TheCatholicAustraliaMovementisperhapsuniqueamong themanyapostolicmovements intheCommonwealth.Itcalls noconventions,leviesnofees, publishesnocircularsorbulletins,haslittleorganisationand lesspublicity.Itisexclusively amovementforprayer-prayer fortheconversionofourcountry.
TheMovementisnowtwenty yearsold,ahumbleworkbegun anddirected,asfarashuman agencyisconcerned,byahandfulofseminarists,acommittee ofthreestudentsforthediocesanpriesthoodstudyingat CorpusChristiCollege,WeIrribee PurposeofC.A.M.
Naturallytheopportunities whichecclesiasticalstudents haveforanyactiveapostolate ordirectteachingoftheGospel areverylimited.Theircourse ofstudiesisnotonlylong,coveringaperiodofeightyears, butcrowdedwithanecessarily widerangeofsubjejcts.Nevertheless,asadirectresultof thedeepimpressionmadeupon thembytheInternationaland EucharisticCongressheldin Sydneyin1928,theCorpus Christi.studentsofthatyear ralliedtoacallmadebytheir Rector,VeryRev.AlbertPower, S.J.,toworkandprayforthe conversionofAustraliatothe trueFaith.lTowardstheclose ofthatyearageneralmeeting ofthestudentbodyofthecollege decidedtoseekpermissionto makeanorganisedefforttoget peopleprayingforthatintention.
AspecialPrayerfortheConversionofAustraliawascomposed byoneofthestudents,which hassincebeenindulgencedbythe HolySeeandofficiallyrecognisedin1937bytheFathersofthe FourthPlenaryCouncilofAustraliaandNewZealand,whorecommendeditsdailyrecitation.

AGrowingWork.
Withineighteenmonthsofthe launchingoftheMovementin 1928,some10,000leafletsofthe PrayerfortheConversionof Australiahadbeendistributed, andsomeofthestudentswere busywritingbriefinstructions onpointsofCatholicfaithand practicewhich,however,inspite ofthebestendeavoursofseveral generationsoftheirfellows, havenotyetbeenpublished. Howpoorweretheirfinancial resourcesisreflectedbythefollowingextractfromtheminutes oftheannualmeetingheldin 1931:"Itwasdecidedthatabox for'subscriptionsbeplacedatthe Collegenoticeboard,andthat thecommitteeshouldarrangefor printing,accordingtothe amountreecivedbysubscriptions."Theselimitedthenext editionoftheprayerto2,000 copies.However,throughthe generosityoftheclergyand ofthemanyschoolswhichhad becomenotonlycentresforthe dis'ributionofthisPrayerfor theConversionofAustralia,but inwhichitwasreciteddaily,the totalnumberofcopiesofthis prayerreached20,000bythebeginningof1937.Thisnumber wasalmostdoubledinthenext twoyears,duringwhichtimethe Prayerwasofficiallyrecognised
Now,in1948,the BishopsofAustralia aresofavourably disposedtowardsthe C.A.M.anditsaims, thatwefindthe prayerbeingsaidat Benedictioninalmosteverydiocese oftheland.
bytheHierarchyofAustralia andNewZealand,andincluded intheofficialCatechismissued undertheirauthority.
Overthelasttenyearsasuccessionofcommitteeshasbeen responsiblefortheprintingof theprayerleafletsinbatchesof nolessthan20,000copies,which haveallbeendistributedtothe Catholiccollegesandconventsof Australia.Theprayerhasalso beendistributedbyseminarists studyingatSt.Patrick'sCollegeManly,N.S.W.Thestudentsofformeryearsarenow priestsscatterednotonly throughoutVictoria,butinevery partoftheCommonwealth.
Duringthistime,too,notonly werethegreaternumberofall theCatholicschoolsoftheCommonwealthrecitingitdaily,but manyhadadoptedanotherpracticeoftheCatholicAustralia Movement-namely,theoffering ofHolyMassandCommunion monthly,onafixeddayforthe ConversionofAustralia.In In1940thisorganisationwasresponsibleforthepublicationof asecondleaflet,"IMustAlways Pray,"whichitwashopedmight helpmembersoftheCatholic Churchtoraisetheirheartsto GodinprayerThisparticular leaflethasbeenappreciatedby manypatientsinhospitalsvisitedbytheladiesoftheCatholic Women'sSocialGuild. Thegrantingofpermission fortherecitationofthePrayer fortheConversionofAustralia atBenedictionoftheBlessed SacramentinthedioceseofMelbournewasasourceofparticu- larsatisfactiontotheMovement in1942.
Now,in1948,theBishopsof AustraliaaresofavourablydisposedtowardstheC.A.M.and itsaims,thatwefindtheprayer besingsaidatBenedictioninalmosteverydioceseoftheland.

Oneofthemostpopularvisi torstoMelbournefortheChureh DiocesanCentenaryCelebrations nextmonthiscertaintobe FatherSydneyMacEwan,the world-famousScottishtenor, whowillattendaspersonalrepresentativeoftheArchbishop ofGlasgow(Dr.MacDonald), whosedoctorhasforbiddenhim totravelbecauseofill-health.
TenyearsagoFatherMacEwan,whoisknownabroadas "theScottishJohnMcCormack," forsookabrilliantcareeronthe concertplatformtoenterthe priesthood.Australiansfirst heardhischarmingvoicein193436,whenhetouredtheCommonwealthShortlyafterhis returntoScotland,andatthe heightofhissingingcareerhe surprisedeverybodybyannouncinghisintentiontoleavethe worldandbecomeapriest.He beganhisphilosophicalandtheologicalstudiesatScotsCollege, Rome,in1937,butwhenwar brokeouthewasforcedtoreturntohisnativeland.AtSt. Peter'sCollege,Bearden,Dumbartonshire,hecompletedhis courseofstudiesandwasordainedatGlasgowinJune,1944.

Thelittleflamewhichwaslit fromthefireoftheInternationalEucharisticCongressheld inSydney,nownearlytwenty yearsago,hasbeencarried, throughtheyears,intosometwo hundredsanctuariesbythe priestswhohavesincebeenordainedfromCorpusChristiCollege-allofthematonetimeactivemembersoftheCatholic AustraliaMovement,butithas notbecomeagreatlight,alight enlighteningallthepeopleof ourland.Maywenothopethat thisyear'sgreatcentenary gatheringinMelbournewillfan ittoabrighterflame.

FourteenhundredNuns,0eportedfromtheEasternZoneof GermanytoRussia,havebeen forcedintosuchhardphysical labouras'buildingbridgesand workinginthemines,according toareportoftheSwiss"Kipa" agency,whichquotesthesigned statementofareturnedGerman prisonerofWar.

WhenTitoimprisonedArchbishopStepinacandbeganhis warontheCatholicChurch,he mayhaveimaginedthathe couldsucceedwhereHitlerhad failed,andcouldimposeatotalitariansecularauthorityonhis Catholicsubjects.Followingthe Nazitechnique,Titodiscovered secretwirelesssetsinmythical monasteries,foundunknown monksguiltyofcontactingthe outsideworld,provokedviolence inwhichclericswereslaughteredandthosewhosurvived,impriosnedfor,beingimplicatedin rioting.Finally,Titorepeated theultimateHitlermove.He triedtostartanationalChurch.
OnDecember1hestartedinBelgrade,a'UnionofPeople's PriestsinthePeople'sRepublic fYugoslavvia."Thisorganisation'sexistenceissupposedto indicatethatthereisnopersecutioninYugoslavia.UnfortunatelyforTito,thegrowinglist ofmartyrsandimprisonedpoints otherwise.
WhatItWanted.
EquallyunfortunateforTito's purposeisthefactthattheonly Catholicnameconnectedwith thenewgroupof"People's Priests"isthatofFatherMetou Mikusch,aSloveneex-priest whowassuspendedyearsago fromthedioceseofLjubljana. Theneworganisationadopted theresolution:"UndertheleadershipofMarshallTito,the greatestsonofourcountry,the policyofbrotherhoodandconcordhashadsuchhappyeffects fortheYugoslavpeoplethatnow alsotheChurch,inunionwith thepeople,mustparticipatein thestrengtheningofthisbrotherhoodandconcordinorderto maintaintheresultsofthegreat struggle."Themeetingalso wanted revisionofecclesiasticallaws."Itwanted"anelectoralandademocraticConstitutioninourHierarchy.ThepresentChurchConstitution,and theotherlawswhichderivefrom itdonotgiveusanyinitiative, nordotheyenableustoorganiseourselves. itisgenerallyconcededthat FatherClunewasamongthe greatRedemptorists.Higsuccessinwinningmenbacktothe practiceoftheirreligionwas phenomenal.Whentheydidnot cometohearhispreach,,he soughtthemoutintheirown homes.Onlythosewhodoparochialvisitationknowhowtrying, disappointing,andhumiliatne thisstandingondoorstepscanbe. NothingdauntedFatherClune hisroundsofvisitationduringa mission.Hewasofteninsulted, thefrontdoorslammedonhis face,buthereturnedagainand againformore,untilhispatience wasblessedwithsuccess.DuringMissionsatKalgoorlieand Boulder,heoftenawaitedhis menatthegateoftheshaft, sometimeshewentdownbelow wherethemenweredrilling.

Butonemusthaveseenhimin thepulpittoabsorbfullythe musicofthatgoldenvoice.He hadamobilefacethatquicklyre- spondedtoemotionsandmirroredthespiritwithin.Hisblue eyescouldflashwithfireorgrow dimwiththemistofsorrow.His gestureswerefluid,madegener- allywithaneloquentrightband. Theeyescannotrecapturehis magnificentoratory.Whata pityhewasnotpersuadedto makerecordsofhisimportant sermons!Thenwecouldall tastethewineofhisspeech,and enjoythemusichescatteredover thespokenword.
HISGIFTOFTONGUES.
Hisgiftoftongueswasa speakingvoiceofvariedcadences andinflectionsoverwhichheexercisedamaster'sskill.The biographerofthelateJohnMcCormack,theIrishtenor,said thathisvoice,"keepingallthe weatherofhisnativeskies,achievedthebrightnessandringof thebestItalianvoiceswithnone oftheirharshness.Itwellsup withthedarkfulnessofaflooded river,leapingintosunlight, gleamingwithalmostunbearable brilliance,thenleavingalast softnotetofloathighintheair, likethecolouredsprayfroma waterfall."
Dr.ClunewasanotherIrish boywhotookhisbroguewith himtotheendofhislife.When stronglymoved,avolumeof soundcamerollingfromhis lungs,tingedwithanIrishbroguethatlentpersonahtytohis address.Hishighernoteshada silverytimbreripplingthrough themthatenabledhimtopietce themostdistantcornerofa church.Thosehighnotesseemedtovibratelikethenotefrom aperfectlycastbell,carryingits messagetothedistantcornersof thechurch.Dr.Clunecouldbe easilyheard,everywordclear cut,distinct,inthenewSt Mary'sCathedral,Perth,where preachersto-daymustleanon loudspeakers.
HOWDIDHEPREPAREHIS SERMONS?
Ioftenaskedhimhowhepreparedhissermons.Hisreply wasalwaysthesame,eitherhe devotedtoitspreparationabsoluteconcentration,orherelied ontheinspirationofthemoment,withoutanypreparationat all.Hewassuchagoodextemporespeaker,especiallyon socialoccasions,thatmanyheld thathewasathisbestwhenhe hadtoborrowsuddenlyfromthe richstoreofhisacquirements withoutnotice.

Everybodywouldsaythataalai' whotriedthustoisolatethe pleasureofeatingfromthenaturalfunctionsandprocessesof nutritionwouldbedoingsomethingdisgustingandbestial.It wouldbemoreaccuratetosay thathewasdoingsomethingunreasonable,somethingopposedto hisnature,andthusopposedalso totheNaturalLaw.Inthe samewaywerightlyrecoilwhen wereadinsomeoftheLatin writersofthefirstcenturyA.D. thatthedecadentRomansof thatperiodusedemeticsattheir banquetsinordertodisgorge themselvesoffoodandmakeit possibletobegineatingallover again.Insteadofthepleasure oeingsubordinatedtotheprocesseswhichitwasmeantto erve,thoseprocessesweredisturbedorevennullifiedforthe sakeofthepleasure.

ThismorningIvisitedSt.Andrew'sCatholicCathedral,onthe oppositesideoftheriver.Its sizewasnotoverimpressive whenthefactisconsideredthat Glasgowisthesecondcityofthe Empire.Visitedafewmore partsofthecity,andafterlunch Idebatedwhethertogohiking outtoLochLomond.Isoonhad ananswer.The"Scotch"mist thathadhoveredoverthecity duringthemorninghadnowbecomemoredense,andvisibility wasreducedtoabouttwoor threehundredyards.SoIspent mostoftheafternoonwandering alongthebanksoftheClydeand visitingseveralofthehuge shipyards.To-day'spapermentionedthat"thetotaltonnage nowunderconstructioninScottishshipyardsexceedsthecombinedtotalsoftheUnitedStates, Belgium,Denmark,Norwayand Sweden.ThetonnogeunderconstructioninScotlandattheend ofSeptemberwas799,400."They weremostinteresting.Onthe returnjourneytothecityImade abriefstoptoinspectGlasgow, University,animposingbuilding, andcertainlythemoststrikingI haveseeninthishugecity.

FirstwefollowedtheClydeto Dumbarton,afterwehadabrief stopatJohnBrown'sShipyards atClydebanktohavealookat thenew40,000-tonCunardliner, "Caronia,"whichwillbelaunchedbyPrincessElizabethonthe 30th.ofthismonth,andsoon afterpassedthroughthepicturesquevillageofBalloch,on theedgeofLochLomond.It wasnotadaywhenthesun shinesbrightonLochLomond; infactitwasdull,mistyand cold,andyetthemist,ifanything,increasedtheethereal lovelinessoftheloch.Wemust havepassedhundredsofhikers andcyclistsalongthenarrow windinglochsideroad Ashort runoverlandfromTarbet broughtustotheshoresofLoch

Twicethisweek,aUniversity audiencehasbeentoldbyprom- inentmenofthiscity"tostep outandtakealead,"tolettheir fellow-citizensofAustraliahave thebenefitoftheirtrainingand matureminds.Noble,enthusias,icwordsaddressedtoanaudiencethatshouldbeexpectedto realisetheirvalueandimport. Ourfaith,notmerelyinanacademicsense,normerelyasa labelbywhichwearedistinguishedasonespecialbrandof ChurchgoersItmeansnotonly loyaltytoadogmaticsystem, butloyaltyalsotoallthemoral principleswhichthatsystemimpliesItissomething,then, whichinfluencesourlivessothat wenotonlyunfurlthebanners ofbelief,butwefightthebattle ofChristinourownlivesfirst, sothatwemayhavethegrace andthecouragetosticktoour principlesandtopreachthemby curexampleinpublic.Ifwe aretotaketheplaceweare meanttotakeinpubliclife,if wearetowieldtheonlyinfluence worthwhile,ourlives,inwhateverspheretheyarecast,must reflectthecharityandgenerosityofChrist.Thatisthefeaturewhichislackinginthe leadershipoftheworldto-day. Sir,-Ithasfrequentlybeen statedthatwegettheGovernmentwedeserve;atanyratewe gettheGovernmentthepeople voteforunderourpresentsystemofelectingmembersofParliament.
Unlessweeffectachangeinour electoralsystemtoenablethe voiceofthepeopletobeclearly andfairlyexpressed,wemustexpectanomalies,andifsomething isnotdonequickly,thenation maybeledintoatragedy.In 1931oneandahalfmillionelec-' torsputintotheFederalSenate everymember-33innumberyetoneandaquartermillion electorshadnorepresentationat all!In1934theLyonsGovernmentgotinwithalargemajorityofseats,butthetotalvotes castagainsttheLyons'Governmentwasabout70,000.Asystemthatgivessuchfantasticresults,andleavesagreatmany peopledisfranchised,islong overdueforachange.
Preferentialvoting,andthe firstpastthepostsystemfora generalelectionwillnotgiveus proportionalrepresentation,which shouldbetheaimofanycountry. Thereisnoreasonwhyalarge numberofelectorsshouldbeleft merelyasspectatorsinthisgame ofpolitics,anddeprivedofasay intheGovernmentofacountry. Indevisingourelectoralsystem, thefollowingprinciplesshouldbe takenintoconsideration:-
1.Everyeffortshouldhemade toenableanybodywhowishes torecordavote.Itneednot necessarilybeacompulsoryvote' 2.Apartyshouldbeentitled
toberepresentedinproportionto thevotescastinfavourofthat party,with,ofcourse,astated numberofvotesfortheelection ofonemember.Ifinsufficient votesarepolledtoelectone member,thenthevotescanbe apportionedequallyamongstthe otherparties.Theelectorsin thiscasemaynotgettherepresentationtheydesire,butatany ratewemusthavesomebasison whichtoworkouttheproportion.
Ifthereare75membersof Parliament,andsay4,000,000 electorsontheroll,theproportionwouldbeonememberto,say, 53,000electors.Afterall,itis qualitywewant,andnotquantity.

TheFantasiainCisanoble work,conceivedongrandlines, fullofcontrastsofboldnessand vigouragainsttendernessand dreaminess.nchumannisnearlyalwaysautobiographicalinhis largerworks,andtheyalldisplayaseriousnessofpurposeand asenseofresponsibilitywhich wttssocharacteristicoftheman Schumann.Inthemusicaljournalheconductedhedeclaredbitterwaronallthosewhoregardedmusicasmereentertainment, asalsouponthosewhoprovided thefacileandemptybrilliance ofmerely"ear-tickling"music. Stillfascinated,Bobfollowed DomSalvadobacktowherethe othermissionarieswerewaitingwithateamofbullocksanda dray.TheygaveBobbreadand -ugar,andpersuadedhimto staythenightwiththem.
AllthatnightBoblayawake listeningtothesnoresofthe weary"whitefellas"andwondering...
Nextmorning,scare had thebirdsbeguntheirmorni.g song,..,ndthesunpeepedthrough theta'lurns,whenthemis sionarieswerestirring.
Bobwatchedwhiletheyunloadedthebullockdrayandbegantosetitupwithsuchmysteriousthings-asmallcross first,liketheoneBobhadplayedwith,onlytherewasafigure onit.Thentheyspreadawhite clothoverthebackofthedray. DomSalvadoputonaloosegar- mentthatdazzledBobwithits brightness.
AnditwasthenthatBobwas firstcalledBob-
knew,thebirdsbrokeintoaloud chorus.
Ofcourse,youknowwhathad happened.ThefirstMasshad beensaidinthatwildpartof theAustralianbush.Atlast OurLordhadcomethere:tothe treesandflowers,tothekangaroosthathoppedthroughthe scrub,thelizardsandgrubsthat squirmedonthedarkearth,to thebirdsthatsangsohappilyandtoBob.
Bobwasasquicktolearnall thatashehadbeenaboutother things;hesoonbecameaCatholic.Andthenhedidhavea FirstCommunionDay.Hewas sohappythathetoldallthe otherblacks,andbroughtthem tothemissionariestolearn aboutOurLord.
Rightatthespotwherehe hadmetBobonthatexciting morning,DomSalvadosetupa misionstation,andthoughboth BobandDomSalvadodieda longtimeago,itisstillthere.It iscalledNewNorcianow,and isabigwonderfulmission,with alovelychurch,amonastery, schools,priests,brothers,and nuns.

Shescreamedloudly,landher Irishterriercametearingalong thepassagetoherhelp.Before youcouldcountfivehehadthe snakebythebackoftheneck. Whenthesnakedroppedlifeless tothefloorhisheadwasnearly off.Doggiesoonafterwasenjoyingthebestbreakfasthehad everhad.
Thisstoryisalsoworthreading.Jimmystayedathomeone afternoon.Mumwasn'tfeeling verywell.Whileshewasresting,Jimmy,ontiptoe,cameto askifshewouldlikeacupof tea."Yes,dear,butI'mafraid there'snomilk."Notlongafter Jimmybroughtinacupoftea whichMumenjoyed."But wheredidyougetthemilk?" sheasked."Ifoundsomein thecat'ssaucer."
