Youareperfectlycorrectin yourstatementthatwedonot permitourCatholicstogoto yourchurches.Wedonotfor,idthemtohearyourpointof view,thoughwedonothesitate towarnthemofthedanger whichtheyrun.Yousee,we areafraid:thevastmajorityof ourCatholics,ninety-ninepe: cent.,wouldnotbeaffectedby hearingyourpointofview,buta smallportionoftheonepercent, whoarenotadequatelytrained andwhosefaithisweak,mightbe affected.Wefrequently,inour sermons,tellourpeoplewhatyou holdaboutvariouspointsofthe teachingofChrist,butwedoso inordertopointouttothem, whereandhowyouarewrong. Thereareotherreasonswhywe donotpermitourCatholicsto attendyourservices,butIneed notdiscussthosewithyounow, asIthinkfromthewordingof yourletterthatyouonlywishto knowwhywedonotpermitthem tohearyourteachingandyour pointofview.

Thereisnodoubtbutthatthe bestwaytoarriveatthetruthis tohearmorethanoneside.When itisaquestionofarrivingatthe oneandonlytrueChurchfoundedbyChrist,thisnowadays,owingtotheenormousnumberof divergentreligiousdenominations,maybealife-longsearch formany.
Whenapersonisdefinitelyin possessionofthetruth,itisjust plainwasteoftime,togotohear
theotherpointofview,sincethe othersidemustbefalse,and thereisnothinggainedbylisteningtofalsehoodexcepttorefute it,orbringtheerringmanback tothetruth.Idonotwishto casaspersionsonthegoodfaith oftheexponentsoftheother side,buttheothersideoftruth iserror.Onceaman,forinstance,knowsthattheheartof theAustralianContinentisa vastdesert,hedoesnotfeel calledontoheartheotherside. Catholicsareinpossessionof thetrueteachingofChristOur Lord,yetyouaskwhywewillnot permitthemtolistentothe otherside.Wecouldnotin conscienceallowthemtogo wheretheymightruntheriskof acceptingastruewhatisreally false.Weknow,forinstancy, thatChristOurLordwastruly God,theSecondPersonofthe BlessedTrinitymademan,we naturallywillnotencourageour Catholicstogowheretheywill hearthiscalledinquestion,or evenopenlydenied.Catholics knowthatChristispresentin theBlessedEucharist,thatHeis bodilypresentundertheappearancesofeitherBreadorWine,afterthewordsofConsecration havebeenpronounced.Wecannotallowourpeopletogowhere thecontraryisopenlytaught. Notonlythat,butwedonotpermitthemtoattendlecturesor readbooks,inwhichsuchfalsehoodsareputforwardastrue, unlessthereisaverysoundreasonfortheirpresenceortheir reading,andthenwethinkEt
necessarytowarnthemofthe dangerofacceptingsuchdoctrines,andoflosingtheirfaith.
TheCatholicisamazedatthe attitudeofsomenon-Catholics whowanderfromtheChurchof EnglandtotheMethodist,and fromthePresbyteriantothe BaptistChurchonsuccessive Sundays.Heisastonishedatthe interchangeofpreachers,which sometimesispractisedbythese denominations.Thetruthmust besomewhere.Onceitisfound everythingelsemustbefalse. Suchawanderermustthinkthat thefirstthreearefalseifhegoes tothefourth.Yethewillnot hesitatetoreturntothefirst choiceifhehearsgoodreportsof theeloquenceandrhetorkal powersofthenewminister.
OneofthegreatevilsofReligiousthoughtto-dayisthefalse theorythatonereligionisas goodasanother,aslongasaman leadsagoodlife.OnlyonereligioncanbethereligionofChrist, allothersmustbefalse.The manorwomanwhoisnotaCatholicservesandworshipsGod inhisownway,buttheCatholic servesandWorshipsinGod's way.
Hearingdifferentsidesmay bringthepersonwhoisindoubt tothetrutheventually,butitis nousetotheCatholic,forheis notindoubt.Faithanddoubt areincompatible.TheCatholic isnotseekingthetruth,heis happilyinpossessionofit.

Theevening'sprogrammeopenedwiththe"Egmont"Overture. Thiswaswellexecuted,andthe onlyjarringnotewasthepre- ponderance,tothepointofextinctionofthebrassoverthe stringsinthefortissimopassages. Thiswastobeafeatureofall suchpassagesduringthenight,

Summingupthisyear'swork, therehasbeensomeimprovement intheplayingofthePerthSymphonyOrchestra,butithasnot liveduptothepromiseofthe firstfewconcertsoftheseason. ThereisnodoubtthatHenry Kripshasputsomegreatwork intotheensemble,butitmustbe dishearteningnottobeableto unleashthefullpoweroftheorchestrawithouthavingsome sectionsubmergedbecauseofinadequatenumbers.TheparsimoniousresponseoftheCivic FathersandtheStateGovernmenttotheclamourforapermanentorchestrawillputthe PerthSymphonywellbelowthe strengthofallbutHobart,but withpatienceourconductormay heabletobuildupabetterensemblein1949.

Accordingtoareportofoureveningcontemporary, thereisaheavydemandinPerthlibrariesandbookshops forreligiousbooks.Onecitybooksellersaidshewas "staggered"bytheirpopularity.Thetrend,however,was towardsnovelsofanescapistnature.Itmaybethatthe twothingsarebounduptogether,andthatpeople.are seekingtofindan"escape"fromthefearsandfutility,of modern'lifethroughreligion.Evenifthiswerethetruth, itwouldbenobadthing,formenhavecometotheknowledge,loveandserviceofGodthroughyetstrangerand moreunworthymotives.Moreover,"escapism"isnot ofitsnatureevil.Itisanillbusinessandmostdeleterious tocharacterformationtoseekasylumfromthecaresand responsibilitiesoflifewhichoughttobefacedandmastered.Butasregardsthespirituallife,escapeinsomeinstancesisnotmerelydesirablt,butimperative.AccordingtotheScriptureswearetofleefromtemptationasfrom thefaceoftheserpent.Andcertainlythereisnocourage,butafoolhardypride.inattemptingtowrestlewith temptationagainstfaithandchastity.
Hence,escapismissoundcounselinsomeinstances. Butifreligionweresoughtandembracedfromthatsole motive,itwouldnotemanateinanygreatdegreeofholiness,whichisitsraisond'etre.Hence,whileitisinterestingtospeculatewhethertheincreaseofinterestinreligiousliteraturebetokensagenuinereligiousrevival,itis ofconsummatedifficultytoarriveatacertainconclusion. Foronething,toogreataself-consciousnessregardingreligionisoftenenoughevidenceofspiritualdeterioration. Justasthenormalmanhardlyeverthinksorspeaksofhis health(exceptplatitudinousiy)whenheiswell,soanexcessiveconcentrationonreligionmaywellbeamorbid conditionItisundeniablethattheworldatlargeissuffering-fromaseriesofspiritualmalaises;itisequallycertainthatthefirstconditionofconversionandcureofevils whichspringfromprideisahumblerecognitionoftheir existenceasevils.Iftheappetiteforreligiousreadingisa symptomofthatessentialintrospection,itmaywellhethe beginningofreformandrevival.

However,fromtheCatholicaspect,therearenut manyreligiousbooksinthebookshopswhichcouldberecommendedunreservedly.Thetaintofmodernismis veryprevalentindeedamongthetheologyofourseparated brethren,andevenwherethereisnopositiveerror,there istheperilofthehalf-truth,whichisoftenworsethanthe lie.Itis,therefore,amootpointwhetheramanmaynot bebetteroffasa"goodpagan"thantobeconvertedtoa twisted(or,atbest,partial)versionofChristianity.For unlessthedoctrinesofChristareseenandheldintheir totality,theywillnotbeabletocompetewiththosepervertedphilosophieswhichdoofferatotalviewoflife. Indeedthereinliestheessenceofheresy-notsomuch inthatitteachesfalsedoctrineasthatitgivesafalseemphasisoradistortedperspective.Thatiswhyitisimperativetohaveatotal,orcatholicviewofChristianity.

Butifthepeopleofourcommunityarereallyturning avidlytoreligiousliterature,itbehovesusasCatholicsto seetoitthatourauthorsareproportionatelyrepresented ontheshelvesoflibrariesandbookshops.Itistobe doubtedwhethermanyproprietorswilfullyexcludeCatholicbooks.Theybuytosuitthepublicdemand,andif thatdemandisfortheheterodox,thenthatiswhatthe publicgets.Yetitisthesimplestthingintheworld forCatholicswhenpurchasingorborrowingbookstoenquirewhetherthetitlesofanyofourgreat,modernCatholicclassicsareinstock.Itisanapostolateofthevery firstimportance;itmakesnoextrademandsonone's timeortalents,nordoesitcallforanyformaiorganisation.ItisamethodofbringingtheChurch'smessageof hopeandsalvationtothatlargemassofnebulous-reliigousopinion(whichcharacterisesourcountry)which wecannotinconscienceneglect.

JERUSALEM,Sept.9.-The storyofanunusuallyimportant discoverymadetwoyearsagohas justcometolighthere.ItrelatestothefindingbyBeduin tribesmenofancientBiblical manuscriptsinacavenorth-west oftheDeadSea,inapartof Palestinewhichwasoncethe homeofagroupofpre-Christian monks,calledEssenes.
Theancientmanuscriptswere found,storedinearthernjars, carefullysealedwithpitch,and thuspreservedthrough2,000 years.

WhilethestatuewasinLourdes.thewarbrokeoutanditremainedthereuntilAugust28. 1943.Itthenresumeditstriumphaljourneyoverthousands ofmiles,fromvillagetovillage, fromonechurchtoanother,escortedbythefaithful,someof whommarchedbarefooted.recitingprayersandchantingcanticles.Manyconversionswere reportedduringthemissions preachedbythepriestswhoaccompaniedthestatue.Morethan 1,000,000personstookpartin Parisinthedifferentceremonies ofthe"GreatReturn"in1946.
