AftertheelectionofGottwald,CzechCommunistParty leaderandPrimeMinister,asPresidentoftheRepublic,on the14th.inst.,thePressreportedthatheattendedMass, celebratedbytheArchbishopofPrague(MostRev.Dr. Beran).Lestthisnewsitemshouldleadtothebeliefthat thereisanycompromiseintheattitudeoftheChurchtothe Redregime,thefollowingN.C.W.C.reportshouldbeilluminating:-

ThedeterminationoftheBishopsofCzechoslovakiatobar priestsundertheirjurisdiction fromholdingpoliticaloffice,is expressedinlettersbyArchbishopJosephBeran,ofPrague,to theMinisterofJustice,antitoa priestwhoholdsaCabinetpost asMinisterofHealth.

Theseletters,thetextof v;hichhasjustbecomeavailable, statethattheBishopswillupholdtheirattitude"underail circumstances,"andthatapriest violatingtheinjunctionwill therebyautomaticallyincursuspensionfromhisdivinefunction.

Whileitisnotyetknownhow theCommunist-dominatedPragueGovernmentwillreactto thesesteps,andwhetherthe priestmostdirectlyaffected-the Rev.JosefPlojhar,Ministerof Health-willtakemeasuresin ordertoretainhispriestly status,ithasbeenlearnedthat theCatholicweekly"Rozcevak"

("TheSower"),publishedbythe ArchdiocesanCuriaofOlomouc, hasbeensuppressed.Thepaper hasacirculationof200,000.

Furthermore,VaticanRadio announcedthatArchbishop Reranhasbeenforbiddenbythe PragueGovernmenttoprintlettersorcircularswithoutpreviousauthorisationandthatthe multigraphingmachineinhis officehasbeenconfiscated.

Secularpressagencyreports fromPraguequoteFatherPlojharassayingthatthePrague Governmentwouldnotmakeany concessionstotheCatholic Church"untiltheChurchhas givenfinalproofofitspositive attitudetowardtheGovernment."Heissaidtohaveaddedthat"unfortunately,it(the church)hasnotyetdoneso." Heisalsoreportedasdenying thathehasbeensuspendedfrom hisreligiousfunctionsorthreatenedwithexcommunicationifhe shouldremaininofficeunderthe CommunistGovernment.

ArchbishopBeran'sletterto FatherPlojhar,whichwasdated May21,ninedaysbeforethe rigged"elections"oftheCzechslovakparliament,wasasfollows:

"Sincenewsisspreatingto theeffectthatIhaveallowed youtoofferyourselfasacandi-

TheCatholicpublications affectedbythemeasure are:CatholicDigest,"CatholicHerald,"and"CatholicTimes."Thebanwas announcedherebyBritish postalauthorities.

Mr.EamondeValeraconcludedhisAustraliantourwitha visittoDarwin.Hearrivedby HythflyingboatfromBowenon 10th.inst.Thevisitorswere metattheAirportbyRev. FatherFrankFlynn,M.S.C., P.P.;Mr.Swiney,R.N.,andRev. FatherMcAlister,ofLongreach, Queensland,whoistravelingto Ireland.Aninformalwelcome wasgiveninthepresbytery grounds,wtereMr.deValera metmanywell-wishers.Hewas entertainedtoafternoonteaby theladiesoftheparish.

Mr.deValeraplantedatreeon thesiteoftheproposedWar MemorialShrine.Itwasplac-

ednearthetreeplantedrecently byHisEminenceCardinalSpe'!man,ofNewYork. Thevisitorsweretakenona tourofsomeo?thebeautyspes ofDarwin,antianinspectionwas madeofthewardamagetothe ChurchofSt.Mary's,Starof theSea,andotherbuildingsin thetown,andavisitwasmade totheConvent. Beforehisdeparture,Mr.de ValerawasentertainedtodinnerbyMr.R.R.Swiney,R.N., Officer-in-ChargeofCoonawarra NavalStation,andMrs.Swims,. Mr.deValeraandMr.Aitken leftDarwinat4.30am,onFriday,June11th.,1948.

Asecondletterwasaddressed byArchbishopBerantoAlexej Cepicka,MinisterofJustice.The letter,datedMay25,said:

"TheCatholicBishops,assemSledatanextraordinaryconfer enceinPragueonMay24,wish toinformyouasfollowswith regardtothecandidacyof priestsandtothematterofthe Minister,FatherPlojhar,which hasbeentreatedbytheCommitteeforEcclesiasticalandReligiousAffairs.

"TheBishops,havingthoroughlyexaminedthematter, statethattheyareunableto changetheirpresentattitude thatCanon139,section2of CanonLaw,isfundamentalwitn respecttotheappointmentof priestsbothasministersand commissioners.

"Regardingcandidaciesfor Parliament,theBishops,inaccordancewithsection4ofsaid canon,cannotgivetheirpermission,becausepriestsasmembersofParliamentmightincur thedangerofhavingtovotefor legislationthatrunscounternot onlytoCanonLawbutalsoto naturalanddivinelaw.Moreover,withregardtoelections, thedutiesimposedbyconscience andbyreligiousandmoralprinciples-dutiesthatimposecertaindutiestowardstheStale andthepeople-arewellknown toCatholics.

"TheBishopsrequestthatthi,, theirfundamentalattitudewhich theywillalwaysupholdunder allcircumstances,benotconsideredasanegativeattitudetowardtheGovernment,but ratherasasinceredesiretoserve thewelfareofthepeopleinaccordancewitharighteouscon. science.

"Therefore,theCatholicBishopeforacontinuanceoffruitfulcollaboration-whichisabsolutelynecessaryinthese times-formoralandeconomic reconstruction,forthestrengtheningofourdearRepublic,and fortheprestigeoftheStatein theinternationalfield.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, June10.-(NC).-Followingrescindingofanorderpromulgated400yearsago,prohibitingthe ringingofCatholicchurchbells inLausanne,thebellsoftheCatholicChurchofNotreDame haverungoutandreceivedin welcominganswerthesoundof thebellsoftheProtestant ChurchofSt.Francis.Theorderwaspromulgatedin1530, whenalltheCatholicchurchesin thedistrictofVaud,including theLausanneCathedral,were takenoverbyProtestants.It wasnotuntil1835thataCatholicchurchedificewaspermitted. SincethattimethreeotherCatholicparisheshavebeenfounded,buttheprohibitionagainst ringingofCatholicbellscontinuedtilltherecentliftingofthe ancientban.

JERUSALEM,June8.-Radio,delayed).-Amortarbomb struckthemaindomeoftheChurchoftheHolySepulchredirectlyoverthetombofChrist,piercingtheouterwallofthechurch butcausingonlyminordamagetotheinteripr.ThechurchisadministeredjointlybyrepresentativesoftheCatholicandtheOrthodoxChurches.

AmortarbombalsostrucktheFranciscanChapeloftheCondemnation,markingtheplacewhereChristwascondemnedby Pilate,andanotherstruckneartheEcceHomoChapelbuiltonthe spotwhereOurLordstoodwhenPilateutteredthosewords.The explosionsmashedthestained-glasswindows,butdidnootherdamagebecauseofthemassivestoneconstructionofthechapels.Both chapelsarelocatedonthegroundsoftheFranciscanBiblicalSchool alongtheViaDolorosa.

OthermortarshellshitSt.Saviour'sMonasteryagain,the MotherHouseoftheFranciscansoftheHolyLand,andalsorefugee-filledCasaNova,apilgrimhouseconductedbytheFranciscansneartheMonastery.

Onlyashortwhilebeforethetrucewentintoeffect,abomb explodedneartheArmenianCatholicshrineattheFourthStation oftheCross,injuringtwopersons.

ChristiansinJerusalemviewsadlytheirdamagedHolyPlaces, churches,convents,schoolsandhospitals,andcounttheirdeadand wounded-innocentvictimsofthestrifethathasragedintheHoly City.

AmongtheChristianinstitutionsdstroyedduringthefighting isthebuildingoftheApostolicDelegation,whichwasburned.

RedsMartyr 31Trappists inChina

PEIPING,China,June10.SixmoreTrappistmonkshave diedatthehandsofChinese Communists,eitherbyexecutionorasaresultofmaltreatment,accordingtoinformation receivedhere. Thisbringsto31thenumber ofTrappistpriestsandbrothers, formerlyofYangkiapingAbbey, ravagedbytheRedsinJuly, 1947,knowntohavebeenkilled bytheCommunists.Itraises thetotalnumberofCatholic missionersknowntohavebeen killedbytheChineseRedsstice theendofthewartoatleast 90.Besidesthese,manylay Catholicshavebeenslainbythe Reds,somepreciselyfortheir Catholicreligion.

Accordingtoinformationreceivedhere,twoTrappistpriests, theRevs.TheodoreYuan,38year-oldChinese,andMaurus Bougon,48-year-oldFrenchman, werekilledatMuchiachung earlyinFebruary.Newsof theirdeathcomesfromnonCatholicswhohadbeenimprisonedwiththem.Exactdetails oftheirexecutionarescanty; however,itisbelievedtheywere stoned.

TheotherfourTrappistswho metdeathbelongtoagroupof sevenwhowiereostensiblygiven

theirfreedomafterbeingtaken fromthemainprisonattheend ofSeptember.Howeverthey wereactuallytakentoaseries ofsqualidgaols,accordingto wordreceivedherefromthreeof thegroupwhogainedfreedom InApril.Thesethreetoldof thedeathoftheotherfourin thegroup:theRev.SimonHsu, 48,andBrothersHugoFan,68; IrenaeusWang,60,andMartin Hsu,50. FatherHsudiedofhungerand coldnearYuhsieninDecember, afterthreemonthsofimprisonmentandtwomonthsofforced labour.BrotherFandiedin OctoberatWoyangtaiofblood poisoning,causedbythefesteringwoundsinhishandswhich hadbeentiedwithwire.BrotherHsudiedinNovemberat Chataohooftuberculosisaggravatedbyforcedlabour,exposure andmalnutrition.

Ofthe19Trappistpriests whomtheCommuniststookcaptivelastfall,15arenowknown tobedead.Ofthe56Brothers inthecommunity16havecertainlydied.Fourteenarestill presumedtobealiveinRedterritory.Theresthavebeing formedintoacommunitynear Peipingwheretheyoperatea dairy.

HisGraceArchbishopMarIvanios,ofTrivandrum, India,whowasinPerthrecentlyastheguestofDr. Prendiville,wasformerlyaBishopoftheSchismaticJacobiteChurchofSouthIndia.Makinghissubmissionto Romein1930,hewasafterwardsconsecratedasArchbishopMetropolitanofthenewbranchoftheCatholic Church-there-unitedSyroMalankareseChurch.There arenowoverahundredpriestsunderhimcaringformore thanfifty-eightthousandsouls.

Ivaniosisalivingsermonupon theUnityoftheChurchof Christ,andtheMasshecelebratedbroughthomebetterthan anythinghecouldhavesaid,howl ourHolyMothertheChurch, whileinsistinguponunityindoctrine,inSacraments,andinthe SacrificeoftheNewLaw,yet showsgreatbroadnessofmind, andfosterswithinherbosom manyritesorliturgies,allowing theessentialactofSacrifie¢tobe surroundedbydifferingsymbolic ceremonies.WeareallacquaintedwithourownRite,the Latin,Rite,butfewofusever havetheopportunityofassisting atanyoftheOrientalRites.

VESTMENTSANDLANGUAGE

Fromthefirst,theRiteof ArchbishopMarIvaniosstruck thenoteoftheunusual,andeven thestrange;itwasonlyafterwards,whenonecametothink overallthathadbeensaidfain done,thattheessentialunityof theLatinandtheMalankara Ritesappeared,sometimesin mostunexpecteddetails.The veryappearanceoftheArchbishopwasunusual,withhisdark skinandhisbushybeard;he woreuponhisheadthe"diadem' -asortofturban-thecurves ofwhichremindedoneofthe gracefullinesofthedomesofthe TajMahalintheArchbishop's nativeIndia;hispastoralstaff wasnottheshepherd'scrookof theWest,butwasasilverstaff surmountedbytwohandsome cobraswroughtingoldwith smallredrubiesfortheireyes. Perhapsthestrangestelementof allwasthelanguage-theancientAramaic,thelanguageofOur Lord;thelanguagereadsfrom righttoleft,andbooksinthis languageareread,aswewould say,butfrombacktofront(not fromfronttoback):whetherrecitedorchanted,thevowelsand consonantssoundedmostunusual toourWesternears..(Aramaic istheliturgicallanguageofthe ChristiansoftheMalabarcoast, becausetheywerefirstconverted byChristianmissionariesfrom Syria,wheretheRiteofSt. James-theJacobiteRite-was observed.ThiswasintheAramaictongue.)

TheArchbishophastheprivilegeofexplainingtheceremony asheproceeds,aprivilegethat he..usedquitefreelyforourinstructionandedificationthrough outtheMass.

SACREDVESSELS.

Hecametothealtarpreceded bysomeseventeenassistants bearingallthatwasnecessaryfor theMass;thedeaconbearingthe HolyGospelswasprecededbya server,whocontinuallyincensed theSacredWritings-totestify tothepeoplethatthecopyborne inprocessionwasfreefromall tamperingsofheretics.Onreachingthealtar,theArchbishoprel.! theGospel(inAramaic)andthen arrangedthealtarcloths,the corporals,andthesacredvessels (seveninall)fortheHolySacrifice.Thevesselsare:thechalice(justlikeours),anditscover; thepaten(whichisunlikeours inthatithasalipofabouta quarterofaninchhigharound theedge),andacoverforthe paten;inadditionthereisasmall goldenbowlforpurifications,a smallgoldenspoonwithabent handle,aboutthesizeofasma:i coffee-spoon,andthegolden lance,whichissomethinglikea small,narrowbutter-knife.Three largehosts,justlikeourown. wereplacedonthealtarforconsecration,andwhenwinehad beenpouredintothechalice,a smallquantityofwaterwas mixedwithitfromthegolden bowl.

THE"CLOUD."

Aftersomeincensations,the Archbishopprostratedhimself, hisforeheadtothegroundand hispalmsupwards,inadoration ofChristasKing.AttheOffe: tory,thebreadandwinewere raisedtoAlmightyGod,asinous Mass,buttheywerethentotally coveredwithalarge,whitesilk veilbearinguponitadove,torepresenttheHolyGhost;thisveil iscalled"theCloud,"forinthe SacredScriptures,Godoftenuses acloudbothtoappeartomenand toconcealHismajesty.

Aswithus,thereisaseriesof responses,includinganAramaic "SursumCords!"andaPreface. AttheConsecrition,theArchbishopheldbothcoveredchalice andcoveredpateninhishands, andrecitedthewordsofConsecrationinaloudvoice.After theConsecrationfollowedaceremonyfoundinmostOriental Rites,calledthe"Epiclesis,"or invocationoftheHolySpirit;in thistheArchbishopbroughthi.; handswithaflutteringmotion manytimesfromabovehishead downtothealtar,recitingappropriateprayers.Atallthese solemnpartsoftheMass,where wewouldusebells,theArchbishophadtwoservers(called"angels")makeacorresponding soundbyshakingfoursilver disksThesewereaboutnineinchesindiameterwithmanylittle metalbellshangingontheiroutsiderim;thesoundtheymade,he tolduswastorepresentthe rustlingofangels'wingsasthey hoveredaroundthealtar.During theCanon,itisusualintheMalankaraRitetocarrytheBlessed Sacramentdowntothebodyof thechurch,andfromthereto giveaBenediction;thiswasomittedinoursmallchapel,andinits place,theArchbishopgavethe Benedictionfromthealtar.Seven

species-bothbreadandwineandthemethodintheMalankara Riteisasfollows:TheArchbishopandhistwoassistantarchaeonsturntothepeopleatthe Communionrails,onearch-deacon bearingasacredvesselcontainingconsecratedhosts,andthe otherbearingthechalicecontainingthePreciousBloodconsecratedattheMass.Thepeoplereceivefirstunderthespeciesof bread,justasinourRite,and thenwaitintheirplacestillthe ArchbishopgivesthemthePreciousBlood.Takingthegolden spoonandalittlegoldenbowl fullofwater),andaccompanied bythearchdeaconwiththechalice,hedipsthespoonintothe chalice,andholdingthehowlbeneaththechinoftheCommunicant,carefullypoursthePrecious Bloodintohismonth,taking painstoavoidtouchingthetongueoranyotherpartofthe mouthwiththespoon.The spoonispurifiedeachtimein thebowlof'water,andattheend ofalineofCommunicants,he givesthelastpersonthebowlto drink,andfillsitagainwith waterforthenextrow.Toeach communicant,ashereceivesCommunion,hespeaksaformulain Aramaic.Whenthepeoplehave thusreceivedHolyCommunion,

Perhapsthemostinteresting partofthewholeRiteisthe BreakingoftheHost.TheArch';shopuncoveredthepaten,and takingthesmallgoldenlance, 'roceededtodividetheSacred Host.Hefirstcutofftwosmall piecesaboutthesizeandshapeof athumb-nail;oneofthesehe placedinthesacredchalice,as wedoinourRite;hethencut theSacredHostintothreelarge sectionsofpeculiarshape,oneto representtheBodyofOurLord upontheCross,theothertwoto representHissacredlegs;the othersmallpiecefirstbrokenoff wastorepresentHisHead.These fourpieceshethenarrangedcareullyuponthepaten,andthey formedafigureremarkablylike ahumanbody.Thentakingthe lance,hemadeasmallcutinthe placecorrespondingtotheheart, sayingthewords,"Forus,Thy Heartwaspierced."Thentakingthegoldenspoon,hetook someofthePreciousBloodfrom thechalice,andbeginningfrom theHeart,pouredItuponthe wholebody;thishedidthree times.Thisactionbecomesmore significantwhenweremember thattheoriginalwordsofthe Consecrationare:"ThisisMy Blood,whichisbeingshedfor you,untotheremissionofsins." InchurchesofhisownRite,dun ire.thispartoftheMass,acurtainisdrawnbetweentheSanctuaryandthebodyofthechurch, torepresentthethickdarkness onCalvaryatthedeathofOur Lord.

COMMUNIONCEREMONIES.

AftertheBreakingoftheHost, followedtheOurFather,recited bytheArchbishopinAramaic, andbyourselvesinLatin.DuringthispartoftheMass,when handlingtheSacredHost,the priestintheRomanRiteuses onlythethumbandtheindexfinger;theArchbishopusedthe palmofhishand,whichhewiped afterwardswithalinenpurifier. ttheCommunion,hetookthe othertwohoststhathadbeen consecrated,andplacedthemon topofthefirsthostwhichhad beenbrokenandmoistenedwitn thePreciousBlood;thethree wereconsumedtogether.Inour Rite,thepriestconsumesthe PreciousBloodimmediatelyafter takingthe.sacredHost,butthe Archbishopdidnotconsumethe PreciousBloodtillaftertheCommunionofthefaithful,forareasonthatwillimmediatelyappear ItheMalankaraRite,asintoe EasternRitesgenerally,thepeoplereceiveCommunionunderboth

AGAPE. TherestoftheMassisvery simple,Allthesacredvesselsare purifiedwithwineandwater,as inourownRite;careistakenof eventinyparticles,orofdrops ofthePreciousBlood.Itwas thecustomoftheearlyChristianstoholdthe"Agape,"or love-feast,inconnectionwiththe celebrationofMass;aremnant ofthisispreservedintheMalan- karaRite,forthedeacontakes aroundatraydistributingsmall piecesofordinaryun-consecratedbreadtothepeople.Whenst;thevesselshavebeenarranged, andallthealtarcloths away,theArchbishopdeparts fromthealtarashecame,pre- cededbyhisseventeenservers,andsingingtheChristianchantof joy,"Alleluia!"Beforeunvest ing,hereadsalastpassageof theGospels,kissesthebook,and givesittohisarchdeacontokiss. ThisistheendoftheMass.

Ihopethatthesewordswill givesomeideaofthestrangeness andyettheCatholicityofthe MalankaraRite.OurRiteseems almostausterewhencomparedwiththerichsymbolismofthe East,whichcanpresseventhefourchainsofthethuribleinro servicetoillustratethedogmas oftheThreePersonsintheTrinity,andofthetwonaturesin Christ.OurRomanRitehas beensubjecttomanyvicissitudes inthecourseofthecenturie,. andhasreachedusintheform withwhichwearesofamiliar; theMalankaraRite,whichhas hadpracticallynocontactwith theWestforsixteenhundred years,is,notwithstanding,essentiallythesameofours.Our LordgaveustheMassandthe PriesthoodattheLastSupper, andgavethecommand,"Dothis incommemorationofMe."Th.' UNIVERSALATHEISM.

Apartfromthesepre-requisites, whichhavebeenreiteratedtime andagaininPapalutterances anddocuments,CatholicAction calledfornewtechniquesofapproachtoaworldstartlingly

transformedinexternalsandutterlybewilderedbytheproblem ofmoraladjustment.The positionwassodifferentfrom thatwhichfacedtheChurchin thedaysoftheReformation (andfromtheeffectsofwhich theCatholiclifehadnotfullyrecovered),thatitistruetosayit representedanalmostcomplete reversal.TheChurchwasno longerdealingwithanoppositionwinchwasunabletoaccept supernaturaltruths.Itfaceda worldwhicheitherdeniedorwas totallyignorantofthosenatural religiousfactsuponwhichthe wholesupernaturalfabricisraisedasasuperstructure.Inthe realmoffaith,theChurchfor thefirsttimeinitshistoryhad tomeetthechallengeofuniversalatheism.

AMORALDILEMMA.

Yettheimplicationsofthat attackweremoralratherthan intellectual.Fewwereconcernedaboutreligiouscontroversy,leastofalltheintellectuals.ThemodernCatholic apologistcanscarcelyfindafoemanworthyofhissteel.Itis eolongeraquestionofwhat God-giventruthsthehuman mindcanbebroughttoaccept, butofwhatcanonsofChristian conductthehumanwillwillreceiveasbeingwithinthebounds ofpossibilitytoobserve. DespitetheVictoriandenialsthat therewasessentialinterdependencebetweenreligionandmorality,allofpost-Reformationhistorygoestoshowthatany whittlingawayofdogmatic Christiantruthendsfinallyin moralcollapse.

PeopleclaimthatCatholic failuretosuethebigotswhorun "TheRock"isinferentialproofof thepaptheydishout.Butthese samepeoplewouldbelievelike thingsifanattemptweremade tosuppressthemthroughlitigation.Ofcourse,thereareoccasionswhenretardedmentalde velopmentslipsdownintofrenzy andtheymustfallintothegrip ofthelawasintherecentcase withaCatholicteacherinNew SouthWales.Butthefactremainsthatallthelibellawin theworldwouldnotridtheir mindsofdistortion,ortheirwills ofbitternessandmalice.

POTENTIALCATHOLICS. Whatcanbedoneaboutthe confirmedbigot?Itisalto getheradifferentmatterfrom dealingwithCommunists.These peoplearenotatheists.They areChristiansofasort,althoueh theydonotappeartohaveheard ofChristiancharity.MostimportantlytheyarepotentialCatholics.Itwouldbeamost tragicthingifCatholicswere temptedtomeetbitternesswith bitternessandhatewithaided rancour.

Sohydra-headedandcatholic isthemodernaggressionthatit isnottobewonderedatifthe Churchhasseemedslowinjoiningthebattle.Moreover,the enemyhas,inagreatareaofthe politicalpower whichitisablephysicallytosuppresstheChurch.That,how ever,istoCatholicsnotthetragedyitappearstotheoutside world.Historyhastaughtus thatwherepersecutionisenduredwithfidelity,therethespirit ofChristisstrongandabiding. TosufferwithChristisapredelictionofvictory.Solongas theCrossofChristpressesheavilyonHisMysticalBody,all willbewell.Thisisthemajor erroroftheCommunisttactic.He mightdestroyuswiththebenevolenceandtoleranceoftheLiberals.Hecanonlyre-createus withthesword.

RE-DISCOVERYOFCHARITY.

Andinthisapparentcontradictionweshallfindthesecretat realetticacyinthisgreatestofall spiritualstruggles.Itisatruth recentlyre-discoveredforusby mensuchasMonsignorFulton SheenintheUnitedStates, FatherLombardiinItaly,and FatherilicquetinFrance.It consists,soarasIcansee,in treatingtheenemiesofthe ChurchpreciselyasChristtreatedthosewhoregardedthemselvesasHisenemies.Itisto meetthebarrageoflying, hatred,calumnyanddeceitwith afullandradiantChristiancharity.Actualpersecutionisfaced withmeekness;prideandstubbornnesswithgentleness;personalinjurywithforgiveness.It asksagreatdealofhuman nature,butitmustsucceedbecauseitsactualpractice(or itssincereandconstantattempting)placestheresponsibilityfor resultsdirectlyonOurLord.As oftenaswewinarguments,score victories,meetcalumnywith bitterness,orhatewithcleverness,wefailintheChristian testIfthishadbeenthehighroadtothewinningofsoulsOur Lordwouldhaveusedit.He didnot.HislifeandHisspirit arestillsignsofcontradictioneventothosewhoprofesstolove andfollowHim.Thatiswhy theprayerfulstudyofHislifeis integraltotheformationofCatholicActionists.Itwouldbe itselfsufficient,ifwecouldonly learnhowHis"failures"succeed eternally.

SUPPRESSIONFUTILE.

Ibelievethatanyattemptat suppressionisgrosslymistaken. Thedifficultyistoatthey'cannot bereasonedwith,atleastattheir publicmeetings.Butagreat dealmightbeaccomplishedby privatecontactandpersonalconversation.Itwouldbefollyto hedeterredfromsuchanattemptbecausetheymayturn outtobepeopleoflowintelligenceorindifferenteducation.An attitudesavouringofsnobbery, foundedinintellectualpride, wouldnotbeworthyoftheCatholicfaith.Christdiedforthe low-brown,too,andtheChurch hasbeenwellservedbytheintelectualpoorandlowly.

LESSDIGNITY?

Certainitisthatsomeeffort shouldbemadetobringthe warmthofcharityandthelight oftruthtosoulsfromwhomthey havebeentoolongshutoutFor strongreligiousconvictions,no matterhowwarped,aresomethingtorejoiceinatatimewhen apathyandindifferenceareeatingawaythesoulofthenation. IfCommunistsareblindlyand aguelystrivingforthebrotherhoodofman,thebigotsatleast haveafirmgripontheFatherhoodofGod.Perhapsalittle lessdignityontheCatholicside mightaddtothenumberofconversions.

ThemissionoftheCatholicPressisanexceedingly difficultonewhenconsideredinthelightofitsmaterialresources.Thecriticismisnotuncommonlyheardthatthe Churchisbehindthetimesinitspropagandacompared withCommunismandevenwiththelesserheresies.Itis L.criticismwhichfrequentlyreboundsonitsformulators. FortheCatholicPress,likeeverythingelseinthismaterialisticuniverse,canbenostrongerthanitsfinancialbackingwillpermitittobecome.Itmaybeclaimed,without unduepuffing,thattheCatholicPressisabletoprovideitselfwithliterarytalentinnosenseinferiortothatofthe secularpapers.Thetragedyofthematteristhatthe writingsofableandsinceremendoesnotreceivethediffu6ionabroadwhichtheymerit.TheCatholicjournalisthas nointeresttoservesavethatofthetruth.Hencehis workmaybeofabreadthandfreedomrarelyaccordedthe unfortunatehackwhohastoservetheinterestsofpoliticalorfinancialinstitutions.ButevenamongCatholics, theCatholicPressisnotsupportedinanythinglikesufficientweighttoenableittotakeitsplaceinthecommunity asanorganofopinionwhichdeservesthoughtfulconsideration.

PAR1S.-Thestrikeofmunicipalofficials,includingmayors andcouncilmen,inCatholicvillagesandtownsintheVendee region,inthewestofFrance,inprotestagainstmeasuresinfringinguponfreedomofeducatiion,hasnowspreadtoAnjou,a provinceofBrittany,andtoareasinthevicinityofPoitou. Municipalofficialsinvolved vereelectedwiththeunderstandingthattheywouldwork forpublicaidtoChristian schools.Actionofloyalprefects, however,inholdingaidtoChristianschoolsillegal,andtherecentvoteintheNationalCouncil andtheNationalAssemblytonationaliseChristianschoolsin coalminingareas,areimmediate causesofthisstrikeofmunicipalofficials.

Oneofthecuriousresultshas beenthatallmarriagessince thebeginningofthestrikehave beenreligious.Frenchlawrequiresacivilceremonypreceding thereligiousceremony,butthe closingofthemunicipalbuildingshasmadethisimpossible. Coupleswishingtomarryhave presentedthemselvesatthemunicipalbuildingoutofrespect forthelaw,butfindingthebuildingsclosedtheyhavegonetothe churchforthereligionsceremony.Mayorsandtheiraides havetakenthenamesofthe couplesatthechurchdoor,with aviewtoregularisingthelegal recordsafterthestrike. Normallythiswouldresultin prosecutionofthemayorsand priestsforviolationofthelaw, buttheGovernmenthassofar teenunwillingtotakeanyactionotherthanappointingtemporarymayorstoreopenthemunicipalbuildings.

Whilemostofthepublic schoolsintheseregionsarevirtuallyempty,parentspay3,500,000dollarsforsupportofthe publicschools,whoseteachersreceivetwicethesalaryofteachers inthereligiousschools,andare, inaddition,taxedforentertainmentsandfairstheyorganiseto supporttheirownschools,which thevastmajorityofthechildren attend.

Refusalofpriestsandparents' groupstopaythetaxleviedon entertainmentsinsupportofthe Christianschoolshasresultedin anumberofactionsinthecourts. Insomeinstancessmallfines havebeenimposed,andinothers thedefewdantshavebeenacquitted.

Thepresentstrikeofmayors andcouncilmenisacontinuation ofthestruggleofthepeoplein theseCatholicregionstosecure therightoffreedomofeducation,butitdoesnotappearthat thesituationcanbesatisfactorily settledsolongasthepresent Governmentremainsinpower. Theissuewillbeprominentin theOctoberelections,when membersoftheNationalCouncil willbeupforre-election.While itisbelievedthatmoderateswill win,theywillhavetofacethe oppositionoftheNationalAssemblyinthisconflflictoverthe rightoffreedomofeducation.

Everyprecautionisnowtaken toshieldtheoperator.Lead;s thebestprotectivesubstance,as itisoneoftheheaviestmetals, andthereforedifficultforthe raystopenetrate.Amixtureof leadandrubberhasbeeninvented,ofwhichgloves,apronsand facemasksaremanufactured Glasscontaining00o-fifthsofits weightofleadisused,too,for protectivescreens.

Nowamancantakeaphotographofthecastingwhichwill revealthesmallestflaw,andby doingthiswhenthecastingis initscrudestatealltheuseless labourandtimethatwouldhave beenspentinmachineryandperfectingafaultypieceofmetal maybesaved.

Agreatdealofwoodworkwas usedatfirstintheconstruction ofaeroplanes,andheretheXraysprovedofthegreatestvalue, savingthelivesofmanyapilot. riolesmadeinthewoodbyinvisiblewormsareeasilyrevealed, andtheX-raysthusaddedanew safetytoHight.Thesamehelp being,givento-dayintheexaminationofweldedparts.Two metalpartsweldedtogetherby intenseheatshouldfuseintoone pieceofmetal.TheX-raywill revealthelinedividingimperfectlyweldedparts.

6,500Parisianstudentshave justtakenpartintheannual pilgrimagefromParistoChartres,adistanceof90miles, whereMasswasofferedinthe famousCathedralofNotre Dame,oneofthegreatmediaevalmonumentsofEurope. Fourteenyearsagoagroupof 15Parisianstudentswhohad readofPeguy'spilgrimage,resolvedtofollowhisexample. ThecustomofmakingthepilgrimagejustbeforethefinalexaminationsattheUniversityof Parishasnowbecomefirmlyestablished.Lastyear5,000studentstookpart.

Amongthoseparticipatingthis yearwereProtestants,Jews, Moslems,andevenCommunists. Studentsfrom10nations,includingtheUnitedStates,EnglandandGermany,werepresent. Becauseofthegreatheattheactualpilgrimageonfootbegan about25milesfromChartres, althoughmanymadetheentire journeyonfoot.Firstaidunits wereformedbymedicalstudentsandnurses.Thepilgrims wereorganisedingroupsof70, eachgrouphavingitsownchaplaintoleadinprayerandthe singingofhymns.Intheeven ingthestudentsassembledto discussthemeaningoftheivIass OnPentecostSundayMasses werecelebratedinthefields.
