Wearepurposelyrefraining frompublishingnamesinthis issueofthoseconcernedbutit mightbeaswellforthem.especiallythenewlyelectedones,to realisethattheiractivitiesare wellknownandthattheywill canvassinvainforvotesifthey continuetofosterandsupporta ragwhoseaimandpurposeitto endeavourtobringdiscrediton theChurchtowhichsomanyof ourcitizensbelong.Wearenot goingtostandbyandseethese politiciansdrawingtheirsalaries frompublicfunds.towhichweas taxpayerssubscribe,iftheycontinuetoabusetheconfidenceof theirpeople.

MembersoftheStateService arealsomixedupinthisunsavourybusinessandareeven usingtheirofficetobringdiscreditorendeavouringtodoso bypublishingblatantlieson othermembersoftheStateservice.Weknowwhowasresponsibleforthepublicationofan articlecalumniatingcertainofficialsinoneofthebranchesofthe Stateserviceanarticlewhichhas beenreprintedandisbeingleft inparkedcarsaroundthecity area.Howcanthesepublicservantswhoaresupposedtosee thatafairdealisgiventoeverybodybetrustedinimportant officessincebytheirwritingsand viewstheyaresobigotednarrow mindedanddevoidofevenanelementarysenseofjusticeand truth.

Itisasadstateofaffairsbut alasatrueonethatifitwasnot fortheCatholicsupportitgets the"Rock"wouldnotbeableto exist.ThemajorityofProtestantsfeelashamedtohaveanythingtodowithsuchapublicationandwouldnotcountenance itsviews,ItwasaProtestant lady,Mrs.Fowler,whorecently petitionedtheMinisterinthe NewSouthWalesParliamentto "suppressimmediatelyafilthy journalthatisnauseousand offensivetoeverycleanminded citizen"andyetwehaveCatholicswhoregularlybuyit,more outofadistortedsenseofhumourthananythingelse,and thusgiveitthatnecessaryfinancialhelpwithoutwhichitwould havetoclosedownitspresses withinamonthoftwo.Ifthe "Rock"continuesitistothediscreditoftheseCatholicsthatitis abletodoso.NoCatholicshould buyitandnoCatholicshould patronisethoseshops,news-agenciesorBookDepotswhereitis forsale.

Wehopethatoneday,andthe soonerthebetter,oneofourown parliamentarianswilltakeasimilarstandonthismatterashas alreadybeentakenintheEa.steigh Statesandhavedeclaredanindecentandobscenepublicationa paperthatisbothmorallyoffensiveanddetrimentaltotheunderstandingandharmonywhich hasreignedforsolongamong thevariousChurchesintheWest.

There1,definiteneedforreformofasectionofthe newspaperindustry,butthatchangeofheartwillnothe broughtaboutbyrestrictivegovernmentalinterference, butunderpressureofpublicopinion.Itwouldcertainly beatragicdayforthelibertiesoftheaverageAustralian shouldthepressbecomemerelyaninstrumentofgovernmentpolicy.TheChurchhasnotbeentardyinrecognisingtheextenttowhichthewrittenwordmaybeapower ,,1disruptionorconstructioninthemodernworld.It wasinevitablethatSheshouldtakeactivestepstostem theevilandharnesstheresourcesofgoodinthismost powerfulofallpropagandistagencies.TheChurchrealises 'hatthemodern,secularistpress,lefttoitself,would eventuallyplungewholenationsintopaganism.Indeed, :vento-day,wereonetoacceptthecolumnsofevenreputablenewspapersascriteriaofthenation'scultureand religion,onewouldhavedifficultyinfindinganyindicationthattheyweretheproductofaChristianpeople.

Yettheworldisnotaspaganasitspress-though thereisgravedangerthatitmighteventuallybecomeso. ItisfoolishtothinkthatourCatholicpeopleareimmune fromtheevilinfluenceofthesecularpress.Dailypapers comeintoeveryCatholichome,andeveryonereads.Apart fromthefrequentunsavourysocialscandals,thereavr falseprinciplesandfalseidealsbeingmooteddaybyday, whichmighteventuallyleadtheunwaryandunlearnedto theirowndestructionTocounteracttheinsidiousinfluenceofthesecularpress,theChurchoffersthegood andwholesomereadingoftheCatholicpaper,whichever wandsforChristianprinciplesoflifeandconduct,and everdefendsthetruthagainstthefalsechargesofits enemies.TheHolyFatherhaseulogisedinburningwords theworkoftheCatholicpressintheworld.Itisoneofthe greatestforcesoffaithandmorality.Itistherightarm oftheChurch,andouronlybulwarkagainstthedeluge ofpaganisminourenlightenedage.

Thisyeart'helocalfootball showedavastlyimprovedstandard.Ourplaywaspatchy,but atitsbestextremelygood.We wereunluckynottoclinchthe Premiership,butintheGrand FinalCalingiriturnedonsome excellentplayinthelastquarter,andranoutwinners.

Throughouttheyeartheyhad playedhardandclean,andcleverly,andweofferourcongratulationswithoutstint.However, weshallbeafterthecupin1948.

OurownSportsDayresulted inaverysuccessfulAthletic Meeting.Individualperformancesweregood-average,enthusiasmranhigh,andthebearing oftheteamsinthemarch-past reflectedgreatcreditonthecaptains,PeterSmith.BillLessells. TrevorHodgkinandDesKelly. ThelatterwasSeniorChampion Athlete.IntheSchoolboyState Championshipswesecureda first,twosecondsandthree thirds.DesPriestlywonthe StateTitleintheunderseventeen880yds.

OurhockeyWa.sgood.Next yearwehopetoenterateamin theCountryWeekCompetitioq, andweshouldbehardtobeaf. Wehadnocompetitionbeyond theschoolintennisandhandball,andtheRifleClubdiscoveredfew.outstandingmarksmen.

TheChristianBrothersatthe TerracewerekindenoughtoarrangeatripupinAugustwith twofootballteams.Wewonboth gamesUnderFourteenandA Grade.WheninPerthinJune, weplayedtheTerracehockey andranoutfairlycomfortable winners,AttheAnnualAthletic MeetinginOctober,weannexed

theScottCupafteraverykeen struggle. Allthesemeetings wereenjoyable,andwehaveto thanktheBrothersandboysof theTerraceforfurnishingus withanopportunityforalittle inter-schoolsport,whichweso largelylack. OfficersandInstructorsofthe AirTrainingCorpsspokewarmlyoftheresponseofourCadets. Iconsideritimportantthatin timeofpeaceourschoolsdo somethingtoensurethatintime ofwarwehaveourproportion ofCatholicofficers.Non-Catholic officers,evenwiththebestwill intheworld,cannotbeexpected toappreciatethestorethata Catholicsoldierwillsetupon MassandtheSacraments.Iconfesstodisappointmentwiththe marksgainedbyCadetsinthe finalA.T.C.examinations.They couldandshouldhavebeenbetter. OldBoysofthelastfewyears representusattheUniversity ofW.Aorelsewhereinevery Facultyatthepresenttime savethatofArchitecture,Iam particularlyproudtorecordthe tineachievementofPatrickColeman,whowasherewithsomany ofyou.Atgraduationthis year,whenhisB.Sc.degreewas conferred,hewasannouncedas equalholderoftheLadyJames PrizeforNaturalScience,was awardedapost-graduateIlaekttt Scholarship,wontheEdward SimpsonPrizeforGeology,and wasthebestSciencegraduatein theW.A.Universityin1947. Wenormallydoverylittle inthewayofpara.:ling;achievement,soparents,friendsand Old!Boyswillwelcomethis chanceofnotingverycreditable examinationperformances.

Whileonscholasticmatters,I makeafewbriefobservations:

Firstly,Ideplorethedesire andtendencytodropLatin. Thistendencyisatonewith thegeneralmodernurgetojettisonwhatevercallsforprecision,accuracyandmentaleffort.Ifaboycan,atLeaving Certifyatestandard,handleintelligentlyapieceofLatin prose,hehasbehindhimasolid mentaldiscipleandisina positiontoadapthimselfrapidly tothedemandsofmostpositionswhereinhemayfindhimselfonleavingschool.Tome itseems.amostregrettable comedownwhenausefulsection oftheLawcourseisscrapped merelyonthegroundthatstudentscannotcopewithit,having noLatin.

Ihaveanotherpertinentremarktomake.Astheboyswell know,myfeelingsarerather explosiveregardingthetragic moderncomics.Iexceptmany oftheEnglishcomics;Iexcept paperslikethe'Champion," v;hichcontainssomegoodboys' reading; I except"Ginger Meggs,"whichiscloselyinthe traditionofC.J.DennisThat leavestibout98percent.for metocastigate,andIoughtto beabletosendashudderof revulsiondowneveryparental spinebyquotingthewiseold adage,"Aboybecomeswhathe reads,"whilesimultaneously holdingupforcontemplationalmostanyoneofthesecrude moderncomics.Wehaveagood libraryatschool,andtheboys areencouragedtouseit.I wouldaskforsimilarsolicitude whileboysareathome.Failing goodreadinghabitsnow,boys areunlikelylatertodomuch morethanreadtheSundayand eveningpapers,andAustralia's Sundayandeveningpapersare asymptomofnationaldecay.

Thirdly,youmayhavenoted, onperusingmagazineclass groupsyearbyyear,thatour averagenumberintheFirst Yearclassesisaboutsixty;the averageJuniorCertificateclass isabouttwenty-five;theaverage Leavingclassisabouthalfa dozen.Othercountrycolleges intheCommonwealthshowa similarfallingoff,butagainwe appeartostrikeitinmarked measure.Ihaveoftenobserved averypronounceddevelopment bothofintellectandofcharacteroverthosetwopost-Junior years,andaccordinglyregret mostkeenlythatapproximately two-thirdsofourJunior-class boysaredeniedthatopportunity.Whereboyshaveatleast averagetalent,Iurgetheircontinuanceatschoolthrough FourthandFifthYear,andI mentioninthisconnectionthe £30annualgranttoparentsof suchboys,iftheylivewhere thereisnoLeavingCertificate HighSchool.MightIaddthat IgetneartoapoplexywhenI

Finally,inthisreport,Icome towhatmusteverbeourmajor concern,viz.,thespiritualand moraltoneoftheCollege.Concerningthestudyandpractice cerningthestudyandpractise oftheFaith,Ifeelwecan franklyclaimthattheSenior boysleavingschoolareequippedwithmuchmorethana penny-catechismknowledgeof theirreligion,andshouldhave aprofoundandinformedregard fortheChurchandherteachings.Iamwellawarethatthere isoftena,greatgapbetween beliefandpractice,andwiehave inconsequenceaimedtoweld thetwotogether.Itismyview thatrelativeinfluencesforgood orillaretentooneinfavour ofthehome,andparentsmight examinetheirresponsibilityin thematterofexample,aswe doours.Aschoolcansupplement,notsupersede.

Theyformedthenucleusofthe ChildrenofMarySodality,and cheerfullysurrenderedpartof recreationweekbyweekto maintainthispracticeofdevotiontoOurLady'shonour.The Sodalityhasdonegreatergood thanwecanknow.

Therearemanytowhom 1 mustmakeacknowledgement. TheBrothersoftheStaffhave beenmostco-operativeanddevotedunderconditionsofwork thatwouldmakeagoodunionist hudder.Ishallnotlabourthat point,aswemaysafelytakeit forgranted.Weseemtobe mostblessedinourfriends.The peopleofthedistrict-unfortunatelythinningoutsomuch-havealwayscheerfullyrallied roundtoassistwithchoreson SportsDayandatothertimes.
