ThecaseofCristinoGarcia servedasthefocalpointforone oftheliveliestandmostscurrilouscampaignsagainstSpainto date.Thecaseitselfissoincrediblethatonlythemostexact presentationofthefactswilldemonstrateittobeoneofthe majorhoaxesperpetratedoninnocentreaderstheworldover.
Theopeningchapterinthis dramatookplaceinJanuary, theanti-Spanishcampaign.This1946whenthePanamaniandelereactionofcommonsenseandgatepresentedtheSpanishqueserenityhasnotextended,un-tionbeforetheUnitedNationsin London.Thiswasfollowedalmostatoncebytheresolutionof theFrenchConstituentAssemblytorequestthattheFrench Governmentbreakrelationswith Spain.Thesetwoeventsare symptomaticofwhatwastofollow.Francebecame,during themonthsthatfollowed,the nerve-centreoftheanti-Spanish effort.

TownHiscausebecamethe causeoflibertyandfreedomfor literallyhundredsofnewspapers, meetingsandprotestgroups. ThenameofGarciawasheraldedindozensofcountriesasa mattyrtothecauseofhuman dignityandevidenceoftheass tardytacticsoftheFranco regimeinhoundingtotheir deathvaliantdeefndersofdemocracy.Butfirstofall,the :toryofCristinoGarcia-thatis tosay,therealstory.
CristinoGarcia,inJulyof 1936,wasshovellingcoalona merchantshipwhicharrivedat theSpanishportofAvilesafew daysafterthenationalistuprisingofJuly18. Onlanding,he joinedtherepublicanforcesin Asturiasandrosetotherankof sergeantWhenthenorthern frontcollopsed,hefledto Franceandlaterre-entered SpaintojointheRepublicans, fleeingthesecondtimewhen CataloniafellbeforethevictoriousarmiesofGeneralFranco.In 1943henameappearsagainas oneoftheleadersofasmallresistancegroupagainsttheGermansinFrance. WiththeliberationorFrance, Garciabecamesomethingofa leaderamongtheSpanishexiles intheSouthofFrancecloseto theSpanishfrontier.Asa memberofoneoftheclandestine groupsoperatingalongtheborder,heenteredSpainillicitlyin April,1945.Fromthispoint onhi,criminalcareerbecomes muchclearer.Whateverhis politicalideasmayhavebeen, itisperfectlyobviousthatGarciawasnothinglessthanabanditoragangsteroncehewas onSpanishsoil. Therecordofhiscrimes soundslikesomethingoutofthe moremelancholypagesofgang historyintheUnitedStatesat itsworst.Hisfirstregistered crimewasthemurderofthe ownerofabarinCanillejas,near MadridHekilledthisparticu- larvictimpurelyforthepurpose ofrobbery.On13th.June, 1945,inthetownofPegeurinos, heshotandkilledamemberof thepolicewhohaddemandedhis papers.Threedayslaterhe attackedapolicestationand killedtwomoremembersofthe CivilGuard.On6to.Septem- ber,whiletwoothermembersof hisbandheldhimprisoner,Gar- ciamurderedoneGabrielLeon Trillo.ThismanwasanexCommunistwhohadrefusedto haveanytruckwithGarciaor hisoutfit.On14th.Septem- ber,Garciaattackedarailway stationnearMadridandgot waywith21,000pesetas;on9th. ThedebateintheHouseofRepresentativesonthe censuremotionagainsttheGovernmentonthesubjectof Communismwasfeeblebeyondcompare,atleastonthe partofthePrimeMinister.Theattitudeofunrealismrevealedinhisutteranceswasallthemorestartlingforthe contrastoftheforthrightcourageoftheLabourPremier ofQueensland.Mr.Menziessummedupveryaptlywhat musthaveoccurredtoagreatmanypeopleonreadingthe debate:"Mr.Hanlonhasshownthedifferencebetween backbonesinQueenslandandwishbonesinCanberra."It maybeadebatablequestionastowhatisthebestmethod ofmeetingtheRedmenace;itmaybeargued,asMr. Chifleydid,thatminoritymovementsgrowstrongerpy repressiveactionbutthereisnogroundfordoingpreciselynothingwhatever.ThePrimeMinister'sconceptionofthedutyoftheFederalGovernmentinthematter :sthenarrowoneofsafeguardingthemilitarysecurityof thecountry.Asfortheindustrialstrangleholdwhichthe Communistsareabletomaintainontheeconomicvitality cfAustralia,Mr.ChifleyiscontentthattheUnionsshould CDCthatupintheirownwayintheirowngoodtime.
Againstthemountingwaveofpopularopinion,sucha folded-armspolicywillnotlongavail.Itisadmittedly ..-,oundstatesmanshipinnormaltimestovermittheUnions toconducttheirownaffairs.Itisanunalienableright houndupwiththenaturalrightofassociation.But timesarenotnormal;indeedtimeistheessenceofthe socialcontractto-day.TheFederalGovernmentwould .:ertainlybejustifiedinassistingtheUnionsintheircleanupbyincorporatingthesecretballotasanintegraland necessaryprocedureinindustriallawforthemaintenance offreeelectionsandforthedecisionofmajorfactorsundeterredbythreats.WhatconsolationisittothecitizensofthiscountrytohavetheassurancesthatCommunistswillnotspyontherocketrangewhentheyarefree atanytickoftheclocktostarvethepopulationsofcities byagensaltransportstrike,todisruptcommunications. andingeneraltodefythelawswhichbindothercitizens? Mr.Chifleywasguiltyofgrossexaggerationwhenhe tpokeof"brutalrepressiveaction,"fornobodyhadproposedanysuchthing.Butsomethingmustbedone,and donequickly,andnofalsetheoryoffreedommustbeper- mittedtostandintheway.
BothMr.Chifleyand1)r.Evattbasedtheiropposition toabanontheirreluctancetodepriveminoritiesofthe rightofexpression.Itwillbeaswelltoclearupthis questionoffreedomonceforall.Itissurelyindisputable thatacitizenisfreewithinthelaw-homoliberlegalis -onlysolongasheacceptsthelawandtriesreasonably tokeepwithinthelaw.Nooneprotestsagainstthe Staterestrictingthefreedomofmovementofburglarsand ;hugs.TheCommunistpositionprovidesaperfectparallel.TheCommunistisnotamemberofanormalpoliticalparty.Hehasnoregardwhateverforthepolitical machineryofdemocracy,afactwhichisprovedbythe Partyinemployingthehustingsmerelyasasoundinghoardforpropaganda.Theyhaveputthemselves,by theirtheoriesandactions,outsidethepale.Becausethey willnotsccepttheircivicresponsibilities,theyhaveforfeitedtheirrightsandprivilegesascitizens.Theyare voluntaryoutcasts,andshouldhetreatedassuch.Mr. Chifleyishopelesslyoutof(latewhenheattemptstoexplaintheriseofCommunisminourdayasthenaturalrehoundofthesocialpendulum.Ithasgotwhereitisby treachery,trickery,andfraud.Anditwillgothelimit inAustraliaunlessthepoliticiansstopworryingabout :heirmiserableseatsandtheelectoralbarometer.

WORLDREMADE.
Whenthesoldierswhonailed ChristtotheCrossreturnedto theirbarracksthatnightand washedthebloodfromtheir hands,theywereconsciousof havingdonejustanotherjob. JustonemoreJewishexecution. Justasordidpartoftheday's drabroutine.Theydidnotknows' thattheyhadchangedthecourse ofthehistoryoftheworld.They didnotknowthattheyhad washedtheworldbeingmade overagain.TheCrossforthem wasmerelytheendofoneman's
career.Theydidnotknowthat itwastheopeningofthemighty portalswhichconcealedthe"hid battlementsofeternity."They hadsplithistoryintwo,andthey didnotknow'it.
DYNAMOOFPOWER.
TheCrossofChristwasadynamoofpowerwhichchanged thewholehistoryoftheworld. Naymore.itsavedtheworldfor history.Haditnotbeenfor theCross,civilisationwouldhave perished,andbarbarismwould havedescendedlikeanuglypall overallcivilisationandallculture.
WhenPontiusPilateboasted fromhisjudgmentseat,"Ihave powertocondemnthee"hewas vauntingthemightandpowerof Rome.Romeseemedtobeat theapogeeofitspower.Vast territorieshadbeenconquered, andwereheldinsubjection.Romanmilitarypowerwasheldin healthyrespectthroughoutthe thenknownworld,andtheclatterofmarchingbootsuponthe roughstonesofRomanroads couldsendshiversoffeardown thespinesofsubjugatedprovinces. Romeseemedtobeatthe heightofitspower.Butatthe verymomentwhenPilateboastedofthatpower,itwasrotten tothecore,andthefoundations werealreadycrumbling. GODANDHISTORY.
Therearethosewhosaythat historyisshapedandcontrolled byenomomics,orbypsycho,ossy, orgeography,or-moststupidof all-bychance.Theyareall, ofcourse,wrong.Historyis shapedbytheCrossofJesus Christ.Allhistoryisnothing elsethantheunfoldingintime ofGod'seternalplansandesigns,togetherwiththestoryof man'sacceptanceorrejeationof thoseplans.Andtheveryheart andcentreofthoseplansisthe Cross.Alltimebefor,theCross wasbuttherhythmic,res^endo ofexpectancy;al'timesincethe Crosshasbeenthepageantof fulfilment.TheCrossisthesuprememomentinthecloc;softhe universe.Itisthehourof twelve,whenbothhandsoftime -bothbeforeandafterChristmeetandareunited,pointingupwardtotheskies.TheCrossis thepivotalpointofhistory.

foughtback.Christianblood wasspilled.Andwhereverit purpledtheground,therethe Crosstookrootandgrew.Chrisdoncommunitieswerebornin neverythroesofpersecution. Sothefightgrewmorevicious ..ridmoresavage.Butallthe wholetheEmpireoftheCross wasgrowing.
Thefinalorgiesofbestialhate whichwereunleashedagainstthe Crosswerethemadthrashings ofthedeathstruggleoftheEmpire.Romewasdrenchedwith Christianblood,andtheblood haptiseiltheEmpire.Finally Constantineyielded.Whether hisvisionoftheCrossinthesky betrunorlegendmattersnot. Whatdoesmatteristhatthe Crosshadfinallytriumphed.And inthewaythatitalwaystriumphs-byapparentfailure.The Romaneaglesweretakenfrom theimperialstandardsandin theirplacetheCrosswasset, TheRomanShepherdofthe

WESTERNCULTURE.
Andsoourworldwasbuilt. ITEADCRUCEM.
Therestillremainsoneother greatsystemofthoughtandone othermightynationwhichrepudiatesallthattheCrossteaches. TheymaybanishtheCrossfora time,andbytheirrejectionofit theymaybringgreatsorrowinto theheartsofmillions.Butthe ultimatevictoryoftheCrossis inevitable. Centurieshence, whenthenamesofMarxand LeninandStalinbecomenebulous inforgottenhistory,theCross willstillstandtriumphantand invincible.ItisthePowerof God.
poorandignorantreceivedthe Gospel.Theywerenotthe importantpeople.Indeed,they werewhatRomeconsideredthe riffraff.
LIFE'SMEANING.
Thesefewunimportant,humblefolkbegantogrow.Word gotroundquickly,andmoreand morecametothelittleassemblies.Forthedowntrodden,the persecuted,thewretchedlypoor, thepreachingoftheCrosswas theverybreathoflife.How theirsoulshungeredforthissublimetruth!Andhowitchanged thebitternessoftheirlives!This wasnorevoltingcrumbofcomfortofsocialbetterment.Not acrustthrowntoalleviatetheir gnawinghunger.Itwasan ointmentfortheirgnawing hearts.Theirfrustration,their hopelessness,theiragonyofsoul -allthesehadameaningnow. Lifewasworththeliving.It Wasevenmoreworththedying. TheCrosswasconqueringthem. Itwouldnotbelongbefort, wouldconquerallRomeaswell. Butnotyet!Therewereno modern"keytosuccess"methods.TheCrossmeansalways acrucifixion.Itconqueredby thepathofsorrow.
Thelittletrickleofconverts grewintoastream.Theseneophytescarriedthewonderful storythroughallthehoneycomb structureofRomanlife.The slavestoldtheirfellowslaves. Soldierswhohadbeenwontothe Crosstoldtheirfellowlegionaries.Noblemenandpatricians weregraduallyaffected.They, too,embracedtheCross.Even thehouseholdofCaesarwas reached,almostwithoutthe knowledgeofofficialRome.The CrossWaspenetratingRoman life,shoringupthecrumbling foundationsoftheEmpire.
PERSECUTION.
Finally,theEmpirecouldignoretheCrossnolonger.Itwas conqueringCaesar,andCaesar
Cross,Peter'ssuccessor,Pope Melchiades,wasgivenaBasilica wherethedramaoftheCross mightbeendlesslyre-enacted, andSt.JohnLateranbecamethe MotherChurchoftheCross.It willsalongtimefromPilateto Constantine,butRomenever washedthatBloodfromits hands.Itwasreborninthat Blood.
EUROPEANDFAITH.
TheEmpireabdicated.Con5tantinebuilthisnewcity,Constantinople,and,forthemost part,heleftRometothevicegerentoftheCross.Itwasthe ShepherdoftheCrosswhowent forth,crossinhand,tostemthe savagefloodthatthreatenedto engulfthebastionsofcivilisation.LeowentouttomeetAttila,andAttilaturnedback.
Therewasmoretothatscene thanthemeetingoftwomen. StillthetriumphoftheCross wenton.Theslumberingembersoflearningandculture whichtheChurchhadsalvaged fromtheruinsofRomewere fannedintobrilliantdames.Monasterieswerebuiltandschools, shrinesoflearningwhichpeopledeventhewildernesswith scholarsandsaints. Missionarieswentforth.Up theRhonetheysailed,andupthe Seine.TheRhineandthe Danubewerenavigatedbythe Cross.Andthenacrossthe seas.Irelandreceivedthe Faith,andEnglandEvenfaroffDenmarkandNorwayand IcelandknewtheCross.How littlePilatedreamedthatday whenheorderedtheCrosslaid
InPaganRome,thewords, "Iteadcruecm"-"tothecross" wereahorriblecondemnationto thatwhichwasworsethandeath. Sir,-FrancisGilbertisavery disappointedman,asthereaction tohisattackonMr.Burkeisdifferenttowhatheexpected.Tom BurkeiswellknowntoCatholics intheLabourParty,andIcan saywithoutfearofcontradictionthateveryCatholicinthe LabourMovementisproudtobe associatedwithhim,andweare stillproudtobeassociatedwith Tomafterreadingthesneersof FrancisGilbert.
FrancisGilbert,inhislatest reply,hasmissedthepointcompletelyinreferencetoMgr.Devine.Thepointisthatthe 'sneering"atMgr.Devinewas intendedforMr.Burke,andwhen theerrorwaspointedoutto FrancisGilbert,Iexpectedthat hewouldnotonlyacknowledgeit outwouldalsoapologise;but,instead,hetriedtowriggleoutof it.Theparagraphintheletter whichFrancisGilbertreferred toas"platitudesandhalftruths,"wasinfactanextract fromanarticlewrittenbyMgr. Devine,butFrancisGilbertbelievedatthetimethattheparagraphwaspartofMr.Burke's letter. Isuggestthatitisnot toolateyettoadmitthatamistakewasmade",andthenwe couldhaveanintelligentdiscussiononBanking.
FrancisGilbertiscarefulto pointouttoreadersthatthe viewsofMr.BurkeandMgr.Devineareminorityviews.Ifthis gentlemanifoftheopinionthat, becausehecancommandunlimit edspacein"TheRecord,"herepresentsthemajorityview,I wouldliketoinformhimthathe doesnotrepresenttheviewsof Catholicworkers.
FrancisGilbert'sreferenceto theBankinglegislationasa "confidencetrick"isnotfaitto theLabourParty,whichisalwkayspreparedtogointothe politicalwildernessratherthan sacrificeanyoftheprinciplesfor whichitstands.NationalisationofBankinghasbeenhigh uponLabour'splatformaslong asIcanremember,anditisthe firsttimein20yearsthataLabourGovernmenthashadtheopportunitytogiveeffecttoit.
Thosewhoareopposedtothe BankBillarealsothosewhoare veryworriedaboutthespreadof Communism,butthesepeople whorepresenttheextremeright arejustasgreatamenaceto Australiato-dayastheCommunists,becausetheybring abouttheconditionswhereCommunismspreadslikeabushfire. Infactitwasthesepeoplewho sowedtheseedsofCommunism inthiscountryduringthedepressionyears,andwearenow garneringarichharvest.
Inmyopinion,thenissueis veryclear.Thepowerswhich themightyBanksonceheldare nowintheprocessofbeing transferredtotheelectedrepresentativesofthepeople.NaturallytheBanksdon'tlikeit,FrancisGilbertdoesnotlikeit,and, furthermore,hecan'ttakeit.Yours.etc., JACKMcALOON.

On21st.FebruarytheSpanish that executionsofGarciaandhisfellowcriminalshadtakenplace. TheFrenchpress,almostwithoutexception,printedthenotice withnoenumerationofthe crimesforwhichtheyhadbeen condemned.
On24th.Februarythefrench PostalFederationofPostalEmployeesdecreedthatfromnoon of25th.February.allmail,telephonicandtelegraphiccommunicationwithSpainwouldbesuspended.Thisaction,letitbe noted,wasdecidedupon.bypostmen,postofficeclerks,andthe like-notbytheFrenchGovernment.Theagitationnowbegan toreachitsclimax."LaPasionaria"senttelegramstoBidault,Bevil)sadByrnesdern.int;ingtoknowwhatwasgoingto bedonetopreventfurthermurdersinSpain.TheParispaper, "Aurore,"publisheditemsregardingstreetdemonstrationsin RiodeJaneiro,Brazil,aprotest tothePresidentofCubaagatheringofFriendsoftheSpanish RepublicinLondon.ThevarioustradeunionsofFrancemet todecidewhatactionagainst Spainshouldbetaken,andinformedtheFrenchGovernment thatrailandshipcommunication shouldbecutoffbetweenSpain andothercountries.Bidautt triedtostaveoffthedecision,but on1st.March"CeSoir"reported thattheFrenchGovernmentwas committedtotheclosingofthe Spanishfrontier.Thatvery dayDuclosaddressedamass meetingatwhichhestated:"It isnecessarytogobeyondthis. SomeFrenchpaperscalledattentiontothestupidityofthis pre-conceivedcampaignand opinedthatitwashightimethe Frenchpaidmoreattentionto theirdomesticdifficultiesandless totheinternalaffairsofaneighbouringState.Asusualthe Communistpressroundedonthis withshoutsof"collaborationist" and"Hitleriteagent."
thework.InNewYork,Chile, BuenosAires,Brizil,reportsof "LaPasionarias"appealwere given,andnotinfrequentlythe campaignwasusedtoattack local Powerspoliticalfigures,orthebig forcontinuingrelations withtheodiousFrancoGovernmentLabourorganisationsin Holland,Switzerland,andBritaindidtheirpartincondemningtheexecutionsorrefusingto loadships,etc,forSpain.Behind theironcurtainallwasnotsilent.BulgariaandHungarysent theirquotaofprotestsagainst the"undemocratic"methodsallowedtocontinueinSpain-not mentioningthemethodsbywhich theirowncountrieswerebeing governed.
TheSpanishGovernment,which uptothistimehadshownunheard-ofpatienceinthefaceof somanygratuitousattacks,repliedwithacalmstatementof thefactsandcalledtheFrench Government'sattentiontothe numerouswaysinwhichSpain hadcollaboratedduringthe criticalwaryears.TheFrench press,withtheexceptionof"Le Monde,"refusedtopublishthis text.
Whatwerethebasiccauses thatledtheFrenchtotakethis extravagantandsillyposition againstaneighbourState,which hasnotrrnd'.m:edintheleast-he resultsanticipated? Thefirst reasonwastheinfluenceofthe CommunistPartyintheFrench Government,thesecondwasthe intransigentattitudeofthe Frenchtradeunions.
Theclosingofthefrontier provedacompleteboomerang. Spainsufferednotatall.France, indireneedofimports,suffered verygreatly.Sincethattime

WhenamannamedCallesbecamePresidentofMexicodreadfulpersecutionwaswagedagainsttheCatholics.Youwillhave seenpicturesofMexicanchurchesthrongedwithpeopleand youwillknowhowmuchthe MexicanCatholicslovetheBlessedSacrament.Soyoucanimaginehowheartbrokentheywere whenitwasremovedfromall tabernacles.Ithinktheywould haveshrivelledupanddiedof lonelinessifFatherProhadn't beentheretohelpthem.
FatherProsetup"EucharisticStations"whereattherisk ofhislifehesaidMassandgave HolyCommunion.TheEucharisticStationwouldbeinabig housebelongingtoagoodCatholic.Thechildrenfromthat housewouldgotoalltheCatholicneighbourswithmysterious messagestellingthemwhattime FatherProwouldbethere.
Ofcourseitallhadtobedone veryquietly,andtheyhadto becarefulnottoarriveallat theonetimeandarousesuspicion.Twolittleboysmight runoutofahouseasthough onewerechasingtheother. They'dtearupthestreetand roundthecorner-intotiebig house.Perhapsanoldlady wouldwanderaloof;lookinginat allthegardens,andyou'dthink shewasjustonamorningstroll. Whenshecametothebighouse she'dslipin. Naturally FatherProhadtobethemost carefulofall,and,asyoucan guess,hehadmanyhair-raising adventures.
OnebeautifulMexicanmorningwhenthelakesweregrey intheearlylightandtheperfumefromthetuberrosesinthe gardenswassofragrantthat youalmostforgotthesadnessof Mexico.FatherProsetoutona 'bigday'sworkforsoulsHe
wasdisguisedasamotormechanic,wearingbaggytrousers, shirtsleevesrolledup,anda peakedcappulleddownoverone eyeHecarriedakitbagand helookedverygrumpy,as thoughhedidn'tlikebeingcalledoutsoearlyinthedayto mendacarHeappearedtobe lookingstraightahead,but,of course,hewaslettinghiseyes gorightandleft,andgiving quickbackwardglancesatall cornerstomakesurethepolice werenotfollowinghim.
OncearrivedattheEucharisticStation,hechanged,not intopriest'svestments,butinto anordinarygreysuit.Hewas asgayasever,makingjokesto cheerupthesad,frightenedpeoplewhowerewaitingforhim.
Soonallwasready.Thepeoplekneltsilently.FatherPro whispered:"Introiboadaltars Dei"
Suddenlythefrontdoorbell pealedloudly-once--twice.The soundwasominous.Terrified, thepeoplejumpedtotheirfeet. FatherProspokequietlyto them.Hurriedlytheydispersedtootherrooms.'Backinto thekitbagwentthechaliceand paten.
Bythistimethebellwasringingfuriously.FatherProopenedthedoorandlookedwith greatsurpriseatthefourburly policemenwhostoodtheredemandingentrance.
"Thereispublicworshipgoingonhere,"theysaid."We haveawarranttoarrestthe priest."
"Stuffandnonsense!"said FatherPro."You'vecometo thewronghouse."
