(ByaPastDirector.)InthehistoryofthefoundationandearlyyearsoftheNew NorciaMission,writtenbyBishopeSalvado,itsfounder,there isnopagesobrightasthatin whichhetellsoftheopeningof theOrphanageandSchoolfor NativeBoys.Likeallmissionariesineveryland,Father Salvadoandhiscompanion, FatherSerra,hadverysoonrealisedthatthehopeoftheirMissionlaywiththechildren.We can,therefore,understandtheir unboundedjoyatbeingableto makeastartintratdirection. Theyhadnotbeeninthebush quitetwoyears.Theyhadgone throughagreatdealandhadaccomplishedmuch.Ofthisthey feltsurewhentheydiscovered thatthenatives,sodeeplyattachedtotheirchildren,were preparedtopartwiththemat leasttotheextentrequiredfor theirupbringingaccordingto theideasofthemissionaries.
Astartwasmadewiththe boys.Arough-and-tumblehut, dignifiedbythetitlesofOrphanageandSchool,hadbeen putupforthepurposeand christened"St.Mary's."Very appropriatelytheFeastofthe ImmaculateConceptionwas chosenfortheinaugurationof thismostimportant,ifhumble, establishment.ButletBishop Salvadotellthestory:
"TheeighthdayofDecember, 1847,"hesays,"shallalwaysbe rememberedbytheAustralian
SofarBishopSalvado.Now forafewsidelightsonthesubsequenthistoryofthisInstitutionsodeartohisheart.One ofthethreefoundationboys, andtheveryfirstnativetobe baptisedatNewNorcia,accompaniedFatherSerratoEurope inFebruary,1848,butsuccumbedtotheclimaticconditionsof theOldWorld.
When,inJanuaryofthefollowingyear,FatherSalved() sailedforEuropeintheinterestsoftheMission,hetookwith himtwootherboysfromtheOr phanage,whomheintendedfor themonasticlife.Thesetwo wereclothedintheBenedictine habitbynolessapersonage thanHisHolinessPopePiusIX, andwereplacedinaBenedictine MonasteryinItaly.Theypromisedwellforthefuture,but, unfortunately,thebrighterof thetwodiedinthatMonastery in1853,andtheotherwas broughtbacktoAustraliain May,1855,hishealthseriously undermined,anddiedatNew NorciainAugustofthesame year.
Needlesstosay,nomoreattemptshavesincebeenmade alongthoselines.St.Mary's Orphanagehasalwaysbeen goodenoughforournativeboys. Heretheyhavealwaysreceived alltheeducationtheyhave needed.Herealltheirwants, bothspiritualandtemporal,have alwaysbeenprovidedforbythe Benedictinemonks.
ofapriest-monktotheschool madeitpossibletogivethe boasthemaximumofschooling whichwasfixedattwohoursin themorningandanothertwoin theafternoon,exclusivefromthe timeallottedtotheirtrainingin music,vocalandinstrumental.
Since1930thisgoodworkhas beensharedbytwopriestsfrom theAbbey. Alay-Brotherat-

aboriginesasoneofhappymemory,sinceonthatday,dedicated totheImmaculateConceptionof theMotherofGod,theOrphanage('College,'BishopSalvado callsit)ofNewNorciaforthe sonsofAustralianaborigines wasopenedandplacedunder herspecialprotection.Asthe firstfruitsofaheavenlyblessing,threeyoungnativeboys wereonthatdayreceived,and they,freelyforsakingthecorm panyoftheirparentsandwith thelatter'sconsent,remained withusfromthatday;their examplebeingsoonfollowedby others.Thebettertoimpress onthemindsofthenativesthe solemnityofthatoccasion,we gavethemtworationsoffood, onimmedatelyafterthesolemn receptionofthethreeboys,and theotherintheafternoon;a customwhichwefollowedfrom that(layon,thankstotheabundantharvestwehadgathered."
"Withinamonththreemore boyswerereceived.Verysoot theapplicationsfarexceeded theavailableaccommodation, Thetransformationofthese boysmusthavebeenveryrapid, tojudgebyBishopSalvado's impatiencetospeakofit,for evenbeforementioningthedoublingofthedailyration,he breaksoutintothesebeautiful words:"Oh,howgreatwasthe consolationweexperiencedwhen wehadasouraltarboysthose sameboyswhoalittlewhilebe, forewereinthedarknessof death;whoalittlewhilebefore usedtorunawayfromthe sightofanEuropeanasfrom awildbeast Consolationsof thiskindmakeamissionaryforgetallthelaboursanddangers ofhisapostolicministry,they evenmakehimfeelthathepays toosmallapriceforsogreat andspecialgraces."
'thisgoodworkwasinevitably suspendedwhileFatherSalvado wasawayinEuropefrom1849 to1853.Andevenafterhisreturn,hecoulddonexttonothing forhisboysforthenextsix years,because,althoughhewas nowaBishop,hewasnotin chargeoftheMission.Itwas onlyin1859,followinghisappointmentassoleSuperiorthat liecouldinfusenewlifeintothe half-deadbodyoftheMissionin generalandtheBoys'Orphanage inparticular.Nowhewasnot alone.Hehadalargenumber ofhelpers,Benedictinemonks likehimselfandlikewiseanimatedbytheApostolicspirit.This goestosaythatthetrainingof thenativeboyscouldnowbeattendedtomostthoroughly.In theschoolroom,intheworkshops,inthefields,thoseboys hadthemonksastheirconstant mentors,whobywordandexamplehelpedthemtobecome usefulmenandgoodChristians.
Andso,withoutinterruption from1859to1947.Withoutinterruption,butnotwithoutalterationinthesystemwhenthe timesrequiredit.Thusthefirst twogenerationsofschoolboys weregivenmoreofthesortof lifetowhichtheirforefathers Ladbeenaccustomed.The schoolhourswerereducedtoa minimum-twohoursaday-so astohaveamaximumofoutdoorlife,Butattheopeningof thenewcenturyanalteration wasdue.Theboysbroughtinto theOrphanageatthistimewere forthemostpartthegrandchildrenofnativesbornand rearedattheMission.They could,therefore,bekeptattheir desksalittlelongerthantheir predecessors.Littlebylittle theschoolhourswerelengthened until,in1924,theappointment
tendstotheboys'materialwellbeing.Outsideschoolhoursthe boysaretrainedtoacquire habitsofindustrybyoccupying theminsuitableworkathome nodabouttheMission,while thoseboyswhohavereachedthe schoolagelimitareemployed inthevariousdepartmentsof theBenedictineAbbeyunderthe lay-Brothers.Sportisalso givendueattentionatSt.Mary's Orphanage.Theboys'remarkableaptitudeforcricket,footballandswimmingiswellknown Mentionwasmadeaboveof theboys'traininginmusic,vocal andinstrumentau,butthisisa topicthatcannotbedismissed withjustamention.Oflate years,thankstothepainstaken bythepresentDirectorofSt. Mary's(Rev.FatherHelladius Ros,O,S.B.),ournativechoristershaveinvariablydeserved theunstintedpraiseofvisitors toNewNorciawhohaveheard themsingingeitherintheproCathedralonspecialoccasions asanintegralpartofthemonasticchoir,orintheirmusical entertainmentsathome.
Morerecentlystill,theboys furnishedamostpleasantsurprisebytherapidandefficient mannerinwhichtheyresponded totheeffortsofthesaidFather Rosandanassistantpriestteachertotrainthemintoa brassband.Theirperformances inthiscapacityduringtheNew NorciaCentenaryCelebrations lastyearwereverycreditableindeed,andleftnodoubtinthe audiencesastowhatthese youthfulplayersmightachieve withregularandpersevering coaching.
Butitmustberemarkedhere thatneitheraschoristersnoras instrumentalistscanournative boysbesaidtoappearinanew role.Abrassbandthatbe-
camefamousfarbeyondthe boundariesoftheMissionwas formedasfarbackas1870and flourisheduntilitsorganiserand master,oneofthelay-Brothers, redin1898.Somehow,itvanishedsoonafter.Similaris thestoryofastringband,organisedanddirectedbythesame' elan.Aschoristers,theboys' hoirsanginthechurchasearly as1865,andcontinuedtodoso occasionallyuntilafewyears afterthebandshaddisappeared. Butiftheystoppedsinging. heyhaveneverceasedtogive invaluableserviceasaltarboys. Asabuilding,StMary'sOrphanagehasgonethroughseveralstages,keepingstepwith thelestoftheMission.The uriignalrough-and-tumblelittle hutgavewayin1860tomuch larger,thoughhardlymorepretentiousquarters.Tothese wereadded,afewyearslater,a brickcottagetoserveaskitchenanddining-room,theslab andclaystructurebeingreservedfordormitoriesandschoolroom.Stilllater,butwithin thepastcentury,aseparate schoolroom,alsoofbrickand mortar.wasbuiltadjoiningthe
dining-room.Thislastbuild ingisstillextantinfrontofSt. tlephonsus'College,bywhichit hasbeenputtodifferentuses.
TherestofoldSt.Mary'swas demolishedin1924,following theinmates'transfertotheir present,palatialnewhome. BuiltbythelateBishopTorres in1914,thiswasnotquiteready foruseatthetimeofhisdeath. inOctoberofthesameyear. ThepresentLordAbbot(Dr. Cataln)sawtoitscompletion, and,onJuly13,1924,theHon. Minister,Mr.Hickey,athis Lordship'sinvitation,officially openedthenewhomeforthenativeboys.
Sincethenmanyatimethe remark:"Toogoodfornatives!" hasbeendroppedbyvisitorsto theInstitution.But,weneed notexplain,thisopinionisnot. andneverhasbeen,sharedby theBenedictineMonks,whofor thelasthundredyearshaveministeredwithunfailingsolicitude totheneedsofsoulandbodyof theselittleonesofChrist,bearingalwaysinmindthat:"A? longasyoudidittooneofthese Myleastbrethren,youdiditto Me."

AtthemeetingoftheUniversitySenateheldlastMonday, theRt.Rev.MonsignorMcMahon,M.A.,Ph.D.,H.Dip.Ed., wasappointedamemberofthe newlyestablishedFacultyof Education,whichwilldirecta four-years'courseinthetheory andpracticeofteachingleading toaDegreeinEducation.This professionalqualificationwillbe opentoallstudentsattheUniversity,whethertheyintend teachinginStateorprivate schools.TheDiplomaofEducationisnowgrantedtograduatesafteroneyear'sstudyfollowingtheirdegreecourse,

Accordingtoapressreport emanatingfromNewYork,1,000 doctorsofthatcityhavesigned apetitionaskingtheStateLegislaturetolegalisevoluntary deathforthosewhosufferfrom incurableillness.Thepetition, aftersayingthatmanyincurablesnowseekreleasebysuicide,adds:"Othersaresecretly putoutoftheirmiserybyrein tiveswhocannolongerstand thesightoftheirpainandare willingtorenderthemselves liabletothepenaltyofmurder." thanasiaSociety,whichdemands thateuthanasiabe"broughtinto theopenandsafeguardedagainst abuse."Subsequently,aMelbcurnedoctor,andamemberof theFederalCouncilofthe B.M.A.statedthatincurable ratientswhowishedtodie shouldbelegallyentitledtoask theirdoctorstoputthemto death."Itisquiteobviousto doctors,"Dr.Colvilleisreportedassaying,"whoseeagreat amountofsuffering,thatwe shouldhaveit(euthanasia)provided."
Noweuthanasia,ormurderon medicalgrounds,isanabominationagainstthenaturallawjustasmuchasbirth-prevention orsuicide.Butitisrather morestartlinginitsstarkness.
Thepalpableeffectsofcontraceptionarenotevidenttothe sensesinthesameway.One dotsnotremarkupontheabsence ofchildrenuntiltheirdearth threatensanation'sexistence. Suicideisalwaysshocking,but itsfrequencyandtheusualpresumptionofmentalinstability tendtomitigateitsrawness.But lonumberoffancywordsorof medicalbluffcandisguisethe grotesquenatureofeuthanasia. Itisliterallyproposedtokilloff millionsofhumanbeings,not becausetheyhavecommitted anycrime,butmerelybecause, acingchronicallyill,theyhave ecomeanuisanceandanexpense.This,then,isthedefeatistendofmedicalresearch;the knellofhumanhope;thetermof humancompassion.Patience, magnanimity,evenpityhaveno 'daceinthismonstrousconception.
Oneofthechiefpointsmade iythemedicalprofessioninits .fightagainstnationalisationhas oeenthatthesocialisationof medicinewouldmeananendto ,nesystemofthefamilydoctor, andwouldbreakupthatspirit Jfconfidenceinone'sfavourite physicianwhichissoimportant apsychologicalfactorinthe artofhealing.Nowifthisis ,rueofamerepoliticalarrangement,withhowmuchmoreforce ,,iustitapplytoasystemwhereinthedoctorlegallyhasthe poweroverlifeanddeath.With whattrepidationwouldapatient .vhohadbeenfeelingillovera .ongperiodapproachadoctor whomightrecommendhisextermination?Becausethedoctiirs hadbeenmadeexecutioners,peoplewouldrightlyshunthemfor featofbeingconvictedofthe capitalcrimeofhavinganincurabledisease.Surelythevery mentionofincurableillness comesoddlyfromthemedical profession.Itisnotsomany earsagowhenasimpleappendixmeantadeathsentence. Surelythespiritofresearchis _oatsolethargicandunprogressivethatitwilladmitalimitto theenormousadvancesmadein medicalresearchinourgeneration!
Ofcourse,theeuthanasiastswill hastentoassuremethattheir proposalsareofapurely"voluntary"character. Towhich1 replysuccinctly:"Rubbish!"For onceapersonischronicallyill, beforehewillconsenttohismurder,hewillnaturallywanttobe quitecertainofthediagnosis.It willbeafield-dayforspecialists, andthepatientwillnormallybe athislastgaspbeforehewilladmitthepropositionthatheisincurablyill.Thiswillbethebig momentforthedeath-controllers. Whenamanisrackedandweak withpain,hispowersoflogic diminishedandconfused,hisfeel-

Abulletinissuedrecentlyby theCommonwealthStatistician onAustralianfinancerevealed thatin1944-45therewere195 residenttaxpayersearningabove £15,000perannum,and304earningabove£10,000.Intheother scale,thenumberoftaxpayers earning£500ayearorlesswas 1,740,477.Nowintheolddays onemighthavewelcomedthose figuresasindicatingthatthe richwerehavingtheirwings clippedinfavourofamoreequitabledistributionofwealth.The facts,however,arequiteotherwise,forwelearnthatthe2,049,694taxpayerspaid£783,849,000 intaxes,andthatthelowincomegrouppaid£15,950,000.So that,sofarfromindicatingthat incomeorpropertyisbecoming niorewidespread,thefigures eemtoshowthateveryoneis workingunremittinglyforthe Government,andthattheir moneyisgoinglargelytothe crtationandupkeepofaneverincreasingbureaucracy.The rateofdirecttaxationis,inmy opinion,scarcelyajustdebt,and whenitiscalculatedwiththeindirecttaxationleviedonahundredandoneitemsofdailyuse, itamountstoausurioustyranny.
Thestatisticsofincome,however,meanlessthannothing whenviewedinthelightofCatholicsocialideals,Moneyis notpropertyintheCatholic sense.Amanmayearn£20,000 ayearassomebody'semployee. andbenotasfreeeconomically asasmallorchardistearning 4:500ashisownmaster.Irealisethatitisinceasinglydifficulttotalkofeconomicfreedom, becausethewatersofthought havebeenhopelesslymuddiedby thecantaboutsecurity,andby thesheeradorationofmoney. ButletitbesaidthattheCatholicChurchregardscapitalism asadiseasedgrowthnotonly becauseitadvocatesandpractisestheconcentrationoffinancialandeconomicpower,butbecauseitreducesthecreative powersofmantoservitudeofa mechanisticanddehumanising type,"Manisbornfree,yetis hefoundeverywhereinchains." Man,bynaturerationalandcapableoffreechoice,iscondemned almosteverywhereinthemodernworldtoworkinhisdaily lifeasifhewereanautomaton, atool,a'hand."Thisconditioniscalledproletarianism.
Sothatnomoneycancompensatetheworkerforhislossof economicliberty.Anditisthis goalofCatholicsocialthought whengrowsdimmeranddimmer astheclosely-organisedSociaa istStategrowsdailyinstature Itmaybepossibletomakethis slaveStatesoefficienteventually thateveryonewillreceivevery highwages,whileatthesame timeprices,rents,etc.,willbe keptverylow.Butitwillnever

TheReligiousLifeismost justlycalledayokebecauseitis diametricallyopposedtothat modeoflivingwhichregulates itselfbythesimpleimpulseof ,ature,thatisthespiritofthe world-loveofease,comforts, ndependence,richesandsensual sleasures,andallthesethings repainfultohumannaturejust astheyokeispainfultothe )eastofburden.
TheReligious,then,mustnot ookuponhimselfashisown, butasGod's-Hemustliveun'ertheyokeofJesusChristthatishemustleadasupernaturallifeandliketheapostle considerasfilthandtrampleunderfootwhateverhumannature lovesandadores,thatisriches, comforts,independenceandsensualpleasures-andhemustseek :indembracewithJesusChrist whatevertheworlddreadsand holdsinabhorrence,suchas poverty,self-denial,mortification,humility,sufferingandsubjection,inawc,rd,theCross.
