AMSTERDAM,Netherlands,Jan.26.-WhiletheConstitutionoftheUnitedStatesofIndonesiaproclaimsreligiousfreedom,thereisneverthelessmuchanxietyamong Catholicmissionaries,accordingtowordreceivedhere.One causeforthisconcernisthethreatofa"holywar"onthe populousislandofJava,wherealonethereare500,000 Catholics.

Inthefirstplace,theIslam religionhadalwaysbeen'favouredbytheDutchasfarasthe nativeswereconcerned,although,ethnologistssay,itis wrongtoregardtheIndonesians asanIslamicpeople.

ThereissmallMoslemgroup whichregardsreligiousfreedom favourably,butthesearecalled hereticsbythefanaticDarulIslams.TheDarulgroup,accordingtoIndonesiansources,is nowaccusedofattemptingtoset upanIslamstateinWestJava withthehelpofCapt.Westerling,renegadeNetherlandsarmy officer,whoisleadingaforceof 10,000inrebellion.

Usingup_to-datewarequipment,Westerling'sarmyinvadedBandoeng,andcutcay rail communicationsbetweentheIndonesiancapital,Jacarta,and Bandoeng.Thesituationbrought aboutthethreatofanall-out war guerillasagainsttheWesterling bytheIndonesianRepublic.

Indonesia'smostnumerous groupofMoslems,knownasthe Masjumi,cannotbereliedupon, accordingtoothersources.At arecenteducationcongress, theyattemptedtomakethe teachingofIslamobligatoryin allIndonesianschoolsbecause beliefinGodisincorporatedin

theConstitution.Themotion wasrejected.However,thisis notaguaranteeforthefuture. UndertheConstitutionpublic schoolsaretoprovidereligiousinstructionaccordingtothe wishesofparents.Private schoolshavethesamerightsas publicschoolsandfreedomof teachingisguaranteed.

Butwhatisthepractice?If aremoterajahorsomeother islands,whichstretchnearly 3,000milesfromthePacificto theIndianOcean,shouldviolate theseprovisions,appealstothe centraladministrationwill,indeed,beverydifficult.

Indonesia'sreligiousfreedom andotherrepublicanmeasures arethefruitsoftheactivitiesof theintelligentsia,andnotasyet thecrowningconvictionofa slowlygrowingpublicopinion. Yet,ithasbeenobvioustomany IndonesiansthatCatholicmissionarieswereneverthebanner bearersofanynation,noteven theNetherlands,butexclusively oftheKingdomofGod.

TheworkofFatherVan Lieth,S.J.,afterWorldWarI., inpreachingindependenceto theIndonesians,willneverbe forgotten.Andeversince,Ca- tholicmissionarieshavebeen fightingforindependencefromtheNetherlandsbesidesthe

equalityofraces.TheconsecrationoftheMostRev.Albert Soegijapranata,VicarApostolic ofSemarang,asBishopshowed thenativesthatintheeyesof Godall,racesareequal.The missionariesremainedattheir poststhroughoutthedangerous yearsoftheindeepndencecon_ flict,doingtheirbesttoeducate anativeclergy, Thereare,dangerstoCatholicismbesidesthecontentionsof theMoslems.TheIndonesians, lookingtotheOccidentfororientationwithoutscrutinisingthe deepervaluesofWesterncivilisation,mayfallfrompaganism intoneo-paganism.FreemasonryhasmoreinfluenceinIndonesiathaninHolland,andis responsibleforRuchopposition toCatholicism.Chaosmaypave thewayforCommunism,butit ishopedthatNationalismand theRepublicwillbeableto maintaincivilpeaceand,ifthe rightsofmanareassured,the CatholicChurchwillbeableto goonwithhertaskofwinning souls.

Inalettertothepublication, "NewsfromJava,"issuedin thiscountry,BishopPeterWillekens,VicarApostolicofJacarta,wrotethattheCatholic missions,duringthelastfour yearsoftheindependencefight,maintainedthattheirworkwas supronational;thattheydidnot cometodefendmaterialinterests,buttospreadtheKingdom ofGod.AndoneprominentnativeRepublicanhassaid:"I haveseenwithmyowneyes howEuropeanmissionariesare obeyinganIndonesianBishop (BishopSoegijapranata)."

Callingattentiontothefact thattheadversariescfthe Churchemploytheorganizationaltechniqueextremelywell, "oftenmakingofitthemost usefulweapontobindtothemselvesandsubvertthepopular masses,"theHolyFatherdeclaredthat"Catholicsmust understandthiscomplex profoundphenomenonofthese times,andmustlearntomake evengreateruseoftheadvantagesoforganizationallife."

ThePontiff'scontrastedsuch aCatholiceffortwiththe"bureaucraticorpurelyutilitarian" methodsofthosewhoaspire "onlytoasatisfyingsuccessin thefieldofearthlyinterests."

HesaidthattheCatholiceffortshouldbe"absolutelydifferentinitsspiritanditsforms fromthatquasi-mechanical coordinationimposedbydomineeringorfear-inspiring forces,which,extir.g,.ishing everyflameoflibertya.,personalimpulse,rendermenin..!apableoftruehuman,6,..eatness andspiritualprogress."

Ifalltheseconditionswere actuallyfulfilled,therewouldbe noprospectoffoodshortagefor Japan'spopulation.

Averycertainsymptomoftrueconversionofheartis thedesiretorepair,insofarasthiscanbedone,theravages ofsin.Itisthemarkofanhonestandsinceremanto wishtomakeuptotheMajestyofGodfortheoutrages committedaaginstHimandHislaw.Hencethepracticeof penancehasalwaysbeenaconcomitantofrepentanceinthe CatholicChurch.Nolongerdoweendurethevigorous penitentialpracticesofpast buttheveryleniencyof ourowntimesshouldinspireCatholicstoobservewith completefidelitytheChurch'srtluirementsregardingfascingandabstinence.Themoregeneroussoulwilladd somethingextraforhisownaccount.Butvaluableand necessaryasexternalpenanceis,theinteriordisciplineof thesoulisyetmoreimperative.Amanmustguardtheuse ofhissenses(especiallyoftheeyes),andthevagariesofhis emotionsandfeelings,ifhesincerelydesirestoavoidthe occasionsofsin.Forunlesstherampartsaremanned,how shalltheheartofthecitadelreposeinpeace?Letusmake thisLentthecoreoftheHolyYear,thetrainingground fromwhichwemaymarchuntotheacquirementof"substantialdevotion."

Recentlytherepassedaway oneofAustralia'sleadingcitizens-adevoutmemberofthe CatholicChurchandagenerous -andlife-longfriendofthe ChristianBrothers,especially thoseengagedinorphanage work.Itisjustaquarterofa centuryagothathebecameespeciallyinterestedinthedevelopmentofClontarf,andno benefactorintheStatehasdone moretoliftClontarffromits pioneeringstagestowhatitis today-oneofthemostmodern institutionsofitskindinAustralia.Thedeceasedhadno vaguenotionsregardingthe technicaleducationofyouth,nor thedisciplinenecessaryforsuch training.Withthisendin view,hewasoftheutmostassistancetotheBrothers;hewas alwaysathandadvisingandinstructingtheboysinthebuildingoftheirownschoolsand workshops,andhewellunderstoodthatconstructionalwork fascinatesboys,andinmaking thechangeoveranddeveloping Clontarfintoanup-to-date "Boys'Town"wasperhapsone ofthedeceased'smostcherishedinterestsinCatholicactivities.

Weshouldbeveryhappy,then, toknowthatGodcandotous onlygood.Strangeasitmay seem,therearepossiblymore prayersofferedwhichseemto beleftunansweredthanthere arewhatwemightbeinclined tocallsuccessfulprayers.That is,ofcourse,becauseourideas ofwhatwerequireforouradvancement,eitherspiritualor material,aresotingedwith humanselfishness. PRINCIPALAIM

Now,ifitseemsfromtheforegoingthatprayerisveryoften uselessbecausewearesoprone towishanddesirethewrong thing,Ihavegivenyouawrong impression,orperhapsitmight bemorecorrecttosaythatyou havestartedoffwiththewrong impression,namely,thatprayer isalwaysapetitionforsomethingwhichwecannotobtain bynaturalmeansinnormalcircumstances.Thiswouldbea verymistakenideaofprayer, whichreallymeansthatwe,His creatures,rememberGodour Creatorandourdutytowards Him.Wearehumanbeings, veryhumaninsomeways,who haveaduty,anhonourabledebt totrytoleadsupernaturallives, i.e.,todirectourliveswiththe ultimateendinview,namely, thatonedaywereturntothe sourcefromwhichwecame:in otherwords,thataswecome fromGod,weareintendedby Hisdivineprovidencetogoto HimandtolivewithHimforall eternity.Itisn'talwayseasy torememberthat,norisiteasy tosodirectourlivesthatwe shalldeservetolivewithGod foralleternity.Whenwerememberourdestiny,andwhen wetrytoguideourearthlylives asapreparationfortheheavenlyexistence,thenwepray.To rememberGodistopray,to thinkofHimistopray,tomanageourlivesaccordingtothat memoryandthosethoughtsis toprayeffectively.Butthatis hard,impossibleeven,without Hishelp,whichwecallHis grace,andthatisreallywhatis intendedwhenJesusChristin_ vitesustoaskinorderthatwe mayreceive,toknockinorder thatitshallbeopenedtous,to seekinorderthatwemayfind. morestrengthandcourageto serveHim.Otherthingswe need,too,but"seekyefirstthe KingdomofGodandallthese thingsshallbegiventoyou."In ourprayersweneedasenseof proportion,asenseofperspec- tivewhichhas,notthislifeand itsfleetingvanities,butthe eternityoftheBeatificVision foritsbackground.Doesall thismeanthatallotherpetitions areunworthy?Bynomeans. Wecannotseparateournatural livesfromtheirsupernatural destination,andsoGod,asit were,wouldcoaxustorememberthatdestinationbyinviting ustoprayforwhatweneed, eveninthematerialway,aswe makeourprogressalongthe road.

LastEasterSunday,Father PatrickPeytonachievedforthe fourthtimethealmostimpossible,afullhour"forfree"ona nationalradionetwork.Furthermore,hisprogramme,featuring17topHollywoodstars whoseaggregatetimewasworth thousandsofdollars,costhim nexttonothing,wroteMartha MartinintheNewYorkSunday News.

FatherPeyton'sstorybegins nearthevillageofCarracastle inCountyMayo.Therehewas thefifthof11childrenbornto JohnandMaryGillardPeyton. TheelderPeytonworkedhard onhislittlefarm,andhiswife workedequallyhardintheir cottage,buttheircombinedeffortscouldn'tvanquishpoverty andthePeytonchildrenlooked towardScranton,thatwonderful placeinAmericawhitherother PeytonsandGillardshademigratedduringandafterthefamine.

In1920,BridgetandMary sailedforScranton.In1923, Nellie.Andin1928,Tomand Pat,then19.Tomgotajobin themines.Patworkedasaday laboureruntilhebecamea churchjanitor.Hemightbe thereyethadnotthelateMons. PaulKellystoppedtotalkwith therobust,blonde"Irisher"and foundconcealedbeneatha brogueandablushbothakeen andactivemind.Monsignor Kellysenttheyouthtohigh school.

WhilestillafreshmanPat wasimpressedbyamissionary seekingrecruits.Tom,too,was impressed,asweretheirsisters, oneworkingasadressmaker andtheothertwoasdomestics

"Wewillhave,"Patassured him.Patwenttothemissionaryandtoldhisstory.Themissionarywaswontohiscause. Scholarshipswerearrangedand thePeytonbrotherswereenrolledforthreeyearsofhighschoolstudyinMoreauseminaryatSouthBend,Ind.

TomandPatkeptstep,were graduatedfromtheseminary together,servedtheirnovitiate yeartogether,andafterfour yearsatNotreDameweregraduatedtogetherin1937,andtogetherbecameAmericancitizens.Afterthattheyweresent tooneofthemissionhousesin Washington,D.C.,formore study.

Thenbighealthy-lookingPat fellvictimtotuberculosis.In February,1939,hewascarried awayfromhisbookstoa Washingtonhospital.Thirteen weekslaterhewasmovedtoa hospitalinSouthBend.There doctorsfoundwaterinhislungs. Theytriedartificialpneumothoraxtreatments.Hedidnot improve.Therewastalkofcollapsingthelungsbytheremoval ofseveralribs.

"BeforeIcanconsent,"said thepatient,"Imustaskyouto talktothedoctorwhofirst treatedmeinWashington."

StillthinkingonlyofreachingCatholics-hewasto broadenhisplanslater-Father Peytonhadvisionsofanational radioprogrameforhiscause. Hemademanytripstotalkto executivesofthemajornetworks,but,withoutmoneyto offer,hereceivednoencouragement.

"Nothinginitforus,"aMutualexecutivetoldhimbluntly. FatherPeytonhadaninspiration.

"Wouldyougivemeanhour onMother'sDayifyouhada bigmoviestarontheprogrammeandifyoudidn'thaveto payforthestar?"askedthevisitorwiththewinningsmile. Theradioexecutiverosetothe baitonthatdayearlyin1945. Hedidn'tevenask,"Whatmovie star?"

That'swhenFr.Peyton's dreamcametrue.Hewasgiven onehouronanationwide hookup.Afewdaysbeforethe programmewastogoonthe air,Germanysurrendered.ThatSunday-Mother'sday,1945wasproclaimedadayofthanksgivingforvictory.

Theprogrammebroughtan avalancheofapprovalfromCatholics,JewsandProtestants. Telegramsandletterspouredin requestingthattheprogramme berepeated.Mutualradioexecutives,uptothattimeapprehensive,agreedthatFr. PeytoncoulddoitagaininDecember.

"Whynoteveryweek?"asked thepersistentpriest,pointingto thedonationswhichhadpoured in,donationswhichwouldpaytechniciansandorchestra.The executiveshookhishead,expl- ainingthatintheU.S.,where Protestantsareinthemajority, aCatholichourwouldnotcarryintoenoughAmericanhumusto makethegiftoftimejustifiable. ButFr.PeytonwouldnotaNept thisdecision.

"Ifyoucouldworkupapregrammeofprayerforall faiths-" tentatively.theexecutivesuggested Thepriestthought hard.

"PrayeristhelanguagebetweenGodandmai,hesaid finally."Familypraverisforall faiths.Thefamilywhichprays togetherstaystogether.'

Theexecutivenoddedsolemnly.Well,seewhatyoucan do.Rememtser,wehaven'tany moneytoputintothis.But youcanswingit-getusstars free-Mutualwillgiveyou halfanhoureveryweek."

ThelattergentlemanhasapparentlydiscoveredthatSpain is"mortgagingitsnationalgold reserve"tobuywheat.Hashe everheardofwhathasreally happenedtothatreserve-once amongthemostsubstantialin Europe?Itwas"grabbed"by theRedsinthecivilwar-along withalltheotherlootthey couldlayhandsonandtransmittedacrossthePyreneesto "partsunknown,"butnotbeyondguess.IfIrememberrigh- tly,theUralgoldminesinRussiawereannouncedtohave been aboutunusuallyproductive thattime!Anyhow,Francostartedwithnogoldat all-anditisnotverylikely thathehasmuchto"mortgage" inbuyingwheatnow!

THEINEPTITUDEOF DEMOCRATICPOLICY

Itisimpossibletosetthese twocasessidebysidewithout exposingtheshamefulandabsurdcharacteroftheAttleeGovernment'sSpanishpolicy-a policyinspiredbythepurest ideologicalbigotry,inclearcontradictiontoBritishnational interests,andtotheneedsof Westernsecurity.Theattempt tojustifythedecisionbythe appealtoU.N.ismerelyfarcical. Everyoneknowsthemethodsby whichthat"moralgesture"was obtained;andtheBritishGovernmenthasshown,inthe caseofPeking,justhowmuch itcaresforU.N.endorsement ofitsnationalpolicies-even thoughinthiscasethequestion of"recognition"involvesthe righttoapermanentseatonthe SecurityCouncil.

Itisbadenoughthatinternationalpoliciesshouldbebased ontheexpediencyof"power politics"withoutregardtoany codeofmorality-asNaziGerm_ any'swereandSovietRussia's are.ButatleastMachiavellianismisunderstandablebecauseitispurposive.Agreat partofthepoliciesofthe"democracies"to-day-inregardto Spainandothermattersmakes nosensewhatever,fromthe pointofviewof"real-politik" orfromthatofcommonhonesty.

Itisapparentlybasedonasort ofideologicalprejudice,private interests,fearand"wishful thinking,"inmenwhosechief desireissomehowtoactwithout committingthemselvesirrevocablyin wantanydirection.They toholdoffthemenaceof Communismwithoutcomprom-isingthemselvesinacrusadefor Christianliberties,whichis profoundlyrepugnanttotheir fixedsecularistprejudices.

THEUNCERTAINTRUMPET Theyraisetheir"uncertain trumpet"toblowacautious blastoflimiteddefiance,while explainingelaboratelyhow dangerousitistobetooresolute anduncompromising,andhow necessarynottobecommitted inthecauseofthosewhohave gotinto resistancetroublethroughreal againstoverwhelming force.

Itisunhappy,ofcourse,that thisunfortunateconflicthas developedtothepointatwhich theyareobligedtorecognisethe hostilityofthosewhohavebeen insultingandabusingthemfor years,savagelypersecutingtheir friends,andenslavingthenationstowhomtheypromised liberation.Butitwouldbe dreadfultocarrythethingto thepointof"purgingout" traitorsandhalf-traitorous"appeasers,"seriouslysupporting "resistance"elementsbehindthe IronCurtain,andadmittingas comradesinarmsthosewhoare guiltyoftheoffenceofhaving knownandfoughtthecommon enemytooearlyandtoosuccessfully.Yousee,sucha"volte face"wouldbevirtuallyan

Finally,whenallissaidand done,wejustcan'tbelievethat realitiesarerealities.andthere isnowayofgettinground,or over,orunderthembytinetalk andgesturesandofferstohelp inequippingourenemiesand solvingtheireconomicproblems!Wecan'tbelievethatall thatlovelySocialistguffabout thenewworldandthenew democracyisbeingusedtocoverupapower-policyasnakedlybarbaricasHitler's.anda slave-systemfarmorecomplete andruthless.Theproofsare there,andareinexpungeable;thefactshaveevenbeencited bytheBritishandAmerican leadersthemselvesinresponse tothecynicalliesoftheother side;butthehabitofnotfacing realitiesistooingrained,and thesituationisstilldealtwith inapiecemealfashion,while theleadersofdemocracyclingdesperatelytotherottenragsof yesterday'sillusionsanddiscreditedpolicies,lestthesight oftheirnakednessshouldlose themthesupportofthepublic opiniontheyhavehelpedtodeludeandcorrupt.

Withinyoukneelatthecradle oftheFranciscanOrder,the MotherHouseofallFranciscans, nomatterwhatruletheyfollow.Itisblackenedbythe smokeofcountlesscandles.Here istheoriginofthePortiuncula Indulgence,forthefestivalof the"Perdona,"thePardon,pilgrimsflocktothisholyshrine. Hereisoneoftheholyspotson earthforSt.Francishashad morebiographersthan'anyof thesaints,aproofofthewide spreaddevotiontohisideals. St.Francisspentthelastweeks ofhislifeinasmallhutwhich isnowthechapeloftheTransitus.HerehedictatedhisTestament,givinghislastcommandmentofmutuallove.While hisbrethrensangtheCanticle oftheSun,"dwellingonthe verseswhichpraisesGodfor "SisterDeath,"St.Francis'last wordswere,"Welcome,Sister Death:Sheistomethegateof life."

ItwasatPortiunculathatSt. ClarewasclothedintheFranciscanhabit,andthusbeganthePoorClares.Onthewaytothe GardenoftheRosesyoupassby astatueofSt.Franciswitha bowlofrealroses,and,perched ontheedgearetwowhitedoves. Thehabitismadeofcloth,the faceofwood,andasyougaze youblink,forthedovesmove, changetheirfeet,andonlythen doyourealisetheyarealive. WhatanartisticsensetheseItalianspossess!IntheGarden oftheRosesthereisacharming group:St.Francisbendsdown totalktoayoungboy.It breatheshisloveofchildren.I alsolikethestatueoftheSaint sympathisingwithayounglamb thatwasbeingledtotheslaughterhouse.

IntheGardenoftheRoses aretreeswithoutthorns.Traditionsaysthatonenightinthe depthofwinterSt.Franciswas temptedinhiscell.Herushedintothegarden,threwoffhis meagrehabit,rolledhimselfin thesnow,andthrewhimself intoathornybush,rolled aroundwithinit,untilhisblood flowedfreely.Thethornbush wasablazewithrosesnext morning,andhasborneflowers eversince.

Communism,thescourgeof modernlife,wasquicktorecognisetheennoblingeffectof exaltingwomentoahighplace insociety;thereforeCommunistseverywhereattemptedto dragwomendowntothelevel ofmen-physically,socially, morally.Butthemoralequalityofwomanwithmanwould alwaysresultinherdegradation,saidthepreacher.

Speakingofthedomesticvirtues,FatherMcEvoysaidthata manwhowasdevotedtoa womancouldnotaffordtodo anythingwhichwasdishonourable.Hecouldnotbringshame anddisgraceonthosewhodependedonhim.Devotionto themotherandchildwasthe inspirationofallChristianvirtues.Itwenttothevery rootsofmorality.

"Themoralsofourdaydestroychastitynotonlyamong theunmarriedbutamongthe married,"saidFatherMcEvoy. "Christsetupamoralforall timebybeingbornofavirgin."

Heappealedtomembersof theHolyNameSocietytoremainsteadfastintheirloyalty toChrist."Wedonotsetout tobereformersofsociety,"he said."Wearemerelyholding fasttowhatwehave."

MembershipoftheHolyName Societywasaneffectivebrake onaman'slowernature.It actedasarestraint.Monthly confessionwasacheckona man'smorals.

Sunday,February12,wasaGodandOurLady.Atthesodaytoberememberedby manyofourLithuanian!migrantsandtheirnewfriends. Itwasthesecondanniversary oftheirIndependenceDay. At9.30a.m.alargenumber ofLithuanianNewAustralians wereassembledatSt.Patrick's Church,Havelock.Street.Rev. FatherDepiazzicelebratedHoly Massandpreachedaninspiring sermononthedutiesofallgood CatholicNewAustralians.He remindedthemthat,nowina freecountry,theycouldworship Godintheirownway. TheNewAustralianssangthe hymnsoftheircountry.The effectwaswonderful,thepowerfulvoicesofthemenblending perfectlywiththehigh,-sweet notesofthewomen'svoices.Especiallypoignantwasthehymn toOurLadyofPerpetualSuccour,askingguidanceandhelp intheirnewland.Almostall presentreecivedHolyCommunion.

Intheeveningamostpleasantsocialwasheldinthe SchoolHall,HavelockStreet. ThiswasprecededbyBenedictioninthechurch,conducted byFatherStinson.Thehymns werefaultlesslyrenderedby ourNewAustralians.Theser-

cialanexcellentbuffetsupper wasservedandfolksongsand choruseswereenjoyed.Madame RuthPamosiranienegavea shortaddressonthetrialsof Lithuania.

Rev.FatherStinsonwelcomed all,andMr.White,representing theCommonwealthDepartment, expressedhispleasureatthe goodworkbeingdoneandthe greatco-operationofFather StinsonandtheCatholicMigrationSociety, AlargenumberoftheregularattendantsatSt.Patrick's werepresent,andsoonwere fraternisingwiththeirnew friends.Invitationtohomes, visitstothepictures,anddifferentoutingswerebeingdiscussed. Alargeshareofthesuccess oftheeveningwasduetoMrs. Clements,presidentoftheVictoriaParkbranchoftheCatholicWomen'sLeague,whospeaks Lithuanianfluently,andisalwaysagoodfriendandhelper toournewpeople.

Mrs.Keenan,vice-president oftheC.W.L.,waspresent,and thesecretary,alsoMissMaureenDyson,migrationsocial worker,aswellasmanyothers, allanxioustobringnewandold monwaspreachedbyRev.Australiansintothebondsof FatherWorms,ontheloveoflastingfriendship.
