Whenwarbrokeoutinallits fury,ProfessorSedlarwasa scholar.Heknewnothingof fghting,but,togetherwithhis students,helaidasidehisbooks andnotesandpreparedtodefend JugoslaviaagainsttheGerman invaders.Hewascaptured,but managedtobribehisguardsand escape.Aftertheoccupationof thecountryhewasallowedtoreturntotheUniversity.The "Underground"ResistanceMovementwasfoundedamongstthe youngCatholicmen."Crusaders" theycalledthemselves,andthey weretheequivalentofourown Y.C.W.
Soon,however,hismovements weresuspected,andonemorning,about3a.m.,theGestapoarrestedhimandtransportedhim totheconcentrationcampnear Zagreb.Fromherehewas movedtoViennaandlateron wassenttoPoland'.
EvenintheP.O.W.concentrationandslavelabourcamps,Red agentsweresowingtheseedsat revolution.Whentheyapproachedhimandaskedhimtojointhe partyherefused.Hewaswarned,notonlyoncebutmany times:"Sinceyouwouldnotjoin uswewillkillyouwhenweget topower." Similarthreatsut'eredtohis companionsdeterredthemfrom returninghome.Theyweresent toaD.P.(DisplacedPersons') campinMunich.Herethey formedabranchoftheRoyal JugoslavArmy,inordertoenjoy theprivilegesofmilitarystatus withtheauthorities.
Tito'sConsulcomplainedtothe Americanauthoritiesthatthey wereconspiringagainstthenew JugoslavStateandearlyone morningthecampwassurroundedbyanAmericanarmoured unit.Thecampwasransacked,
dsandvaluablesstolen,and inmatesbeatenup.Thisbrutal treatmentwas,ofcourse,investigated,andtheAmericanCommsonappointedtolookinto thematterexpresseditsregrets andpromisedrestitutionofthe stolengoods,butnothingfurther eventuated. ConditionsinJugoslaviahave deterioratedrapidlyoverthelast fewmonths.Therearenow moreconcentrationcampsunder Titothantherewereduringthe worstperiodoftheGermanoccupation.ManyoftherefugeesfleeingfromJugoslavia haveremarkedthatitwasa wonderfultimewhentheGestapowasinpower."Theyhada certainsystem,"theysaid,"and youknewifyouwereonthesuspectlist.Nowyouareliving underaconstantdoubt.You neverknowwhenyourturnwill be."

PeoplewhovisitaCatholic churchiorthefirsttimeareusuallydeeplyimpressedwiththe quietthatprevails.Somany peoplegatheredtogether,andso muchorderandreverence! Thoughtheybeutterlyignorant ofwhatisgoingon,thestrangsr:,andintheCatholicchurch acalmthatisutterlyrestful,a peacethatisallpervading.
Unless,alas!ithappensthat anepidemicofcoughinghas seizedthecommunity.
Somecoughingisinevitable. Somecoughingispainfulaftermathofhardwinters.Muchof coughing,however,islike mostoftheawfulthroatclearing,plainlynervoushabit,easily controlledbutluxurioustopamperandrelease.

Coughingcansometimesbeas involuntaryasanyotherreflex. Noone,theoldsayinggoes,can hidealove,afire,oracough. Granted.Butonecancontrol allthree andshould.
Whatcanbecontrolled,however-andshouldparticularlybe controlled-isthemaddening habitofprayingaloud.
Haveyoueverattheevening parishservicefoundyourselfsitingjustinfrontofoneofthose dearsoulswhosaytheirrosary insomethingbetweenacroon,a teen,andastagewhisper?She usuallykneels,herheadfarforwardsothathermouthisalmostatyourear.Youfollow 'ierdevotions,deep,passionately devout,resonant,fervid,warm, highlyarticulate,throughthe mysteriesoftherosarytothe inalcrowningofOurLady, Second-handprayersarecerainlynotthemostinspiring, andtheydonotmakefordeep devotiononthepartofenforced listeners.

Insomewhatthesamedisturbingcategoryisthepersonnear ouwhoisalwaysprayerfully nitofstepwhentherosaryis ledbythepriestandanswered ,ythecongregation. Sheanswersthe"Hail,Mary"witha `HolyMary"thatcomesin aboutthemiddleofeveryone :se'sresponse."Hail,Mary..." saysthepriest,prayingdevoutlyhispartoftheprayer."Holy Vary ."answerstocongregation.Andjustastheyreach, prayforussinners.."ourall,ut-of-step-but-Jimletsfortha laudandlong-drawn-out,"Ho-o-ly ."Hersole indsolitaryvoiceisheardlong aftertheresponseofallthe othershasbeenended.
Theantithesisofthistypeis thepray-erwhowantstogive 'heresponseslikeacreatureon thealerttopounce."Hail, Mary,fullofgrace,"saysthe Driest,"theLordiswiththee. Communityprayerisprayer byacommunity.Itisnota solidharmonycarriedforthe thesakeofasoloist'sperformanceofanobligatotowhichthe restaremeremusicalbackground.Thereismuchpolitetessinkeepingone'sprivatedevotionsstrictlyprivateandmakingone'scommunityprayersan integralpartofthecommunity.
VIEWEDFROMTHEPULPIT.
Ifinditagoodthingeverso oftentotakemyplaceinthe pews.Itbringsbacktomea fewoftheproblemsofthepeoplewhokneelthere.Forone thingithasmademethinkfeelinglyaboutbadlydesigned kneelingbenches,thekindthat aretoodosetogetherandthat makeyoukneelasstraightasa ramrod.
OnthesameprincipleIthink thatitmightbeanexcellent thingifoccasionallythefaithful couldgetaview-1pointfromthe pulpit.Perhapsthefacesof thecongregationareareflexreactiontothesermonofthe preacher.Perhapsarather vacuoussermonarousesvacuity intheupturnedfaces,andasermonapathetically prepared arousesacorrespondingapathy inthepeople.
Yettherearetimeswhenthe preacherhasreallytriedtopreparewellandthendohisprayerfulbest.Yethelooksout overacongregationofglazed eyes,unsuppressedyawns,and fingersleafingthroughtheparishbulletin.Itisdeflating. Thereactionmaybedeserved, butit'shardtotake.
Perhapsthepreacherisfar frominspiring.Buthemight retortthattheaveragecongregationisnogreatthrillereither. Maybeifthepeoplesatupwith anairofexpectancy maybe ifthepreachersawresponsein theireyes maybeifthedevoteeofSt.Judedidn'tduring thesermonhurryovertopray ferventlyathisshrine maybe oftheclientoftheLittleFlower didn'tturnthepagesofherlife eagerlyjustasthesermontext wasannounced thepriest wouldbearousedtogreateroratorialflightsandtoakeener desiretoinspirehiscongregation.
Forgreatoratorytheancient textbooksplacedthreenecessary things:agreatsubject,agreat man,agreatoccasion.
Thegreatsubjectwealways have.
Thepriestwouldbeslowever tocallhimselfagreatman.

Confessionisanoccasionwhen goodmannersshouldhavean importantplace.
Mostchurcheshavethecustomofpenitentsstandingin queuesbeforetheconfessionals. Itisanexpedientnottoohappy, butitisnecessary.
Asachild,howIhatedolder people,who,justbecauseIwas youngandhencedefnceless,cut inaheadofmeandsaid,"You don'tmindifIgofirst,dinyou?" Imindedliketheverymischief. ButwhatwasIagainsttheir ageandtheauthorityoftheir years?
Sincethen1havenoticed humantorpedoeswholurkinthe pewsandthen,whensomeoneat theheadofthelinehesitates, suddenlydashoutandintothe confessionalbeforethewaiting penitentscanprotest-orcan tripthevillains.
Itdoesn'tmakeforaprayerfulconfessiontohavesomeone stealyourplaceinline.
Therearesimpleconsiderationsthatpromotemuchgoodwillaroundaconfessional. I will,ofcourse,gladlyhearthe confessionofanyoneatany time;butIofferitupasoneof mymajorpenanceswhenthe penitentbreathesintomydark andnot-too-well-ventilatedcompartmenttheemphasisoffreshlygatheredonions,thesmellof not-too-goodwhiskey,thereek ofstaletobacco,ortheenthusiasticrehearsalofrecentgarlic.

Thatwarningwasjustifiedinthe event,fortheProfessorhasbeen tossedaboutinturbulentseas eversince.Themainsourceof histroublesisplaintofind,for henotinfrequentlyentersthe theologicalarenawithanimpetuositysurprisinginamanadvancedinyears.Thatheshould encountersomeconsistentand solidoppositionisnottobewonderedat,butithasbredarather stonishingreactionintheProfessor.Beforeembarkingon tiletroubledwatersoftheology, theProfessornowindulgesina littledebatingtrickwhichisa mixtureofwhimsicalityandpetulance."Iknows"heseemsto say(withenormousinnocence), "thatmyreplywillinvolveme intheodiumtheologicumofall Christendom."Healmostinters.withthewornfortitudeof amartyrafterprolongedtorture,thatthereissomefurther persecutiontocome.Whatcan hehavedonetomeritsomany slingsandarrows,heasksin mildlypainedoutrage.
Thisattitude,Ihavesaid,is purelyoratorical.HadtheProfessorsuddenlydevelopeda theoryabouttriangleshaving foursides,wouldhedefendhis thesisbycomplainingthatattacksfromorthodoxgeometriciansoftheEuclidianschoolwere, eheexpected,buthewasnot quitesurewhy?Plainlythey hootisontheotherfoot.There isnoconspiracyoftheologians againstProfessorMurdoch.But thereisasustainedandoft-repeatedattemptontheProfessor'sparttodenyortounderminefundamentalChristian truths.Thereisnolittltarroganceinhisattitude,either,despitehislightliterarytouchand goodhumour.Whateverisnot superficiallyobvioustohiscommonsenseisridiculous,andthereforeuntrue.SurelytheProfessorwouldbewillingtoadmit thattheologyisnotlessasciencethanmathematics,requiringthesamecarefulresearch
theairyassumptionthat"to-day nobodybelievesintheresurrectionofthebody-or,atleastnobodywhothinksatall."That dogmaoftheProfessormakesa ratherdecent-sizedlunaticasylumoftheCatholicChurchwith about450,000,000inmates.Some ofthemosteminentthinkersof thedayinphilosophy,literature,andsciencearealllumped togetherinthenon-rationalclass becausetheyareunabletoaccept theMurdochiandenialofwhat allChristendomsubscribesto.It iseasyfortheProfessortobe light-heartedandgoodnatured aboutthingswhichmattertohim slightlylessthanthesmileof heCheshireCatorthePobble WhoHasNoToes.Itisnot andpainstakingstudy.Saintquitesoeasyforthemajorityin AugustineandSaintThomasChristendomwhoregardthereAquinascanscarcelybedismiss-surrectionofthebodyasaDiviyiehopebasedonasupernatural edasabracketofnit-witsnot worthytobecomparedwiththe eruditionofCrawley.AndProfessorMurdochweuld,Iimagine, bethelastonetoventureopinionsontheQuantumTheory. Howthenishesoconfidenton theequallycomplexproblemsof theology,unlesshereallydoes regardthewholescienceas humbuginwhichanydabbler "ayobtainahearingorprofess anauthoritativeview.
Perhapssuchanalogiesmay seemratherremotetotheProfessor;inthatcaseIwillcite someexamplesmorecalculated toshockhimintoarealisation oftherespectiverolesofthespecialistandthedilettante.Supposinganagedmarinedealer fromWidgiemoolthawrotetothe pressprotesting vigorously againsttheEnglishDepartment oftheUniversityonthescore thatMiltonwrotepettifogging rhymes,thatBrowning'seffusionswerenotworththepaper theywerewrittenon,that Shakespeare'ssonnetswerea verbosemessofplatitude,anti that,ingeneral,poetrywasa sharpster'sdeviceforavoiding productivelabour,howwould theProfessorfeel?Wouldhe spsndlongandcarefulyearsrereadingtheclassicslestperchancethenewspapercorrespondentwereright?Orwouldhe merelydismisshimasacrank, unaequaintedwiththetreasury ofgreatliteratureandnotworth areply?Ifthereisanyabsurdityconnectedwiththeologi-

ThissamedoctrineispreachedbyalltheFathersofthe Churchinmoreorlessimplicit termsfromSt.ClementofRome 'oSt.Augustine.Evenfrom reasonitscongruitycanhe shownasastrongpossibility. For,asinourearthlylife,the soulhasanaturalpropensityto thebody,itspermanentseparationwouldseemunnatural.Furthermore,sincethesoulispartnerwiththebodyinitsvirtues andvices,God'sjusticewould seemtodemandthatbothshould sharepunishmentandreward. Again,thesoulseparatedfrom thebod'yisnaturallyimperfect, andtheconsummationofitshappiness,repletewitheverygood. wouldseemtodemandtheresurrectionofthebody.
Evenastothemannerofthat resurrectionandastothecharacteristicsoftherisenbody,a greatdealistobeknownfrom. Revelation.IntheoriginalcreationbyCod,allthingscameperfectfromHishands;likewisein theresurrection,allthingsshall perfectlyrestoredbythesame omnipotenthand.Thedead shallriseintheirownbodies, entireandimmortal.Itisthis lastmentionedqualitywhich marksthechiefdifferencebetweentheearthlyandtherisen body;forthebodiesofboth saintsandsinnersshallbeinvestedwithimmortality.

Thesubjectofthisdiscussion doesnotmakeeasyreading,but itshouldconvinceProfessorMurdochthatbeliefintheresiarectionisnoinventionofpriestcraft,andstilllesssuperstition. Itrestsontheimmutablerock ofGod'sword,andshouldbe worthmorethanasuperficialdismissalinthecolumnsofanewspaper.
