Aworldshakenbywarsand rumoursofwars,acivilisation eprivedalmostofconscience,is otlikelytobeshockedbythe 'daring",exploitsof19th.celluryIbsen.Thisgloomytrutn wasaffirmedattheRepertorythis lonthwhenIbsen's"Ghosts' vasproduced. Whentheplaywasfirstpublished(in1881)itprovokedsuch stormofcriticismthatnoone taredproduceitfornearlytwo years.Itwitsfirstgivenata semi-privategathering,andten yearspassedbeforetheplaywas introducedintoEngland.Itsreeptiontheresurpassedinvituperativeferocityanythingthat hadcomeoutoftheContinent.
Whatwasthereinthisplayto soarousemen'sire?Ibsenhimselfadmittedthathehadsetout "tomoveafewboundaryposts;" butwewhohavelivedoutof boundsforyearsmustsmileindulgentlyathisclaimIbsen wasaniconoclast,butallour idolshavebeenbroken.
PhilosophyofDespair.
In"Ghosts"Ibsenmakesthe widowAlvinghiscentralfigure. Byslowdegreesherevealsher tragicpast.Whilealltheworld believesthatthelateCaptain Alvingwasamanofhonourand alovinghusband,welearnthat inrealityhewashatefuland faithless.Mrs.Alvinghaspatientlybornealifetimeofmisery forthesakeofherson,whomshe sentawayquiteyoungsothat hewouldneverknowthetrutn abouthisfather.Theyoungman nowreturnstoher,anditwould seemthatthewidowistoend herdaystranquilly,secureinthe knowledgethatthedeadpasthas burieditsdead.Notso,how ever.Ghostsofthepastarise inunexpectedformstotorment her,andindreadfulprogressionthedifficultiesofthepresent, andfutureunfold.Theplay endsonanoteofstarkhorror, withthewidowconfrontedwith thechoiceoftakingherson's lifeorallowinghimtolingeron inaperpetualnightmareof madnessandimpotence,thevictimofhereditaryvenerealdisease. Theplayisunrelievedbyany rayofhope.Objectionsfrom thepublicofIbsen'sdaywere basedonseveralgrounds,buton nonemoresecurelythanonthe interwovenphilosophyofdespairwhichvitiatedeverygood impulseissuingfromtheheroic Mrs.Alving.Ibsendeniedthat hewasanadvocateofNihilism, deniedthathewaspreachingany doctrineorrevoltingagainstany- thingmoredeep-seatedthanconvention.Butitislittleusea murdererdenyingthatheintendedtocommitmurder.Inthe playIbsengaveMrs.Alvingno chanceofhappiness,rewarded herconstancyandgooddeeds withmoreandmoremisfortune andmentalanguish,putherfeet ontheroadtoruin,andlefther attheendoftheplaywithblackestdoomstaringherintheface. Christianity,whichmighthave helpedher,wasexposedasa shaminthepersonofPastor Manders;shewasdeniedeven humansympathyaswellasfilial support,andher,Alholelifewas seenas"awalkingshadow a taletoldbyanidiot,fullofsound andfury,signifyingnothing."
Asintheseenlighteneddays weareusedtosuchphilosophy, andindeedacceptitasanexplanationoflife,noonewasshocked by"Ghosts"attheRepertory. Therewasstilllesschance,of course,thatanyonewouldbeappalledbydigsatreligionor morbidreflectionsonvenereal diseaseThesethingsarenow oureverydaymeat.
NotSuchGreatStuff.
Wemusttarryamoment, though,topullawaysomeofthe trailingfestoonsofpropaganda
andpopularfancywhichinvest "Ghosts"withanunwarranted ofgreatness.Becauseitattackssociety,andbecauseit suitsthebookofthemodernisticpaganswhosenosestwitch eagerlyatthefirstscentofany revoltagainstcustomortradition,nottomentionChristianity, ithasbeenacclaimedasamilestoneindrama,theverygreat- estofallIbsen'splaysThisis sheernonsense.Asaneventin Ibsen'slifethepublicationofthe playmightberegardedasboth significantandmemorable,but weshouldnotallowthehurly- burlyofitsbirthtomisleadus intoacclaimingitasanunsurpassedpieceofdrama.There aresomebadflawsintheconstructionoftheplay-forinstance,theunduestressplacedon theinsuranceoftheproperty whichMrs.Alvingintendedtodedicatetothememoryofherhusband-anditcannotbesaidthat thedramaticqualityisasmuch inevidenceasthemelodramatic. ThiswasborneoutbythereactionofaudiencesattheRepertory,whenlaughteroftengreetedsituationsthatwereintended tobe Thisfullofhigh-powereddrama. tendencyofIbsentoawaken mirthinsteadoffeelingsoftrag- edywasapparentalsowhenthe rniversityDramaticSocietypro- duced"HeddaGabler"lastyear. ItseemstopointtotheconclusionthatIbsendoesnotplayunerringlyonthestringsofhuman emotions.Hecreatessituations whichtousinthe20th.century seemmelodramatic.Againdialogueplaystoogreatapartin "Ghosts"attheexpenseofaction.Itmightfairlybeclaimedthat"Ghosts"is"dated,"and thisisachargethatcouldnever
oelevelledatthemuchmore ancientdramaofShakespeare.'treatmentofthePlay. AsMrs.Alving,thataccomplishedactress,NancyLee,wassuperb.Shedidnoteverappeartobeoutoftouch.She broughtdignityandbreedingtotherole.Hervoicewasexcellentlycontrolled. Herson,OswaldAlving,was playedbyJohnShort.Hisvoice seemedtooscillatecontinuallybetweentworegisters,andhiswork wasstronglyreminiscentofhis performancein"OedipusRex." Maybeheconsideredtheroles werenotdissimilar;butIcannot sayheimpressedmewithany- thingbeyondhisabilitytospeak distinctlyatrapid-firerate,and torepeat"Thesun thesun" inasonorousandaltogetherexcellentmonotone.litcertainly failedtoawakentheslightest feelingof.sympathyinme,andI consideritwashistasktodo that. unhinged,Hismindwasobviously too,fromhisfirstappearance,sothathismadness wasnoshocktoanyoneinthe audience.Itshouldhavebeen.
Imustvigorouslydisagreewith HowardSmith'sinterpretationof PastorManders.Atonestage inthescript,Mrs.Alvingrefers tohimplayfullyasaperfect baby;Mr.Smithapparentlytook thewordstoheartandbecame childish.Heseemedtothine itwashisbusinesstomakeMandersinanewhenhewasn'tbeing hypocritical.Heconsequently brokedownthedramaticatmosphereagainandagaintoinduce theaudiencetosnigger.Itwas hadforMrs.Alving,andbadfor theplay.Attimesonewonderedwhethertheplaywassuppos 'adtobeatragedyora'farce, thewayitwasbeingdune.
JohnBottomleywasnotconvincingasJacobEngstrand.He seemedaltogethertoojovially senileinarolewhichcalledfor morecraftiness,greaterhardness. Theremainingmemberofthe cast,CherryGertzel,wasexcellentasRegina.
ProductionwasbyJeansTweedie,andsheisnotlikelytorememberitasoneofhernotable successes.
Anabidingimpressionbrought awayfromtheplayisthatIbsen isasdeadasthedodo.

Ifoundtheplayinteresting. Itwascertainlyeverybitasinterestingasthemajorityofplays thatfindtheirwayontothe beards.Itconcernedtheflutter tha,taroseamongrelativesof thedeceasedSirSamuelLepper whenthecontentsofhiswill weredisclosed.Insteadofeach vulturereceivinganequalshare ofthecarrion,thelotwenttoa partywhodidn'twantit.This gentlemaneventuallysolvedthe problemofdistributionbygivingitalltoayoungladywhom thefamilyregardedasanoutsider,butwhowasactuallyanillegitimatedaughtertothedeceased.Shethenmarriedher benefactor.
CreditableCharacterisation.
Admittedlytheplotwasnot extraordinary,andtheactual endingdidcertainlyhaveanartificialsmackaboutit.Butthe playwasnotwholly,oreven largely,dependentonplotforits success.Itconcentratedon characterisation,andinthe characters.ofKate,thehousekeeper,AdamBothwell(to whomtheestatewasbequeathed) EstherCorken,FannyCairns, Edward.ScantleburyandJenny Conn,therewasscopeformuch .finework.
Wemustsaythattoalarge extentthepeopleWhofilledthese rolesacquittedthemselvescreditably-nonemorecreditably thanSusetteSkuthorpinthe roleofKate.Shewasoutstanding.Shelookedthepart, shehadthemostconvincingaccentandshemovedaboutwitha settledairofresignation,andin amannermostconsistentwith hercalling,ageandtempera-

Itisnottoomuchtosaythatthebroadcastsgivtnby MonsignorFultonSheenattheMelbourneCentenaryhave causedasensationthroughouttheCommonwealth.He appearsasoneofthegreatoratorsofourday,andhisonslaughtsagainstCommunism-sosimple,solucid,and withalsotelling-musthaveaprofoundinfluenceinthis country.Butthemustmemorableaspectofhisvisitfor Catholicswillundoubtedlybehisspecialisminthematter ofconversions. Inthismatteritisunderstood,of course,thatnotoneconversionisattributabletohuman effort,howeversaintly,skilledorsincere.Faithisagra- tuitousgiftfrontGod,infusedintothesoulatHispleasure,andoftenforreasonsincomprehensibletothehuman mind.Nonetheless,Goddoesemployfiniteagenciesto leadpeopletowardsthetruthadtodisposemindsand heartsforitsfittingreception.InthisroleMonsignor Sheenhashadphenomenalandspectacularsuccess,and underGodhasdrawnmanyprominentandimprobable peopleintotheTrueFold-

IwasbroughtuptounderstandthatTheRecordexistedas themouthpieceoftheCatholic Faithandforthepropagationof CatholicisminthisState,andas suchitstoodforhonesty,truthfulnessandChristiantolerance thatunlesspoliticaldecisionsor actionscomeintodirectconflict withtheteachingsandlawsof GodaslaiddownbythePope andhisenthronedrepresentatives,TheRecordhasnoright toendeavourtoswaytheCatholic flockonewayoranotheragainst thedecisionsofConstitutional Government.AsaCatholicand amemberoftheLabourParty, Iresenttherecentunwarranted attacksontheFederalLabour Government,itsmembersandour PrimeMinister,Mr.Chifley.One sometimesgiventoimpulsive thoughttowardstheseimpetuous

ButonceaCatholicoraunionist allowsoutsidedestructiveelements tointerferewithhispracticeas aCatholic,oraunionist,the CatholicisnolongeraCatholic northeunionistaunionist.They havebothcastasidetheprinciplesoftheirrespectiveorganisations.
ThereforeIsaywithconviction thatnoorganisationhastaken morepositiveactiontocombat CommunismthantheAustralian LaborParty.ThereisnonecessitytopointtoQueenslandor elsewhere:theveryproofiswithinthisStateitself,forthereis notoneinstancethatcanbe pointedoutwheretheA.L.P.has nottakenpositiveactiontorid itselfofknownCommunistsand theirsubsidiaryorganisations. Unfortunately,theactionsofthe A.L.P.arenotmadeeasierby thosearmchaircriticswhotalk withtheirtonguesintheir cheeksandlaudthepoliticalopportunismofMr.Menziesand hisfellowcollaborators.

Mrs.Dominishwasbornin SouthAustraliaseventy-four yearsago.Sheresidedonthe Goldfieldsfortwenty-twoyears, andthereservedherapprenticeshipasawillingandgenerous helperineveryappealfor ChurchandConvent.Shebrought herhousewithhertoSouth Perth,whereshelivedfortwenty-fiveyears,watchingtheparishgrowandthebuildingsarise, allthequickerforthehelpshe gave,andherexamplewasfollowedbyherboysandgirls.
Sheprayedwellandprayed often,andinherhometherewas anatmosphereofprayer,encouragedbythepiouspictures andimagesthatlookeddown withbenedictionuponthisgood womanleadingthewayforher childrentofollow.
Peacefullyandconfidentlythe endcame,andofheritcantruly besaid,"Shesleepswiththe sleepofpeace."Fullyconscious,shereceivedthelastritesof herChurch,whichshelovedso deeplyandservedsofaithfully.
ARequiemMasswassaidfor thereposeofhersoulatSt.Columba'sChurch,SouthPerth,on Saturday,April17,bytheRt. Rev.MonsignorMcMahon,P.P. Thechurchwaswellfilledbyher manyfriendsoutsidetheparish andherfervidadmirerswithin.

AJesuitstoodbeforeachurch onahilltopinChina.Helookeddownonavastplaincovered withricepaddiesandcrisscrossedwithcountlessriversand canalsthatglistenedlikesilver bandsthrownhaphazardona carpetofgreen.Atintervals alongtheabnksoftherivers werethefarmers'hutswith thatchedroofsthatgleamed goldunderthesmilingChinasun. Anddoubtlessmanyaneyein thevalleywasdailyraisedtothe hilltopwherethechurchwithits tallspirepointedtoheaven,and manyaheartwasraisedtoHim
musthavebeensoulsinthem. Buttheyweresofew.Andhow couldhecalleventhesefetedto theChurchontheHill,andif theycame,howmanyofthem wouldunderstandtheChinesehe spoke?Hewasgladthathis stayattheChurchontheHill wasover.
Itwasnightwhenhestepped intothelittleskiffthatwasto takehimbacktoShanghai.And itwasnightintheheartofthe missionary.Settlingdownin theskiffhegavehimselfupto musingsnotatalllikethegoldendreamshedreamedbeforehe

Butthemissionarysawnot theemeraldplain,thesilverrivers,northegoldenhuts;andhis backwastowardthetallspire ofthechurch.Whenhewasa youngJesuitinAmericahehad visionedmillionsofpaganChinesewaitingforthewordofGod; butfromwherehestoodonthe hillhecouldnotseeasinglepersononthatwholevastplain. Myriadstarsanda'silver moonshonennthefieldsandthe
liverbanksandonthethatched hutstilltheygleanedIlse goldenbeadsandchainsofsileronanemeraldfloor.Itwas beautifulandthemissionary thoughthehadneverseensuch beautybefore.Ithadalways beenthisbeauteous,hemuses, butoneneededthelightofheatentoseeitinallitssplendour.
