OnehundredyearsagoMelbourne,thenPortPhilip,wasbut anoutlyingparishofSydney, withitstwenty-fivehundredCatholicsoulsservedbyasolitary .priest.BythegraceofGod, thesefigureshavebeenmultipliedathousandfold,andthe mo.lernCityofMelbournestands inthesteadofPortPhilip-a citywhich,becauseofwiseplan-ningandgoodbuilding,to-day ranksamongstthemostbeautifulandculturedcentresofthe world.
Ihavecomethousandsofmiles toAustralia,cometopaytri- butetoyourcityandcommem oratethisCentenaryoftheCatholicChurchofMelbourne, whichhassowondrouslypros-peredunderthethreeveryremarkable,butverydifferent, great-souledprelatesofIrish birthandlineage,threedevote.t andgreat-heartedloyalcitizens oftheiradoptedlandofAustralia.ArchbishopGould,the founder,plantedandlaboured tirelesslyandfruitfullyfor thirty-eightyearsArchbishopCarr,theorganiser,fosteredand multipliedthegrowthforthirtyoneyears.ThencameyourpresenteminentArchbishopMannix. OneofthemostcolourfulfiguresintheprocessionwasabeardedArchbishop, whoworeaturbanofcloth-of-gold.HewasMarIvanios,ofIndia,who,withhis followers,worshipsintheMaroniterite.Hecarrieda500-year-oldCopticcross sparklingwithjewels.
Thecrowd,whichbegantocongregateinandaroundtheCathedralaftertheearly morningMasses,numbered4,000whentheLiturgicalReceptionbegan,and,according totheMelbourne"Age,'hadgrownto10,000forthePontificalHighMass.

Onehundredyearsagothe firstBishop,theenterprising JamesA.Goold,tookpossession oftheDiocesenewlyerectedby Ourpredecessorofblessedmemory,PiusIXSincethenthe historyofMelbournehasbeen oneofcontinuousprogressand advancement,keepingpacewith thehistoryofVictoriaandofthe entireContinentofAustralia. Astheresourcesofthecountry weregraduallyexploredanddeveloped,thepopulationofVictoriarapidlyincreased,thereby creatinganurgentandarduous problemforthefirstBishopot thenewDiocese,uponwhomde volvedtheresponsibilityofprovidingforthereligiousneedsot thenumerousCatholicimmigrants.
TheProvidenceofGod,governingallthingswithinfinite wisdom,wasnotunmindfulof theneedsofthegrowingCatho liccommunitiesscatteredover thosewideareas.Asthenumbersofthefaithfulmultionsu, missionarypriestswerefoundfor thenewharvest-field-menendowedwiththephysicalendueanceandwiththezealandfirmnessofpurposewhichwererequiredforlayingthefoundations ortheChurchinthepioneerdays ofAustralia.Throughtheirenesgeticandself-sacrificingtoil, ChurchesandChapelswerebuilt inthevariouscentresandsoon theProvinceofVictoriawasso welldevelopedthatportionsof theoriginalterritoryofMelbournewereerectedintotheseparateDiocesesofBallarat, SandhurstandSale.
Convincedthatalleffortssn behalfoftheCatholiccause wouldhavebeeninvainunless thechildrenwereprovidedwith asoundChristianeducation, ArchbishopGooldsetaboutthe difficulttaskofestablishingCatholicschoolsfortheyouthof theDiocese,andforthispurpose
heenrolledtheservicesofdevotedreligious,bothmenand women.Withtheirdevotedcollaboration,andsupportedbytrie generoussacrificesofhisfloc's, theworthyPastorlaidthefoundationsofthatnetworkofinstitutionsofCatholiceducationand ofcharitywhichadornthercn. dioceseofMelbourneto-day.
MASSIVEEDIFICE.
ThroughtheperseveringexertionsofArchbishopCarr,the CathedralofSaintPatrickwas completedandconsecrated in 1897.Thatmajesticandstatelyedifice,dedicatedtothePatronSaintofthecountryto whichAustraliaisindebtedfut herfirstmissionariesandfogthe majorityofherCatholicimmigrants,standsto-dayasamono mentofarchitecturedominating thecityofMelbourne.Inits contrasttotheoriginalChapel inwhichMelbourne'sfirstMass wascelebratedin1839,ittypifiesandreflectsthespiritualand materialgrowthoftheDiocese duringthosehundredyears.
Yourownzealousefforts,VenerableBrother,havecontributed innosmallwaytotheflourishingconditionofwhichtheArcLdioceseofMelbournecanlie justlyproudontheoccasionot itsCentenary.Notcontentwitn merelyconsolidatingthementoriousachievementsofyour worthypredecessors,youhave labouredincessantlytocontinue thatprogressanddevelopment whichhadcharacterisedthe Archdiocesesinceitserection. Underyourauspicesanddueto youruntiringlabours,churches, schools,presbyteries,religious housesandconventsincreased andMultiplied.Nolongerdesendentonpriestsfromother countriesorfromotherseminaries,theDiocesenowhasitsown CorpusChristiCollegeforthe trainingofministersoftheGospelworthytotaketheplacearid followinthefootstepsofthe heroicmissionariesofthepioneer days. inadditiontostrengthening andexpandingtheprimaryan,i secondaryeducationalinstitutes oftheDiocese,yoursolicitude VenerableBrother,fortheproperCatholicformationofthe faithfulunderyourchargehas extendeditselfalsotothefieldof higherstudies.ConfidinginDiv-
ineProvidence,andrelyingonce moreonthegenerosityofyour people,youcourageouslyundertookthetaskofprovidingaCatholicUniversityeducationfor theyouthofbothsexes,andtodayNewmanCollegeandSaint Mary'sCollegestandasmonumentstoyourunquenchable zealandindefatigablelabour,

Aware,too,oftheimportance oftheCatholicPress,youis continuedandperfectedthe workbegunbyyourpredecessors,andhavemadeMelbourne anactivecentrefortheproductionanddistributionofCatholic literaturenotonlywithinthe boundariesoftheArchdioceseitself,butthroughouttheother ProvincesofthevastContinent aswell.
Verilythesehavebe dredyearsofproudachievement. Godhasblessedyourapostolicactivityandthatofyourpredecessorswitharichharvest,andthe ArchdioceseofMelbourneasit standsto-dayrepresentsawellnighmiraculousgrowthfromthe humblebeginningsofacentury ago.Notonlyhavethefaithfulmultipliednumerically,but

ToOvercomeUnrest.
BishopGrimahaw,ofPly- mouthwhoisrepresentingCa,dinalGriffinatthecelebrations, saidtheCatholicinEngland wasanEnglishman,andhespoke asanEnglishCatholictoAustralians.
Therewerethreethingsthata Governmentcoulddotoovercome unrest. Firstly,withinthe limitsofdistributivejustice,to securethewidestpossibledistributionandrecognitionofpissateproperty,becausewhena manhadsomepartofthisearth tocallhisownhewasnotlikely tobeledastraybyagitators whoseonlyclaimuponhimwas thattheyhadnothing.
Thesecondthingwastoenurethatthosewhohadthere ligiouseducationofyouthin theirhandswereleft,asfreeas possible.IftheGovernment paideverypennyfortheeducationoftheCatholicchildren theinvestmentwouldbeanextrfmelygoodone.InEngland, thankGod,theywerebeginning toseethelightofday.

WhattheEnglishpeoplewould wanthimtosaytoAustralians, hethought,wouldbetothank themforhavingstoodshotilde, toshoulderwiththepeopleof Britainduringtheterribletime ofwar.Itwasveryconsoling toknowtthattheyhadfriendsin theDominionswhowouldstand withthem.BothEnglandan' Australiaowedadebttothe UnitedStatesthatwasbeyond expressing.BritainsandAustralianswereusedtofighting hardandtakingheavyknocks, andultimatelygoingontovictory.

ItwouldappearthattheCatholicmembersarenotacquainted withCatholicsocialteaching,or thattheyareafraidtoincurthe displeasureoftheleadersofthe Party.
ItisalsotruethatweCatholicshavedonelittleinthematterofpropagatingCatholicsocialteachingandwhileanattemptwasmadesometimeago topromoteaCatholicSocial StudyGroupinPerth,itdiedas aresultofbloodlessnessthrough theapathyoftheCatholicmen.
