Atatimewhensectarians, thinlydisguisedasitinerantevangelists,areconductingcampaignsofhateandcalumny againsttheChurch,andespeciallyagainsttheNunsinthisState, itisappropriatethatanursing SisteroftheOrderofSt.Johnof Godshouldhavebeenhonoured byHisMajestytheKingwith theawardofMemberoftheOrderoftheBritishEmpire.The

recipientofthishonourisMother MaryGertrude,Provincialofthe North-West.ProvinceoftheOrderofSt.JohnofGod,whohas beenforsomeyearsinchargeof theLeprosariumatDerby. BorninCountyClare,Ireland, MotherGertrudecametothis Stateasayoungpostulantover 40yearsago.MostofhernursingcareerwasspentattheSu. biacoHospitaluptill1930,when

shevolunteeredforworkamong thenativesintheNorth-West. Forthenexteightyearsshe engagedinthecareofaboriginal childreninorphanagesconductedbytheSistersofSt.Johnof GodatBroomeandattheBeagleBayMission,conductedby theSocietyoftheCatholicApos tolate.In1938,however,Mother Gertrudevolunteeredtoundertakethenursingofthelepersat

AtpresentvisitingPerthas theguestoftheArchbishopis MostRev.Dr.T.Wade,S.M., VicarApostolicoftheNorthern SolomonIslands.Dr.Wade cametoAustraliaforabriefrest andtotakepartinthecelebrationsinconnectionwiththeMelbourneDiocesanCentenary.

Dr.WadewasborninRhode Island,U.S.A.,andaftercompletinghisstudiesattheCatholic Universitywasordainedasa memberoftheSocietyofMary in1922.HesetsailinJanuary, 1923,fortheSolomons,andhas labouredthereeversince.The missionsintheNorthSolomons beganin1898,andhereached itataparticularlydifficultstage. Thankstohisefforts,and,or course,theeffortsofthebrothers andnuns,therearenowtwentythreemissionstationsinthe icariate,andthenativepopulationisnow85percent.Catholic.

Dr.WadewasconsecratedBishopbyHisExcellencyDr.Cattaneo,theApostolicDelegate, ontheFeastoChristtheKing, October26,1930.,TheconsecrationtookplaceinSt.Patrick's Church,ChurchHill,Sydney.

In1935hepaidhis"adlinvina" visittoRome,andreturnedto theSolomonsviatheUnited States.

Avastamountofworkisbeing catechistsor"teachers,"astheyarecalled.These arenativeswhoaretrainedarp.i thensentoutthroughthevan ousvillages.Accommodation iserectedforthembythehead ofthevillage,andlandisgiven themtoraisetheirownfood. These"teachers"arenotpaid, butthreetimesayeartheyreceiveagiftfromtheBishop. Thisgiftdoesnotamountto much,asthe"teachers"realise thattheyareworkingforGod, andconsiderthemselvesasmembersoftheChurchMilitant. Theirreakardwillbeinthelife tocome.

Thewar,ofcourse,causeda terrificupheavalthroughthe mission,lands.Everyoneofthe twenty-twomissionstationswas destroyed.

FourofthepriestswerebeheadedbytheJapanese.Two nunsdiedofwoundsandstarvation,andsixReligiousBrothers perished;fourwerekilledbythe Japsandtwodiedofwounikand privation.Thenatives'.also suffered.Thousandsdiedfrom ourownbombing,anddisease spreadbytheJapaneseaccountedforthousandsmore.

Attheageof80years,Most 11ev.Dr.JohnHeavey,O.S.A., BishopofCairns,Queensland, passedtohiseternalrewardon the12th.inst.Thethirdeccu. pantoftheSee,whichwasestablishedin1941,thelateDr. HeaveywasanativeofCounty Wicklow,Ireland,wherehewas bornin1868.AttheageofseventeenheenteredtheOrderof theHermitsofSt.Augustine, andwasordainedinRomein 1891.Hesubsequentlybecame PrioroftheAugustinianAbbey atNewRoss,CountyWexford, andinthisofficehewasappointedVicarApostolicofCooktown, andconsecratedabishopinAugust,1914.Allthepriestsofthe DioceseofCairnsbelongtothe AustralianVice-Provinceofthe

Augustinians.Upto1941the diocesehadbeentheVicariate ApostolicofCooktown.

DuringBishopHeavey'sepiscopate,thediocesemadesteady progress.TheCatholicpopulationof14,000iswellservedwith 34churchesinnineparishes. Twothousandchildrenattend theparochialschoolsandcollees.Thereare18Religious priests,10brothers,and92nuns, whiletheCatholicsocietiesare inaflourishingcondition.

SolemnRequiemMassforthe lateBishopWillbecelebratedat CairnsonTuesday,22nd.inst. HisGrace,ArchbishopDuhig,of Brisbane,willpreachthepanegyric.

hereasinmanyotherparts wheretownshipsarelargeand moneyplentiful.TheNorth Solomonsiscutofffromtherest oftheworld,andtheonlyEuropeansthenativescameincontactwithwerethemissionaries andanoccasionaltrader.

ThesplendidexampleandpracticalCatholicityofourAustralianandAmericanservicemen didagreatdealtofurtherthe causeofChristthroughthese areas.

Dr.WadestayedoninBougainvillewhenthecivilauthorities fledattheapproachoftheJaps.

HehimselfWastakenprisoner bythem,andforoveramonth wasingaol.Suddenlyone morningtheyfledtotheirboats andleftthetown.Hedoesn't knowwhytheyactedthus,but thinkstheymusthavereceived falseinformationaboutanin. vasionbyourtroops.

Dr.Wadeisamostpractical man.Childwelfareclinicshave beenestablishedinanendeavour tolessenthehighinfantmortalityrates.Orphanages,schools, andtechnicalcollegeshavebeen opened,andthereisevenaSeminarycateringfornativeboys desirousofstudyingforthe Priesthood.Heiscontentwith thesimplestofbuildings."We don'twantgreatbuildings,"he stated;"butwewantmanysmail ones."HisownCathedralwas athatchedgrassshed.Allthe missionbuildingsweredestroyed, andhis"Palace"isnowinanexArmyhospital.Thisblockof buildingsalsohouseshisconvent,seminaryandschool.

Therearenowtwenty-sixnuns workingintheVicariate;twenty. eightpriests(RegularandDiocesan)arekeptbusy.Amongst thesecularpriestswhovolunteeredforthismissionisRt. Rev.Mons.Hannon(formerly NationalDirectorofthePropalionoftheFaith),andRev. FatherFingleton(brotherof cricketstar,JackFingleton).

Alotofthevisitationofthe Vicariatehastobedoneby boat,andherehehastheservice ofagroupofAustralianCatholiclaymenwhohaveformed themselvesintowhattheycall "TheGuildofSt.Joseph,"and whoperforminvaluableworkon themission.Dr.ChrisBurke andhiswife,whoisalsoadoctor,arethere.Dr.Burke,a f,rmerresidentofNedlands,left hispositionattheRoyalPerth Hospitalsomemonthsagoto volunteerformissionaryworkin theIslands.

Dr.WadewillbeinPerthfor afewmoredays,andwillthen returntotheSolomons,viathe EasternStates.

Thisworkwasinauguratedin 1907,whenMotherAntonia O'Brienledhervolunteerstothe BeagleBayMission,wherethey openedaschooltotrainyoung girlsfordomesticwork.Thence toBroome,wheretheytookover aspecialhospitalwhichwas maintainedbytheJapanesefor theirownnationals.Duringthe smallpoxoutbreakof1912,oneof theSistersdiedwhileministeringtothesick.ACelticCross intheBroomeCemeterywas erectedinherhonourbyher gratefulJapanesepatients.

IntheGovernmentHospitalat BroometheSistersgavetheir services,andalthoughofficially nurses,muchofthemenialwork wasdonebythemwhenhelpwas unavailable.Heretheymade contactwithChinese,Malays, Filipinos,andallclassesand creedsinthiscentreofthepearlingindustry.

In1937,attherequestofthe Government,theSisterstook overthelepersettlementat Derby,whereto-daytheyhave over100blackpatientsintheir care.Heretheyhaveawellequippedhospital,theGovernmentsuppliesfoodandpayssalaries,whiletwolaysuperintendentsandtheirfamiliesarrange transportandsuppliesandkeep thepeaceamongthenatives.

Contrarytopopularbelief,the majorityofthepatientsarenot hospitalcases.Manyareable todolightworkinthekitchen garden,gatheringfirewoodand

AlthoughtheLeprosariumis' situatedeightmilesbeyondthe town,thescareoftheJapanese raidsduringthewardisorganisedtheworkforashortperiod. Actingunderinstructions,the NunslefttheLeprosarium,but returnedafterabriefabsence. Theystayedwiththeirafflicted chargesthroughthetroublesome period,andononeoccasionhad totaketothebushwiththeir patientsandstayoutforaweek.

NoSisterhasevercontracted leprosy-ablessingwhichthe Nunsattributetothecareof DivineProvidence.Theyare veryhappyintheirwork,andalwayswishtoreturntoDerby. Thenatives,too,settledownremarkablywell.TheyaregenuinelygratefultotheSisters,and willoftenfighttodojobsfor them.Inadditiontogoodfood, nursingandmedicalcare,they areprovidedwitheveryamenity. Theyhavetheir"movies"regu- larly,athleticsports,andare particularlyfondof.theirorchestra.Ifthediseaseistakenearly thereiseveryprospectofacure, andaconsiderablenumberofnativeshavereturnedtotheirstationsortribesingoodhealth. TheNunsmakelightofconditionswhichcivilianswouldfmd heart-breaking.Thenatureof thediseasetheynurse,thetryingclimate,andtheisolationof theplace-allaresustainedwith acheerfulnessandreadyservice whichisaglowingexampleof Christiancharityandreply enoughtothosewhowouldtraducetheworkandthespiritof theseheroicspousesofChrist.

InformationwasreceivedthisweekfromtheMalteseHigh Commissionerthatnegotiationshavenowbeencompletedbetween theCommonwealthandMalteseGovernmentswithregardtoa mipraltionagreement.Individualandgroupnominationsof Maltesecannowhemadeunderanassistedpassagescheme.This AssociationisanxioustohearfromanyoneinterestedinnominatingMaltesepersonnel.Thereare25,900Maltesepeopleofgood standingandvariousoccupationsawaitingnomination.

TheCatholicMigrationOffice inEnglandhas1,200namesalsa awaitingnominators,andweare advisedelevenshipsarescheduledtotakemigrantstoAustralia thisyear.Nominationslodged nowwouldhaveeverychanceof gettingpassagesthisyear. ThisAssociationwouldalsobe pleasedtohandleanynominationsforrelativesandfriendsof peopleresidihginW.A.'

Theplayitselfmiaswrittenby NormanMacowan,andwaslisted highamongthefamousplaysof 1938.ThestoryisaboutLeda Veerkind(JoseBrennan),amedicalstudentattheUniversityof Litzia(capitalofthetotalitarian StateofZagnira).WhilstattendingalectureintheUniversity, shereceivesavisionfromGod thatsheistopreachHisname tothepeoplewhohaveforthe lastsevenyearsbeenforcedto abandontheChristianreligion andtosubmittothepaganmaterialismofthenewState.

Thelengthyperiodsofwaiting betweenscenesbrokewhatever threadofsuspensewascreated.

Irealisefullythefactthatperhapsthehallitselfdidnotlend itselftoefficientstagemanagement,butafterall,wastheresu muchpropertytobemovedthat afulltwentyminuteswassometimesneededtoaccomplishthis? Themusicalinterludesbetween thescenescertainlydidnothing tofosterthisatmosphereoftension.

Voiceproductionwas,onthe whole,verygood;Imighteven say,inthemajorityofcases,excellent.

ActinghonourswienttoJose Brennan(Leda)andKevinGallagher(Rutzstein).

JoseBrennangaveanexcellentinterpretationofthevisionary.Herweaknesswasher strength,andinhercalmway managedtoportraythesoulofa girlhumbleyetproud,weakyet strong,visionaryyetpractical, whoknewfullwellthatthe preachingoftheexistenceofGod meanteventuallyherdeath.Miss Brennanwas,byfar,the"star' oftheevening.

KevinGallagher,asthehead oftheBurglitzCouncil,acted withapurposeandsincerityseldomseeninsoyoungaplayer. Hisinterpretationofadifficult rolewasoutstanding.

Itwouldbefutiletogothrough theentirecast.Spacewouldnot Hermitit,butitisashamethat thegoodactingonthepart ofKevinHynes,FrankPowell andHughWebbshouldhave been,tosomeextentnullifiedby insufficientsupportfromother membersofthecast.

Theplaywasasuccess,though notagreatsuccess,andthesympatheticaudiencediditsbestto

showitsappreciation(though whytheyshouldbesoamusedat thefinalsceneisbeyondme). TheTherrySocietyistobe congratulatedonitsefforts,and wehopetoseemorepolisheand betterreceivedproductionsinthe future.Mayitssloganbetn.! finalwordsoftheplay:"Thisis nottheend.It'sonlythebeginning." -MEDICUS.

Animportantlandmmarkinthehistoryoftheefforts oftheCatholicChurchinthisStatetotamelioratethelotof theaborigineswasmarkedonthe17th.ult.,whenanew CatholicHall,fortheuseofthecolouredpeopleofPort Hedlandtownanddistrict,wasopenedbythePremier. Mr.R.McLarty.Theprovisionofthesefacilitieswas plannedandcarriedthroughbytheparishpriest,Father T.Bryan,withthefinancialsupportofBishopGummer,of Geraldton.

Inthepresenceofaverylarge gatheringofbothwhiteandco:ouredpeople,thePremierofficiallydeclaredtheEuralianHaI open,andinatrulyremarkable addressstressedtheneedfor Christianityinthedailylivesof thepeople,ifAustraliawasto survive.Hestressedthefact thatwecannotstandstill,but mustadvance;andouradvancementmustbealongChristian lines,becauseChristianprin. ciplesaretheonlysoundones. Henceeveryoneshouldstand rightbehindtheirChurchleaders, supportingthemintheirevery endeavourandencouragingthem toevengreaterefforts.

ThePremierthencomplimentedthecolouredpeopleon theirmagnificentbuildingand expressedthehopethatthey wouldalwaysuseittothebest advantage.Afterwelcoming Mr.McLartyandhisparty(Mr.

Reid,under-treasurer;Mr.Dumas,DirectorofPublicWorks; Mr.Young,CommissionerofMain Roads;Mr.Doig,Premier'ssecretary,andMr.Olney,official correspondent),Rev.Father Bryan,ParishPriest,calledon MissRoseClarke,whorepresentedthecolouredpeople,toout linetheaimsofthehall.With apoiseandpersonalitywhich greatlyimpressedall,particularlythePremier'sparty,Miss Clarkefirstofallthankedthe Bishop,MostRev.Dr.Gummer, forguaranteeingtheoverdraft andencouragingtheventurein everyway.Shethenwentonto explainthatuptothepresent thecolouredpeoplehadnoplace tomeetforsocialorrecreational purposes.Inthehall,however, thiswasremedied.Itwasa hallthattheycouldbeproudDi asabuilding,butitalsostood forsomethingmuchhigher:It gavethemanindividuality.With itsbillardtable,ping-pongtable, dartboardandpiano,children hadafocalpointforamusements.Thehallstoodforprogressandwasbuiltmainlyfor thechildren,whomeritedevery considerationasAustralians,and giventheencouragementandopportunitywouldproveasgoon Australiansasanyotherchit dren.

TherecommendationoftheFederalCabinettoliftthe rationingofclothingandmeatisclaimedbyasectionof thePresstopresageawholesaleabandonmentofwartimecontrols.Certainlyitisawholesomesignthatthe popularrejectionofthereferendumtoenabletoCommonwealthpermanentlytocontrolpricesandrentsshouldhave beenfoilwedsopromptlybyactiontomodifytheregimentationoflife.Atthesametimeitwouldbeunworthy ofdecentpoliticaltraditionsifthewithdrawalofsubsidies weremadesosuddenlyastoappearaskaretaliatorymeasureandtocauseembarrassmenttotheStates.Itistobe doubtedwhetherthesystemofsubsidisingindustriesisin thelongrunsoundstatecraft,foritisbuttorobPeterto payPaul.Butcertainlythestrainonthenationaleconomycausedbythewarhadtohemetinsomeway,andit wasmadelessonerousbythereflectionthatthetaxpayers' moneywentchieflytotheaidofprimaryproducers.While therelaxationorabolitionofwar-timecontrolsisvery welcome,bothasarestorationofpersonalfreedomandas anindicationthatoureconomiclifeisreturningtonormal, itwouldbetragicifthefuturewerelefttoanidiotic laissez-fairepolicysuchasexistedinthepre-atomicage.

11theworldto-daylacksvirtue,itisbecausevirtue standsinthemiddlepathandourcivilisationisproductive ofextremistminoritiesandofapatheticmajorities.in thenotfardistantdayswhencapitalismwasinthesaddle, itwasfairlygenerallyacceptedthatitwasperfectlynormalforthefewtoowneverything.Intheselattertimes itislargelyaccepted,butnotwiththesamecomplacency, thatnobodyshouldownanything.Theseareminority views,andthepeoplearesilent.ButtheCatholicChurch willnotyieldaninchtoeithercamp,forbothareinerror. Itismonstrousandunjusttoconcentrateallproductive, andhencepolitical,powerinthehandsofafewcapitalists, justasmuchasitistogivetheregulationofthewholeof lifetoafewpoliticians.Thereisacryingneedforpopulareducationintheobviousmiddlecoursewhereeverybody wouldownalittle-"amodestcompetence."Becausethe multitudehasbeenindoctrinatedintothefatalisticchoice betweentheextremes,ithasneveradvertedtothesane andhumanviewoflifeofferedbythethirdcourse-the widespreaddistributionofproductive,privateownership. Andthereisnopoliticalreflectionofthiscommonsenseadvocacy.

Thepoliticaloppositiontothe measure(or,atleast,whatthe Pressletsusknowofsuchactivity)hasbeenextremelylimited andpuny.Thedoctorsarefightingthemeasureprimarily,it wouldseem,forthepreservation oftheirprofessionalstatus.They donotobjecttotheprincipleof thescheme;theymerelywishto havethePharmacopoeiaChifleianawidenedtoincludewhatever drugsadoctorwouldordinarily prescribe.Asforthepeople- thepeoplearedumbevenbefore thegallonsof"free"lollywater lodgeintheirgullets.Thereis awallofmentalatrophysymbolisedbytheirmonumentalMarticulation.ButIhaveanuneasinessthatfartoomanypeople arequitecontenttoremainpassiveandhavethingsdoneto them,providedtheyarenot sharplyunpleasant.

FUNCTIONOFSOCIALLIFE.

Whatisbeingprogressivelylost sightofistheclear,limitedconceptionofwhattheSocialContractoriginallyinvolved.When menfirstcametogetherinorganisedsocieties,withwhatobjectdidtheydoso?Itwasto "perfect"theirownlives.Neither theindividualnorthefamilyunit containedwithinitselfthepower orthepotentialitytocompassits fulldevelopment.Mencametogetherintocommunitiesforthe achieverlientofendswhichwere possibleonlytoaco-operative group.ThisarrangementinvolvedthesacrificeUytheindividualswhocompriseditofcertainpersonalliberties.Thecreationandfunctioningofajuridical system,forexample,postulated theputtingasideofthevendetta andthepersonalfeud,andeven themodificationoftherightof self-defence.Thepowerandimpartialityofthel.awintheadministrationofjusticewould standbetweenthepassionsofthe offendersandtheoffended.

Itwas,andis,implicitinthe SocialContractthattheindivi-

dualyieldedonlysomuchofhis personallibertyaswasessential totheperfectionofsociety. Moreover,theindividual'srenunciationwasafreeact,motivated bythemoralsuasionofhisown highergoodanddevelopment. TheindividualprecededtheState ineveryrespect,andthevalidity ofitsmoralauthoritywasderivenfromtheNaturalLawthrough theassentoftheindividualswho composedit.

AUTHORITYANDTYRANNY.

Thisprimitive,conditionalconsentmarksoff,evento-day,the properandlegitimateexerciseof publicauthorityfromtyranny andusurpation.Henceitremainsareversaloftrueorderfor theStatetoarrogatetoitself rightsandfunctionswhichthe individualcan(orwishestoattemptto)exerciseeitherpersonallyorthroughalowerand lesscomplexorganisationthan theState.Thereare,ofcourse, caseswheretheindividual,by neglectorcrime,virtuallycedes hisrights,andtheStateisobligedtointerveneforthecommongood.Butthesecasesare exceptional,andhardcasesmake

Yetmoderngovernmentsare, almostuniversally,makingabid forsuchaspateofpowerthat inferentiallytheircitizensmust regardedascasesofretarded n.entaldevelopmentordangerous criminallunatics.Forthatpower ofpublicinterventioninthepersonallivesofthecitizenswhich wasconcededasalastresortof thepublicinterest,tendstobecomethenormalprocedurein publiclife.Yetitisanunnati.ralconceptionofpoliticalpower, endassuch,immoralandtolw resistedwithgreatvigourand constancy.

PERSONALANDCO-OPERATIVEEFFORT.

L1EGEMENOFTHESTATE.

TheperilofthisprocessofdehumanisingthecitizenSofAustraliatothedeadlevelofnliegerne oftheStateisthatitwillcome topassthattheindividual's worthwillsoonbeassessedonhis abilityto''co-operate"withthe Government.Inthisparticular instancehewillhavetoswallow theGovernmentpillswithasmile. Quitefrankly,Iregardthewhole businessasservile. Idon't wanttobeagoodboyaccording totheGovernmentprescription. Itisexceedinglypainfultothink thatatthislatehourinthe world'shistory,peoplewillqueue upforthemedicinedolemuchas theRomansdidintheheydayof

theirslavesystemforfreebread andcircuses. IfthereissomuchMoneyin theFederalcoffersthattheGovernmentcanembarkonahundred andoneschemesof"socialservice,"itshouldbepracticableto remitsomethingoftheoppressicburdenofdirecttaxation,and theevenmoreextortionateload ofindirecttaxes.Ifthiswere dinethewage-earnrmightfind hehadenoughofhisweek'sremunerationlefttoprovidefor hismedicalneedsasafreeman, andnotbeprovidedforinaseriilemannerbyapackofSocialpopinjays.

"FREE"MEDICINEMYTH.

Itmayberemarkedinparenthesisthatthemedicinescheme is,ofcourse,not"free"inany sense.Theworkerhaspaidand willkeeponpayingforitand otherthingsheraldedbythit arch-bureaucrat,theSocialist managerofBritain,LordBeveridge.Inasmuchasthemajorityofhealthyworkerswillpay fortheminorityofhissickcomrades,theschemewillactasa substituteforsocialcharity.In asmuchastheworkerswillsupportanever-growingarmyof malingerersandhypochondriacs, theywillfindtheschemeanythingbutfree.Theordinary simpleremediesthatcouldbe hadfortwoorthreeshillings willnowneedthedoctor'sprescription,and,ofcourse,hisfee. Sothattheevery-daymedicamentsarelikelytobecomefour orfivetimesdearer.Butthatis thekindofblessingonemustexceptinaSocialisteconomy.

ScandalofaRoyalApostasy

WiththemarriageofPrincess

Anne,ofBourbon-ParmatoexKingMichaelofRumania,accordingtotheritesoftheGreek OrthodoxChurch,anotherpublic apostasyhastakenplace.The losstotheChurchthroughattemptedmarriagesoutsidethe Foldisheavyenough;whenone ofthepartiesconcernedisapublicfigureofsomeimportance,the evilisaggravatedbywidespread scandal.Eventhoughroyalty isto-dayinthediscard,andthe marriageofsovereignsisnot likelyprofoundlytoaffectthereligiousbeliefsoftheirsubjects, thescandalremainsbecausethose oflittleornofaitharehappyin construingsuchincidentsasevidenceofaworld-widereligious collapse.Moreover,pusillanimousreligioussouls,spirituallyenervatedbythemodernnotionsof romanticlove,areonlytooreisay tofindjustificationfortheir ownconductinthewrong-domg ofcrownedheads.

CHURCH'SCONSISTENCY.

Ifthereisasoulofgoodnessin unhappythingsofthiskind,it mayconsistinthevividwitne,s theybeartotheconsistencyof theCatholicChurchintheapplicationsofHerteachings.Itis commonlychargedagainsttne Churchbyherprofessionalenemiesandbytheuninformed,that theVaticanispreparedtowaive, oranyhowtomodify,Herdsctrineinfavourofthewealthy

andpowerful.Theexistencaof Protestantism,atleastinitsEnglishforms,shouldhavebeensatficienttonailthatcalumnyatits inception.ForthePopewaswillingtolosetheEnglishnation latherthantowhittledownthe aoctrineofmonogamousmarriagetosuitthepassionsor HenryVIII.

EXCOMMUNICATIONAND RE-ENTRY.

Buterrordieshard,especially ahenitisaimedagainstthe ChurchofGod.Theoldliesare resurrected,rehashedandserved upagaininsucceedinggenerations. disinteringSectariansareconstantly thedecomposedremainsoftheMarconiandMarlboroughcaseswithoutintheleast understandingtheissuesthat werethereatstake.Thepresentcase,however,admitsofno quibbling.Thequestionasked ofthePopewaswhetherhewould dispensethePrincessAnnefrom theobligationsoftheNeTemere decree.Hisanswerwasanunequivocalnegative,andthePrincesswentthroughtheform'of marriageoutsidetheChurch. Hence,despitePressreportsof herdeterminationnottorenounceherFaith,shehasdeliberatelycutherselfofffromthe Church.Shemayreturnonconditionofregularisinghermarriageandrepentinghersininthe samewayasthelowliestcharwoman.

NOBIDFORCHARITY.

Whatneedscorrectionabout thecabledreportistheuseofthe word"subsidies."Itisonethat iscommonlyinvokedinthisvexe.l issue,sometimesbywayofcloud- ingtherealfacts,butmoreoften outofignoranceandaloosemannerofspeech.Theclaimofthe religiousschoolsalloverthe worldforthesupportofthat shareofthetaxeswhichtheir supporterscontributeisinnoway ademandforasubsidy.They asknotforsocialcharitybutfor socialjustice.

OBJECTIONSINCONSCIENCE

Allcitizenscontributeinsome measuretothepublicrevenues fromwhichtheeducationalsystemisfinanced.Yettheeducationalgrantislimitedtothesup- portofStateschoolswhichpro- vide"free,"secularandcompulsoryeducation.Yetin,every communitythereisaconsiderbleminoritywhobelievethatreligionmustbetheintegrating factorineducation,asitisinlife, andwho,therefore,cannotinconsciencesendtheirchildrento schoolswhichignoretheirbasic firstprinciples.Theseconscientiouspeoplearehenceconstrainedtomaintaintheirown schools,wheretheirchildrenmay heeducatedintheknowledge andloveofGod,aswellasinthe profaneartsandsciencesandin purelyutilitariansubjects.

SUBSIDISINGSECULARISM.

Forthesakeofconscience manythousandsofpeopleare wiltingtomakethissacrifice,anditsimplementationrepresentsa sealhardshipwhichincreases withtheadvanceofeducational methods.Whattheydoresent isthattheyare,atthesame time,compelledtosupportfinanciallytheStateschoolswhich theycannotuse.Anditiscertainlyunjusttocompelreligious taxpayerstosubsidiseasecular systemofeducation.Itisassuredlygallingforpeoplewho havetopaytwiceforeducation, toseetheirshareoftaxation whichisearmarkedforeducationemployedintheinstruction ofotherpeople'schildren.

Theclaimofthesupportersof theChurchschoolsisclearand irresistible.Theymerelywant theirshareoftheeducational grantwhichtheyhavepaidin taxationtobedevotedtothose schoolstowhichtheymayconscientiouslysendtheirchildren. Thatisaveryfarcryfroman appealforcharitybywayofa subsidy.Norisitmerelyamatterofjusticetoaminority.Itis amatterofexpediencyforthe nationalwelfare,astheFrench nationisdiscovering.

WhathadbroughtFranceto thisheavydoom?Itistemptingtosimplifythefactorsin whatisnecessarilyamostcorn-

Themorningsessionwasopen edbythePresident(Mrs.Maxwell),whowielcomedallpresent andgaveashortaccountofthe foundingof the Catholic Women'sLeagueinEngland, 1908,bythenotedconvert,Mary Fletcher.

TheChaplain,Rev.Father Langmead,gaveagreetingtoall presentandintroducedRev. FatherStinson,whospoke,onthe subjectofimmigration,andaskedfortheassistanceoftheLeague,whichwasreadilypromised.

Thereportsofthebranches werethenreadandresolutions broughtforwardanddiscussed.

AnaddressofabsorbinginterestwasthengivenbyRev.

FatherLangmead.Itwasan accountoftheearlydaysofhis priesthoodontheGoldfieldsand inthecountry,andofthevast distanceshehadtotravelbetweenhisparishes.Hewaseternallyindebted,andsoweremany

goodCatholicsto-day,tothe wonderfulwomenoftheoutback,whogavereligiousinstructionregularlyandkeptthe FaithandtheloveofGodalive inthemostdistantplaces.

ApaperwasthenreadbyMrs. Clementson''AVisittotheBait Migrants,"whichwasbothinstructiveandentertaining.

Intheafternoon,RightBev. MonsignorMcMahonpresided,in theabsenceofHisGraceArchbishopPrendiville.Theannual reportandthefinancialreport werethenread,showinggood progressfortheyear.

MonsignorMcMahon,aftercongratulatingthePresidentonthe year'swairk,gaveamosteloquentaddress.

Takingforhissubject,"Judith oftheOldTestament,"the speakershowedhowinthese moderndaysbraveandvaliant womenareneededjustasmuch astheywereinthetimeofJudith.Heurgedhislistenerstobe readyandpreparedforanywork thatmaybesetforthemasJudithfulfilledhertaskinthedays ofold.

Adelightfulafternoonteawas servedbythemembersofthe NedlandsBranch,andwasmuch appreciatedbyallpresent.

'Whatisour'crime'?Wehave beenanti-Communistsandwe stillare.Wecannotandwe willnotchangeourattitudein thismatter.Wefoughtagainst Titobecausewebelievedthatwe werefightingforajustcause. Wehaveneverbeenanti-British. Wehavebeenanti-Russian.That isthetruth.Putusbeforean impartialinternationalcourt,but letusnotbehandedovertothe CommunistPeople'sCourtin Tito'sYugoslavia.TheCommunistPeople'sCourtscannotbe impartial.Myfriends,wehave nottimetotellyoumore."

Thisispartofaletterwhich hasreachedIrelandfromaCroatianintheBritishinternment campatEasterwegan.

Thecaseofthe50CroatianintellectualsnowinternedinEsterwegenbytheBritishispurelya politicalone.Politicaltrials havebeengoingoninYugoslavia eversincethewar.

TheexecutionofMr.Petkov, leaderoftheBulgarianPeasant Party,wasdescribedinaBritish diplomaticnoteas"judicialmurder."ButinCommunist-dominatedYugoslaviapoliticaloppositionitselfhasbecomeacrime. Wehaveseenthisfromthetrial ofArchbishopStepinac. NoFairThal.

InYugoslaviato-daythepublicprosecutorsarethemenwho werepoliticalcommissarstothe partisanbrigadesduringthe war.Itcanhappenthatthe

publicprosecutorinthetrialof these50Croatianintellectuals whoareabouttobehandedover toTito,willbeapoliticalofficer fromthepartisanarmyagainst v,hichtheCroatsfought.Itis hardtobelievethattheCroatian Catholicintellectualswillhavea fairtrial.

TheCommunistsfromYugoslavia,Bulgaria,andothercountriesridalltheterritorythey ruleoftheanti-Communistand "reactionary"element.Thewhole anti-Communistpopulationtrom South-EastEurope-inthemajorityCatholic-hasbeencondemnedtodeath,andthisdecree isbeingputintoexecutionenergeticallyineverycornerof South-EasternEurope.

The"People'sCourts"areworkingeverywhereatfullpressure. TheannihilationoftheCroatian CatholicnationwillthenbeInevivable. Ineverypartof YugoslaviatheCatholicpopulationisinamoreorlessserious plight,insuspensebetweenlife anddeath.

375PriestsKilled.

In1945,accountsofmassaces ofCatholicpriestsfromYugoslaviabegantoreachAustralia Theseaccountsincreasedin numberandfullnessofdetail.In thebeginningof1948itbecame possibletoobtainafairlyaccurateknowledgeofwhathadhappened.Thefactisthatinfour years375Catholicspriestshave beenkilledinYugoslavia.About 420arelivinginexile,and180 areimprisoned.

Inafewweeksafterthe50 CroatiansintellectualsarehandedovertoTitothenumberof executedCatholicpriestsand otherintellectualswillbeincreased.

TheCatholicpeopleinYugoslaviaandotherSouth-Eastern Europecountrieswillgetanew impressionoftheChristianWesternEuropeanUnion,whichis abouttobebuiltUptothisthe onlyhopeoftheCatholicpopulationfromSouth-EasternEuropewasWesternChristianEurope.Itishardtobelievethat theCatholicpeoplefromthese regions,afterthesenewexecutions,withthehelpoftheBritishauthorities,willeveragain looktoWestEuropeasitsspiritualideal.

Inpresentingthetenthannual reportoftheCatholicWomen's League.thePresidentandExecutiveCouncildesiretoexpress theirthankstoHisGrace,ArchbishopPrendivilleforhiskindly interestandgenerousassitance, andtotheirchaplain,Rev. FatherLangmead,forhisspiritualguidanceandunfailingherp. Wethankourmembersfortheir willingasistanceandco-operation inallworksundertakenbythe League,alsootherfriendswho havekindlyhelpedtheLeague.

TheannualgeneralCommunion oftheLeaguetookplaceonSunday,May23,eveoftheFeastof OurLadyHelpofChristians. Eachbranchattendedinitsown parish.TwoMasseswereoffer adonthedeathofmanymemberduringtheyear.

Thesumof£60wasraisedby allbranchesforabursaryforSt. CharlesSeminary.Mrs.Goody alsoassistedbyorganisingacard partyforthisobject.

TwodelegatesfromtheLeague attendedtheInterstateandFederalConferenceheld-inSydneyin October,1947.

TheLeagueisrepresentedon thefollowingpubliccommittees, andtheirmeetingsareattended regularlyviz.:NationalCouncil ofWomen(Mrs.Maxwellison theExecutiveofthisCouncil, andMrs.McCannassistswiththi, afternoonteas) AlexanIra Home;UnitedNationsOrganisation;Travellers'Aid;Australian ChinaAssociation;Wandering Mission;acommittehelpswith theRedCrossafternoonteasat thePerthHospital.(ThiscommitteehasbeencarryingonunderMrs.Jenkinseversincethe foundingoftheLeague).

Anothercommitteehelpsinthe streetcollectionsforvarious charitableobjects.Castledare andClontarfOrphanagesareassistedontheirFieldDays,and ourcommitteesservetheafternoonteasontheseoccasions.ContributionshavebeensenttoTardun.AsaleofWorkwasheld inDecembertoaugmentLeague fundsandthiswasverysuccessful.

ThemonthlymeetingsatNestleHousearewellattended,and eachbranchactsinturnashostesses.Everythirdmonthan eveningmeetingisheldforthe benefitofmemberswhocannot attendintheafternoon.

TheEntertainmentCommittee organisedseveralpleasanteveningsandthebridgepartiesare alwaysenjoyable.

Membersvisitthehospitals, theHomeofPeace,Glendalough, theM.C.L.ConvalescentHome, WoorolooSanatorium,andthe HomesfortheBlind.AcommitteeasiststheTravellersAid Societybytakingturnsattheir rooms.

WearestillassistingthedistressedpeopleofEurope,especialytherelativesofourmissionariesintheNorth-West.This yearabout62parcelsoffood andclothingweresent,andmost gratefullettershavecometo handfromtherecipients.

Afascinatingstoryofburied treasurelingersaboutCreatononthe oldroadbetweenPinjarraandMandurah.Originally,aspartofthe PeelEstate,itwasownedbyaCaptainSingleton,whowasreputedto possessextensivesilverplate.One dayhishousewasfoundburntto theground,hisNegroservantand thesilvergone.nevertobeseen again.Asthesilverplatewastoo heavytobecarriedbytwomen.it isthoughtthatitmaystilllieburied somewhereinthevicinity.However. Onebrightandsparklingday lastOctoberahorsedrawncarriagewasmakingitssereneway alongaRuthenianroadnotfar fromthetownofUzhorod.Insidethecrowdedlittlecoachwere twoblack-frockedpriests,two seminaristsandafull-bearded butyouthfulclericofdistinguishedmienwearingtheepiscopal robesoftheGreekCatholic Church.

ASoviettankroundedabend inthehighwayseveralhundred yardsaheadandclankednoisily down.Thecoachmanpulledup hishorseatthesideoftheroad. Thetravellerswaitedimpassively.Thetankroaredintohigh speed.Suddenly,justbeforeit wasabouttopass,itveeredcrazily-andsmashedhead-oninto thecarriage.

THEMURDER.

TwoRedArmytankmen scrambledfromthecockpit.They ranforward.Allbutthebishop-thepriests,thestudents, andthecoachman-werealready dead.Thesoldiersfelltokickingandtramplingthemanin episcopalgarb.Finally,tomake certain,theypumpedtwobullets intotheheadofeachofthefallen,thenremountedtheirtank andclatteredaway.

Peasantsbroughttothescene bythesoundsofthecollision andtherevolver-firestoodhorrifiedatthecarnage.Someone telephonedthepolice.Staviet gendarmesarrivedandmadea quickinspection."Itwasan accident,"theytoldthecrowd. Abystanderremarkedthathe hadheardshooting.Thegendarmesarrestedhimonthespot forspreadingrumours."But1 sawtheRussiansfire,"protested anotherpeasant.Hewasarrestedalso-forslanderingthe RedArmy.

Whenthenewsreachedthe bishop'sparishioners,theypreparedamemorialservice.Itwas bannedbytheSovietauthori. ties.Thecountryatlargeremainedunawareofthebishop's deathuntilaweeklater.Then itwasannouncedinacurt,threelinecommunique,whichconcluded:"Accordingtothebestinformationavailable,thetank driverwasarrestedforspeeding."(Accordingtobetterinformation,thetankdriverwas promoted.)TheCatholicworld didnotlearnofthebishop'sdemiseuntillateinNovember. Thiswriterhasnowreceived,directlyfromunimpeachablesourcesintheCarpatho-Ukraine,the firstauthoritativeaccountofDr. Romzha'smurderandofthe eventswhichleduptoit.

UNIONWITHCZECHOSLOVAKIA.

BetweenWorldWarIand WorldWarII.theCarpatho-Ukraine-variouslyknownas RutheniaorCarpathorussiaformedtheeasternmostprovince ofCzechoslovakia.SlaysinAmericahadplayedadominantrole increatingthisunion.The area'ssecessionfromHungary wasvotedin1917byamajority oftheGreekCatholicCarpathoUkrainiansthenlivinginthe UnitedStates.UndertheleadershipofGeorgijZatkovits,a Pittsburghlawyer,theydeclared forentryoftheirhomelandasan autonomousterritory inthe newly-formeddemocraticrepublic ofCzechsandSlovaks.Andit wasZatkovitswhowasnamed theterritory'sfirstGovernor.

Inthelastmonthsofthewar theCzechoslovakLegion,which hadgonetoRussiatofightside bysidewiththeRedArmy,drew closerandcloser.TheCarpathn-Ukrainianswaitedeagerlyforthearrivaloftheirliberatingkinsmen.Thetinyterritoryconfidentlyexpectedthereaftertobereunitedwiththenew Czechoslovakia.

ButtheLegion-whoseranks wereeight),percent.CarpathoUkrainian-neverarrivedonits nativesoil.Itwasshuntedoff toanotherandbloodierpartof theadvancingfront,wherethousandsdied.TheRussianscame intotheCarpatho-Ukrainealone.

PRESSUREPOLITICS.

Thereasonsoonbecameapparent.TheKremlinhaddeterminedtotakeovertheliberatedterritoryfromitsloyalally. WhenCzechoslovakPresident EduardBenesarrivedinMoscowforpre-victoryconsultations, hewasnotifiedthattheCarpatho-Ukrainianswouldhaveto chooseby"plebiscite"between returntoCzechoslovakiaor "union"withtheUSSR.

REDS"ORGANISE"PLEBISCITE.

Towncriersweresentaround theterritorywithpetitions.First theycalledonthechildrento sign.Everychildinthedestitutevillageandhamletsreceivedahalf-poundofsugar. In thecitieseachwasgiventhe sugarandatickettothemovies. Nearly100,000youngstershappilyscribbledtheirnamesonthe papersputbeforethem. Aweeklater,thesamesummonswentouttotheadult population.Therewardfor signaturewasfortypoundsof corn.Virtuallyeverybodyinthe countryneededcorn.Thepetitionsmountedhigh.

BENESYIELDSTOFRAUD.

Intheend,thesignatureswere collectedintotwogreatvolumes withfineleatherbindings.A picturepaintedonthecover howedtheCarpatho-Ukrainian beartryingearnestlytogetinto Sovietterritory.Aninscripsaid:.."TheCarpatho-Ukrainian peoplebegFatherStalintoliberatethemfromtheforeignyoke andtakethemtothebosomof MotherUkraine."

Thebooksweredulydelivered to"FatherStalin."Photostat copiesofthis"populardemand" weresenttotheCzechoslovak EmbassyinMoscow.Helpless beforetheobvioushoax,the PragueGovernmentyieldedand announcedcessionoftheterritorytotheSovietUnion.

SUBVERSIONATTEMPTS.

Thisdone,theKremlinsetitself to"co-ordinating"thespiritual lifeofitsnewprovince.Afirst necessitywasliquidationofthe UniateChurch,whichconducts itsserviceinSlavonic,butrecognisesthesupremacyofthe Pope.Forthepurpose,Moscow recruitedaUniatepriestofLvov, oneFatherGabrielKostelnik, wireabandonedhiscreedinexchangeforabishopricinStalin's RussianOrthodoxChurch.

ThisworthyvisitedBishop RomzhainUzhorodandexhortedhimtofollowhimselfintothe Russianfold.Thebishopdeclined.'IamaCatholic,"he toldtheSovietagent. 01have swornallegiancetoRome,and1 believeintheHolyChurchwhich hassurvivedallattacksandterrorsandagainstwhichthegates ofHellshallnotprevail."

Someweekslater,inNovember,1946,theCarpatho-Ukraine prelatewaslockedupbytheSovietsinalocalgaol.

Thebishop'sfaithfulremained steadfast.EverySundaythey journeyedfromfarandwideto paytheirdevotionstohim.Behindtheirreligiousflags,they marchedaroundandaroundthe prisonforhours,insilenttribute,unafraidoftheRussian machine-gunsatopthewallsof thegaol. Aftertwomonthsofincarceration,thebishopwasreleased.His reappearancewasthesignalfor nation-widedemonstrationsof joy-withanovertoneofprotest againstSovietpersecution.,t

wascleartotheSovietsthatthe onlywaytheymightconvertthe Carpatho-Ukrainianpeoplewould heto"convert"theirbishop-or disposeofhim.

DEATHSOLVESNOTHING.

LastSeptember,Kostelnik againvisitedtheepiscopalpalace atUzhorod.Thistimehestayedtwodays,pleadingwiththe bishoptoembracetheRussian. Church.Dr.Romzhawasadamant. WhenKostelnikfinallydepartedwithemptyhands,thebishop summonedhispriestsandtold them:"Ifearthataperilouspath liesahead. Ishouldnotwish 'cmtosharemyfate,whatever itmaybe.Ifanyofyoudesirestoleaveme,heisfreeto doso."Noonesteppedforward. Thebishopthenbestowedthe Apostolicblessingupontheassemblage.

Withinamonth,BishopRomzha receivedanobleaccolade.The townofVelikyLuchky,hitherto hismostanti-Catholicparish, publiclyentreatedthebishopto takeitback.Itwasatriumph inthehistoryoftheGreekCatholicChurch.

Thebishoppreparedhimself forthejourneytoVelikyLuchky. Theconsecrationwasappointed forOctober25.Itwashislast exitfromtheUzhorodpalace. Foronthatday,ontheroadto VelikyLuchky,TheodorRomzha, CatholicBishopoftheCarpathoUkraine,wasambushedanddone todeathunderthetreadsofa Russiantank.

OnSaturdayafternoon.June5, atrailerbus,withacapacity load,leftPerthboundforNew Norcia,tocelebratetheannual reunionoftheOldBoys'Association.Thetripwasveryenjoyable,aseveryonesettleddown torenewacquaintanceswith schoolfellowsofformerdays andyoungerladsofmorerecent vintageItwasverygratifying toseesomanynewandyoung facesamongsttherecordcrowd present.

Duringtheweek-endtheactivitieswereenteredintowith greatspirit.ThegeneralCommunionofthe"OldBoys"took placeatthe7o'clockMasson SundayintheCollegeChapel. BothOldBoysandpresentboys attended,thelattergivinga festiveanrbyrenderingappropriatehymnsthroughoutthe Mass,celebrated,fortheoccasion,byVeryRev.FatherPrior, O.S.B.,intheabsenceoftheLori Abbott.TherestofSunday morningwasdevotedtothetennisandhandballtournament.The tenniswaswonbyD.Dixandhis presentdaypartner,J.Cox,while "Blue"Leahydefeatedallcornersinthehandball.Averyinspiringinterludeduringthetenniswastheofficialopeningone blessingofthesixnewtennis courtsbyRev.FatherPrior.As atributetotheOldBoys,who paidthesupremesacrifice,these courtswerenamed"TheOld Boys'MemorialCourts."These courtsareacredittotheBrothersandboysandallwhohelped intheircompletion. Withmuchurgingandcheering,theOldBoyswatched'the presentfootballteamromphome victorsoverBolgart,thusshowingthespiritofthegameisstill strong.Nodoubtthisgame broughtbackmanymemoriesof similargamesindaysgoneby. Ourtroops,freed fromthehot,blackholesofthe transports,wheretheyhad sweatoutafifty-dayvoyage acrosstheEquator,reallylet loosewhentheylandedinMelbourne.Thoughtheyhadalot ofwarbeforethem,theyhada goodpartofitbehind;sowhen theysteppedashoretheycelebrated.Onlythenightbefore theywereconfusedandfrightened youngsters;whentheystepped ashoretheywerelionised.Acceptingtherole,someofthem didtheirfirstheavydrinking;it helpedthemtoswaggermoreeasily.OneofthemwasPrivate EdwardLeonskifromNewYorx City.

IwentintotheRussellStreet Gaol,modelledafterthesixteenth-centuryprisonsofLondon, withthehalfwishthatI'dfail asthetwochaplainsbeforeme hadfailed;ifIweresuccessful I'dhavetogoallthewaywith theboy.ForEdwardLeonski hadbeensentencedbyaUnited StatesArmyCourtMartialto hangbytheneckuntildeadfor themurderoffourMelbourne women.

IcalledinattheM.P.'sguardingtheprisoner.Allfourthen ondutywerealsofromNewYorks City. Iaskedthemaboutthe prisoner.Theylikedhim;they'd bewillingtohelpinanyway theycould;theywantedtoworn withmeforhim.Onlyonewas aCatholic.WewereallAmericans.

AshoreatMelbourne,withall theappearanceofAmerica'sbest manhood,hetookwhattheport cityoffered;andwiththelax disciplineofthein-towncamphe hadplentyoftimeathisdisposal.Forthefirsttimehe tooktodrink.Hedidn'tknow why,exceptthatinsidehewas confused.

Leonskishiftedtheconversation anditturnedtothecamp,tothe townandthemurders.Ashe workedthestorygivenbythe papersfromhisbuddy,Leonski heardforthefirsttimewhathe haddone.Staggeringunderthe horrorofit,hewonderedaloudif hewerenotthemurderer.The youngerlad,frightenedwiththe burdenunloadedonhint,wentto hisimmediateofficer.Leonski wasarrestedandcondemnedto hangfromtheneckuntildeal.

Duringthetrialheadmitted nothingandhadthecourtpuzzledbyhisairofnonchalant bravado.Theycouldfindno answertothequestion,whydid hedoit?Hehadnomotive. Hewasmerelyayoungmale animalontheloose.Buthe wasayoungmaleanimalin whomwereburiedmanypictures ofsexcrimesfromthepulp magazines.

Thathehadsobrutallydestroyeddefencelesslifegave Leonskiresignationtohisdeath penalty;heregrettedonlythat nothingcouldbedonetoundo thedamage.

TwoinhabitantsofPerugia, SignoriMarrochiniandSant),ecchi,werethefirsttonotice thatthestatueapptaredtobe moving,ontheeveningofFebruary10th.Theysaidnothing, butsoonthestoryspreadthrough thevillage.Otherpeopleobservedthephenomenonandbegantotalkofamiracle.The statueisover21feetinheight, ofgildedbronze,weighingsome fifteentons.Itistheworkof thesculptorG.Colasanti,and wasplacedinitspresentposition in1930,sincewhennothingremarkablehadeverhappened. ThetownonthisSundayafternoonjustoozessedatenessand cleanliness.itwasnotlongbeforeonearrivedatthelovely greenbanksoftheslowflowing Avon.Icrossedovertheold bridgetowhereafewanglerson theothersideweregoing throughthemotionoffishing. Therewerenosignsofanygreat successes,and1askedoneold chapwhathehopedtocatch.He mentionedthenamesofafew lishthatshouldhavebeeninthe vicinity.Hehadratherabroad accent,and1didnotquiteget theirnames.

Fromhereonecouldgeta goodviewoftheMemorialTheatrejuttingoutovertheoppositebank.Itisaratherimposingredbrickbuilding,andalthoughsheerutilitarianindesign,itblendedinanamazing mannerwithitspicturesquesurroundingsOfcourse,itiscommonknowledgethatGeorgeBernardShawdoesnotlikeit.When theoldplayhousewasburnt downin1925(Iamnotpositive ofthisdate)hesaidthatthe firecouldnothavedestroyeda worsebuilding,andthatnowa theatreworthyofShakespeare wouldoccupythesite.Somesix orsevenyearslater,whenthe theatrewascompleted,G.B.S. sawitandbarked,"Jamfactory!"OnrecrossingtheAvon onthefringeofthetownIwanderedbacktowalkthroughthe groundsofHolyTrinityChurch. Thereseemedtobeagoodlynumberofvisitorsaround,andIdid notentertheoldbuilding(portionofitwasbuiltin1210)to seethegravesofShakespeare andhiswife,AnnHathaway.I resolvedtopayanothervisithere possiblyinthemorning,when therewouldnotbesomany aboutandonecouldhavethe guide-ifthereisonehere-to himself.

QuiteafewoftheShakespearefamily,hisfather,hisonly son,Hamnet,andJudith,his younger(laughter,areburiedin thischurchyard,butthesitesof theirgravesarestillunknown.

Afterafinebreakfast(that seemsanunderstatement,asit hadincludedAnEgg)Ivisited theBirthplaceinHenleyStreet, butthreeminutes'walkfrom whereIwasstopping.Here WilliamShakespearewasborn onApril23,1564.Hewasone ofafamilyofeight,allbutone ofwhomdiedbeforehim.The house,whichwaspurchased mainlyowlingtotheenergetic actionofCharlesDickens,forthe nationin1847,isinexcellent condition.Itisnowasmall museumofarticlesofShakespeareaninterest.Isupposethe twomostvaluablewerethe copiesofthefirstFolioof1623. Eachisvaluedatnolessthan £25,000wiichisalotofmoney foronebook. Icrossedoverthefineoldthirteenth-centuryarchedClopton Bridgeandstrolledalonganen chantinglittlepathalmostcompletelyshadedbytrees.Thesheer beautyofthecountryscene bathedinaNovembersunbeg-

windwastakingheavytollof theleavesthatwerecovering thepathwayinrichshadesof colourrangingfrompaleyellow todeepred.Icrossedover somefields,lookedatsomecute, neatlittlehaystacks,andreachedtheAvonaagin,acoupdeof milesaboveHolyTrinityChurch. Onpaymentoftheadmission feeof6d.,Iwasallowedtoenterthechurch.Itisaninter estingoldchurchinafinestate ofpreservation,and,apartfrom itsasociationwithShakespeare, itiswellworthavisit.Inthe chancelIsawthegravesofthe Poet,hiswife,andsomein-laws, andread(withsomedifficulty) thequaintversesengravedon thepavement.Beforeleaving thebuildingIhadalookatthe late15th.centuryfontinwhich thePoetwasbaptised,andsaw theentriesofhisbaptismand burialintheoldregisters.

AftervisitingtheMemorial TheatreMuseum,wherethereis aninterestingcollectionofsouvenirs,stageprops,etc.,ofGarwick,Mrs.Siddons,Irving,Mrs. Kendalandothergreatstagefiguresofthepast,Ireturnedto thetownpubliclibrary,whichis nexttotheBirthplaceinHenley Street.HereIwasanxiousto findoutsomefactsaboutShakespeare'slifeandalsoifhehad beenbaptisedaCatholic.Actuallyverylittleisknownabout hislife,andalthoughthereis muchconjectureconcerning manydetailsIhad,withinafew hoursto-day,seenthetwoleading(and,ofcourse,themostimportant)andindisputablerecordsofhislife-baptismand burial!-thebirthplaceandthe grave.Imaginemysurprise wheninthelibraryofthetown whosechiefindustryisShakespeare,andonlyfiffteenyardsor sofromtheroominwhichhe wasborn,Icouldonlydiscover TWObooksabouthim.Both wereofrecentorigin.Thefirst setouttoproveinasomewhat weirdandwonderfulmanner

IvisitedAnneHathaway's Cottagethismorning.Scorn- ingthelocalbusandthetwentiethcenturyroads,Iwalked acrossthefieldstothelittlehamletofShottery,amileorsofrom the,town.AsIdidsoIwonderedifyoungWillShakespeare hadalsohurriedalongthispath whenhehadaheavydatewith AnneItwouldhavebeenthe shortestroutefromhishomein HenleyStreet.AsIlooked aroundthefieldsandcouldonly seethespireofHolyTrinityto remindonethattherewasa towninthevalley,itseemedthat thescenevViaS,Isuppose,almost unchangedfromWill'sdays.I wonderwhatlittleversesor lovesonnetswereonthetipof histongueashehurriedacross tofarmerHathaway'spicturesquethatchedcottagetoaskfor thehandofhiseldestdaughter. Iseemedtobetheonlyvisitoronthescenesoearly,and Iwasabletohavealongand mostinterestingchatwiththe caretaker.Insummerthereis ,adailyaverageofroughlya thousandvisitors.Allsortsof celebritieshavebeenhere,and Iwastoldsomepricelessanecdotesaboutafewofthem.IregretthatIcannotsetthem(the respectableonesImean!)down here.Thecottageretainsa largeamountoftheoriginalfurniture,butIthoughtthemostinterestingthingaboutthecottagewasthatithadbeenthe homeoftheHathawaysfrom about1450untilitwaspurchasedbytheShakespeareBirthplace Trusteesin1892.Ididnotfind outifRichardHathaway's grandparentshadpaidcashfor it.Ifnot,anawfullotofrent musthavechangedhands!The friendlycaretakerfinallygave mecarefulinstructionshowto goacrosscountrytoWilmcoteto seethehomeofMaryArden (Shakespeare'smother).Itwas aninterestingfour-milewalk tothelittlevillageof Wilmcote.Ihadtogothrough theForestofArden.Thiswas easierthanIthought,because theforestnowhardlyexists,as ithasbeenclearedanddivide.' withtheusuallowhedges-a featureoftheEnglishcountry scene-bylocalfarmers.Acaretakershowedmethroughtheold homeandalsothebigdovecote outside.Heexplainedthelatter veryfullyandatgreatlength. St.Anthonyisamostunusual doctor,inmanyrespectsthe mostunusualandthemostcolourfulofthetwenty-nineblessedwiththisdistinction.Anthony wasnobishop.Hecomposedno notedtreatiseonthespiritual life;hehadnouniversitydegree, nordidheeversitinanyuniversitychair.Anthonyheldno postortitleofhonourinhislife inanyroyalorpapalcourt.Indeed,Anthonyisamostunusual doctor.What,then,ishisclaim toglory?Inwhatdoeshis fameconsist?Anthonypreached,andhepreachedmagnificently.Thousandscametohear him,richandpoor,noblesand prelates,merchants,soldiers, magistrates,oldandyoung.No oneresistedtheopportunityof hearingthismanofGodspeak Churchesweretoosmallforhis audiences.Anthonyspokein themeadowsandthemarket places,ontheslopeofhills,and inpublicsquares.

Anthonytaughtanddefended theImmaculateConceptionof Mary,herAssumptionandher divineMotherhood.Someplace hewritesthatMarywaspredestinedfromalleternityasthe MotherofGod.

Anthonyspokewithallthe eloquenceofwhichhewascapable.Peoplecametolaughin derision,butleftintearsofrepentance;theycametoridicule butlefttopraise,theycamein hatredbutleftinlove,they cametoscoffbutleftconverted.Anthonylovedtheheretics, buthatedtheirabominablebeliefsanddenouncedtheirpernicioustenetsbeforeall.So powerfullyandeffectivelydidhe speaktothem,bringingthemto thefeetofthecompassionate Christ,thatheearnedthetitle -HammerofHeretics. Constantlyhepreachedinthecities ofItalyandFrance,.particularly fromtheyears1227to1231. Whenthepeoplewouldnotlisten inonecity,hewenttoanother. Andononeoccasion,whentheir earsweredeafAnthonywent outandpreachedtothefishin thesea.Doyouknowofany otherDoctorwhopreachedto creaturesofthesea?Anthony did,andwhenthepeoplesawthe youngfriaraddressingthefish andtheyinturnlisteningas thoughcapableofreasoning,it softenedtheirheartsandthey soughtforgiveness.Bothanoratorandasaint spakeinthesewords:"Although theinfinitepowerofGod,my dearlybelovedfish,discoversitselfinalltheworksofcreation, asintheheavens,thesun,the moon,thestars,inmanorin otherperfectcreatures;neverthelessthegoodnessofthedivine majestyshinesoutinyoumore eminently.For,notwithstanding,youareimprisonedinthe deepabyssofwaters,tossed amongthebillows,thrownupand downbytempests,deaftohearing,dumbtospeech,andterribletobehold,thedivinegoodnessshowsitselfinyouaftera mostwonderfulmanner.Inyou areseenthemightymysteriesof aninfinitegoodness.Theholy Scripturehasalwaysmadeuseof youasthetypesandshadowsof someprofoundsacrament."

WhatCauses

ButeloquentasAnthony wouldbeinspeakingonChrist andMary,orgentleashecould beinspeakingtodumbcreatures, thesaintcouldbeaflamingfire inveighingagainstusury,luxury, greedandsimilarsins.Anthonyfearednoone.Whenonce atyrantprincegrounddownhis people,Anthonywentbefore him,hiseyesblazingwithanger, anddemandedthattherulerstop hisinjustice.Andtheprince did.SaintAnthonywasarsot. pioneersocialworker.Hehad aspecialloveforthelowlyand thepoor,andtheyreciprocated byalikeaffection.Heknew howtogetthebestoutofthem. Athiswordswarceasedand peacereturned,soldierslaid downtheirarms,andmerchants gaveuptheirillegalprofits.

Possiblythemostamazing factaboutthecareerofSt.Anthonyisitsbrevity.Hisentire activelifeistelescopedinto abouteightyears.Anthonydied whenonlythirty-six,wornoutby diseaseandfatigue,notthinalio emaciatedasstatuesandpaintingoftendepicthim,butcorpulentwithdropsy,travellingand preachingonlywithgreatsuffering.Thesaintliterallywore himselfoutindefenceofChrist andHisGospel.

InhisgreatheartAnthony seemstocombinethequalitiesof FrancisandBonaventure,the pietyandtheseraphicsimplicityoftheone,thelearningand theangelicunctionoftheother, thehumilityandgentlenessof theone,thewisdomanderuditionoftheother,theappealof theoneandtheforesightofthe toiler.Anthonyisamostremarkablesaintandamostremarkabledoctor.Hecoulddoa goodjobofwashingdishesin FloriandjustaswellspeakbeforetheHolyFatherinRome; hecouldliveinsolitudeandsilenceandhecouldpreachbefore thousandsdaily.

AndAnthony'slovablequalitiesseemtohavebeenprojected intospaceandtime.Heisstill thefriendofthelowlyandthe poor;theyloveandhonourhim. Howmanymillions,bothCatholicsandnon-Catholics,venerate andsalutehim!Hisstatueor paintingstandsinnearlyevery church,amonumenttotheplace heholdsintheheartsofthe faithful.Indeeditmightbesaid that,nexttoOurLadyandSt. Joseph,nosaintissohonoured asSt.AnthonyofPadua.Folks whohaveneverheard,andperhapsneverwillhear,ofSt. ThomasAquinas,St.JohnDamascene,ofSt.JohnChrysostorn,of St.GregorytheGreat,orofany oftheotherChurchdoctors, knowandesteemSt.Anthonyof Paduaastheirfriendandconfidant.

Moreover,whateverwesee andwhateverwefindasadmirableinthelifeandcharacterof Anthony,thereisonefactthat mustnotbeforgotten:italone isthesecretofhissanctityand thekeytothedeepeffectiveness ofhispreachingandhisdeep penetrationoftherevealedWord ofGod.Thissecretandthis keyishisgreat-souledlove,so enflamedastoburnwiththedesireofmartyrdom.LittlewonderthataburningheartisrepresentativeofAnthony;his heartwasaflamingtorchfor loveofChristandloveofsouls. Suchatwinloveisthemailspringofhissanctityandhis learning.Suchalovefurnishes uswithunderstandingofhiscolourfulandextraordinarylife.
