Intheshortlifeofourcountry, perhapsnoothercitycanclaim suchalifeofupsanddownsas theNorthernTeriitory'scapital. Settlementandabandonment,gi. gamicplanning,butnoaction, havebeenthelotofthetown; notuntilthewaryearsdidit turnfromtheoutcastbackdoor ofthenationtothepotential frontdoor.
FirstsettlementinDarwinwas madeinthe1860's,afterSouth AustraliahadtakenovertheadministrationoftheNorthernTerritcry.
In1882theJesuitFatherscame totheinfanttown.
Sixyearsaftertheirarrival,in 1888,thefirstchurchwasbuilt.. WiththeaidofChineselabour, itwaserectedofwood,andgiven theappropriatetitleofSt. Mary's,StaroftheSea.
In1902,throughadeclinein thepopulation,andothercauses, theJesuitswereforcedtoabandontheMission.Thoughno priestwasstationedatDarwinin theensuingfouryears,those travellingonvisitingshipsdid whattheycouldbeforecontinuingtheirjourney.
BISHOPGSELL.
In1906therecametothesettlementayoungFrenchpriest, notasavisitor,buttotakeup permanentresidence. After spendingsixyearsinPapua, I.atherFrancisXavierGsell, M.S.C.,wasappointedtoDarwin.
OneofFatherGsell'sfirstconcernswasCatholiceducation,and hepersonallyassistedtwoBrotherswhomhebroughtfromNew Guinea,intheerectionofaconvent.Tothis,threeyearsafter hisarrival,cametheSistersit theMissionariesofOurLadyoi theSacredHeart.
Intendinghisflock,theaborigineswereanequalconcern.The miserabletriballawsWhereby youngnativegirlswerebetrothedattheirbirthtooldmen greatlydistressedhim.After al,intensivestudyoftriballaw andcustomsheevolvedhisplan fortheliberationoftheyoung girls.
FatherQuell,findingthatit waspossibleforthenatives,undertheirowelaws,to"purchase" wives,himselfenteredintothe bargaining,andwithtea,sugar, flour,etc.,"purchased"theyoung girlsfromtheirprospectivehusbands.
OncesettledattheBathurst IslandMission,whichheestablished60milesnorthofDarwin in1911,thegirlswerefreeto marryoftheirownchoicein lateryears.
To-day,BathurstIslandMission, withitshappy,healthypeople,is
theprideoftheNorthernTerritory,andherethenativepopulat;onisincreasingratherthandecreasing.
LARGESTBISHOPRIC.
Presidingoverthelargestbishopricintheworld,extending 1,000milessouthbeyondAlice Springs,andincludingThursday Island,1,000milestotheeast, HisLordshiphastravelledfor daysbyvariousmeansoftransport-horseback,camel,canoe, andonfoot-toreachoutlying districts.
Inthemiddle'seventies,the populationinthewholeofthe Territoryscarcelynumberedtwo thousand.By1919,however,it
shipperfilledthechurchtooverflowing.Britishers,Americans, andDutchwereamongtheservice-menwhonowexclusively comprisedthecongregations. Itwasimpossibletoaccommodateinthechurchallwhocame alongeachSunday,andinafew weeksAmericanArmyengineers voluntarilyenlargedthenave, increasingaccommodation,but hardlyaddingtothebeautyof theoldchurch.
POST-WAR.
Theendofthewaryears broughtthereturnofcivilians, includingmanyex-servicepersonnel,whohadservedinthe Territory.
TheCatholicsocieties,includingtheHolyNameandChildren Mary,weresoonre-established.TheLegionofMary,startedtherebyAmericanServicemenduringthewaryears,carriedon,changingfromthewartimeall-servicegroupstoacivilianparishPraesidium.
Thefourthanniversaryofthe bombing-19/2/46--sawthereturnoftheSistersoftheSacred Heart,theconventbeingthe onlyschoolinthetownopenfor somemonths.
In1946,HisLordshipBishop GsellcelebratedtheGoldenJubileeofhisordination.Inthefollowingyear,priortohisdepartureforRomeandhishomeland, alargecrowdgatheredtobidhim farewell. Withagrowingpopulation,in theregionof5,000,andtheopeningofsettlementsatNightcliff andParap,afewmilesfromthe town,twonewchapelshavebeen

hadsoincreasedinDarwinitself thatitwasfoundnecessaryto addanewsanctuaryandtranseptstoSt.Mary'sChurch. inthesameyear,acyclone, commencingatduskandreaching itszenithintheearlyhoursof themorning,practicallywiped outBathurstIslandMission,all buildingsrequiringtobereerected. Forhisoutstandingworkfor thenatives,FatherGsellwas awardedtheOrderoftheBritish Empire,andin1938wasraised b)theChurchtothedignity01 Bishop.
WAR.
February19th.,1942,sawthe firstbombsdroppingonAustraliansoil,andinthe65airraids intheensuingeighteenmonths, St.Mary'sdidnotescapedamage. Windowlessafterthefirstraids, itsroofandwallspiercedbyflyingshrapnel,St.Mary'swas, however,preservedfromadirect hit.ThehighaltarandBishop's throneweredamaged,together withastatueofanangelbeside thehighaltar,whichisnow knownasthe"woundedstatue."
TheonlychurchinDarwin whichremainedopenright throughthewaryears,oftenas manyastwentyMasseswere offeredthereonaSunday,during themorning,afternoonandevening.
By1943,yetothernationalitiesaddedtothosewhichhad beenseeninSt.Mary'sdownthe years,andanothertypeofwor-

convertedfromArmyhutsto meetthespiritualneedsofthe Catholicsofthese"suburbs." COMMEMORATION.
Itisnolongerpossibleforthe existingSt.Mary's,Starofthe Sea,todojusticetothespiritual needsoftheentireCatholicpopulationofDarwin-boththemembersofthepermanentgarrison stationedthere,andtheincreasingcivilianpopulation. Tocommemoratethebravery ofthosewhogavetheirlivesin thisbattlearea,thenewSt. Mary's,StaroftheSea,isbeing plannedasaWarMemorial ChurchandShrineofThanksgiving;sacredtothememoryof bothourowngallantAustralian servicemenandmembersofthe British,AmericanandDutch forceswho,fightingsidebyside, nowliesidebysideattheAdelaideRiverWarCemetery.

ROME,July16.-Eventsin ItalyfollowingtheattemptedassassinationofCommunistleader PalmiroTogliatti,haverevealed causesforconcerndeeperthan thepossibilitythatothermad youthsmighttakeintotheirown Landswhattheyconsiderthe welfareofthecountry.
Whileuniversalregretisfelt attheattemptsonMr.Togliatti's life,andwhilegenerouswishes forhisspeedyrecoveryhave beenexpressedinallcircles,the thingthathasforciblystruckonserversisthequicknesswith whichtheCommuniststriedto capitaliseontheincident-the efficiencywithwhichtheyparalysedthenationandattemptedto forcethepresentGovernment's resignation.However,theGovernmentofPremierAlcideDc Gasperi,ChristianDemocrat,has staunchlyrefusedtoacceptresponsibilityforthedeed,andhas movedquicklyandcarefullyin theinterestsofpublicorder.
Communisteffortstoprofitby tileattemptedassassinationwere detailedintheChamberofDeputiesherebyInteriorMinister MarioScelba,whenhenarrated
thepublicdisordersthroughout thecountryduringthepastfew days.
Thepatternanddevelopment ofevents,hetoldtheDeputies, clearlyshowedanintentionand anefforttoputintooperationan existingplan.Withinonlya fewhoursaftertheshooting,he teported,themovementtowarda generalstrikewaswellunder waythroughoutItaly,andby sundown-actuallybeforetheexecutiveoftheGeneralConfederationofItalianLabour(CGIL) finallydecidedoncallingastrike -completeworkstoppagehad takenplacebecauseofthetight Communistcontrolofthelabour movement.
Mr.Scelbadeclaredthaton tl,eafternoonoftheshooting localsecretariesoftheCommun. istPartyproducedtelegrams purportingthatthestrikewasin accordwithCGILorders-even beforethatbodybegantodeliberateoncallingastrike.
TheInteriorMinisteralsodetailedapatternofimmediateand concentratedattacksonArmy andpoliceheadquarters,thedisarmingofpolice,takingprisoner theofficialsofindustrialestablishments,blockadingstreets,and rioting.AtRietti,herelated, severalmenoccupiedthebell tower,rangthebellsloudly,and
deGASPERI"movedquickly." proclaimedthat"themomenthad come."
Therewaslittleviolencein Rome,exceptforaflare-upon thePiazzaColonnashortlyafter theattemptedassassination.The orderthatprevailedinRomewas largelyduetothefastandfirm actionbypoliceinpreventing gatheringsfromgettingoutlf control.
Thegreatestphysicalviolence intheItaliancapitalactually tookplaceinParliament,where fiercefightsbrokeoutbetween
BERNE,Switzerland,June18 -NC).-Astatementwhich,in effect,exoneratesaHungarian priestfromchargesof"incitementtomurder,"andaccuses Hungarianpoliceofbarringecclesiasticalauthoritiesfrom makingacompleteinvestigation, wasreadinaHungarianlanguagebroadcastbyVaticanRadio, whichwasmonitoredhere.
Thestatementissuedbythe authoritiesoftheArchdioceseof Eger,Hungary,dealtwiththe occurrencesinthevillageofPosspetri,whereapolicemanwas killedduringademonstration againstthenationalisationofCa. tholicschools.Thelocalpriest, theRev.JanosAsztalos,wasarrestedonchargesof"incitement tomurder,"andafewdayslatex sentencedtodeath.Inaccordancewiththecourt'srecommendation,thePresidentofHungary,ZoltanTildy,commutedthe sentencetolifeimprisonment.
NewsreportsfromBudapest statedthatthepriestpleaded guilty,admittingthathehad been"over-zealous"andhad "misinterpreted" instructions fromhissuperiors.Theman whowasaccusedoftheactual shootingwashangedtwohours afterthesentencewaspronounced. Thestatementbyecclesiasticalauthorities,basedonavailabledata,massasfollowsaccordingtothebroadcast:
"Followingtheinstructionof theTeachers'TradeUnion,the PocspetripriestcalledaconferenceofparentsforJune1,at whichhereadtheappealofthat tradeunion,afterwhichheplacedtwopiecesofpaperonthe tableaskingparentstosignone ofthemiftheyapprovedofthe nationalisationofschools,orthe otheriftheyinsistedonthe maintenanceofdenominational schools.Thefirstlistwassignedbynone,whileallparentsattending,about400,registered theiropinionbysigningthesecond. HIMEJI,Japan,June24.(NC).-Thispagancityof250,000people,withonlyabout45 Catholics,wastouchedbythearrivaloffourImmaculateHeart ofMarymissionerstoaidthe people'smoralandreligiousrehabilitation.
Undertheleadershipofa paganbusinessmanthecitydecidedonapublicdemonstration toshowitsgratitudetotheBelgianmissioners.Afterthree monthsofpainstakingprepara tion,thedemonstrationtook place.ItincludedaSolemn PontificalMass,atwhichBishop. PaulTaguchi,ofOsaka,officiated,andaprogrammeofwelcome.

Therearerumoursthattheheads ofthetallestredpoppiesin Czechoslovakiaareabouti.o fall.And,oddlyenough,thetest ofthetruthofthiscanardwould seemtobetheattitudeofGottwaldtowardtheChurch.Assuredly,heisnofriendoftheCatholicChurch,buthecameto powerinthemoststrikingly sham"elections"yetheld,evenin EasternEurope,atatimewhen theSovietpatternofsuchfrauds hadbeenusedashadetoooften tobereadilyaccepted,andina :cationwhich,owingtoitsMasonicassociations,hadbeenfor agenerationthedarlingofthe "democratic"press.Gottwald hasbeeninaproperstew.He hastoplayballwithhisSoviet masters,andatthesametimeto playuptothelargelyfictional notionswhichthePresshas createdintheworldatlarge aboutCzechoslovakia'sdemocratictraditions

Idon'tthinkMr.Bradleysuffersmuchincomparison,though Trevoratthattimewasathis best,beingfreshandfullofvigourandinaroleforwhichhe seemedtohaveagreatdealof feeling.Bradley'sVennerwas onewithlessvigour,notinsuch afloridvein.Therewerefewer flashingglances,notsomuchcurl ofthelip,lessstridingabout; buttherewasastrongerappeal forsympathyand,itseemedto me,moresincerity
Itwasextraordinary11leway Bradley'sVennergrewononeas theplayprogressed.Hewas notatallimpressiveatfirst meeting,beingunsureofhimself,tooobviouslytense,and lackingdefinitenessinhismovements.Neitherwashisvoice arresting.Onewantedtocall outtohim:"Relax,man,relax." Buthesteadilybecameaninterestingcharacter,andgainedconfidenceintheprocess.
Dr.Venneris,ofcourse,the pivotaboutwhichtheplay swings.Paintedinstrong Cronincolours,heappearsasthe sametypeofbrilliantyoungsatiricalmedicowhomwehavemet insuchnovelsas"TheCitadel" and"CanaryIsland."Thereis somethingunfailinglyattractive aboutsuchaman.Heisatype ofhightragedy-avictimofcircumstances.Cronininvestshim withlifeandcolourand,above all,acorrosivesenseofhumour. Wefeelallthetimethatheis, underneathhishardcrust,avery likeablepersonality,andwesee thatheisashrewd,intelligent observerofmenandaffairs.He looksrightthroughmenand theirmotives,and,Isuppose,itis somesortofsatisfactiontousto feelthatweareprivytohisfindings,thatwe,inasense,share 1isintelligentappreciationof things.Nodoubtthepsychologistshaveanameforthepleasantreactionthatstirsinus whenweareinthepresenceof suchcharacters.
"JupiterLaughs"tellsthe storyofayoungmedicalresearchworkerwhoishampered inhisworkbytheignorance andmaliceofthosearoundhim. Itisonceagaintheclashofpure scienceversussheerhumbug.
Dr.PaulVenner,preventedoy circumstancesfromdoinghisresearchinaplacewhereitwould beproperlyappreciated,isendeavouringtocarryonhisexperimentsatHopewellTowers,a privatenursinghomeinEngland presidedoverbyacompletenincompoop,Dr.EdgarBragg.On thestaffisaninsufferabletoady andanancient'has-been."The latterhasatleastthegraceof goodwilltowardsVennerandhis work.Thereisalsoaspiteful matron,andafaithlesswifeDr.Bragg'swife.

EXPANSIVEFORCEOF CHURCH.
Itistruethat,assomeonehas said,thereareaboutfourhundredmillionCatholicsinthe world,andtheChurchisnotgo;ngtogetterriblyexcitedabout theprospectoftherebeingfour hundredmillionandone.Onthe otherhand,itisofthevery natureoftheChurch,asCatholic,thatitshouldrevealitssplendourbeforetheworld,andgive expressiontotheexpansiveforce withwhichChristendowedit,by diffusingitselfamongallnations andallmen.Andsoyoucan tellthenextCatholicyoumeet whoretreatsintohisshellatthe mentionofreligion,thatnobody isgoingtobitehim,andthatne oughttotakecourageandanswer yourquestionsfairlyandsquarelyandearnhisrighttotheproud titlewhichhebears.Andifyou haveaquestionordifficultyto whichyourCatholicfriendsdo notknowtheanswer,askthemto referyoutosomeonewhodoes knowit.Inthemeantime,I wouldremindyouthatitisnot likelythatanyquestionwhich yousendtotheCatholicAnswer willbeignored.
