"G.W.,"Maylands,writes: "Couldyouenlightenmeif thereisanyplaceinGod's Wordstatingthatthesprinklingofwaterontheheadofa perstmissufficientforbaptism?"
A:Youmustnottrytoextract fromtheScripturesmorethan theyhavetogiveyouWelearn fromtheGospelsthatbaptismn necessaryforsalvationthatit istobecarriedoutbytheuse ofwaterandthattheceremony istobeperformed'inthename oftheFatherandoftheSonand oftheHolyGhost."FromSt. Paul'sepistleswefindoutmore aboutthesignificanceofbaptism andaboutthesymbolisminvolved.Butnoinspiredwritertells usanythingabouttheamountof watertobeused.TheScripturesdonotexplicitlysaythat sprinklingisenoughnordothey sayinanyway,explicitlyorimplicitly,thatitisnotenough. Ifyouweregoingtodecidethis matterfromtheScriptures alone,youmightpossiblybein somedoubt,although,asIshall showinaminute,baptismby sprinklingcanreallybeshown tocontainnothingcontraryto Scripturalrequirements.Butin amatterlikethis,themostreasonableandthesafestcourseis tofollowthetraditionoftheCatholicChurch.TheChurchhas receivedthechargeofadministeringtheSacramentsfromOur LordHimselfandthetradition thatremainsintheChurchas tothemethodstobeemployedis aperfectlyclearandreliable guide.AsIpointedout,traditionsanctionsthreeformsof baptism:immersion,infusion(or thepouringofwateronthe head),andaspersion(orthe sprinklingofwateronthehead).
Noristhetraditionaladministrationofbaptisminanyof thesethreeformsatvariance withOurLord'sinstructionsas containedintheGospels.Christ commandedHisApostlestogo forthandteachallnations,and tobaptisetheminthenameof theFather,andoftheSon,and oftheHolyGhost.Nowtheword "baptise"isaGreekwordwhich sometimesmeanstodipor plunge,butintheNewTestamenthasthemoregeneralsense of"wash."Itisused,forinstance,oftheceremonialwashingsoftheJews.Accordingly, whentheApostlesaregiventhe
commandtobaptise,itiscleat thatasymbolicwashingorablutionismeant.Thebodyistobe washedwithwaterwhilethesoul iswashedcleanwithgrace.The nextthingtodetermineisjust whatapplicationsofwatercan bedescribedasWashingorablutions.Totalimmersionobviouslyfulfilsallrequirements.Butis itnecessary?OurLordcould hardlyhavemeantthatthebedriddenandthedyingweretoun dergototalimmersion,andsutt these,too,requiredbaptismfor salvationiftheyhadnotpreviouslybeenbaptised.Moreover, commonsensetellsusthatwe canwashourselveswithouthavingabath.Apersonwhohas waterpouredoverhisheadcould bedescribedaswashedbythe water.Thatisthemethodused inbaptismbyinfusion.Wenow cometothequestionofsprinkling.Certainlyifafewdrops ofwaterweremerelysprinkled onthesurfaceofthehairofan adultperson,theremightbe somedoubtastowhetherthe ideaofanablutionwasverified. Butifthedropsofwaterare sprinkledliberallyontheheaditself-particularlyontheforehead inthecaseofadults-sothat theyrunortrickleoverthesurfaceoftheskinthenenoughhas beendonetofulfiltherequire-

l'oumustrememberthatthe internaleffectofasacrament doesnotdependupontheextent orthoroughnessofthephysical actionprescribed.Thecleansingfrontsinwhichbaptism bringsaboutisnotgreaterbecausealotofwaterisused,or becausemoreofthebodyis \slashed.Nomatterhowslight thephysicalwashing,orhow smalltheamountofwaterused, aslongasthereisarealablutionandthecorrectwordsare used,thesacramentisvalidand thesoulisfreedfromsin.
Inpracticethemethodof sprinklingwaterontheheadis notcommonlyusedintheCatholichChurchto-day.Theimportanceofbaptismissuchthatno risksaretakeninitsadministration.Afewminutedropsof watercarelesslysprinkledonthe headmightpossiblyfailtoproduceaphysicalablution, but therecanbenoquestionofthe ablutionwhenwaterisliberally pouredthreetimes, accordingto theprescriptionsoftheRoman Ritual, overtheheadorforehead ofthepersontobebaptised. Catholics, however, areina differentposition.Theyhold thatwhenChristgaveHisApos- tlespowertoforgivesins,He madeitobligatoryonallHis followerstosubmitallmortal sinstothoseApostlesortothe prieststowhomthepowerwas successivelycommunicated. I haveexplainedtwiceinfairlyrecenttimesthatneithertheApos- tlesnoranyoftheCatholic priestsdownthroughthecenturieshadanypowertoforgivesins intheirownname.Theyhave aministerialpowergiventhem byChrist.Thatmeansthat whensinsareforgiveninConfes, ion, itisGodwhoforgives, but itisGodoperatingthroughthe instrumentalityofapriest. No mancouldthusmakehimselfan instrumentofGodonhisown authority.Buthecanbemade suchbyChrist.
IhaverepeatedlyquotedOur Lord'swordsinthisconnection. Theyholdthatthispowerwas givenbyChristtoremainpernanentlyintheChurch,sincethe Churchistoremainuntilthe
consummationoftheworld,and Christistobewithit,givingit Hisauthorityallthattime.
Theyhold,moreover,thatwhen OurLordgaveHisApostlespowertoretainsins,Hedidnotnullifythatpowerbystillleavingit possibleformentoobtainforgivenessoftheirsinswithout anyreferencetothatsacramentalpower.Hencetheythemselvesknowthattheyareboundto accusethemselvesoftheirmortalsinsbeforeapriestproperly equippedwithjurisdiction.And theyknowthatwhentheirsins arethusforgiven,itisGodwho forgives,butGodwhohaschosen touseahumanagentdelegated byChristHimself.
