PARIS,June14.-Byanarrowmargin,thecoalition CabinetofPremierSchumanhasweatheredthecrisis broughtonbythequestionofpublicaidtoChristian schools.
Aftertwodaysandnightsoffrenziednegotiation,SocialistmembersoftheCabinethaveagreedtoacompromise permittingrestrictedpublicaidtochildrenattendingthe Christianschools.
Everyeffortwasmadeto avoidaCabinetsplitinviewof thesix-PowerLondonaccordson WesternGermanywhichhave beenacceptedbytheCabinet andarenowpendingforratificationbeforetheNationalAssembly.TheaccordshavebeenattackedbyGeneraldeGaulleon therightandbyCommunist leadersontheleft.
Detailsofthecompromiseon theschoolissuehavenotbeen madlepublic,butitisbelieved thatthesolutionagreedonlinks insomewaypaymentof'subsidies"tochildrenattendingChris-

NUREMBERG,June18.-(By Radio).-HisHolinessPopePius XII.deservesprincipalcreditfor savingRomefrontdestructionin 1943,whenRomewasdeclared anopencityaccordingtothetestimonyofBaronErnstvonWeissaecker.formerGermanAmbassadortotheHolySee,whois beingtriedhere'onwarcrime chargesbeforeanInternational MilitaryTribunal.
BaronWeizsaeckerwhoacted atthetimeasanintermediary betweenVaticanauthoritiesand theGermanyarmysaidthatfailureoftheseeffortsmighthave ledtothedestructionofthe EternalCity.Healsoasserted thatbutforthelettersofprotectionwhichhe(Weizsaecker) issuedtoreligioushousesin Rome,1,000Jewishrefugees fromalliedcountries,whohad foundshelterinthesebuildings, mighthavefallenintothehams oftheGestapo.Hefurther claimedthathismeasuresprotectedpricelessworksofartand librariesfromdestruction.

AccordingtoBaronWeizsaecker'stestimony,theformerField MarshalKesselring,thencommanderofGermanforcesin Italy,deservesparticularcredit, aftertheHolyFather,forthe successoftheeffortstosave Rome. BaronWeizsaeckertoldthe tribunalthathehadunofficial ..iscussionswithAlliedofficials, includingWilliamJ.Donovan, Americanintelligencechief,and thelateHughR.Wilson,whoat onetimewasU.S.Ambassador toGermany,regardingthepossibilityofanagreementonpeace termsbetweentheAlliesand Germany. PUBLICDEMONSTRATION.
ActiveprotestbytheCatholic peopleintheseregions,manifestingitselfinpublicdemonstrations,refusaltopaytaxes onentertainmentsandfairsheld tosupporttheChristianschools, and,finally,bythestrikeofthe municipalauthorities, has broughtaboutthepresenttemporarycompromiseallowing some"subsidies"tochildrenattendingtheChristianschools.

ThecompromisehasbeenworkedoutonthebasisofanordinanceadoptedinMarch,1945,allowingfamilyassociationstoreceiveanddistribute"subsidies" inaidoffamilies.Premier Schuman'sactioninauthorising theMinisteroftheFamily, Mme.Poinso-Chapuis,todispense throughthesefamilyassociations "subsidies"forchildrenattendingChristianschoolscreateda violenttumultamongmilitant anti-clericals.ThePremieravoideddebateontheissueaslongas possible,butwhenthematter couldnotlongerbepostponed,it waswidelyexpectedthatthe problemwouldcausethedownfalloftheSchumanCabinet.

Whiletheissueofpublicfinancialaidtothedenominational schoolsisanimperativedemand ofjustice,andonewhichwould redoundenormouslytothecredi'. ofagovernmentwhichhadthe wisdomandstrengthtoputit through,thesystemofreligions educationitselfneedsconstant revisioninthefast-changirg tempoofmodernlife.Thatis nottoimplythatweoughtto embarkonthekindofeducationalempiricismwhichamoule, tolittlemorethanmentalaberration.Thereisagreatdent moretobesaidforthanagainst thrretentionoftraditionalmethodsinpedagogy.But,att,le
sametime,thereislibertytoreflectthatthosewell-wornpaths wetreadservedbestwhenthe worldatlargewasathoughtful placewhereinmenweremore generallyguidedbytheirintellectsthanbytheiremotions.Todayweareinthethroesofarevolution.Whetherweliketo admititornot,reasonhasbeen eethronedandnothinginlifeis moreirrationalthanthesecular systemofeducation.OnceGod V,asremovedfromeducationits wholedirectionwaslost.Itbecameaprocesswithoutaconsummation.
INDIVIDUALSTRUGGLE. Buthow,itmaybeasked,dues thisaffectthechildintheCatholic,school?Hiswholeeducation forlifeisintegratedwithreligion.Truly,buthislifeis livedintheworldinwhichthe majorpartofsocietyhashad:no religiouseducation.Thereligiousidealsofthechildassortodd lywiththeambitionsofthe world.Wheremoney,position Jaipleasurearethethingstobe reckonedwith,theChristianis "oddmanout."Freshfromthe richatmosphereofaCathotie school,theyoungsterfindshint selfanapparentmisfitinasocietywhichistryingtoliveby breadalone.Certainlyitseems noplaceforthatmilitantapostolicitywhichisinthenatureof tileFaith.Thereisaveryunderstandabletemptationtohide thepearlofgreatprice.Notin frequentlythereiscompromise andthediscouragementofdefeat.Mostfatally,theresetsin acomplacentapathy,reflectedin awillingnesstoleadtheminimumreligiouslife.Certainly withthemodernorganisationof CatholicyouththroughCatholic ActionthesedangerscantIe minimised.Buttheycannotbe eliminated,becauseitisnotposible,evenifitisdesirable,to rearyoungpeopleina"hothouse"atmosphere.Ultimatelythebattleisanindividual one.

Frankly,"DeathandTransfiguration"seemstome"cinema" music,evenwhenplayedbya fullscaleorchestra,andIthink theprogrammeannotationsdid Straussaninjusticeinreferring toitasbelongingtothecone poser's"bestperiod."Theprogrammevalueofthe"Death" sceneis excellent,butthe "Transfiguration"themehasan adolescentlackofspirituality aboutitthatrobsthissectionof anyclimaxworthyofthetitle. Thedeficiencesofthethematic materialarecovereduptoa greatdegreebyStrauss'slush orchestration,butwiththethinningoutofthevarioussections onSaturdaynightthegawky sentimentalityofthecomposers idealblushedatitsexposure. Bothconductorandorchestra strovemanfullytoclothethe workinfittingraiment,butthe clothwasnottheretobecut.
Asonewhoisnotsufficiently familiarwiththeIbertConcerto tobesureofhisgroundindetectingfaults,andwiththeproviso thatIenjoyedthisworkimmensely,Ithoughttheorchestrawas alittleunsureofitselfinthe openingpartofthefirstmovement.Fromthenontheeoo..k movedsmoothly,andwasade-
lighttotheear.Theorchestrationismodern,withatypical Frenchcrispnessandaquality ofsilverfiligree.Thesecond movementwaswarmandlyrical, andthelastgaveRichardChugg plentyofopportunitytodemonstratehisamazingvirtuosity. ThewholeConcertoiswritten withasensitiveappreciationof thecapabilitiesandtonequality oftheflute,andthesoloistgave amostpolishedperformance, withawarmthofcolourinthe lowerregisterwhichIhaveseldomheard.Therewasnever theslightestsuggestionofthe breathinesssocommontothisinstrument,andhisperfectcontrol madelightofthetechnncaldifficultiesofphrasingwhichcan'so easilymartheperformancesut longsolopassages.
Theprogrammeopenedwith Mozart'ssparklinglittleOvertureto"TheMarriageofFigaro' -awar-horse,butonewiththe kindofcharmwhichencourages repetition.Thestringworkin thisofferingwasdelightful,but thewoodwindsectionwasatrifle "muddy"attimes,andthistendedtodragtheensemblebackto thepedestrianlevel.
Haydn'sSymphonyNo.85("Le Rene")wasprobablychosenas fittingthesizeandlimitationsor theorchestra,butalthough Haydn'smusiccallsforasmall orchestra,itmusthaveperfest co-ordinationandbeautifultone. ThefirstmovementwentoiT well,andthelovelyRomanzewas delightfullyexecutedaftera ratherscratchybeginning.In theothertwomovementsthe qualitywaspoorattimes,but theorchestraplayedbetterasan ensemble.Altogether,thiswas thebestworkofthenight,apart fromtheConcerto. Thefirstactwasnotexciting; infact,itauguredratherbadly fortherestoftheshow.The presentcompanyisnotrich goodvoices,andthecomedy, withoutFredMurray,istrite.I roundColinCroft,asLeopold, theheadwaiter,notamusing; thoughIadmittherewill be somecontroversyastohisvalue asacomedian.Somepeople likehim;butIdonot.There vanscarcelybeanydispute,however,astohisvoice.It'sas roughasaband-saw,andhe madehardworkoftunefuland well-knownnumbers,suchas"It WouldbeWonderful"and"The Legionary."
Inthesecondactthenon-stop lowningofFredMurraygavea decidedlifttotheshow.As SigismundSmithhecarriedall Leforehimininimitablestyle. Hemakescomedylooksoeasy thatsomepeoplemaybetempt edtodismisshisworklightly; butittakesyearsofpracticeas wellasenterpriseandconfide/le, toattainMr.Murray'sstandard ,,ftomfoolery.Hisclowningis highlypolishedbecauseofhis masteryoftechnicaldevices;this completemasteryenableshimto proceedatlightningspeed;and addedtoskillisadelightful dressingcompoundedoutofhis livelyimaginationandsplit-secondinitiative.Thewholeisa poeminslapstick;andunless you'vegotsomethingwrongwith yourliver,you'vegottolaugh. Hispersonalityisinfectiously gay,notbombastic.
SPECTACLE.
Itwasinthesecondact,too, thatonebegantofeelthefull weightoftheproductionsideof thisrevivalofashowfamousfor itsspectacle.Inthisregardwe weretreatedingenerousmeta Sure.Costumeswerecolourful, variedandauthentic.Scenery wasimposingandever-changing. Therevolvingstage-specialyinstalledfortheoccasion-funstionedtogoodeffect,and,inthe finale,providedamerry-go-round summaryofthemainscenes. Threelife-sizerhythmicalcows, arealgoat,awheeledconveyancemovingacrossstage-these thingstookusbacktothosefae off,almostlegendary,dayswhen itwasnotimpossibletohavea realhorse-racethroughthetheatre.
MAINIMPRESSIONS.
Itwasagoodstageshow. I thought,beforegoingalong, thatJ.C.WiliamsonLtd. couldnotgowronga4thashow like"TheWhiteHorseInn," famousforitsgrandeur,colour, andmusicalscore.Theydidn't. Everyonewenthomesatisfied.
Itwasclearerthaneverbefore,however,thatthepresent companyhasonlyoneortwo singersofnote.AlbertChappelleandMiriamLesterwerethe onlybrightspotsamongthe voices.Thechoruseslacked balance,andthatringingquality sonecessarytodofulljusticeto thepopularscore.
Thecomedywaswellhandled byFredMurray,BobbyMack, BettySparks,ColinCroft (?i, andothers.TheTyroleandancers-menparticularly-madea goodimpression.-DEGUSTIBUS.
"IheGreatestShowonEarth"
The1948performanceof"The GreatestShowonEarth"(asthe ultramodestadverts.ofWirth's Circustermit),cannowbeseen attherearoftheChristianBrothers'College.
Wirth'sCircususedtobea reallywonderfulshow.Ican stillrememberperformancesot manyyearsago,whenyouthful imaginationwaskindledbythe sights,soundsandsmellsofthe circus.
WirthBros.mustalsolook backtothoseolddayswhentin circuswastheMeccaofyoung andoldformilesaround.Their presentshowcannot,anddoes not,comeuptothestandardof theirearlierpresentations.It can,however,beclassedasa iseasantnight'sentertainment, andseveralofthetwenty-three ukplaysareexcellent.
MadameKovar,withherfive lionsinthe"cageofdeath," broughtahushedquietonthe uoience.Itishardtosayhow muchofthegrowlsandgeneral wildbehaviouroftheanimals wasgenuine,butbythereactions oftheaudience(myselfincludbeautifulPreludewasfartoo harsh,andthefeelingofdeep broodingmelancholywasnut capturedatanystage.The DanceoftheApprenticeswas welldone,buttheProcessionof theMasterswasmarredbypoor qualityfromthebrassatthebeginning.Thisimprovedlater, andtheclimaxfoundthewhole orchestraenteringintothespirit ofWagner'striumphantmarch.
Afterhearingtheimprove] qualityofallsectionsatthepreviousconcertsconductedby lerips,theconclusionIdrewfront Saturdaynight'sperformance wasthat,fineaconductoras Gt,ossensundoubtedlyis,the PerthSymphonyneedssomeone dynamicandcolourfultodraw anyimaginativeplayingoutof it.Theyareateamwithlittle experienceofplayingtogether, anduntilthatdaycomesvisitingconductorswillalwaysfinda lackofcohesion,whichonlythe residentconductorcangaugs andallowfor.

Alargeaudience,aged18to26, packedtheCapitolTheatreon TuesdaynighttohearEugene GoossensconductthePerthSymphonyOrchestrainaprogramme ofworksbyhallowedandcontemporarycomposers. Thereisnodoubtaboutthe successoftheA.B.C.'senterprise inofferingafullscaleclassical programmetotheyoungpeople ofAustralia.Itisreallystimulatingtoseewelloverathousandyoungstersgatheredtogethertoenrichtheirmusical experience,anditisanencout agingsignoftheextraordinary interestofthepresentgenerationinclassicalmusicthatitis possible,nayevennecessary,to reserveatheatreofthesizeof theCapitolforaSymphonyConcerttopeopleofanagewhich, uptoafewyearsago,wasruled outofconsiderationwhenplanningsuchconcerts.
FromthebeginningMr.Goostensadoptedanairofinformality,andtheaudiencewascaptivatedbyhisdryhumour. Throughouttheeveningthelink betweenconductorandaudience waswarmandappreciative,and thebehaviouroftheyoungpeoplepresentwasanexampleto theirelders.Theattentivesilenceaccordedboththeconductor'sexplanationsandtheorchestra'splaying,andthespontaneousbutnotexaggeratedapplausewhichgreetedeachitem, showedasincereinterestand appreciationofthefareprovided.
Thebest-playeditemofthe eveningwastheopeningnumber, Nicolai's"MerryWivesofWindsor,"theworsttheBenjamin Britten"YoungPerson'sGuide totheOrchestra,"amostinterestingworkinitself,buta frightfulrevelationoftheinadequaciesofthevarioussections. RichardChugggavetwolovelynumbers,anarrangementofa HandelSonataforthelittleheardaltoflute,andHarty'sdelightfulphantasy,"InIreland."

Mr.DeRenroff,withhisfive Arabhorses,neithermeritednor receivedmuchappreciation.
Threeactswhichwecools classasfirstratewere:

IftheywerepackedofftoParis (theirsupposedplaceoforigin), theywouldnotbemissed,and theirplacecouldbefilledtoa muchbetteradvantage.

Theplayhadintrinsicfaults. Mostnoticeablewas the awkwarddisposalofexitsand entrances.Useofthecentre stagedidnotflownaturallyfrom playertoplayer.Onegrouptoo obviouslymadewayforthenext. Therewereprobablytoomany peopleinthecast,anyhow.
Thenagain,sub-plotsthreaten edtodistractattentionfromthe mainplot.Therewasenough materialintheplayforabook like"DavidCopperfield."The playwright'sintentionwasperhapstoemphasisethecentral issuebyprovidingcontrasts;but therewasarealdangerthatone mightn'tseethewoodforthe trees.
Themainplotitselfwas ratherpainfullyartificial.It wasextraordinarythatthegirl shouldmeetupimmediatelywith Dr.Flavel.Asonethinksabout it,otherdetailsdovetailtooreadilytobemerecoincidences.Anti theendingleftonedissatisfied. -DEGUSTIBUS.
