SIR,-AneducationreceivedinCatholicschools,followedbythreeyears'experience ofeducationalestablishments providedbyourGovernment, haveledmetomakenoteson thesimilaritiesanddifferences, meritsanddemeritsofthese, thetwochiefinstrumentsfor childeducationinWesternAus tralia.

Iwishtopointoutthatour Churchhaswithinitsreacha marvellousopportunity, achance toenhanceitsplaceasasocial forceandtogaintheadmiration andesteemofeveryeducationally-mindedpersoninthecountry.

Catholicschoolsaretodayenjoyingconsiderableprosperity; thedaysofpioneeringandthe barkshedaregone.andour nunsandbrotherscancounton generoussupportinbuildingand oquippingprojects.

Furthermore,theyenjoythe benefitsofsmallclass,s(orat leasttheopportunitytokeep themsmall),andofconsiderable freedom,atleastinhigh..r grades,fromdictationasregards curriculaandsubjects.Opportunitiesandstudyingmusic,perhapsthegreatestofthearts,are alsofrequent,especiallyinconventschools.

Ithinkthatthosebenefits haveyettobefullyrealisedand exploitedbyCatholiceducators. Imentionedabovethatour buildingsaregenerallyadequate. Theyaresoinalmostevery case,butaretheyreallysuited totheirpurpose?Mostofthem arebuiltinanexpensiveand dubiousstyle,usuallyanextremelydullformofGothic archit,cture.Newerschools, 1 amgladtosee.followasimpler, moreelegant,andcertainly cheaperform.Themoneysaved onthissimplificationandbuildingcouldgreatlyextendschool libraries.eventoth,sprovision ofspecialroomsforquietstudy, andforspecialsubjects,suchas asartandthesciences.

MostCatholicclassroomshave anairofcomfortaboutthem; butisitnottruethatthereis alsomuchshoddirLss,notinactualmoney-providedluxury,but inmost-rainedandartistic taste?

Appreciationoftrueformsof beautyistodayregardedasan outcomeofsoundeducation.Exceptformusic,thereislittle evidenceofanyclAtireforthis inourschools.

Evenmusicneedssome straighteningout.MuchbeautifulsingingofGregorianchant isachievedbyourboysand girls.Forthe"secular"singing lessonsanything,apparently,will do,althoughgratifyinguseof thaexcellentsinginglessons givenontheradioismadein somecases.Surely,though,our singingteacherscanbridgethe gapbetweenGregorianchant andmodernsong!Therelation betweenthe"plainsong"andreal musicisneverrealisedbypupils, butthisrelationwouldbe broughthomeverysimply.Isit notanaturalstepfromGregory toPalestrina?Andthenceto BachandHandel,Mozartand Haydn? Asregardsthesubjectmat terofschoolinstruction,Imay saythatthejustrequirementsof theofficialcurriculumarecarriid outefficientlyinprimaryclasses.
