Theonlyissuethatremained waswhatwastobedonewith thehorse.TheReferenceBoard decidedthatitshouldbeworkedinanothersectionofthemine forafewdays,andthenbe handedovertoaminernominatedbytheSuperintendentofthe mineforfurthertraining.After atimetheBoardwouldreview Red'sconduct,andifhehadnot improvedwouldhavehimpermanentlyremovedfromthe mine.

CATHOLICPUBLIC INFLUENCE.
YouspeakaboutthedisabilitiesofCatholicsinEnglandand theBritishEmpire.Idonut thinkthereisanypointinexaggeratingthesedisabilities.We oughtnottoconfusethepresent stateofthingswiththevery realoppressionofCatholicswhich tookplaceintheseventeenthand eighteenthcenturies.Thereis nothingtobesaidindefenceof theoldsystemofpenallaws whichcutCatholicsofffrompubliclifeandoftenmadetheir privatelivesamartyrdom.But themostgrievousandcrying wrongswereredressed,beit saidtoEngland'shonour,byCatholicEmancipationactsand laterreforms.Nodoubt,there isstillacertainamountofdiscriminationexercisedagainstCatholicsinEnglandincertaindepartments-youneverhear,for instance,ofaCatholicCabinet Ministerthere,andtheCatholic parliamentaryrepresentatioinis small-butstillIdon'tthinkthat Catholicsconsidertheyhaveno sayinthepublicaffairsoftheir country.Duringthelastwar, itwastheCatholicCardinal Hinsley,towhosevoice,nextto thatofWinstonChurchill,Eng landlistenedwithgreatesteagernessanddeepestfeelinginher hourofstress.Catholicintellectuallifeflourishes,andadistinguishedCatholicweekly,"The Tablet,"isoneofthemostwidelyreadpublicationsinEnglish educatedcircles.

Idon'tthinkthatweinAustralia,orotherCatholicselsewhereintheEmpire,aremuch worriedbythefactthatthe ltoyalFamilyofEnglandisProtestant.Weshouldpreferthat ourkingsshouldbeallowedto choosetheirreligionforthemselves,ratherthanhaveitregulatedforthembystatuteof Parliament,butstillwedonot makeanycomplaintaslongas ourownloyaltyisrecognisedand ourfreedomtoliveourCatholiclivesbothinprivateandin publicisguaranteed.AndI thinkwecansaythatthesere quirementsare,inthemain, Ishouldadd,inconclusion,thatweCatholicsinthis centuryhavecausetobegrateful totheBritishEmpireforthe freedomandprotectionithasaffordedourmissionstothepagan peoples,andtotheunderstandingandapprovalwithwhichit hasgenerallyviewedthatimport. antwork.

Itwouldbeabsurdtospeak abouttheChurchasbeingopposedtoindividualism,unlessyou meanbyindividualism"private judgment"inreligion.Catholics agreeaboutthedogmasoftheir faith,andtheydisagreemerrily aboutalmosteverythingelse underthesun.Inthesedays whenmovementslikeCommunism,NazismandFascism,have mergedtheindividualinthe mass,orclassornation,itisthe CatholicChurchWhichhaschiefly stoodouttoinsistonthedignity andinviolablerightsoftheperson.Evenincountriesthat havenotbeendominatedbyCommunismandtheothermovements Imentioned,thenotionhasgainedgroundthatindividualsexist fortheState.ItistheCatholic Churchthatinsiststhatthe Stateexistsfortheindividuals.
Itinsists,inparticular,onthe rightsofthefamilyagainstthe domineeringStateofmodern times.
EFFECTSOFMECHANISATION.
IfAmericansarereallylosing thecioggedindividualismwhich ProfessorPerryadmits,itisprooablyduereallytotheincreased mechanisationoftheage.Insteadofthinkingforthemselves, somanypeoplehavetheiropinionspoundedintothem,dayafter day,ready-made,frompressand radio.Fashionsofthoughtare setup,andtheyseemtobeas irresistibleasfashionsindress, andalmostasshort-lived.Clever propagandistscan"condition,"as theysay,themindsofthemasses andworkupontheiremotions andtastesalmostatwill.Isupposethat,withthespeedat whichtheaveragemodernAmerican(andnotonlytheAmerican)lives,itisbecomingvery hardtocultivateadeeppersonal life,withopinions,habits,tastes anddecisionsemergingnaturally fromwithinratherthanbeing thrustonamanfromwithout. Butitisthecultivationofthe interiorlife,ineverysenseofthe word,thattheCatholicChurch encourages-andevendemands. Inclosinghisaddress,the speakeraskedhislistenerstorememberthatthepresentstrength oftheChurchinAustraliawas duetothefervouroftheearly pioneersofacenturyago.We shouldcontinuetheirworkand rememberthatwearepartofthe ChurchMilitant.Ourobligationistomakeourownfaithac tiveandvital,andtobeeveron thelookoutforopportunitiesto helpsavethesoulsofourfellowteen,aswellastosecureourpersonalsanctification.

Undoubtedly,toappreciatethe playfullyoneneedstobeconversantwiththeconventionsof Elizabethandrama,andpossibly someknowledgeofthehistory ofthedrama,withparticularreferencetothelateShakespearianera,isalsonecessaryforan optimumappreciationofthis productofBeaumontandFletcher.Nevertheless,thefairly largeandrepresentativeaudiencewhichattendedtheopening nightgaveevidencebyitscontinualapplausethatenjoyment oftheplayisnotlimitedto thosewithanacademicbackgroundtohelpthem.

Itisdishearteningbutnotsurprisingtoreadinthe cablesthataSocialistPartycongressinParishascalledfor theabrogationoftheGovernmentdecreewhichgrantedindirectandpartialfinancialaidtotheChurchschools.This longoverduemeasureofsocialjusticewasacompromise agreementwhichwasvotedinbyanarrowmarginbythe coalitionCabinetofPremierSchuman.Itwasonthe basisofcompromisethattheSocialistsagreedtoitafter twodaysandnightsoffrenziednegotiations.Itisnot, therefore,aprettypicturetohaveaplenarysessionofthe Partydissentingfromthedecisionoftheircomradeswho holdexecutivepoliticaloffice.TheniggerinthewoodpileseemstohavebeenM.LeonBlum,whoappealedto congresstoreverseitsresolutiononthegroundsthathe waspersonallyhorrifiedbythedecision.YetBlumis preciselythetypeofmanwhobroughtFrancetoherknees nationallyandmorallybyhispublicadvocacyoflibertinism.HerepresentstheOldGuardwhowere,however unconsciously,concernedinthebetrayaloftheircountry.

DrawnbyGodtothecloister, heenteredat12thehistoric MonasteryofMontserrat,and, havingaspecialtasteformusic, beganhisreligiouslifeintheattachedschoolformusic(Esc9lania),wherehelearnedtoplay andsingwiththerestofthe schoolboystotheMadonnaof Montserratenthronedonher beautifulaltar.Passingafterwardstothenovitiate,hetook hisreligiousvowswhenhewas 17.Here,undertheshadowat. thefamousabbey,hegrewfrom youthtoage,consciously,no doubt,fosteringadevotionfor themissions,forin1900,onthe occasionofBishopSalvado'svisit toMontserrat,heofferedhimself andwasacceptedforthefar-off Australianmission.TheBishop havingdiedattheendofthat year,FatherPlanas,withaparty e.e\en,underthecommandof Dr.Torres,reachedNewNorcia April,1901,andbeganduties asorganistoftheCathedraland manageroftheEstablishment.

Theyearsfollowinghisreturn fromtheKimberleys,inOctober, 1911,weretomarkalongperiod ofafruitfulparochialapostolate.Afterthreeyearsasthefirst chaplainandmusicteacherofSt. Ildephonsus'College,hewasappointedtoMoorein1916,to Goomallingin1918,andto SouthernCrossin1922.Here heremainedfor22years"nailed totheCross,"touseoneofhis favouriteexpressions,andsucceededinbuildingtheChurchof OurLadyofMontserrat,accordingtothepleasingdesignot FatherGusi,himselfamonkot Montserrat.

FIDELITYTOTASK.
Itcertainlydidnotdisappear duringthefirstfewcenturies. Duringthattimeyoucanseethe Churchvigorouslyandmanfully carryingoutitstask,goingforth toteachallnations,andnotto teachthemopinionsortheories orpersonalversionsoftruth, buttoteachwhatChristhad taught,andtoteachthatdefinitelyandclearlyandwiththefull weightofChrist'sauthority.The firstCounciloftheChurchin Jerusalemannounceditsdecisionswiththeresoundingformula:"Ithasseemedgoodtothe HolySpiritandtous...."And St.Peter,thefirstheadofthe Church,wasnotafraidtospeak about"falseteachers"and"heresies.'NorwastheChurchof thoseearlycenturiestimidor diffidentabouttellingfirstone breakawaysectandthenanother thattheywereheretics:First Gnostics,thenArians,thenPelegians,Nestorians,andsoon. Challengedforitsauthorityto saywhatwasandwhatwasnot heresy,itcouldanddidappeal tothemandateofChristandto theenduringApostolicsuccession intheRomanSee.
CONTINUITY.
TheChurch,then,whichChrist foundedandtowhichHegavethe rightanddutyofpreservingHis teachinginviolate,didnotdisappearduringthosefirstcenturies. Hasitdisappearedsince?Ifit has,thenChrist'spromisethat HisChurchwouldbeperetual andthatHewouldbewithittill theendoftime,hasbeeninvain. Ontheotherhand,ifyoulook aboutyouforaChurchwhich reallyactsastheChurchofthe ApostlesandtheChurchofthe
earlycenturiesacted,thenyou willonlyseeone.Andthat ChurchistheChurchoftheApostlesandtheChurchoftheearly centuriescarriedonthrough time,continuous,unbrokenand divinelyenergeticeventothis day.Ithadnomorehesitation incallingthedenialoftheMass heresyatthetimeoftheReformationthanithadincallingthe denialofChrist'sdivinityheresy inthefourthcentury,orthedenialofChrist'shumanityheresy inthesecondcenturyorthefirst.
DEFINITION.
Ihavenotyettoldyouexactly whatheresyis.WhatIhavealreadysaidshouldhelpyoutounderstandwhatIamnowgoingto say.Heresyisthepersistent denialbyabaptisedpersonwho stillkeepsthenameofChristian ofthatFaithwhichhasbeenrevealedbyGodandhasbeenrepoundedtomenandtaughtas partofrevelationbyChrist's Church.Inpractice,heresyis whatitsGreeknamesuggests:it isachoosingofpartoftheChristianbodyofbelieftotheexclusionofotherparts.Whenmen saythattheybelievethatChrist foundedaChurchbutdidnot giveitanypowerofconferring sacraments,thatisheresy,and theCatholicChurchsayssoin unmistakableterms.Thatisthe wayithasalwaysacted,witha consciousnessofitsdivinemandateoperativenowandetany pointinthelongcenturiesasit VaswhenChristfirstgaveit.
NOJUDGMENTOFDESTINY.
Tobringthismattertoaclose. TheChurchdefineswhatishereeyanditcondemnsitwhenit appears.Butitdoesnotpars judgmentonallwhofollowheresy.Thegreatmajorityof hereticsdonotrecognisethemselvesassuch.Theydonotsee theCatholicChurchforwhatshe is,andtheydonotseedeparture fromherdoctrinesasheresy. Thatmeansthattheyholdtheir heresyingoodfaith.Presumably, iitheyknewittobeheresythey wouldgiveitup.Thatdoes notmakethemanythe ticsinthetechnicalsense,butit doesmeanthattheymaywellbe blamelessinthesightofGod. Theirbeliefswillbevitiatedin certainways,buttheirwillsmay hefirmlydirectedtoGod.Catholicswillthenoftenreferto theirdoctrineasheretical,but theywilldosowithoutanyimplicationofpersonalreproach,and abovealltheywillnotpresume tosaytowhatdestinysoulsof suchpeoplearetending.

Thepoorestofthepoor,whose savingshavebeenwipedoutby thenewlawdecreedbytheoccupationalauthorities,willdependonthefewstillinapositiontohelp,theseofficialsdeclare.Particularlyhomesfor theagedandsanitarianowface aprecariousfuture,butevery effortwillbemadetosupport them.
