GeneralMacArthur'sprivate conversationrevealsthatthefrequentreferencestoChristianityinhispublicstatementsare nomerewindow-dressing.He isintenselysincereinviewing theoccupationprimarilyasa tremendousopportunitytogive "apracticaldemonstrationof Christianideals."

Hemakesnosecretofhis cherishedobjectivetoimplant aChristiandemocracyinJapan. Hefeelsthatalreadyamental andmoralclimatethatisessentiallyChristianhasbeencreated here.
Heisconvincedthatonlya democracybasedonChristian principleswilllastinJapan,or anywhereelse.Hecannotsee howsuchChristianfruitsas justice, charityandrespectfor humandignityoneverylevel cancomewithoutthegrowthot Christianityitself,
Itisknownthatsomeofthe menandwomenworkingunder GeneralMacArthurareupsetby hisfrankstatementsthatdemocracyhasitsbestsafeguard inChristianity.Theyaskit thiswillnotoffendBuddhists, Shintoistsandatheists.

Youask:
"Whatdoyouthinkofmiracles"?
A.:Amiracleisahappening whichwecanknow,andwhich cannothavebeenproducedby merenaturalagency,butwhich mustbeattributedtothedirect powerofGod.Thus,forexample,theResurrectionofChrist fromthedead,theraisingof Lazarusfromthedead,theinstantaneouscureofthetenlep- ers-thesearehappeningswhich cannotbeeffectedbynatural agencies.Astheyarebrought abouttogivetestimonytothe truthofChrist'sclaims,they aregoodactions,doneforaworthycause.Andso,theymust beattributedtoGod.Amiracle is,therefore,somemarvellous happening,whichisundeniable becauseittakesplacebeforethe eyesofmen.Thus,theraising ofLazaruscannotbedenied,and couldnothedeniedbytheJews. Themainhistoricconsiderationswhichestablishthetruth ofChrist'srecordedmiraclesare asfollows:

OurLordsaidtothem:"If1 donottheworksofMyFather, thendonotbelieveMe.Butif Ido,thoughyouwillnotbelieveMe,believetheworks." ThePhariseeswerecaught.
