Accordingtopressreports,the CommunistcoupinCzechoslovakiahascausedquiteaflutterin thedovecotesoftheBritishLabourParty.Astrongly-worded statement,issuedbythenational executivelastweek,claimedthat thosewhosoughttocondonethe "crimeofCzechoslovakia"were falsetotheprinciplesofdemocraticsocialism,forwhichthe LabourPartystood.Thefallof1 thatcountrywas"awarningand alessontoDemocraticSocial-I ists"SubsequentlyMr.HerbertMorrisonwarned"socialist! simpletons"againstco-operation, withtheCommunistswhosought byminorityconspiraciestocapturepowerinTradeUnionsfor subversivepoliticalends.

Thisreflectionbringsustothe questionofwhyLabourgovernmentsarecontenttohandleCommunismwithvelvetgloves.And Ithinkitisaquestionwhich canbestbe'answeredinthewords oftheBritishLabourstatement referredtoabove.Itpointed outthatasectionofSocialistsbelievingapparentlythattheultimateaimsofSocialismanu Communismareverysimilarhadco-operatedwithCommunistsinvariouspartsofEurope (notablyCzechoslovakia).This co-operationhadenabledthe Redstomaketheircoupd'etat successful,buttheSocialistshad foundthemselveshoistedwith theirownpetard.TheCommunistswereandarereadytouse themforalltheyareworth,but onceinthesaddle,havenofurtheruseforthem.Eitherthey mergeintotheCommunistpatternofthingsoratetreatedas "reactionaries."Itisworth whilenotingthatmostofthe modernCommunistaggression couldnothavebeenachieved withoutSocialistco-operation.
