arereadytoapplaudthegiving ofone'slifeforanother.Now,as farasthedonorofhislifeis concerned,therecanbenothing tobegainedfromhisactinthis life.Tosacrificehimself,therefore,foranotherwouldbethe mostfoolishofactsiftherewere noGodtoapproveandreward. Finally,allmenaremeantfor happinessanddesireit.This desirecanbemetingreatmeasureinthislifeinthecertain hopeofunionwithGodinthe next.Takeawaythishopeand theweakandthesufferinghave onlyalifeofdespair.These remarks,are,asIhavealready stated,onlymeanttobeindicationsofsomeofthemeansby whichmencometotheknowledge ofGod
TheArgumentFromContingency
GODDOESEXIST
Now,letusattempta inureconclusivetypeofargument.Thisisanattempttoput intopopularlanguageanargumentwhich,ifIweretoputitin itstechnicalterms,wouldappear evenmoreabtruseandintricate thanwhatJ.amabouttosay.I dosointhehopethatifitloses anythinginforceitmaymake upforthatlossinclarity.You willseeforyourself.Undernu circumstances,isiteasytoput suchargumentsbothclearlyand brieflyatthesametime.Toput itfullywouldtakemuchmore timethanisatourdisposal.
Thisproofiscalled''TheArgumentfromContingency."It supposesafirstprinciplecalled the"PrincipleofSufficientReason,"whichmaybeenunciated asfollows:Everybeinghasa sufficientreasonforitself,i.e.,an explanationthatcansatisfythe mind.Thissufficientreasonis eitherinthethingitselforin anothag.Everybeingeither existsinitselforithashadits existenceconferreduponitby anotherbeing.Inthefirstcase, itiscalledaself-existentbeing; inthesecond,itissaidtobe contingentordependent.Itake ityouwillacceptthisprinciple. Itcanbejustified,buttodoso newwouldtaketoolongand wouldmakeratherdullanddifficultlistening.Ourmainlineof argumentwillbedifficultenough withoutlosingourselvesindigressions.
Ishallintroducetheprooffor God'sexistencebysayingthat somethingexists.Fromthe factthatsomethingexistswe concludetothefactthatsome hasalwaysexisted.Ido notmeanthatthesamethinghas alwaysexisted, butonlythat thereneverwasatimewhen therewasabsolute, nothingness. Thereasonforthisconclusionis thatitisimpossiblethatabeing shouldappearinexistencefrom purenothing. Sothen, going backinimaginationoverthe countlessyears, wefindalong seriesofbeings, andweknow thatweshallneverfindinthe remotepastadeepvoidofpure nothingness.
Now,beforecomingtothe proofofGod'sexistence,letus takeoneofthemanybeingsthat doexist,thecatsleepingnear thefire,forexample.Iknow
thedaythecatwasborn. 1 snowadaywhenitdidnot exist.Thisbeinghasnotalways existed;ithascomeintoexistence.Existence,therefore,is nutpartofthecat'snature,for ifitwasthenatureofthecatto exist,thiscatwouldnothave comeintoexistence,itwauld havealwaysexisted.Iwantyou is.thinkofthat,toturnthat pointoverquietlyinyourmind. Itisnotasophistry.Thecat exists,butitsoexiststhat't neednotexist.Existenceisnot partofthecatnature.Ifexistencewerepartofthecatnature, itwouldsoexistthatitmust exist.Therefore,thecatisnot anecessarybeing;itiscalleda contingentbeing,itreceivesexistence,athingwhichisdistinct fromitsnatureandwhichgives itactualbeing.
Now,briefly,fortheproofof God'sexistence.Allthingsin theuniversearesubjectto change.Whatissubjectto changehasnotexistenceaspart ofitsnature;otherwisebeing existencebynature,itcouldnot besubjecttochangebyreceiving existence.Thereforeallthevisibleuniverseanditspartsare subjecttochangeandarecontingent,ordependent.Whatis contingenthasnotinitselfa sufficientreasonforitsexistence,sinceitisnotpartofits naturetoexist.Thereforethere mustbe,distinctfromtheuniverseandallitsparts,asufficientreasonfortheexistenceof theuniverseandallitsparts. Thissufficientreasoncannotbe foundinsomeothercontingent beingforthesamereason.It mustbefound,therefore,ina Beingwhichisnotcontingent butnecessary,Whosenatureis existence.ThisBeingmustbe eternal,becauseitisinits naturetobe.Itmustbechangeless;otherwiseitwouldbecontingent.Itmustbeunique; otherwiseitwouldbelimitedand subjecttochange.Fromthe natureofthebeingswhichdependfromitforexistenceas fromthesourceoftheirbeing, weknowthatthisbeingmusthe intelligentandhavefreewill. Lastweekforthebenefitof "TruthSeeker,"WestPerth,we gaveoneofthewaysbywhich mencometotheknowledgeof God.Itiscalledtheargument fromdesignandisbasedonthe harmonyanddesignweseein nature.ThisharmonyanddesigncalledforaDesigner,and cannotbeexplainedbyblind chance.To-night,beforeproceedingtothemainargument,I shallverybrieflyoutlineanother argument,whichiscalledthe "MoralArgument."Itisbased ontheuniversalconscienceof mankind,whichpromptsusto obeywhatisrightandtoavoid whatiswrong.Thisobedience isultimatelydirectedtoaSu-
premeBeingwhomallarebound toobey.How,initsimmediate application,thisrighttoobedienceisdelegatedtoparentsand governmentsisanotherquestion, butitremainsquiteclearthat withoutaSupremeBeing,whom allareboundtoobey,Society couldnotbepreserved.Law regulatinghumanconductwould finally6ereducedtosubmission tosuperiorforce;mightalone wouldberight.Speakingat theJacobinClubinParisin1793, Robespierre,onthisverypoint, said:"IfGoddidnotexist,it wouldbenecessarytoinvent Him."WithoutGodsociallife wouldbeimpossible.There wouldbenosanctionforinjustice.Again,wealladmireunselfishnessandselfsacrifice,and
arereadytoapplaudthegiving ofone'slifeforanother.Now,as farasthedonorofhislifeis concerned,therecanbenothing tobegainedfromhisactinthis life.Tosacrificehimself,therefore,foranotherwouldbethe mostfoolishofactsiftherewere noGodtoapproveandreward. Finally,allmenaremeantfor happinessanddesireit.This desirecanbemetingreatmeasureinthislifeinthecertain hopeofunionwithGodinthe next.Takeawaythishopeand theweakandthesufferinghave onlyalifeofdespair.These remarks,are,asIhavealready stated,onlymeanttobeindicationsofsomeofthemeansby whichmencometotheknowledge ofGod.
TheArgumentFromContingency
GODDOESEXIST
Now,letusattempta moreconclusivetypeofargument.Thisisanattempttoput intopopularlanguageanargumentwhich,ifIweretoputitin it-technicalterms,wouldappear evenmoreabtruseandintricate thanwhat1amabouttosay.I dosointhehopethatifitloses anythinginforceitmaymake upforthatlossinclarity.You willseeforyourself.Undernu circumstances,isiteasytoput suchargumentsbotheleailyand brieflyatthesametime.Toput itfullywouldtakemuchmore timethanisatourdisposal.
Thisproofiscalled"TheArgumentfromContingency."It supposesafirstprinciplecalled the"PrincipleofSufficientReason,"whichmaybeenunciated ssfollows:Everybeinghasa sufficientreasonforitself,i.e.,an explanationthatcansatisfythe mind.Thissufficientreasonis eitherinthethingitselforin another.Everybeingeither existsinitselforithashadits existenceconferreduponitby anotherbeing.In.thefirstcase, itiscalledaself-existentbeing; inthesecond,itissaidtobe contingentordependent.Itake ityouwillacceptthisprinciple. Itcanbejustified,buttodoso newwouldtaketoolongand wouldmakeratherdullanddifficultlistening.Ourmainlineof argumentwillbedifficultenough withoutlosingourselvesindi5-ressions.
Ishallintroducetheprooffor God'sexistencebysayingthat somethingexists.Fromthe factthatsomethingexistswe concludetothefactthatsomethinghasalwaysexisted.Ido notmeanthatthesamethinghas alwaysexisted,butonlythat thereneverwasatimewhen therewasabsolute,nothingness. Thereasonforthisconclusionis thatitisimpossiblethatabeing shouldappearinexistencefrom purenothing.Sothen,going backinimaginationoverthe countlessyears,wefindalong seriesofbeings,andweknow thatweshallneverfindinthe remotepastadeepvoidofpure nothingness.
Now,beforecomingtothe proofofGod'sexistence,letus takeoneofthemanybeingsthat doexist,thecatsleepingnear thefire,forexample.Iknow
thedaythecatwasborn.I snowadaywhenitdidnot exist.Thisbeinghasnotalways existed;ithascomeintoexistence.Existence,therefore,is nutpartofthecat'snature,for ifitwasthenatureofthecatto exist,thiscatwouldnothave comeintoexistence,itWould havealwaysexisted:Iwantyou tothinkofthat,toturnthat pointoverquietlyinyourmind. Itisnotasophistry.Thecat exists,butitsoexiststhatit neednotexist.Existenceisnot partofthecatnature.Ifexistencewerepartofthecatnature, itwouldsoexistthatitmust exist.Therefore,thecatisnot anecessarybeing;itiscalleda contingentbeing,itreceivesexistence,athingwhichisdistinct fromitsnatureandwhichgives itactualbeing.
Now,briefly,fortheproofof God'sexistence.Allthingsin theuniversearesubjectto change.Whatissubjectto changehasnotexistenceaspart ofitsnature;otherwisebeing existencebynature,itcouldnot besubjecttochangebyreceiving existence.Thereforeallthevisibleuniverseanditspartsare subjecttochangeandarecontingent,ordependent.Whatis contingenthasnotinitselfa sufficientreasonforitsexistence,sinceitisnotpartofits naturetoexist.Thereforethere mustbe,distinctfromtheuniverseandallitsparts,asufficientreasonfortheexistenceof theuniverseandallitsparts. Thissufficientreasoncannotbe foundinsomeothercontingent beingforthesamereason.It mustbefound,therefore,ina Beingwhichisnotcontingent butnecessary,Whosenatureis existence.ThisBeingmusthe eternal,becauseitisinits naturetobe.Itmustbechangeless;otherwiseitwouldbecontingent.Itmustbeunique; otherwiseitwouldbelimitedand subjecttochange.Fromthe natureofthebeingswhichdependfromitforexistenceas fromthesourceoftheirbeing, weknowthatthisbeingmustbe intelligentandhavefreewill.
