TheopeningofthenewSt.JohnofGodHospitalatNortham,byHisGracetheArchbishop,onSundaylast,25th.inst., markedyetanothermilestoneintheprogressoftheChurchin theWest,andthebeginningofyetanotherchapterinthework ofmercyandhealingofthenursingSistersofSt.JohnofGod.
Abouttwohundredandthirty peoplewerepresentwhenHis Graceblessedanddeclaredopen thenewhospital.Thebuilding isrichinhistoricalassociations.
OneoftheoldThrossellhomesteads,ithadbeenuseduptill abouteightmonthsagoasa privatehospital.Thedifficulties ofstaffingsuchahospitalinthe countrywereinsurmountable, andtheMatronwasforcedto closedown.
ExtensiverenovationswereundertakenbytheSisters,andnow thebuildinghastakenontheappearanceofourotherhospitals -whitewalls,gleamingtiles, spotlesslinenandshiningstainlesssteel.
Forthemomentthehospital willbeabletocopewithonly fourteenmaternitycases,butit ishopedthatintheverynear futurethisnumberwillbeincreased.Thelabourwardis equippedwithitsownemergency lightingplantincaseofpower breakdowns,andallthefittings throughoutthehospitalareof stainlesssteel.
Afeatureofthebuildingis thelargeutilityblock,which willbeofgreathelptotheSisters. Staffdifficultieshavebeenovercome,andalreadythehospital hasbeenbookedoutbyprospectivepatients.Thefirstpa- tientwillbeadmittedduringthe firstweekinFebruary.
TheNunswillbehousedtemporarilyinthehospitalpending theerectionofanex-Armyhut, whichwillserveasaconvent untilsuchtimesasaproper buildingcanbeerected.

HisGracetheArchbishop,in thecourseofhisaddress,announcedthatthehospitalwould caterformaternityworkonly forthepresent,butitwasthe intentionoftheSisterstobuild amodernhospitalwhichwould caterbothforgeneralandmaternityworkassoonascircumstancesmadethisventurepossibleandpracticable.
"Timewas,"hesaid."notmore thaneightyyearsago,when neighbourslookedupontheremovalofapatienttohospital asasignoffamilyneglect orindifference."Now,however, thingsweredifferent,andafter thegreatrevolutioninmedicine thewholeprofessionwaslifted toapositionasthemostglorifiedofthesciencesDoctors werenowabletotaketheir placeasthemosthonouredof
professionalmen,whileahospitalpassedfromaplaceofnamelesshorrorstoahomeofcures Modernhospitalshavebecomea radiantfountofserviceand health,andinthatreformation
NursingWasessentiallyawoman'swork,hestated.Itisd workthatrequiresawoman's sweetnessandpatience,awoman'sunderstandingofmoods andtirednervesandbruised bodies,awoman'stactinlifting despondentsoulsfromlistless despairtolivinghope.

Thismissionbeganwitha RussianpriestarrivinginShanghaiin1928,anddiscoveringthat therewerequiteanumberof RussianCatholicstheregoingto churchesoftheLatinrite.
Hestartedamissionforthem intheirown(Slav-Byzantine) rite. TheHolySeesentsomeJesuits oftheRussianritetohelphim. FatherF.Wilcock,nowawellknownfigureinShanghai,arrivedearlyin1939,and,grasping thesituationatonce,settowork energetically.
TwootherJesuitsoftheRussianrite,FatherMilnerand FatherMeyers,joinedhimin 1941, ClubsOpened.
OneofFatherWilcock'sfirst concernswasfortheRussian boysandgirls.
Heopenedaclubfortheboys, andtheIrishSistersofSt.Columbanagreedtodothesamefor thegirls.
In1940theIrishSisters changedtheirhousetotheRussianrite. Avitalneed,however,wasto givevocationstothepriesthood achancetodevelopamongthe Russianboys.

HisGracepaidtributetotheNursingProfession,especialyinthehandsofNuns. ourownCatholichospitalshave donetheirpartnobly,generouslyandwell. HisGracerecalledthatithad beensaidthatmodernnursing hadbeencalledthegreatestinventionofthenineteenthcentury.Acallingthathadonce beenaby-wordforinefficiency hadnowbecomeanhonoured andexpertprofession."The worldhascometoknowthat efficientnursing,nolessthan skilledsurgeryandscientific treatment,liesatthebaseof mostcures."

Bothinregardtothelegal conflictoverthenationalisation ofbanking,whichistoopennext month,andtheforthcomingreferendumonpricesandrents, theultimatepointtobedecided iswhethertheelectorscantrust theGovernmentwithaugmented powers.Thereisnoneedtobe politicallypartisaninreaching suchadecision,forarecentGallupPollhasshownittobethe reactionofthemajorityofthe Australianpeople.Whereasthe avowedandprofessionalenemies ofLabourdeclarethattheGovernmentismovingcovertlybut relentlesslytowardstotalitarianism,ithasalwaysbeenLabour's defencethatitneededspecified powers,notforthemeresakeof havingthem,butbecausethey wereessentialtolegislationfor thecommongood.Butduring theweektheFederalMinister forTransport(Mr.E.J.Ward) declaredunequivocallyinSydney:"Australiamustgetridof StateParliamentsbeforethe peoplecouldhaveanoutlookthat wouldmakethemagreatnation. Australiawasagreatcountry, buttobeagreatnationwehad tohaveaParliamentwithpower todealwithnationalproblemsin anationalway.Australia'spioneersdeservedtribute,butunlesswespeededthedevelopment ofAustraliawewouldneverhold it.AndwewouldneverdevelopAustraliawhilewehad StateGovernmentsandStateinterests."
Thisisthemostextremeand sweepingclaimeverpublicly madebyaresponsiblepolitician inrecenttimes,andwhetherLabourasabodylikesitornot,it willbeconstruedbythosewho
havehadmountingsuspicionsas proofpositiveofLabour'sreal, thoughconcealed,intentions.Mr. Chifleyisnotlikelytobemoved fromhismonumentalsilenceto denyasmalloutburstofthat kindfromamemberofhisCabinet.IndeedMr.Ward'sindiscretionisofapiecewiththe PrimeMinister'sgenerallycontemptuousattitudetowardsthe States.Butitseemstomethat, althoughCanberrahasallthe expertsinthebag,ithasneglectedtoincludeareallyreliable psychologist.Anybodywhoknew anythingabouthumanbehaviourcouldhavetoldMr.Ward thatthepublichasnotbyany meansforgottentheconfidence trickbywhichLabourpushed throughitsbankinglegislation. CertainlyMr.NelsonLemmon andSenatorFrasercouldhave assuredhimthatitwasanythinm butadeadissueinthisState. Andcertainlyastatementof thatkindmusthavebeenembarrassingtothePrimeMinisteron hisvisittotheSecessionist State. IfMr.Ward'sviewsreallyreflectedthoseofthepresentFederalCabinetandoftheLabour Movementasawhole,itwould beaplainandsolemndutyfor theAustraliancitizentooust themfromoffice.Itwouldassuredlybemorethandoubtful whetherCatholicscouldcontinue togivesupporttoapolitical partyavowedlytotalitarianinits endsandinthemeansitproposes toachievethem.Thereisno casewhateverforthecomplete unificationenvisagedbyMr. Ward.ItwouldplaceAustralia onallfours,politically,economically,andsociallywithSoviet FORTHEFIRSTTIMEINPERTH!

RecentlyPopePiusXII.wrote alettertoPresidentTruman whichhasbeenmadepublic.It containsamessagenotonlyforthePresidentofAmericabut foreverypersonofgoodwill.
ThePopecalledonloversof truthtobe"boldtodefendit andgenerousenoughtosetthe courseoftheirlivesbothnationalandpersonalbyitsdictates. Thiswillrequire,moreover,correctingnotafewaberrations."

Isaythatitiscertainfrom reason.BeforetheChristian revelationwasgiv4ntothe v,orld,menhadcometotheconclusionthatthesoullivedon afterdeath.Thehumblest Egyptianpeasantwascertain thathissoulwentwithitsgood deedsandbadtofacejudgement.Andattheotherextreme, thegreatestandthew$lsestof theGreekthinkers.Plato,wrote hisnoblestwordsontheimmortalityofthesoul.Heknewthat itwillalwaysbewellwitha goodman,whetherinlifeorin death.
Justthinknow,''Wondering," howitisthatthingsaredestroyedanddie.Ifyouhavea materialthing,madeupofparts, youhavemerelytobreakitup, toseparatetheparts,andthen thethingisnomore.Youtake abottleandbreakitagainsta stone.Younolongerhavea bottle;allyouhaveisaheap ofbrokenglass.Inthesameway youcantakealivingthing,a plantorananimal,anddestroy thembybreakinguptheirdelicateorganism.Andthenyouno longerhaveaplantorananimal, arose.say,oradog,butsimply theremainsofaroseordog. Itisobviousthatyoucando thesamethingwiththehuman body.Youhaveonlytopierce thebrainorinterferewiththe beatingoftheheart,andthe bodyceasestolive. Duringtheyearsofwar,worriedparents,sisters,brothers, sweetheartsandfriendsjammed thechurchestoprayforthe safetyoftheirlovedones.PetitionsweresenttoGodfor thereturnfromthebattlefields ofallofthegallantyoungmen andwomen-andforvictoryThe majorityofthoseinthearmed forcescamehome.AndAmerica anditsallieswonthewar.

Itisrarelyindeedthatlovers ofclassicaldancingaregiventhe opportunityofenjoyingtheskill andartistryofareallytalentea performer,andthosewhoattendedthesecondrecitalgivenby MissSaraLuzitaattheSomervilleAuditoriumonWednesday, January21,gavefullappreciationtoafineperformance.Once againthepublicareindebtedto theUniversityAdultEducation Boardforsponsoringsuchhigh classentertainment,andthevery factthatalmosttwothousand personswereinattendance makesitindeedobviousthat companiessuchastheBallet Lambert,ofathichMissLuzita isamember,wouldbemostenthusiasticallyreceivedandsupportedbyWestAustralianlovers oftheballet.
TheprogrammewaspredominantlySpanishinorigin,and verynearlyallMissLuzita's itemswereperformedtowith castanetsasanintegralpartof thedance.
HerfirstitemwasaBolero,a dancebasedonclassicalballet technique,performedinpoint shoesandballetskirt,withslow, gracefulmovements.Thiswas followedbyadancetothemusic ofAlbeniz,"Cordoba,'atypical Spanishdance,gayandcolourful.ThenfollowedaFlamenco,adanceofgypsyorigin, withallitsgayabandon,clickingofheelsandofcastanets.

DeborahKerrisanexcellent foilforGable.Shetypifiesall thatisbestinawoman.andarrestsGable'slowerinstincts withfirmnessanddelicacy.She isentirelylovable.

FirstEffortofZenith Players
"Rope,"aplaybyPatrick Hamilton,isstyledasacrime drama,butifwearelookingfor abriefdescriptiveterm,itwould bebettertocallitacrimemelodrama.Itwaspresentedinthe AssemblyHall,Pier-street,last nightbytheZenithPlayers,a newdramaticgroupcontrolled byMessrs.Hampton,Harveyand Quinn.
Theplay,fortunately,hada goodthirdact,whichcompensatedinlargemeasureforthetwo boringactswhichprecededit.I donotremembersittingforso longthroughaplaywhichhad solittleactioninitasemerged fromthefirsttwoactsofthis one.Theopeningscenedraggedoninterminablyindarkness, andwhateveratmosphericeffects weredesiredofitwerecompletelynullifiedbythemuffled speechdeliveredwithindifferent emphasisbytwounseenspeakers.Whenthelightsdideventuallygoupthesceneproceeded tobeoccupiedbyanindiscriminatecollectionofpersonswho, withonestartlingexception,contributednothingValuabletothe playatanystage.Withthe oneexceptionmentioned,they couldhaveallbeenleftoutofthe playwithoutdetrimenttoit
