triedtoshow,intheteethofall theevidencefromthemanuscripts,thatthesewordstoPeter musthavebeenputinbysomeonelongaftertheGospelwas written,withtheexpresspurposeofprovingtheRoman claims.Theinterestingthing aboutthislineofattackisthat itimplicitlyrecognisesthatthe words"ThouartPeter,etc.,"do meanwhatCatholicshavealwaysunderstoodthemtomean. ItwaspreciselybecauseHarnack sawtheoverwhelmingforceof thewordsthathetriedtoshow thattheywerenotgenuine.But, beinganhonestman,hewas graduallyforcedtowithdraw fromhisposition,firstallowing thatthiswordandthenthatwas probablygenuine,untilhehad practicallydesertedhisformer explanation,andrestoredthe wholetext. Alltheseattemptsbynon-Catholicstogetroundtheobvious meaningofthewordshaveprovedunsuccessful.Whetheryou couldcallthesesomanyefforts attwistingtheGospelisanother matter.Iprefernottousea harshwordliketwisting,because IthinkthatmanyofthenonCatholicscholarswhotriedto weakenthesewords,ortointerprettheminstrangeways,orto removethemaltogether,were goodmen,andtheirattempts werenotmadeinbadfaith.It remains,nevertheless,thatthose attemptshavefailed.
