Tito,rulerofthecountrywhose capitalwasaccordedthe"honour"offurnishingheadquarters fortheCominform,isnowsuddenlyexposedtotheworldas pursuinga"hatefulpolicy"towardSovietRussia;astakinga standpoint"unworthyofCommunists;"asindulgingin"slanderouspropaagnda"againstthe SovietUnion;asattemptingto gainthefavourof"imperialistic states"oftheWest;and,ingeneral,asputtingtheYugoslav CommunistParty''outsidethe familyofbrotherlyCommunist parties."

OneofthemostbafflingaspectsofthesituationisfurnishedbythechargeintheCominformindictmentthatTitomade overturestotheWest,or,asitis phrased,"Yugoslavleaders,orientingthemselvesbadlyinthe internationalsituationandfright. enedbyextortionatethreatsof theimperialists,thinkthatbya seriesofconcessionstoimperial isticstatestheycangainthefat. ourofthesestatestomakean agreementwiththemaboutthe independenceofYugoslaviaand graduallytoimplantintheYugoslavpeoplestheorientationof thesestates,thatis,theorientationofcapitalism."
Thischargeof"deserting"the ranksoftheSovietblocand ieldingtowhatistermeda"nationalistic"policyisInterpreted bysomeobserversasasignthat theattractivepoweroftheMarshallPlanfortheeconomicreconstructionofWesternEurope isfargreateramongthecountriesbehindthe"IronCurtain" thangenerallyassumed.

Butquiteapartfromallsuch speculation,observersgenerally agreethat,usingthewordsofa wartimestatementbyWinston Churchill,"thereisamaggotin theapple"oftheSovietbloc,and thatthesuddenlyrevealedrift intheCommunistranksisbound tostrengthenthepositionofthe Westintheworld-widestruggle withtheEast.
CzechPriests Released
Czechoslovakia,twopriests,both formermembersoftheCzecho slovakGovernment,havebeenreleasedfromthePraemonstratensianMonasteryatNovaRise, Moravia,wheretheyhadbeen confinedsincetheirarrestlast March.

Ofcourse,thetruthisthatthe CatholicChurchhasbeendenouncingCommunismeversince itmadeitsappearance.You writeasifwhatyoucall"thedemocraticcountries"weretheresoluteandclear-sightedopponentsofCommunismandtheCatholicChurchwerejustnowtryingtocurryfavourwiththese countriesbyjoininginthehueand-cry.Idoubtifyoureally thinkthat.Theblunderwould betoomonumental.Forlong thepressofthedemocraticcountriesleanedheavilytothelet initspresentationofforeign news,andCatholiccriticswho

Thosewhoevadeithavenofuture."Thatisonlyanotherway ofsayingwhatMgr.Fulton Sheensaidattheendofhisdramaticaddresstheotherweek. But,whileIhavethegreatestrespectforthosewhocallthemseiseaAnglo-Catholicsandrepudiatetheepithet"Protestant,"I thinktheirpositionisinconsist ent.Manyofthem,1know, 1,ouldmiketodisowntheReformationbut,astheycannotobliteratethehistorical,fact,they trytowhittledownitssignificance.Theyadmit,astheymust, theChurchofEnglandwas eectedbyProtestanttendencies, treydenythatitbecame Protestant.However,Ibelieve thatitcanbeconvincinglyshown thathistoryisagainstthem,and Ithinkthatmostpeopleoutside theirownpartylookupontheir ciaimsaswishfulthinking.Here theverdictofthenon-partisan historianandthatoftheordinary man-in-the-streetcoincides:both speakabouttheChurchofEnglandasProtestant.
CLEARDIVISION.
Inpractice,mostpeopleknow thatthereisoneChurchdifferent fromanythingelse.Eitherfor betterorworse,itstandsbyitself,asakindofperpetualchallengetotheworld.Somepeople loveitandothersfearit;many misunderstanditandaresuspiciousofit;othersspendtheirlives exploringitsbeautyandgrandeur;nobodyoverlooksit.The commonnameforitistheCatholicChurch.Outsidethat ChurchtherearemanyChristian sectsanddenominations,containingnumerousgoodandvirtuous people.Howeverthesesects differamongthemselves,they havethisincommon:theyexist

OBEDIENCEANDFREEDOM.
Thisobediencetolawfulecclesiasticalauthorityinmatters involvingfaithandmorals,isthe veryhall-markoftheCatholic. Itisnot,however,thecraven, blindobeisancethattheenemies oftheChurchareforeverperseverating.Byoneofthose paradoxeswhichstudtheCatholicFaith,thislimited,rational obedienceisthechiefguarantee oftheirspiritualliberty.PreciselybecauseChristripeaks throughthevoiceofabishop whenhejudgesauthoritatively;,1 religiousmatters,amanmaybe perfectlysurethatinaccepting hisguidanceheisfulfillingthe WillofGod.Withcertainty andwithgladnessheisfreeto dothethingsheoughttodo,the thingsGodwantshimtodo. Itiseasytorealisehow,owing tothefashionsoftheageinthe ballroomandonthebeach,the susceptibilitiesofpeopleinthe matterofimmodestattirehave coarsenedandhardened.But thoughfashionchanges,human naturedoesnot,andthereisvery iittleindicationinthisageofenlightenmentthatwehavehad anynotablesuccessinrepairing, orevenmitigating,theeffectsof ()signalSin.Indeed,manynationsstandinperilofdissolutionthroughtheconcupiscence oftheflesh,whichhasnogreateraidorcomfortthaninthecow cupiscenceoftheeyes.There isabsolutelynoreasonwhyCa tholicwomenshouldfollowsnivellinglyattheheelsofsome long-haireddressdesigners.it isawoefulconfessionofartistic bankruptcyinourranks.But inanycase,ifnothingpositiveis beingdone,atleastnowoman bearingthenameCatholicshould actinsuchawayastomakethe difficultcommandmentanintolerableburdenforothers.

GovernorWeldlaidthefoundationstoneoftheTownHallin 1870,andalsoestablishedmumdpalbodiesbytheActof1871. TheWeldswereafamilyremarkablealikefortheirdevotion totheFaithandtotheircountry.SirFrederickhadthirteen children,ofwhomthreedaughtersbecameNunsandtwosons priests.AfterhisdeathhiswidowbecameaBenedictineOblate intheMonasteryofwhichherdaughterwasPrioress. Describedas"oneofthebest administratorsthatsatinthe vice-regalchairinWesternAustralia,"FrederickAloysiusWeld hadamostdistinguishedColonialcareer.NephewofCardinal Weld,ofLulworthCastle,hewas bornofanaristocraticfamily. EducatedatStonyhurstCollege, hecametoNewZealandinhis youthandcombinedthepastoral ifewithexploring.
Amanofstatesmanlikeability andculture,SirFrederickwas recognisedforhisstraight-dealingandchivalryinpolitics,and madeanotablecontributionto Britain'scolonialempireata periodofgreatexpansion.

Isupposethatintheseventeenthcentury,whentheforgery wasfirstcirculated,thelanguage didnotseemquitesofar-fetched andridiculousasitdoesto-day, buteventhenitcouldonlyhave takenintheignorantandthe superstitious.Thosewhocould believesuchanextravagantand maliciouspieceofsensationalism wnoldhavehadnodifficultyin believinginwitchcraft,theevil eye,blackmagic,orthealchemist'sstone.Nowadays,anybody whocouldbringhimselftoswallowthe"Jesuitoath"would,I shouldimagine,qualifyfortreatmentinaquietroomwithup- holsteredwalls.

SisterMaryturnedandsaw overagainstthewall,flatonthe floor,apitifullydeformedlittle body.Twobigfrightenedeyes fulloftearsweregazingather. Theheadwastheheadofan eightornineyearoldboy,but thebodyapparentlythatofa threeyearoldbaby.Sothis wasSister'snewpatient;here washerprincipalchargefor many,manymonthstocome.
