintained,byAmbassadorW. AverellHarrimanasarepresentativenotofStatebutofthe WarDepartment.Itispossible thatStetiniuswasunawareof allthatwasoccurringbehind thescenesinhisjurisdiction. ThepointisthatHisswasina positiontobethoroughlyfamiliarwiththeprogrammeof "Stilwellism"anditsauthors, whoweretoilinginChinaand Washingtonforthedownfallof ChiangKai-shek.

Alogicalcandidateforchoice asfourthdelegatewasDr. StanleyK.Hornbeck,thedepartment'sveteranexperton Orientalmatters.Hehadlived fouryearsinChinaasaninstructoringovernmentcolleges, hadbeenchiefofthedepartment'sDivisionofFarEasternAffairs,andatthisperiod wasspecialadviseronpolitical relationstotheSecretaryof State.

Anotherstrongpossibility wasEdwinC.Wilson,director ofthenewandrisingOfficeof SpecialPoliticalAffairs.Oneof theunlikeliestcandidateswas languishingunknowninthe department'smiddlebracketas anadvisertoWilson,andwho didnotbecomeWilson'sdeputy untilNovember.

YOUNGCINDERELLA

YetitwastoHisstheobscurethatthecovetedassignment fell.Tounderstandhowand whythesurpriseappointment cametopass,itisnecessaryto glanceateventsinthedepartmentduringthecriticalmonths betweenSeptember,1944,and theopeningoftheYaltaConferenceonFebruary4,1915.

Duringthisintervalboth HornbeckandWilsonwere madetovanishfromHiss's path,theformerthroughanappointmentasAmbassadortothe Netherlands,andthelatter throughasimilarmissionto Turkey.Itmaybeaskedwhetherthearmofcoincidence couldstretchsofar.AdolfBerle 0 accompaniedHornbeckand Wilsonintolimbo,beingharriedoutofdiplomaticlifeby wayofayear'sdemotiontothe AmbassadorshipinBrazil. Berlewasregardedasadang-erouscharacterbecausehewas knownnottobecountedamong those100percentloyaltothe SovietUnion.Hehadventured tosuggestthatin1944Russia waspursuing"averyaggressivepolicy,notatallinlinewith thekindofco-operationeveryonewashopingfor,"andto propose"aclear-cutshowdown now,whentheAmericanpositionisstrongest."

NOHERETICS

Hornbeckwassuspectedof entertaininghereticalnotions. Itwouldneverdotohaveso "unreliable"abeingatYalta. Wilson,whosecareerhadbeen

Ifso,Stettiniushimselfwas notpermittedtolearnofthe device.InhisbookonYalta, RooseveltandtheRussians,he invariablyidentifiesHissas -deputydirector"ofOSPA.

Duringtheperiodinquestion, theactiveheadoftheState DepartmentwasStettinius.are-

InOctober,1944,Harriman andMajorGeneralJohnR. Deane,militaryattache'in Moscow,hadaninterviewwith StalinabouttheFarEast.They learnedwithconsternationthat therehadbeenanominous changeinStalin'sattitude.

DuringOctober,1943,he promisedSecretaryHull,asa matterofcourse,withoutahint ofterms,thatRussiawould jointhewaragainstJapanat thefirstpracticablemoment.

Thepledgewasrepeatedto PresidentRooseveltamonth lateratTeheran.NowStalin grumbledthattermswould havetobesettledandagreementsmadewithChinaifRussiawastoentertheJapanese conflictthreemonthsafterthe endofwarinGermany.

PANICOVERJAPAN

TheMarshalbehavedasif spiesinAmericahadinformed himofanunbelievablewindfall.Truthtosay,thePresident'smilitaryadvisers-GeneralsMarshallandArnold,and AdmiralsLeahyandKing-had beensmittenwithblindpanic overthewarwithJapanand wereusingenormouspressure tostampedePresidentRooseveltintopurchasingRussianinterventionatanycostwhatsoever.

TheFestivalthisyearfollowscloselythepatternsetlast year.TheorganisingbodyistheTheatreCouncilofW.A., thevenueistheAssemblyHall,theFestivaliscompetitive, andeightbodiesaretakingpart.

Admittedlythebodiesarenot quitethesame.TheQPlayers havedroppedoutandtheMercuryPlayershavecomein;the TheatreCouncilitselfisdeferringproductionofitsprizewinningplay,buttheTherry Societyhasenteredthelists.

TheopeningoftheFestival thisyearwasmarkedbyapretheatrecocktailpartyattheKing EdwardHotel.Manywell-known identitiesinlocaltheatrewere present,togetherwithdignitaries ofStateandlocalgovernment.

GarrickClub'sSuccessfulComedy

TheGarrickClubhasmadea strongbidforFestivalhonours byturninginarattlinggood performanceof-Laburnum Grove.-anotherofPriestley's plays.Theperformancetook placeintheAssemblyHallon Tuesday,May13.Itwasthe secondplayoftheFestival.

"LaburnumGrove"isafamily piece,dependingforitssuccess onthedegreeofskillwithwhich theactorscanassumethecorpor, ateaspectofafamilywhilststill retainingtheirindividualdifferences.Therequisiteskillwillbe reflectedinthecreationofa pleasantairofdomesticity throughwhichcross-currentsof opinioncanhurtleharmlessly. Therewillbeplentyofquiet humourinthefamilycircleenvisagedbyPriestley,andloyaltieswhicharenotsomuchexpressedasunderstood.Thisis amilieuwhichJ.B.Priestley understands,andinwhichhe workswithouttheoffenceoccasionedbyhislatersalliesintosocialproblemsforwhichhehas nosolution.

PlOtSuspended Comedymakesitsownlaws. Outstandingwastheworkof CalderCrowtherasGeorgeRadfern.Graduallyheinstalledhimselfinourmindsasarealperson,andoneforwhomwehad alotofsympathy.Thiswasa keyrole-andplayedwithconspicuoussuccesssomeyearsago bythelateJamesOttawayin theRepertoryClub'sproduction. Mr.Crowtherheldtheplaytogethermorethananyothersingle player.Hisportaitwascompoundedofanicemixtureof easeandinitiative.

DonaldLongsonasBernard Baxleyhadtoomuchinitiative andnorestraint.Hebroughta musicalcomedyflavourtohis partandwas'oftenover-acting. Helookedfartooyoungand behavedinfartoofrolicsomea mannertoheconvincingasa manwhosesoleclaimtofame existedonhisachievements"out East."Nobodyinthecastwas somuchoutofcharacterashe. Hiswifewasverycapably playedbyRobertaDevenish.She

The1950DramaFestival,thesecondpostwarfestivalin Perth,gotawaytoagoodstartonSaturdaynightwhena packedhousewitnessedthefirstoffering-"AnInspector Calls,"byJ.B.Priestley,presentedbytheAcademyof TheatreArts.

TheFestivalthisyearfollowscloselythepatternsetlast year.TheorganisingbodyistheTheatreCouncilofW.A., thevenueistheAssemblyHall,theFestivaliscompetitive, andeightbodiesaretakingpart.

Admittedlythebodiesarenot quitethesame.TheQPlayers havedroppedoutandtheMercuryPlayershavecomein;the TheatreCouncilitselfisdeferringproductionofitsprizewinningplay,buttheTherry Societyhasenteredthelists.

TheopeningoftheFestival thisyearwasmarkedbyapretheatrecocktailpartyattheKing EdwardHotel.Manywell-known identitiesinlocaltheatrewere present,togetherwithdignitaries ofStateandlocalgovernment.

"LABURNUMGROVE"

GarrickClub'sSuccessfulComedy

TheGarrickClubhasmadea strong-bidforFestivalhonours byturninginarattlinggood performanceof"Laburnum Grove,"anotherofPriestley's plays.Theperformancetook placeintheAssemblyHallon Tuesday,May23.Itwasthe secondplayoftheFestival.

"LaburnumGrove"isafamily piece,dependingforitssuccess onthedegreeofskillwithwhich theactorscanassumethecorporateaspectofafamilywhilststill retainingtheirindividualdifferences.Therequisiteskillwillbe reflectedinthecreationofa pleasantairofdomesticity throughwhichcross-currentsof opinioncanhurtleharmlessly. Therewillbeplentyofquiet humourinthefamilycircleenvisagedbyPriestley,andloyaltieswhicharenotsomuchexpressedasunderstood.Thisis amilieuwhichJ.B.Priestley understands,andinwhichhe workswithouttheoffenceoccasionedbyhislatersalliesintosocialproblemsforwhichhehas nosolution.

PlOtSuspended Comedymakesitstownlaws. Inthehandlingofaplotwhich isatallpaintssubservientto hismainpurpose,theplaywright hasnotfelthimselfunderthe necessityofexplainingawaydifficulties.ThushowPoliceSetgentMorrisknewthatGeorge Radfernwasgoingonhistravels isnottold,norisanyattempt madetosupplyananswerfor thelargerquestionsofwhatis eventuallygoingtohappento Radfern.Thetriumphofright overwrong,orvice-versa,isnot considered,and,happily,theactinginthisplaywassogoodthat wedidnotfeelthatwehadbeen cheatedbysuspensionoftheplot.

CompetentActing

Outstandingwastheworkof CalderCrowtherasGeorgeRadfern.Graduallyheinstalledhimselfinourmindsasarealperson,andoneforwhomwehad alotofsympathy.Thiswasa keyrole-andplayedwithconspicuoussuccesssomeyearsago bythelateJamesOttawayin theRepertoryClub'sproduction. Mr.Crowtherheldtheplaytogethermorethananyothersingle player.Hisportaitwascompoundedofanicemixtureof easeandinitiative.

DonaldLongsonasBernard Baxleyhadtoomuchinitiative andnorestraint.Hebroughta musicalcomedyflavourtohis partandwasoftenover-acting. Helookedfartooyoungand behavedinfartoofrolicsomea mannertobeconvincingasa manwhosesole(himtofame existedonhisachievements"out East."Nobodyinthecastwas somuchoutofcharacterashe. Hiswifewasverycapably playedbyRobertaDevenish.She

earlyestablishedasuperiority whichrarelyfaltered.Shedisplayedakeeninsightintothe nuancesofcomedyasexpressed invoiceandfacialgesture.

ElsieRadfernwasinterpreted quietlyandnottofulleffectby MargaretTanner.Ashermother,WinifredFieldgrewin statureastheplayprogressed. NoelTannerwasadequateas HaroldRuss.CedricGartland somewhatunderplayedDet.InspectorStack;hewasnotaltogetheratease.LenGibbonsand HarryBettscompletedthecast.

ThedeathtookplaceinKalgoorlierecentlyofaGoldfields identitywhowashighlyrespectedandwellknownforher charitableworkduringherlong stayontheGoldfields.Shewas MargaretGertrudeMarshall, aged84,whofirstcametoKalgoorlieintherushthatfollowed thediscoveryofgoldatthefoot ofMt.CharlottebyPaddy Hannan.

Mrs.Marshall,whoaccomp- aniedherhusband,aminerat BrokenHill,totheEastern Goldfields,firstlived,likeother couplesatthattime,undera canvasawningsupportedby fourposts.Liketheotherwomen whocametotheFieldsinthose bygonedays,shesufferedthe hardshipsandrigoursofthose timesandremainedhereuntil hersuddenandunobtrusive deathinabuildingthatwas onceusedasaprivatehospital some50yearsago.

Mrs.Marshallwillberememberedbymanyforherge- nerosityandherworkforthe Church.Hergiftswereoften andfreelygiven,andthealtar railsandsanctuarylampatSt. Mary'sChurchwillremaina lastingmonumenttohername. WhenthefirstCatholicchurch inKalgoorliewasdestroyedby acyclone.Mrs.Marshallrenderedvaluableassistanceby donatingallthepewsforthe newchurch.Shewasalsoa greatfriendoftheSistersof theOrderofSt.Joseph.Until aboutsevenyearsago,whenold agemadeitimpossibleforher tocarryon,shehelpedtocollectdonationsforforeignmissions.

Mrs.Marshallwaseverready toassisttheold,andmanya pioneerobtainedshelteratthe campsadjoiningherhomefor thepaymentofanominalsum ofmoney.Withtheaidofloans shehelpedmanyotherstostart businessesornewventures.

BornatUndalya,inSouth Australia,thethirddaughterof afarmer,Mrs.Marshall,shortly afterherarrivalontheFields' workedfirstasalaundressand housekeeperataprivatehospitalrunbyMatronMeechamat 32Parkstreet,Kalgoorlie.After thematron'sdeathshepurch- asedtherfropertyandbuilt campswhichwereletoutas flats.Shelivedatthisaddress tillthetimeofherdeath.
