M.Loyson,wentthroughthe formofmarriage.TheFrencn novelistandfreethinker,George Sand,thenwrote:"WillPere Hyacinthestillhearconfessions? Thatisthequestion.Isthesecrecyoftheconfessionalcompatiblewiththemutualconfidences ofconjugallove?IfIwerea Catholic,Iwouldsaytomy children:'Havenosecretswhich costtoomuchinthetelling,and thenyouwillhavenocauseto fearthegossipofthevicar's wife.'"

Now,Idonotmeantoimply thatcertainAnglo-Catholic clergymenwhohaveadoptedthe practiceofhearingconfessions areguiltyofbetrayingsecretsto theirwives.Foronething,the kindofAnglicanclergymanwho hearsconfessionsishimselfgenerallyunmarried.ButIdo thinkthatGeorgeSand'swords indicatewhatmostpeoplefeel aboutthissubject.Theyfeel theywouldratherconfidein someonewhostandsapartfrom theirlife,andisnottemptedto sharehisknowledgewithothers.

AHIGHERSTATE.

But,ofcourse,thereareother reasonswhichmakepriestly celibacymuchmoredesirable thanitsopposite.Firstofall, whilemarriageandvirginityare bothholy,ithasbeentheunwaveringconvictionoftheCatholicChurchfromtheearliest timesthatvirginityisthehigher andtheholierstate.Andit wouldnotbedifficulttoshowthat thisisatruthwhichhumannatureitselfinstinctivelyrecognises.ItseemsparticularlyfittingthattheChristianpriesthood,whichisnottransmitted bycarnalgenerationlikethe JewishpriesthoodoftheOldTestament,butisimpartedsacramentally,shouldbeonemarked bytheprerogativeofvirginity. Moreover,allpriestsoftheCatholicChurchholdtheirpriesthoodindependanceonChristthe HighPriest;anditseemsonly rightthatthesepriestsshould, bytheircelibacyandtheselfsacrificewhichitinvolves,resembleHiminwhosepriesthood theyshare.

MOREFREEDOM.

MISSIONARYADVANTAGE.

Inquiterecenttimestheenormousadvantagesofacelibate priesthoodhavebeenstrikingly shownonthemissionfieldsof China.Duringthosegrimyears whentheJapanesearmiespenetratedfarintoChineseterritory andheldhugeportionsofitundertheircontrol,theCatholic missionaries,whohadonlytheir ownlivestolose,wereableto standattheirpostsandriskthe consequences.Agreatnumber ofnon-Catholicmissioners,many ofthemlarge-heartedandheroic men,werecompelledtothinkot theirwivesandchildren,andto withdrawbeforetheadvancing troops.Tosaythisisnotlo allotpraiseorblame;itisinthe verynatureofthingsthatcelibatepriestscanendurepoverty, hardshipanddangerwhicha marriedmanwithfamilyresponsibilitieswillnormallyfeelcaliedupontoavoid.

CANCELLINGOUT. Catholicteachingiscommonly assailedfromoppositesides. Modernistsandotherstellus thatweclingtoomuchtothedead letterofthepast, andthatwe don'tseethattheChurchshould bealivingthing, evolvingnew doctrineswhichwillexpressin termssuitabletothemodern worldthecontinuousreligious experienceofman.Thesepeopleblameusforacceptingthe Scripturesasthefinalwordon anything.Theytellusthatthe Bibleisonlysomuchfolk-lore

So,whatwithonethingand another,wemustbeverywrong indeed.Eitherwearetoooldfashioned,andweclingtoshibbolethsandoutwornformulations; orelsewearetoomodernand advanced,andwearenotplain simpleBible-Christians.But here,assooftenelsewhere,the oppositeaccusationscancelout.

Botharebasedonmisunder standingsoftheCatholicdoctrineofRevelation.

INCOMPLETEREVELATION.

Inthefirstplace,theCatholic Churchhasneverclaimedthat thewholecontentofRevelation istobefoundintheScriptures. Foronething,theScripturesdo nottellusthattheyareinspired,andtheydonottelluswhich particularbooksbelongtothe canonortrueScriptureanti whichdonot.Ifweacceptthe doctrineofinspiration,andifwe acceptacertainnumberofbooks asrepresentingGod'swordto man,thenwemustdothison someauthorityotherthanthat oftheBibleitself.

Furthermore,itisnottobe supposedthateverywordofrevealedtruthutteredbyChrist hasbeenincludedintheGospels.St.Johntellsusthat therearemanyotheraspectsof Hislifeandteachingwhichare notrecorded."Manyothersigns alsodidJesusinthesightofHis Apostles,whicharenotwritten inthisbook"(20,30).And again,withadaringfigureof speech:"Buttherearemany otherthingswhichJesus whichiftheywerewrittenevery one,theworlditself,Ithink, wouldnotcontainthebooksthat shouldbewritten,"Thenthere wereothertruthswhichwerenot revealeddirectlybyChrist,but certainlyformpartofthedepositofChristianFaith.BeforeHewenttodie,OurLord said:"Ihaveyetmanythingsto saytoyou,butyoucannotbear themnow.Butwhenhe,the Spiritoftruthiscome,hewill teachyoualltruth"(John16,1213).Theseadditionaltruthsof theChristianrevelationcould notbeincludedintheGospels, whicharelivesofChrist,andwe havenoreasontosupposethat theyareallincludedinother partsoftheNewTestament.

CHRIST'SINTENTION.
