Thereisagrowingenthusiasm forthecelebrationsinhonourot St.Patrickthisyear.Weare returningtothetraditoradmannersosuccessfulinthepastof callinguponourpeopletokeep March1Ali.inaspecialway. Butwehaveimproveduponpast celebrationsbyintroducingthis yearaSolemnHighMass,and thatisim:eedfitting,forSt. Patrick'sDayisessentiallya festivalofourFaith.Noone needhaveadropofIrishblood torealisethatinacknowledging St.PatrickasaPatronweare acclaiming"amightyhusbandmanoftheLord,"thespiritual fatherofaraceofmissionaries, whowalkedthroughtheold landsofEuropebearingthetwin torchesofsanctityandscholarship,andwho,atalatertime, sailedtothenewlandsofAustraliaandNewZealandcarrying astheirmostpricelesspossessionanemberfromPatrick's firewhichtheyenkindledanew inthelandoftheiradoption,and tendedsozealouslythatit,isa fireburningbrightlytoday.
AndinadditiontotheFaith theybroughtwiththemthesons anddaughtersofErin,andtheir descendanshavemadenosmall contributiontothelandsthey havelearnedtoloveandcherish, thewelcominglandsoftheir adoption.
Surelyinthisanxiousworld weall,nomatterwhatourroots are,canraiseourheartsandlift ourvoicestoSt.Patrickthis year,inthewordsoftheancient Irishhymn:

OnthedayitselfthecelebrationswillbeheldattheSubiaco Oval,thesceneofthatmemorablenightoftheCentenary Week.Allthegateswillbe whileopen:nochargeforadmissiontoanypartoftheOval. WehavereservedtheMembers' coveredstandfortheRev. Clergy,diocesanandregular, whowillhavearoomtochange. Tothisstandthemembersof ourReligiousOrdersengagedin teaching,nursing,andcharitable institutionsareinvited.Atthe backofthestandthechoirof girlsfromthecombinedschools oftheSistersofMercy,Victor,a. Square,willbeaccommodated. Theparents,whoshouldbring theirlittlechildrenwiththem, arefreetousetheotherstann, theseatsonthetouchline,and anyotherportionoftheOval. Herearetheitemsofthe celebration:

IhadbeeninDarwinonlya shorttimewhen1visitedits famouswar-scarredgarrison church.Itwastheanniversaryofamemorableday.Mass wasbeingcelebratedtocommemoratethosewholosttheir ayesinthefirstairraidson AustraliaonFebruary19,1943. Allaround,thewallswerepittedwithbulletholesandscarredwheredebrishadfallen. Nearthealtarwasthestatue A*the"WoundedAngel"pierced byshrapnel,butstillstanding sentinelbythetabernacle.Traces ifdamagebyblastandbuffets werevisibleeverywhere.
Ithoughthowthishallowed placehadoncebeenfilledwith theclatterofmilitarybootsand tinhelmets,andhowoftenMass hadbeeninterruptedbythe screamofshellsandgunfire.But onthisdayofremembranceall susdifferent:thechurchwas crowded-mostlywithchildren. Ithoughtthisstrangelysymbolic. Inhissermon,FatherFlynn spokeofthosewhodiedandof thefuture,saying: "Wherethereisdeath,thereis alsoaresurrection."Itistrue thatwhenonegenerationpasses, anewonestandsinitsplace. Thepreparationrequiredfor theworthyreceptionofHoly Communionconsistsinthefollowingtwopoints:inpurifying theconscience,andinfervourof devotion.Theformerisnecessarytoavoidanunworthyand sacrilegiousCommunion.The laterisrequiredthatourCommunionmayobtainforusthe greatestblessing.Thereisrequired,therefore,aboveall,the spirituallifeofthesoulwhich consistsinthepossessionof sanctifyinggrace.Thisisthe weddinggarmentwithoutwhich wearenotpermittedtotake partintheEucharisticbanquet.Ifweareconsciousofa grievoussin,wemust,firstofall, purifyoursoulbyagoodconfession.Isayagoodconfession,onewhichleavesnowellfoundeduneasinessofconscience, aconfessionwhichhasreinstated usinthestateofdivinegrace.
InordertorendertotheHoly Eucharistthevenerationdueto it,andtoreapfromHolyCorn'tunionthepreciousfruitswhich theLordoffersus,thereisrequired,also,thespiritoftrue piety.Letussupposethatyour consciencedoesnotreproachyou withgrievoussin.Yet,ifyou weretoapproachtheHolyTable inanindifferentmanner,andif yourheartwerefullofworldly thoughtandevenvenialsin,if youwenttoHoly'Communionnot somuchfromadesiretounite yourselftoJesusChristasfor thesakeofappearance,ifyou werelackinginlivelyfaithand ardentlove,then,whilenotcommittingasacrilegebyanunworthyCommunion,youwouldreceivelittleadvantageforyour soul.
Andinwthatconsiststhis piety,thisferventdevotionwhich wemusthavewhenweapproach theLord'sTable?Itconsists:
(I)inthecleansingofyoursoul fromeveryattachmentofvenial
PreparationforHoly Communion
sin;(2)intheadorningofyour soulwithChristianvirtues. Aboveall,wemustpurifyour soulandfreeitfromeveryattachmenttovenialsin;wemust renouncevenialsintowhichwe havebeenaddicted.Theseare thefaultswhichhinderusfrom receivingthefullblessingsof HolyCommunion.Donotbelievethattheabodeinaheart giventovainthingsofthis world,aheartstainedbymany venialsins,isabecomingabode fortheDivineGuestGodis highlydispleasedtherewith,becauseHeisaGodofpurity,and accordingtoHisnatureisthe enemyofeveryimpurity:these sinspreventalsothefaithfulcooperationofthesoulwithgrace. Itis,therefore,ofsupremeimportancetopurifyoursouls fromremnantsofasinfulattachment,sothatwemayreceivethe ImmaculateDivineLambwith profitasoursoul'snourishment. Inthismatterofmodestyasit appliestodress,andinaspecial mannertowomen'sattire,what isworthyofremarkisnotthat theCatholicyouthofSydney shouldrebelagainstwhatisso generallytakenforgranted,but thatsuchamoveshouldever havebecomenecessary.
Towhatmayweascribethe decayofmodesty?Ageneration agowehadthe"it"girls,and theflapperswhowereconsidered rathermorelight-headedthan dangerous.Weweretoldthat theyrepresentedareaction againstthepruderyofVictorian 'ratlitions,arevulsionagainst thehorrorsofWorldWarI.,a furthernecessarystepinthe emancipationofwomenandother blahofapsychologicalnature. Whatnobodybotheredtoexplainwiltsthatthewholebusiness aroseoutofalossofthesense ofsin.Therewasnothinghalfso decentaboutitastheneo-pagan reverenceforthehumanform whichoccurredintheRenaissance.Therewasnowhisper abouttheoldGreekidealsofthe soundmindinthesoundbody. Itwasjustsheersmut-blatant andunashamed.Itwasnopart oftheNewIdeaorModernPsychology;itwasthecold-blooded exploitationofsexualprurience -inthemainforprofit-bymen inwhomthgstirringsofthenatvralconsciencewerealmoststilled. Thewholeghastlytidalwave ofsexualpromiscuitywhichhas almostengulfedtheworldinthe lastthirtyyearswasnoaccident ofhistory.Itisimportantto realisethatitwasdeliberately plannedandruthlesslyexecuted, sndthatitsmotivewasthemakingofcolossalfortunes.

Whatweredestroyedbythis large-scaleconspiracyagainst thesplendidChristianconception sfchastityandmodestywereno mereconventionsorpolitetraditionalobservances.Thechief casualtyinthattremendousbut unpublicisedclashwastheimmemorialnaturalconscience.oFr althoughChristianityrounded outandennobledthemoralperceptionsofthenaturalman,it didnotcreateinhimnotionsof morality. Mepossessedthese beforethecomingofChrist,and evenbeforeMosesreceivedthe ,Commandmentsdefinitelyformulated.Godhadengraftedthe essentiallinesofHismorallaw intheheartofmanfromthebeginning.Thesewerenotso clearandsharpasintheminds ofthosemenwhowereprivileged tohaveaccesstodirectDivine Revelation,buttheywereasufficientguide;somuchsothat themostprimitivepaganwould havetoanswertoGodfortheir violation.

Itisquiteinanetoattempta discussionofthiskindwithout directreferencetothequestion ofsin.Immodestyisnotprimarilytobedeploredbecauseit offendsagainstgoodtaste,or becauseitoutrageshumansusceptibilities.ItiswrongbecauseinitselfitoffendsGodand leadstoothersinswhichfurther outragetheDivineMajesty,becausetheyviolatetheDivine Will.Itmatterslessthana tinker'scursewhetherthisor thattypeofraimentisfashionableormodern.Themereelementoftimedoesnothingto mitigatetheabsolutedominion whichthelawsofGodexercise overeachandeveryoneofHis creatures."Whatshallaman dyeinexchangeforhissoul?"
