SpecialisedTrainingbyPriests andNuns

HisLordshipBishopGummer hasannouncedthatthescheme conceivedsometimeagobythe PallottineFatherstoconducta MissionSchoolfornativeand colouredchildrenatTardunhas nowmaterialisedandwillcome intooperationattheendofthis month.Theschoolwillcater fornativeandhalf-casteboys andgirls.Inadditiontoathoroughprimaryeducation,the childrenwillreceiveavocationaltrainingsuitedtotheir abilityandrequirements.

Intheconductoftheschool thePallottineFatherswillhave theableassistanceofthePresentationNunsfromGeraldton. Aconvent,nowinthecourseof erection,isnearingcompletion.

FatherGeorgeVill,S.C.A.(SocietyoftheChristianApostolate),SuperiorofSt.Joseph's MonasteryatTardun,takesa keeninterestinthewelfareof thecolouredpeople.Tohimis duetocreditforthetraining schemenowbeinglaunched.He hopesthatthecolouredchildren willrespondtothespecialised trainingwhichwillbegivenat theMissionSchoolandsobeomefittedtotakeanhonour-

ableandusefulandrightful placeinthecommunity. AlthoughOwlsandspecificationshavebeeninhandfora coupleofyearsforthenew building,ithasnotbeenpossible togoaheadwiththeworkowing totheshortageofbuildingmaterials.Thisisagravehandicapattheoutset,butFather Georgehasovercomeittosome extentbyprocuringR.A.A.F. buildings,whichwillservehis purposeuntilsuchtimesasthe permanentbuildingcanbeerected Thistemporaryexpedient hasaddedconsiderablytothe initialcostoftheundertaking andhascompletelyabsorbedthe limitedfundsatthedisposalof thescheme.

Charitablydisposedpersons whowouldliketoassociatethemselveswiththisapostolicwork, whichwillbenefitnotonlythe colouredpeople,butthecommunitygenerally,maydosobyhelpingtofinancetheheavycostof thescheme,whichwilldepend 'hroughoutoncharity.

TheTudorHallat"TayCreggan"(theGrailHouseinMelbourne)presentedaremarkable spectacleontheMondaymorningwhenArchbishopBeovich rosetospeak.Thecasualvisitorwouldhavewonderedwhat hadbroughtthesesixty-five youngsters(theiragesranged from15to18)tosuchagatheringduringtheirholidays.Was ittoarrangesomesporting events?Weretheyataholidaycamp?WeretheypreparingforaUniversitycourseor planningtheirfuturecareers?

No,keepandalertthoughthese ladsandgirlslooked,therewas obviouslynothingoftheholiday orpicnicairaboutthem.It wasnotforamusementthatthey

hadcomesofar. Intwosand threestheyhadsteppedoft planesfromBrokenHill,Adelaide,Sydney,Launceston,Hobart.Trainshadbroughtothers fromdistantTownsville,from Toowoomba,Yass,Grafton,Lismore,Singleton,Lochinvar,Katoomba,Mt.Gambier,Bendigo, Warrnambool,Geelong,Narrandere,Albury,Tocumway,Port Pine,Wangaratta,Forbes.These grlsandboysrepresentedthe Y.C.S.MovementinsomefourteendiocesesthroughoutAustralia.Theyhadtravelledsuch distancestoplan(lutingawhole weekthedevelopmentoftheir Movementduring1948.

Inhisopeningwords,ArchbishopBeovichshowed,clearly thatherecognisedtheextraordinarynatureofthisConference andwesmovedbythesightof theyouthfulgathering.

"IpraythatGodwillbless yourworkandmakeitfruitful. IhavenodoubtHewilldoso; foryouarerespondingwithgenerousheartstothecallofHis Representativeonearth.The primaryandhighpurposeofa Catholicschoolissotoaidparentsthattheirchildrenmaybecomeapostles,andsoldiersof ChristwhowilllivetheirFaith, andifneedshe,willsufferand dieforit....TheY.C.S.isyouropportunitytounitetheknowledgeyougainatyourCatholicschoolswiththelivesthatyou liveinschoolandoutofschool Everystudentmustfacethetask oflivinghisFaith,thatisof unifyinglifeandreligion. TheY.C.S.isauniqueorganisation.Itis,asitshandbook declares,aMovementOFstudentsrunBYstudentsFORstudents.Inthefewyearsofits existence,ithasgrownfroma fewgroupsinsomeMelbourne CollegestoaMovementthathas enlistedthesupportofapproximately4,500students,andthese comefromtheseniorclasses only.Whilstmembershipis opentoall,itispurelyvoluntary.TheY.C.Sisnotsetina schoolbytheauthorities;it arisesfromrequestsmadetothe authoritiesbythestudentsthemselves.Thesesamestudents suntheirowngroupandactivities,receivinggenerousase'etanceandwiseguidancefrom thereligiousassistantsappointedforthatpurpose

TheY.0S.isoneofthemost valuableofthelayorganisations thathavegrownupin-recent yearsunderthefar-sighteddirectionoftheEpiscopalCommitteeofCatholicAction.The confidenceoftheBishopsinthe youngervenerationofAustratienCatholicshasbeenjustified. Whatothercausecouldhave broughttogethersuchagroup- ingofstudentsintheirholidays toplantheirapostolateinthe studentworld?

Onegainsanewsenseofcon,:lenceinthefutureofthisnationwhenonerealisesthepoten-tialresourcesofenergyandin`elligententhusiasmintheY.C.S. Attheirmeetingsheldwithout ostentationintheirsparetime, `heladsandgildsinourcolleges aretrainingthemselvestobe worthycitizens,capableleaders, wide-awakeandactiveChristians.Itisnotsurprisingthat manyreligiduscamealongto +hisNationalSchool,andthat manywell-knownpriestsand laymengavetheirservicesas lecturers.Thesestudentsare worthyofthebestwecangive 'hem.

"todevelop sCatholicmindonlife" "to learntosee,judgeandacton alltheproblemsaffectingstudents" "toacceptresponsibility" tolinkreligionand 'h"lifeofstudents."Theseare hardtasks,andtherewillhe failuresandfallings.Tokeep "pactivity,tomasterthetechni'noofinfluence-thesearenot easyforyoungpeople.Itwas ofthatfactthattheirEpiscopal Chairmanwasremindingthem whenhedeclaredinconcluding: "IdeclareyourSummerSchool ',nen,andIplaceitunderthe ProtectionofOurLadyofFatima.Thatwillremindyouto saytheRosaryeveryday,for prayerandco-operationwith God'sGracearethemostnecessaryfoundationsoftheY.C.S. astheyareofallCatholicAction."

TheletterofMr.T.Burke, M.H.R.,onPage6,shedsnonew lightonthehighlycontentious subjectofthenationalisationof theprivatebanks.Indeed,apart fromcomplainingofmydubbing theCommonwealthaction''aconfidencetrick,"Mr.Burkehas contentedhimselfwithastringingtogetheraseriesofplati- tudesandhalftruthstowhicha detailedreplyisneitherpossible nordesirable.

Inpresumingthatmyopinions aremyown,Mr.Burkeisquite correct.Thereisnosuchthing asTHECatholicattitudeonthe bankingproposals.Butinhis secondassumption-thatmy viewsarenotsharedbyavery largenumberofpeople-Mr. Burkeignoresaverypertinentandindisputablefact,thesame indeedwhichledmetodescribe hisGovernment'sactionasa confidencetrick.IfoneconsiderstheAustraliannationas awhole,onecannotfailtobe impressedthattwoGalluppolls (takenmonthsapart)revealed thattwooutofthreeAustralian citizensopposetheGovernment onthisissue.IfMr.Burkewill notaccepttheGallupverdict, perhapstheoutcomeoftheVic t,orianelectionsmightimpress him.Andifhewantsindicationsnearerhome,theruralreceptionofhiscolleagues'belated apologiesshouldstrikehimwith someforce.

Sinceitistheallegationofa confidencetrickthatworriesand irritatestheFederalmemberfor Perth,willconfinemyselfto justifyingthegroundsforthat description.Mr.Burketalksa greatdealabout"asovereign Stateelectedbythepeoplefor thepeople,"and"responsible' and"elected"governments.But neitherhe,northePrimeMinister,noranyoneelsethatIknow at%hascameforwardtoexplain howagovernment,professinglip servicetodemocracy,couldhave goneaheadwiththebanking measurewhenthepopularwill wasplainlyandoverwhelming lyagainstit.Ifitistruethi, theGovernmentneedednomandate,itisequalytruethatit fearedareferendum;itwould undoubtedlyhavelostnotonly thisissuebutitstenureof office. Itwouldhavereceived themostresoundingno-confidencevoteeverrecordedinAustralianhistory. ItstrikesmeasoddthatMr. Burkehasnotattemptedtomeet mycentralargumentagainsthis Government'sconfidencetrick, andthatis,thatitclearlycontravenestheprincipleofsubidiarity.Itwasplainfromthe CommonwealthBankActof 1945thatafar-reachingcontrol ofthebankswastobehadshort ofdirectownershipandoperation.Furthermore,thereisno regardinthemeasureforthe Butperhaps,inwritingtoadevelopmentofco-operative Catholicjournal,Mr.Burkehadbankinginstitutionsandcredit Catholicopinionintheforefrontunions,whicharecentraltoCa- ofhismind.Hisrelianceontholicnotionsofsociology.And theviewsofMonsignorDevineinsuchanomission,despiteCom"TheStMary'sMessenger,"monwealth-wideprotestfromCawouldindicatethatthisisso.tholicsources,arguesthatthe Buthewillfarenobetterinthisprimarypreoccupationofthe direction.TheveryisolationofGovernmentisnottheliberation hisauthorityshouldcausehimofcitizensfromthetyrannous tospeculateaboutmajorityCa-poweroftheprivatebanks,but tholicopinion.SofarasIknow,simplyanappetitetovestthat apartfromtheinstancehepowerinthecentralpolitical quotes,theonlyotherCatholicexecutive.

paperinAustraliatofavourthe Ihavesaidonmorethanone Government'sproposalswas"Theoccasionandinunequivocal CatholicWorker,"anditsac-terms,thatCatholicshaveno ceptancewashedgedaroundtearstoshedfortheprivate withprotectiveclauseswhichbanks.NeitherdoesanyCatho- werenot,however,incorporated intheActwhichpassedthrough theFederalHcuse.

HenceImayclaimtospeakfor amuchgreaterbodyofpeople thanMr.Burkeseemstorealise.

Thetruthofanargumentisnot, however,bornedownbymere numericalsupportoropposition, butitisofnouseforMr.Burke topretendthattheBankingBill haspopularsupportwherethe reversehasbeensoconvincingly demonstrated.

besoregardedbyanyonewho prizesrealvalues.ThereisunquestionablyanautocratictemperinthepresentFederalGovernmentwhichnoneofthem botherstoexplain.Thegrab fortheAirlinesisbutonesymptomofauniversaltendencyto controlthelivesandfortunesof :ridividuals,muchastheNazis andFascistsdid,andasCommunismdueseverywhereitisin thesaddle.

TherehasneverbeenanauthoritativeCatholiccondemnationofLabour'ssocialisationObjective,becausetheword"socialisation"hasnotbeenofficially defined-Therehasalwaysbeen ahopethatitmightbecon.truedinamanneracceptableto Catholicsocialprinciples.But thehopebecomesfainterasthe FederalOctopusmakesnaked andunashamedattemptsagainst therightsandpowersofthe Statesandofindividuals.The stageissetforashowdowin.And ifthereisanyquestionofthe centralisationofpoliticalpower suchasenvisagestheliquidation oftheStatesandoflocalgoverningauthorities,Canberramay restassuredofmorethanpoliticalopposition.Forsucha courseinvolvesthedenialof moralprinciplestowhichCatholicsarecommittedthroughthe NaturalLawItmightevenbe necessary,ifthistrendcontinues,tocallCatholicsoutof theLabourParty.

Thatthisparlousandunhappy conditionprevailsislargelythe responsibilityofCatholicsin politicallifewhohavechosento bepartymenfirstandCatholics afterwards.Itisalineofconductthatisbecomingincreasinglyuntenable.

WhenMr.Burkeblamesthe privatebanksforthedivisionof theworldintohostileclasses,for traderivalrybetweennations andforbreedingwar,famineand Communism,andtheDepression, Icanonlysaythatheisnotvery soundinsocialandeconomic history.Itisalittletoosweep ingtobesubstantiallytrue.I willconcludebyquotingwhat1 wroteinNovemberoflastyear, becauseitcontains,Ibelieve,the cruxofthequestion.

"Whatshouldconcernusis whethertheSocialistshaveany higherconceptionoflifethanthe Capitalists.Ismoneytobethe instrumentofpowerormerely thehandmaidenofproduction'.' Isitreallypossibletorestore moneytoitspropersocialfunctionasarationaltokenofexchange,solongasthemassof menareactuatedbythespirit ofgreed,bythedesiretomake moneyquickly,andpreferably withoutworkandbythephilosophywhichmakestheacquisitionofwealthanendinitself andresentstheideathatitsemploymentshouldberegulatedby liecriticismofnationalisationmoralconceptions?Inaword, implyapprovalofthesystemofisSocialismahealthier(oreven privatebankinginitspre-warradicallydifferent)spiritualat- usages.ButthereisaverymospherethanCapitalism?Ibeg seriousdoubtinmymind,andintodoubtit." manyotherminds,whetherany realreformwillhavebeeneffectedbyatransferencetoFederalGovernmentmonopoly. Ihavesaidfurtherthatcould bankingnationalisationberegardedasasingleissue,Iwould approveit,givencertaindefinitivesafeguaddsButitcannot FORYOUREYES

Thereisanoldandwisedictumwarningagainstaddingfuel tothefire.Butitisnotfor thispurposethatImentionthe recentstrikeoftheMentalNurses'UnionattheClaremont Asylum.ThedecisionoftheAppealBoard,despiteitsstatement tothecontrary,seemstoindicate thattheoriginalpenaltyonthe defaultingmalenursewasexcessive.Inanycase,ithas beenmitigated,andtheincident hasbeensatisfactorilyclosed.

toremainattheirpostsuntil theirgrievanceshavebeenadjustedbynormal,constitutional measures.

Itistobedeploredthatthe publicisnotsoreadytoexcoriateothertypesofstrikeswhose effectsdonottakesuchimmediateandclosetolloftheir necessityorconvenience.When hundredsoftonsofcoalarelost, forwhichvitalindustriesare clamouring,merelybecausea horsehasdevelopedahabitof belchingbadbreath,itistime indeedtospeakofirresponsibility.Ooalminerscomplainof theunpleasantnessoftheirjob- andHeavenknowsitisunpleasantenough-butaretheyworse offthanmentalnurses? Igit moretryingtoworkuptothe waistinwateralldaythanto havetoseeandlistentothe inanitiesandobscenitiesofa humanbeingwhoisincapableof provinghisessentialhumanity? Ifthedepressionandexhaustion inducedbythelackofreasonis notareasonforceasingwork, arewereallyexpectedtotreat animalhalitosisseriously?

Itwasrecentlyreportedinthe PressthataSydneyChurchof Englandmagazinehaddeclared inaleadingarticlethatwomen andgirlswhodressina"provocativemanner"helptoinflame thepassionsofsexcrilminais.

"Inallinnocence,"saidthe paper,''womenandgirlspare& thestreetsandusethetrains andtramsincostumeswhichmay besuitableforthebeachesbut areemphaticallynotseemlyfor useamongnormallydressedcitizens.Itisatragicfactthat theinnocentvictimofanoutrage israrelytheonewhoearlierin thedayhasunconsciouslyinflamedthepassionsofthecriminal ofthedarklaneorquietstreet atnighttime."

Thisisamatterwhich,ordinarily,wouldnotcallforcomment,becauseitissopike-stavedlyplain.ButtomyastonishmentIreadinoureveningcontemporarythatfiveorsixpeople,interviewedina"straw poll,"didnotagree.

Onecannotbutreflectruefully uponthedecayofmodesty.If anyproofwereneededofits absencethemostvividwouldbe thestartwithwhichmanypeoplereceivethenewsofitsrum-

ouredreturn.Ifancythatthe matterisbestseeninsomekind ofhistoricalperspective.There wasatimewhentheceremonial ofdressreflectedthevocational statusofitswearer.Inme diaevaltimesthe'variousguildsweredistinguishablebytheircostumes,andtheknightsandmenat-armsofaparticularlordwere toberecognisedbytheirlivery. Unhappily,eveninthosedays- andlongbefore-streetwomen weregroupedinaprofession. They,too,wereeasilydistinguishedbytheirdressandby theiruseofcosmetics,Ithink thatrightuptorecenttimes theywerecalled"paintedwomen."Certainlythereisa mentionoftheScarletWoman intheApocalypse.

Anyhow,therewassomesacramentalconnectionbetweenthe raimentandthedailyoccupa- tion,thatis,therewasanoutwardandvisiblesignthatdenotedthenatureofaperson's socialquality.

ImaybewrongbutIfancy thatthesacramentaloutlookis fundamentaltohumannature. Wedotendtojudgeabirdby itsfeathers,andeventhough clothesdonotmaketheman, theymaysometimesindicate whatmannerofmanheis.

Thiswordypreambleisby wayoflamentthatitisnotlongerpossibletodistinguishthe streetwomanfromherligh',but virtuoussisterinthematterof dress.OfcosmeticsIwillnot speak.Itisenoughtoshudder. Butevenanormalmanmight,in someinstances.beexcusedfor makinganerroneousjudgment.

Ifonecouldprescindfromthe effectsofOriginalSin,one mightclaimthat"provocative dress"didnotinflamethepassionsofnormalmen.Alas!it isnotso.WehavetoSuffer andtoovercometheconcapis cenceoftheeyes,andanydecent,honestmanwilladmitit. Thatis,hemayreceivenorevelationwhatsoever.Itis, however,inthefreepickingandchoosingofhisinformationthatheisdivinelyguarded.ItisinthisDivineills:minationofthewriter'sjudgmentthatInspirationconsists.ItdiffersfromRevelationandfromInfallibility. RevelationcannotbeappliedtoalltheBible,becauseitis notallDivinelyrevealed.NeithercanInfallibility,becausethisonlyguaranteesthetruthofdoctrinesoffaith c,rmorals,whereaseverythingintheBibleistrue.

ThougheverythingintheBibleistrue,itisnotnecessarilytrueinthesamesense.Thesameappliestoevery !)ranchofliterature.Therearevariousformsofspeech inuse,suchasmetaphor,parable,fable,proverbs,poe'..y, rirama,aswellashistoricalcomposition.Itisimmater,s4 tothesublimelessonsconveyedby"Othello,"forinstance, whethersuchapersonas"TheMoorofVenice"everactuallyexisted.Yetitcontainsdidactictruth,thoughnot historicallytrue.So,too,withtheProdigalSon,inthe parable,andwithJobinthatdramaticwork.ThisdistinctionappliestoalltheBible.Godusedthehuman writerwithhismethodsofliteraryexpressionasameans fcommunicatingtousHismessage.Whenwesaythat allScriptureistrue,wehavetoexaminetheparticular formofliteraryexpressionthatisbeingemployedbefore wecanjudgewhetheritishistoricordidactictruththatis beingtaught.

Butperhapstherearehistoricerrorsinthepartsof theBiblethatareconfessedlyhistoricalrecords?Not alltheresearchoffriendorfoehasbeenabletofindone historicalerrorintheBible.Onthecontrary,theresearchwork,sofarasithasproceeded,hassubstainedthe trutheveninminutedetailsoftheBiblenarrativeThe NewTestamentgivesthebestopportunityforcomparisonwithcontemporaryhistory.Yet,inspiteof150years ofuntiringinvestigation,notasinglehistoricalerrorhas teenproved.Itisadvisable,therefore,tobeonone's guardagainstacceptingboldstatementsabouterrorsin theBible,whichareconstantlytobetracedtorationalistic oratheisticwriters,andwhichhavenofoundationinfact.

As"Optimist"hasstated,the emphasisisontheyouthofthe communityallthetime,rightly noperhaps,thecominggenerationisthemostimportant.Nevertheless,therearemanypeople, bothmenandwomen,overthe ageoftwenty-five,who,through nofaultoftheirown,areintenselylonelyandwhostillfeel youngenoughtocravecompanionshipoftheoppositesex.This companionshipisoftendenied themthroughlackofopportun- itytomeetonacommonground. IdothinkthataClubassug- gestedby"Optimist"wouldgo alongwaytowardssolvingthis problem. TheothercaseistheMarlborough-Vanderbiltcase. On November6,1895,theDukeof Marlboroughwentthrougha marriageceremonywithanAmericangirlcalledConsueloVanderbilt.BothwereProtestants. Themarriagewasunhappy,and

thecoupleseparatedin1905. Fifteenyearslatertheyobtainedacivildivorceandmarried again.Sometimeafterthat, theCatholicChurchwasasked topronounceonthevalidityof thefirstmarriage. Atrial washeldatSouthwarkinEng- land,whiletheDukeofMarlboroughwasstillaProtestant. Iobservedthefactsforabit afterthatandfoundthatshe wasright.

Wecanstartwiththetruism thatCatholicsdonotgoto churchtoshowofftheirgood clothes.Ontheotherhand, averageCatholicsarerather carefulaboutwhattheywearto church.TheyknowthatGod wouldprefertoseethemthere inragsthanhavethemstayat home.Iftheyareboundfor thelinksanddressedforgolf, theydon'thesitateonthataccounttogotoMassfirst.On theirwaytowork,dressedin workclothes,theystopinat church.Thatisasitshouldbe.

Rightnow,withthefashions dippingandrisinginextremes, thequestionofclothesinchurch isonethattouchesbothmen andwomen.Menaswellas womenareboundbyrulesfor modestyindress.Fashionsthat arenottoosoundevenonthe beachcertainlyarecompletely unsoundinchurch.Stylesthat makeeventhelessconservative liftaneyebrowwouldrightly causetheeyebrowtoriseseveral wrinkleshigherifthosestyles wereexhibitedatMass.That isjustcommonsense.

Theearliestappearanceofpews wasapparentlyinProtestant churches,wherekneelingwasreducedtoaminimum.Pewswere notdesignedprimarilyforCatholicdevotions.Whenthepersonaheadofyouissittingdown, itisverydifficultforyouto kneelwithoutdrivingyourfoldedhandsintothebackofhip neck.Ifthepersonbehindyou iskneeling,youcannotsuddenly sitdownwithoutthrowinghim offhisbalanceandcertainlyput- tinghimoutofaspiritofrapt recollection.

Icanoffernosolutionforthis problembeyondapleafora generaldecencyandcourtesy, likethatwhichwedisplaytowardanyonewhodependsupon usforcomfortandmoderate peaceofmind.Again,thatis justamatterofsimplethought- fulness.

TheCatholicwhoknowshis religioncomestoMassproperly equipped.Heisatleastaswell, preparedasasportsmangoing toagameoranoperaloverto theopera.Hedoesnotcome empty-handed.Hecarrieshis missalashisguidetotieMass andhismeansofpersonalpar- ticipationintheMass.Orhe bringsaprayerbook.Ifhe prefershisrosary,hehashis rosaryreadyforuse.

Nooneelselooksmoreignorantormorediscourteousthan themanorthewomanwhois empty-handedduringMassora churchservice,whoselookgrows vagueanddistracted,andwhose eyesinevitablystarttowander -suresignthatthemindis wandering.too.Itistragicthat, thephysicalpresencebeingall thatisrequiredtoavoidthe mortalsinofmissingMass,so manyCatholicsduringtheinfinitelypreciousmomentsofMass doabsolutelynothing.

Onlyafewblackenedwallsremainofwhatwas,beforeitsdestructionbyfire-bombsin1941, London'schiefconcerthall.Near byisBroadcastingHouse,the hugeheadquartersoftheB.B.C. Ratherunusualindesign,one wouldnoterrgreatlyincomparingittothecurvingbulkof anoceanliner. Astriking sculpturedgroupbythatfineCatholicartist,thelateEricGill, wasoverthemainentrance.It depictsArielbeingsentoutinto theworldbyProspero.Istrolledinsideandwasabouttoascendthestaircasewhenauniformedattendantsoonintimated (butwithconsummatetact)that therewas"nothingdoing,"and afewsecondslaterIhadrejoinedArielandProsperointhe sunlight.

Thestoryisbutlooselybased onthelifestoriesofClara Wieck,RobertSchumann,and JohannesBrahms.Thepart thattheyandtheirmusic,and whatmodernmusicianshipand technicalknowledgehadtocontributetothemakingofthe film,wasagreatone;butthe "Hollywood"initwasagreat betrayal.Itcouldhavebeen wonderful.Thinkofwhatthe ContinentorEnglandcouldhave donewithit.Thedetailwas terrihleattimes.ClaraWieck, aculturedandpolishedwoman, failstomakeprovisionforthe feedingofherbaby,andhasto cutshortaconcertgiveninHis Majesty'spresencetosatisfy baby.RobertandClaraSchumannmanagetospeakwithalmostnotraceofanAmericanaccent,buttheSchumannchildren havethebroadestAmericanaccentinauthenticoldGerman surroundings!Apianothathas hornlockedforalongtimeis opened,perfectlyintune,nodust! Thisisinartisticinexactitude, anddifficulttounderstandwhen onethinksofthefortunethat musthavebeenspentonthe makingofthisproduction.No onewhohasevermetacomposercouldimaginehimtalkingout aloudtothegreatdiscomforture ofhisneighboursduringaperformanceofhisownSymphonycertainlynotBrahmS!Toanyonewithanyeducationatall,the scenewhereJohannesandClara (likeabuddieandhissweetie) haveagypsyplaySchumann's 'Dedication,"tothemonanemotionallymaudlinviolinisnauseating.

ThetruestoryofSchumann andBrahmsandClaraWieckis oneoftoenoblestinthehistory ofartandthehumanrace.The pure,unselfishandself-sacrificingloveofBrahmsforSchumann'swife,whichheturnedinto adeepfriendshipforallofthem, isloveonaspiritualplane.With allreverenceIsaythatapurer andmoreelevatedlovehasnever beenknownsincetheloveofJosephforMary.Whataperiod ofgrtatmusictheirswas.At thetimeoftheSchumannmarriage,BeethovenandSchubert hadonlyjustdied.Chopin,Mendelssohn,Rossini,Verdi,Wagner, Gounod,Franck, Bruchner, Strauss,Weber,Brahms,MoussorgskyandTschaikowskywere living.WithinfouryearsChabrier,Dvorak,MassenetandGrieg wereborn.

THEACTING.

TheactingofPaulHenreid,as Schumann,orastheHollywood versionofSchumann,wasexcellent.Thehardworkthathe andtheothersmusthavedoneto simulatethemovementsofplayingthepianomusthavebeenincredible.Imustsaythatnota movementorasinglenoteof anyoftheworksplayedwasthe slightestfractionout.Idoubt thatanybutapianistcouldhave seenthattheactorswerenotactuallyplayingthemusic.The scenewhereSchumann'smadness

fakesitsoclumsilythatheis accusedofhisownmurder.In stillanotheraccidenthegetsso badlyscarredthathisownwife doesnotrecognisehim.Herefusestodefendoridentifyhimself,andswearsNoratosecrecy -notrecommended.

RobertWalkerwasasunlike theauthenticBrahmsinappearanceandmannerasanyonecould possiblybe.HeactedtheHollywoodversionwell,buttoanyone whohasreadanythingaboutthe manandtheperioditwasallincrediblysilly.

THEMUSIC.

Onthecreditsidewasthe wonderfulmusic.Thatwasauthenticenough. ,Iregrettednot beingabletohearalltheSchumannConcerto,andmanyofthe otherworksintroduced.Rubensteinplayedforallthecharacters,anditwassheerdelightto listentohim.Ofcoursemany ofthenumberschosenwerethe moresentimentalones.ThatI supposeisonlynatural,asthe mainideainmakingafilmisto MIthetheatres,nottomakea greatworkofart.Nonetheless one,thinksregretfullyofwhat couldhavebeenmadeofit.A lotofdevastatingthingscouldin justicebesaid,otherscouldhave multipliedsuperlativesinpraise, butImustcountmyselfamong those%ohoconsiderthatthememoryofgreatpeopleandtrueart hasbeenbetrayedfortheglory of"populartasteandthebox office."
