"AmericanSaint,"byMabel Farnum,isthestoryofFrancesca Cabrini,Italiannun,whobecame anAmericancitizenin1909.She diedatColombusHospital,CTfcago,onDecember22,1917.In 1948thefirststepstowardsher canonisationweretaken.The inquirywentonsuccessfully,and onJuly31,1938,PopePiusXl. issuedtheDecreeofBeatification. TheDecreeofCanonisationwas issuedbythepresentPontiff, PiusXII.,onJanuary11,1944.

OnJuly7,1946,shewassolemnlyraisedtothehighesthonours ofthealtarandpronounceda Saint.Itwasaninstanceof singularlyrapidpromotionofa Cause. thisbooktracesbriefly,and inplain,unadornedlanguage, thesalientfeaturesofMother Cabrini'slife.Itpurportstobe abookforyoungpeople,andthis mustbeitsexcuseforappearing scrappyanddisjointed.Adult readerswithaneyeforliterary excellenceandatasteforwelldocumentedbiography,maywell bedisappointed,asthestyleis almostjournalisticinitsbareness.However,theyneednot therebybedissuadedfromperusingwhatiscertainlyaninterestingrecordoftheworld'smost modernsaint.

FrancescaCabriniwasbornon July15,1850.Offrailanddelicateconstitution,shewasfrom thefirstseizedwithanambition shecouldhardlyhopetofulfil. Shewantedtobeamisisonary. Herfather,afarmerinLombardy,innorthernItaly,unconsciouslyfannedthesmallchild's ambitionbyreadingstoriesfrom amissionmagazinetohisfamily ofthirteenboysandgirls.Francesca,theyoungest,listenedto thestorieswithraaitattention. HermotherwasaregularattendantatdailyMass.

Aftermakingtwounsuccessful attemptstoentertheConventof theDaughtersoftheSacred Heart,Francescawasaskedby theparishpriestofCodognoto renderassistanceatanorphanageinthattown.Sheremainedthereforsixyears,during ohichtimeshewasmadeSuperior.Sheencounteredmanydifficultiesattheoutset,owingtothe hostilityofstaffmemberswho hadbecomelaxandungracious. Thiswasreallythebeginningof herlifeasareligious,andshe wentontofoundanewOrder knownastheMissionarySisters oftheSacredHeart.Francesca nurturedamostferventdevotion totheSacredHeart. Determinedtobeatruemis-

sionary,MotherCabriniembracedwitheagernesstheopportunitytotransplantherOrderto theU.S.A.Herlifewasnow oneofceaselesstravelbetween ItalyandAmerica,andupand downthelengthofthatcontinent.Shealsovisitedotner partsofEurope,includingEngland,FranceandSpain.Inall, duringthe67yearsofherlife shefounded67housesforner communityofdevoteddaughters inreligion.

ThesecretofMotherCabrini's extraordinarilyproductivelife wastwofold.First,therewasher deepsanctity;and,secondly,she hadanamazingcapacityfor work."Wemustwork,"she wouldsay,"whilethereisstill time."Shewasencouragedin thisregardbythebenigncounselofherfriendandspiritual father,thesaintlyLeoXIII.The twooftenmet,andwhatacommunionoffeelingmusthaveexistedbetweentwosuchchoico souls."Ah,Cabrini,"saidthe Popetoher,"youhavethespirit ofGod.Nowcarryittothe wholeworld."Andonanother occasion:"Work,Cabrini!Work! Thenwhataheavenwillbe ours!"

Itisuselessattemptingtobeat aboutthebush,andsoconcocta half-hearteddefenceoftheproduction.Onemightsaywith truththattheshowwasrightly lit,brilliantlydressedanstagedamidadmirablesettings.But itwouldbeapoorsortoftheatricalcompanywhichcouldnot managetheseminimumrequirementsinacapitalcity.

Thetruthofthematteristhat themusicalscoreiscompletely undistinguishedandthelibretto asbereftofthequalitiesthat endureasapieceoftinsel.The humourisnotmerelyRabelasian,butrabidlysexualforthe greaterpart.Thiswasallthe moreregrettableinviewofthe rollickingfundisbursedina minorityofscenes.Onthecreditsidewemustmakespecial mentionoftheuproariouscomedyprovidedinthesecondact, whenchiefcomedianFredMurrayimpersonatesDr.Mackenzie, ofMenthoidsfame,andalsoreconstructsthefamoustrademarkofScott'sEmulsion.

Mr.Murray,aswehaveremarkedinapreviousreview,is aninfectioullygaycomedian, andthereissomeothergood talentinthiscompany.Itwill heinterestingtoseehowthey allshapeuptothechallengeimplicitintheirnextandfinal production-theglorious"White Horseinn."

LedaVeerkind,amedicalstudentofZagnira,animaginary state"somewhereinEurope,"is grantedavisioninwhichshe sees"aportionofGod'sKingdom,"andismovedbyDivineinspirationtorevealtoallwhom hecanreach,theeternaltruthof Hisall-prevailingpreesnce.Such amission,asistobeexpected, bringsherintosharpconflict withGeneralGurgani,military representativeofthetotalitarian SupremeCouncil,whichgovernsthecountry.Thestoryof theplayisthestoryofLedaand hergrandfather,AntonVeerkind, intheircrusadeagainstatheistic ideologiesand,inafineclimax, showshowGodandHistruthwill alwaysrisetriumphanteven thoughthosethroughwhomHe isrevealedmayhavetheirbodies destroyed.

Anemptylittlefilmdealing withtheteenagersofthelast generation.Thethoughtthat emergesisthatsomanyofthe minorlunaciesthatastonishtoday'sparentsarenotmoreextravagant,butsimplydifferent fromthecrazesthatonceabsorbedthosesameparents.

"TheTwoMrs.Carrolls"(Ambassadors):

AthrillerwithBogartand BarbaraStanwyckthatworksup quiteabitofauthenticspine chilltowardstheend.ThesecondMrs.Carrolladoresherhusband,atemperamentalartist withaLondonreputationand smoothways,butwhenhetakes topaintinginalockedroomby dayandbringingherwarmmilk withafunnytastebynight,she callsthecops,whomanage,just intimetosavethesecondMrs. C.fromjoiningthefirstMrs. C.

Inmanyplacesthisfilmis sordidandunpleasant,andis recommendedonlyformature adultaudiences.

"GreenDolphingreet"(Metro), wasthewinnerofM,G.M.'sfirst annual200,000dollarnovelcontest.itcostM.G.M.overfour milliondollarstoputitonthe screen.

Afterhavingbeendopedina Chineseporthestaggersdown tothewharftofindhisship gone.HefinallygetstoNew Zealandandmakesupwithan oldSt.Pierreacquaintance(Van Heflin).

Afterhavingsettleddownin businessinthelumberindustry, hewriteshometoaskDonna Reid,the"sweet"sister(you cantellbecauseshefluttersher eyelashes)tocomeoutand marryhim.

WhenSisterLanaarrivesit allcomesbacktohim:hewas drunkwhenhewroteandgotthe namesmixedup.

Themarriage,foundedonthe slipofapen,managestosurviveyearsandyearsofdull quarrels,atouchofMaoriwar, andabeaut.earthquake.

MeanwhilebackinSt.Pierre, dejected"sweet"MissReidhas decidedtobecomeanun.Sister Lanaandherhusbandgethome justintimetoseehertakeher vowsinamushychurchscene.

Goodfamilyshow-thekids willlovetheearthquake,ifthey cansitthelongshowout.

"TheGuilty"(Royal):

Themurderwhichprovidesan excuseforthismysteryyarnis complicatedbythefactthata twinsurvives,andpiquancyis addedbyherbeingthelessworthyofsurvival.Theplotis misleadingratherthanmystifying,asadetectivebumbles throughafraternityofsuspects beforeclosingthecase.

NowthattheReferendumhasbeenwonorlost,dependingonthepointofviewofeachindividual,perhapswe mightremarkonafewpointsofthecampaign.

Firstandforemostwastheabusivemannerinwhich thevariouspartiesstatedtheircase.Itusedtobea maximofsounddebatingthatonceapersonresortedto personalabuseitwasasuresignthathehad.lostthecontest.Whatarewetothinkoftheleadersofbothpartieswho'hadtobolsteruptheirargumentsbystirringup themudofpettypartyandpersonalquarrels?Anational issueshouldbefought,lostorwononanationalplane. Thecrisisfacingthepeoplewasinsomerespectsjustas importantasthemajordecisionsgoverningAutralia'sattitudetothewar.Whenpersonalanimositiesandpetty jealousiesareresortedtobyleadingpoliticians,it.makes oneseriouslydoubtnotonlytheirabilitybut,indeed,and whatisfarmoreserious,theirsincerity.

Anotherfactorthatemergedfromthecontestwas thecompleteignoranceofthemuralaspectofthepolitical pointsatissue.Welookedinvainthroughthepublicationsandreportsofthespeechesofbothpartiesfora Christianapproachtothequestion.Wesearchedinvain toseewhethereitherpartytookintoconsiderationthe moralityofthequestionsundervote.Wesearchedbut couldnotfind.

Anotherquestionwhichshouldhavebeendebated fullywaswhetherornotfullandperpetualGovernment controloftheitemsmentionedintheReferendumwould makeAustraliaintoyetanotherPoliceState.Thequestionwa.:,notdealtwithfully,andit,seemedthatbothpartieswereafraidoftheconsequencesofraisingsuchanimportantissueandprobingittoitsdepths.

Finally,wewonderhowmanypeoplerecognisethe valueoftheReferendum.Theyseemedtoresentthe "waste"ofmoneyinvolvedinputtingsuchavitalquestion tothepeople.Theyfailedtorealise,andtobethankful for,thefactthatwestillhavesomesayinthegovernmentofourcountry.ThepeoplesofEuropeandAsia wouldindeedappreciatethefreedomwhichwestillretain andwhich,unfortunately,infartoomanycases,donotappreciateourselves.

Thenumberofdeliberatelyinformal,abusive,obscene andinsomecasesblasphemousballotpapersreturnedatthe boothsisatragicmanifestationoftheignoranceandapathy ofsomanyofourpeople,especiallywhenatthepresent daythousandsaresufferingsimplybecausetheysought thesam3rightsaswehaveand,pleaseGod,willcontinue tohaveinthefuture.

Thevotingwasindeedclearanddecisive.Itisapity thatthepeoplewerenotconsultedonothermajorpoints ofnationalimportance.PerhapstheresultsofthisReferendumwillteachallpartiesandallgovernmentsthat Australiaisstillademocracy,andtheopinionofthepeopleshouldbeconsultedastohowtheyandtheircountry shouldherun.

Abrotherstilllives,andiswiththe PassionistFathersatMarrickville,Sydney.Twlosisterswere membersofreligiouscongregations.Asayoungman,Patrick Cluneprovedastudentofunmistakablepromiseandpersonal charmwhileattheCollegeof Ennis,inClare,Ireland.EnteringAllHallows,hepursueda mostbrilliantscholasticalcourse and,beforethecanonicalage, wasordained,byaspecialdispensationfromtheHolySee,at theearlyageoftwenty-twoand ahalfyears.AfterhisordinationhetravelledtoAustraliaand wasattachedtotheGoulburn diocese(recentlyelevatedtothe titleofanarchdiocese),inNew SouthWales.Hewasresident attheCollegeinthecity,and wasProfessorofEnglishLiteratureandHistory.Owingtoillhealth,however,hewascompelledtoresign.Afterashortholidayinthecountry,hereturnsd toGoulburnandbecameassistantpriestattheCathedral.But thelifeofthesecularpriestwas notforhim.Hefeltthathe wouldliketodosomethingmore, andsomadeapplicationforadmissionintotheCongregationof theMostHolyRedeemer,which OrderheenteredonJuly15, 1893.

Foranumberofyearsafterwardshewasengagedingiving MissionsinEnglandandIreland.

Intheyear1899Dr.Gibney,BishopofPerth,invitedtheRedemptoristFatherstoWestern Australia,andamongthosesent tofoundthenewhousewasDr. Clune.Variedweretheremembrancesofthosepioneeringdays ofthenewOrder,andmanyof theIrishexileswhoborethe burdenandtheheatoftheday, "blazingthetrack"and''carryingtheirswagout-back,"hada warm"ceadmilefailte"forDr. Clune,ashebroughtthemthe consolationoftheirreligionand gatheredthemforMassandtoe SarramentsinplaceswhereMass wasnevercelebratedbefore.Towardstheendof1904,Dr.Clune wastransferredtoNewZealand, havingbeenappointedthefirst SuperioroftheRedemptorist foundationintheDominion. BacktoWesternAustraliain 1909,hewasappointedtothe RectorshipoftheMonasteryat NorthPerth.Hisreturngave joytobothpriestsandpeonle. WhenBishopGibneyresignedin 1910,Dr.Clunewasappointedto succeedhimasBishopofPerth, andhisconsecrationtookplacein theCathedralonSt.Patrick's Dayin1911.
