Well,ofcourse,bythistimethe oldertranslationswerearchaic, andinanycasetherewasno cheapprintedversionavailable.

TheLambethConferenceisa mostpuzzlingaffairtomostCatholics,fortheyfailutterlyto lidanysympatheticaffinitywith asystemofreligiouscompromise. Butthesoulsofmanygoodand earnestmembersoftheChurch ofEnglandmustfindsomesolacefortheirsub-conscious yearningforreligiouscertainty initsdeliberations.Although Lambethhasnotdefinitivepowersoverthefaithandmoral practicesofAnglicans,itdoesre presentagenerouscross-section oftheirreligiousleadership,and ithas,therefore,anincalculable moralauthority.IfCatholics havecometoregardtheconclusions,orspeculations,ofLambethaspuzzling,itisbecause therehasbeeninrecentyearsa lamentabletendencytowards moraldefeatism.Theprevious Conference,itwillberecalled, gaveaveryguardedapprovalto thepracticeofbirth-prevention. Whateverqualificationsandmodificationswerelaidclown,itcertainlydidenormousmischief,for ifthenaturallateadmitsexceptions,therewillshortlybemore exceptionsthanlaw.IntherecentConference,however,ifwe mayjudgebypressreports, therearemorehearteningtidings.
Thefirstconcernsthequestion ,,fCommunism.Onthistopic theLambethpronouncementis thefirstofficialstatementofits kindwhichcondemnsMarxism outofhand.Itisbelated.It ismorethan25yearsoverdue, whenoneconsidersthedatesof Papalutterancesonthesame subject.Butitisvaintocarp, forthetimesaresogravethat wecannotbutwelcomeournew allies,muchasWellingtongreetedBlucher.Communismhas prevailedbecauseofthefalse toleranceofLiberalpolitics.And now,whentheneedofcombattineitisuniversallyrecognised, politicshasnothingtooffer.The onlyrealopposition(recognised bytheMarxiststhemselves)is fromtheCatholicChurch.But eaenthoughtheanti-Redchorus growslouderandmoregeneral, theChurchyetfindsitselfinan isolatedposition,becausemany oftheopponentsofCommunism makestrangebed-fellows.They areright,butforthewrongreasons.AndtheChurchwouldbe foolishtoembracethemasallies ifonlyoutoffearthatthe worldwouldidentifytheharmonyasChurchapprovalofthe old,evil,economicstatusquo.
Yet,insofarastheLambeth decisionisbasedondisinterested motives(andIbelievethistobe thecase),itisawelcomealliance.ThePopeshavenot ceasedtocallfuracommon frontagainsttheenemyamong Christianmenofgood-will, andonlysmugnesscouldurge anyCatholictorejectthepreferredhand,howeverbehind time.WhethertheLambethdecisionwasthecauseornot,itis interestingtonotethatanAnglicanbishopandanotherminister ofsomeprominencehaveresignedfromanorganisationdefinitelyknowntobeCommunistininspirationandleadership.Here wasoneofthemostirritating featuresoftheAnglicanposition;wecouldhavemanagedthe fightagainstCommunismwithoutthem,hadtheybeencontent toremainneutralorpassive,but ohenmembersofthehierarchy actuallyheadedRedmovements(asdupes,admittedly)it wassomewhatdiscouraging.Of theDeanofCanterburyIshaft saynothing;heissomething outoftimeandoutofplace.But toourAnglicanbrothersjoined get-togethertodefinemorecloselytherespectivespheresofinfluenceofStatesandCommonwealth.Thiswillnotcome about,however,untilCanberra finallyabandonsitsaristocratic insolenceofthe"Wearesimply notinterested"type.

Thesecondmatterdiscussed, andalmostasgreatinitssocial implicationsasthefirst,isthe Anglicaninsistenceontheindissplubilityofmarriage.Itis scarcelytobewonderedatthat solemnly-contractedpactsbetweennationshavebeenreduced inourtimetomerescrapsof paper,whentheplightedvowto life-longunionandfidelitybetweenhusbandandwifemayhe renderedemptyandhypocritical bytheadmissionofdivorce.For thepastsixtyyearsithasbeen agrievousscandaltotheChristianworldthatChristiansects havepermittedtherightofremarriagetodivorcedparties,or eventothe'innocent"party. Theyhavepresumedtocompromisetheclear-cutteachingof ChristandtheuniversalpracticeoftheChurchfromthebeginning,andhaveplayedthe gameofthesecularistsalltoo

Aboutthetechnique.Anunseenspeaker,knownasTheVoice ofthePlay(itisRossHamilton'svoice,andaverygoodone itis,too)takespartinthedialoguethroughanamplifieratthe rearofthetheatre.Weareto understandthatitisthevoiceor .aplayproducer-cum-publicity agentfor"LifeintheRaw,"a magazinesponsoringtheproduction.Thuswearelookingata playwithinaplay.Thecharactersareamarriedcouplecalled WendyandBill.Theyareto showushowamarriagebreaks up,workingonthetheorythat personalhabitswhichbeginas annoyancesendasintolerable anddisruptinginfluences.This issheerpoppycock,andeveryone isboredtotears,includingMrs. Rowbotham,thetheatrecleaner, whoisanonlooker.Twoother onlookerswhiskedoutofthe etherareastuffymemberof parliamentandanimpossiblepsychiatrist-bothratheramusingcaricatures,whospeakup wellandactasifthey'vehad sometraining.TheyareHarry PhippsandJohnDenton,respectively.ThecharwomanisTerri Atkinson,whodoesagoodjob throughoutandsuppliesthesocial philosophywhichisthefeature oftheplayafterinterval.Regu- lartheatre-goersmaymentally compareherwithMayKnowles, whowasMrs.Battyin"They CametoaCity."Ithinkthe resemblanceisratherstriking.
WendyandBill(BiddieLawsonandBruceMcCreery)talk
backtoGeorge(theVoice),and attempttoconvincehimthathis ideasonwhathappenstolove arequiteastray.Theyknow, becausetheythemselvesaremarriedandhavehadanestrangement.Mrs.Rowbothamcomes outofherdozeandeagerly agrees.Presumablyshealso knows.Georgewon'tbeconvinced,so Mrs.Rowbotham "crowns"himandtakesover herself.Thusthereisquitean elementofcomedyintheplay. Thetwo"experts"(M.P.and psychiatrist)areeffectively squashed,andinthesecondhalf WendyandBilldemonstratehow theirmarriagehasbeenblighted byexternalpressure,economic troubles,andshortageofproper accommodation.Thustheplay isquiteup-to-date.
InextensionofwhatIhave saidaboutthetechnique,letme addthattheplayisdoneinblack curtains,withaminimumof "props,"andthatspotlightsare usedtointroducechangesof scene.Thereisnothingnewin allthis,butitisunusual.From theordinarylayman'spointof view,itisprobablyalsoallvery confusingandunnecessary.tut authorTedWillislaiditdown thatway,andproducerJohn Bottomleylikesitthatway,too.
Thefirsthalfoftheplayisvery irritating,becauseitdealswith thesortoftritenonsenseabout marriageworkedtodeathin cheapfictionandtime-wornvaudeville"gags."Itisthemore irritatingbecausewedon'tknow thatwearesupposedtobeirritatedbyit.Wegaspwithrelief whenMrs.Rowbothamsuggests thereisanotheranswertowhat happenstolove.Theanswer giveninthesecondhalf,though partlytrue,isstillnotfullyconvincing.Walkingawayfrom theplay,IthoughtofShakespeare'slines:"Thefault,dear Brutus,isnotinourstars,butin ourselves,thatweareunderlings."Whenwillsomeplaywright,seekingasolutionofsocialproblems(andsomanyare onthattrackthesedays)laythe blamefordisasterwhereitso oftenrightlybelongs-onhis owndoorstep,andonyoursand mine?

Ihavebeenaccusedofexcessiveuseofsuperlativesinthis columndolingthepastfew months._Tothisimpeachment1 dunotpleadguilty;Ihavehad occasiontousesuperlatives,butI havenotusedthemexcessive.y Infact,likeamiser,Ihave hoardedthemup,andIhavestill onethinglefttosayaboutacondmtor-thathewasperfect. IamquitesurethatthePerth SymphonyOrchestrahasnever playedbetterthanitdidinthe TchaikowskyFifth.UnderKlecki'sinspireddirectionthiswellknownworkbecameanewmusicalexperiencetothepackedCapitolaudience,andtheapplauseat theendwasthemostprolonged andenthusiasticeveraccordeda conductor.Theysimplyrefused toallowhimtoretireandheretuniedtimeandagaintothe footlightstoacknowledgethe spontaneoustributetohiswork.
TheamazingpartoftheperformancewasKlecki'sunerring instinctforbalance.Inafew rehearsalshehadsummedupthe tonalqualityofallsections,and
eatinginspots,andmaybeit wouldgrowononeifheardmore often.
TheConcertoNo.2inFMinor ofChopinfranklyputmeto sleep-itgenerallydoeswithfar moredynamicplayersthanNora Coalstad.IsupposeChopinfelt thatanorchestraintheback-
groundwouldshowoffhistech nicalskilltoadvantage,orperhapsactasagoodsettingforhis colourfulpersonality,butsofar asIamconcerneditisjusta pianosonatawithaperfectly superfluousinstrumentationaddedtoitbyacomposer,who,for allhisgenius,had'noorchestral senseatall.
PinkStringandSealingWax TherrySociety'sProduction
TherrySociety'slatesteffortto bringgreaterglorytoGod throughMary(seemottoattop ofprogramme),wasRowland Pertwee'scomedy-dramaofthe eighties.Aplayoffamilylife withtheharshbullyingfather, themeeknit-witmother,and secretlyrebelliousfamily,that havecometoberegardedastypicalofVictorianlife.Aplay whichdefendednothingthatwas goodandcondemnednothing thatwasbadineithertheworld, thefleshorthedevil.Aplay whiskgavenothingbutlightheartedentertainmenttoafairly largeandappreciativeaudience.
Therryisnotdoingitsjob!It istimeittooktheswordofthe spokenwordanduseditagainst theevilsoftheworld.There issomuchitcoulddo,forthe dramaisapowerfulmediumfor goodorevil orlight-hearted entertainment;andIthinkthe timehascomefortheTherrySocietytochoosehowitwilluse thismedium.Aretherenotamong thememberssomewhowillform aplay-readingcircle-discriminatingreaders,notnecessarilyactors,whowillreadtogetherand recommendplaystobepresented.Thisisnotajobtobeleft totheactors.Beinghuman, theytoooftenchooseaplay wlithanicejuicyparttheyfeel theywouldliketoplay,andthe valueofaplay,fromthepoint ofviewoftheTherrySociety, shouldnotbebasedonanyone part,butonwhethertheplayas awholepresentstotheaudience theChristianwayoflife,orcondemnstheun-Christian."Pink StringandSealingWax"didnot dothis.Itdidnothingbutentertain.Evenasaplayofthis typeitwasnotgood,foritwas neitheragoodcomedyoffamily lifeoragoodthriller,butajumbleofboth;andsomeofthepink stringcouldwellhavebeenused byPertweetotiehisplota littlemoretightly.

IanMilbank,astheVictorian Father,losthisaccentattimes too,andhecouldhavewelldone withoutit,butotherwisehisactingwasgoodinadifficultrole. HisdramaticscenewithPearl Bondlackedtheblusterandtemperthatshouldhavegonewith thecharacter,but,onthewhole, hewasgood.FrankPowell,as Albert,theson,hasability,but needsmoreexperiencetogive himtheeaseofmovementand timingthatissonecessary. GeorgeAtwell,asDr.O'Shea, andFrankQuinlivan,asEarnest, hisson,wereadequateinthe smallerparts,thoughattimes Earnestwasinclinedtotrailoff hiswords.
Thecast,individually,dida goodjob,butasawholeitlackedcohesion.Itseemedtome thateachonehadthoroughly learnedhisorherpartandrehearseditaloneinthewashhouseorinfrontofthebedroom mirror;buttherehadnotbeen enoughrehearsalswiththewhole castattending.This,Iknow,is brieofthegreatesttrialsofa producer'slife,butitisvitally necessarytoagoodperformanceandalonegivesthatfinish andpolishwhichisthehallmarkofgoodproduction.
Alltheplayerswerewordperfectandspokeclearly.Oneforgivessomesmallfaultsforthe giftof withouteasy,pleasantlistening, strain. TheTherrySocietyhastalent todrawupon;itundoubtedly has,butitneedsmorethoroughproduction,moreattentiontodetail,moreexperienceandthenrm resolvetoforeverkeepinmind themotto,"admajoremDei gloriamperMariam!" -ELDORADO.

heblendedallthebestthatwas availableintoarichharmony thatcoveredupthedeficiencies ofourensemble,whileatthe sametimegivingfullexpression tothelushorchestrationof Tchaikowsky.Hisgestureswere wideandvigorous,andthevolumeseemedtoswellanddiminish beneaththetipsofhisfingers. InBeethoven's"Coriolan" Overture,hiscontroloftheorchestrawasimmediately'evident fromtheopeningrisingandfallingphraseS,butitwasinthe finalitemthathereallyexploited thewholefieldoforchestralcolourinawaythatfewpeople woulddarewiththelimitedresourcesofourlocalorchestra.
Again,intheSuiteforStrings bythecontemporaryPolishcomposer,Spisak,thewayinwhich heheldthevarioussectionsof thestringstogether,andmouldedthemintoarhythmicpattern,wassuperbtowatch.Asfor theworkitself,eversinceIsaw "Fantasia"Ihaverealisedthat somethinglikethiswouldhave tocome.Takeawaythesoundtrack,andasksomeenterprising composertore-translatethe "ToccataandFugue"pictures iitomusic,andyouwillfinishup withsomethinglikeSpisaks 'SuiteforStrings."Itwasa triflemonotonouswithitsrepetitionofthemes,butquiteinter-

BrotherStanislauswasitsfirst Director,butonBrotherSebastian'sbroadshouldersfellthe mainburdenoforganisationof studies,sport,financesandgeneraladministration.Howwell thoseearlymenpioneeredisevidencedwhenwelearnthatfour yearslateronatBrotherSebastian'sdepartureforSouthAustralia,theCollegewaspackedto capacitywith160boarders;later hereturnedtoS.I.C.asteacher andfinallyasDirector.

OccasionallyBrotherMatthias wouldmovemearoundtovarious positions,infieldandoutfield.But thefirsttimeheputmeinthe boxtopitchcamewhenIdispleasedhim.Heputmeinto showmeup. Anewlaw.ispendinginSweden whichistoabrogatetherestrictionsstillprevailingagainstthe Catholicsinthatcountry,said BishopJohannesErikMueller, VicarApostolicofSweden.
Swedishcitizens,theBishop explained,until1860werenot permittedtobecomeCatholics.
Sincethenthesituationhas changed,butcertainrestrictions stillprevail,particularlyasfar asreligiousOrdersareconcerned.Thesenowaretoberescinded,andtheoutlookishopefulthatthenewlawwillbe adoptedbytheSwedishParliament,hesaid.

"Onebigshadowoverhangingourconstitution,"Dr.Cello added,"istheprovisionthattheJesuitOrderanditsaffiliated SocietiesmaynotbeadmittedinanypartofSwitzerlandwhile theirmembersareforbiddentocarryonanykindofactivityin churchesandschools. TherevisedarticlesoftheConstitutionof1874makethissituationevenworsebyforbiddingthe establishmentofnewmonasticcommunitiesortherestorationor thosethathavebeendissolved."
