OnMondaytheRedemptorist Fathersreceivedacablegram fromNewZealandannouncing thesuddendeathofFather McLoughlininAuckland,while givingaMissionthere.
FatherEdwardwastheyoungestofthreebrotherswhobecame RedemptoristMissioners,twoof whomarestillactivelyengaged onmissionworkinIreland.
Hewasordainedin1917,and cametoAustraliaafewyears afterwards.HetaughtTheologyforsomeyearsintheRedemptoristStudendateatPennant Hills.ThenhebecameattachedsuccessivelytotheMission staffofeveryRedemptorist HouseintheProvinceofAustralia.
Inadditiontobeinganeloquentandzealousmissioner,he conductedRetreatsfortheclergy, BrothersandSistersinalmost everydioceseofAustraliaand NewZealand.
HewasstationedattheMonastery,NorthPerth,ontwooccasions-from1936-38,whenhe wasDirectorofbothConfraternities,theHolyFamilyandOur LadyofPerpetualSuccourand St.Alphonsus,andagain,after hisreturnfromIrelandin1939, tillhistransfertoNewZealand in1943.
Therehesinceremainedonactiveservice,andwasfoundathis postofdutywhenhisMasterunexpectedlycalled,tobestowupon himtherewardofthegoodand faithfulservant.R.I.P.

Inhisbook,"TheRiseofChristianity,"thisprelatedebunks notonlytheVirginBirthof Christ,butalsohisveryDeity andResurrectionfromthedead. Miraclesarerelegatedtothe abyssofmythologyandsuperstition,andheaddsthatbeliefin thegeneralresurrectionofthe bodymustberejected.

beimputedtosuchunworthymotivesascowardice,thedesirenot toalienatevotes,ortosometemporaryadvantagetheymayseem togainfromCommunistsupport.
Butwhatcanbesaidinall conscienceofthesilence-the seeminglyimpenetrablesilenceoftheCatholicpolitician?Even wheresuchaoneistotallyun' educatedintheformalsense,he notonlyknowsthefactsbetter thanthematerialist,butherealisestheirimplicationathousandtimesmoreprofoundly,He hasheardoftheRedmenaceat school,fromthepulpit,andincessantlyfromtheCatholicPress. Yetrarelyishisvoiceliftedin thehallsoflegislationtodehouncethatmonstrousevilwhich threatensnotalonehispersonal faithbuthispoliticalpartyand hiscountry.Cravenindeedis theCatholicwhowillplaceparty loyaltyoreventhesecurityof hisParliamentaryseatbeyonu hisclaimswhenevidentlyhetheplainneedofprofessing knowsabsolutelynothingofthe latestresultsofscientificresearch itarcheologicalandbiblical studies. Itwouldtaketoomuchtime gothroughhisworkpointby point.Letus,however,state .hatthereneverhasbeen,nor cantherebe,anytrueconflict aetweenscienceandfaith.Both areondifferentplanes,andas isithisone,emanatingfromone God,therecanneverbeanyreal differencebetweenthem.
Itdoesseemstrangethatsome bishopscanbehauledbefore civilcourtsfortransgressingliturgicalrubricsandbelievingin age-oldChristiandoctrines,and otherscanbelieveandpropagate doctrineswhicharemanifestly anti-Christian,andstillbeallowedtocontinueintheirministry.
Allwecansayis:"ThankGod thatChristhasfoundedHis Churchupontherock,forinHis ownwords,"Ahousedivided amongstitselfmustsurelyfall."
Thesponsorsoftheplanseem tohavethoughtofeverything.It isawondertheydidnotinclude freelegalserviceandagiltframeddecree"nisi."
Godhelpthepoormisguided peoplewhoarewillingsotopros- titutetheirloveforafewmiserablepounds,andGodforgive thesponsorsofsucharevolting ideatoattractacuriositysmittencrowd.
Weareassuredthattheservicewillbeconductedaccording tothereligiousbeliefsofthe contractingparties.Whynot gothewholewayandhavea purelypaganceremonywinding upwithabacchanalia.Sucha pagansettingwouldbetheonly fitaccompanimenttosucha paganidea.
Whenoureveningcontemporaryreported,duringtheweek, thesubstanceofMr.D.M.Jackson'sattackonCatholicpoliticians(madeovertheMelbourne CatholicBroadcastHour)itmust havesoundedaresponsivechord inthemindsofmanythoughtful Catholics.Foritis,afterall, atypicallyProtestantnotionthat religionisapersonalandprivate affair.Therootcauseofsocial disorderwasbroughtaboutpreciselywhenitbecamepossibleto "departmentalise"lifeinthe sensethatreligioncouldbedivorcedfromtheotheractivities ofliving.Simplificationsare mostlydangerous,butitdoesno greatviolencetothetruthtoassertthattheburdenofallthe socialEncyclicalsofthePopesis theimperative'necessityofintegratingreligionwitheveryaffair oflifeifasaneandChristian socialorderistoberestoredto theworld.Howevertruesuch viewsmayhavebeenwhenthey werepropoundedbyPopeLeo XIII.overhalfacenturyago, theyarereiteratedinourdays withthevoiceofdoombythe SovereignPontiffs.
Neverinhistorywasthere suchperilfortheChristianfaith andforthecivilisationwhichit chieflycreated.Ineverynation underheaventhereisaninternalenemy,plausibleinitsidealism,ruthlessbeyondmeasurein itsoperations,andsatanicinits
zeal,whichaimsquitesimplyto down-razepolitical,economic, culturalandreligiousinstitutions inblood,andtorearintheir steadthetowerandthetemple ofKarlMarx.Everybodywho knowsanythingknowsthe strengthoftheCommunist movement,andsomethingofits impenetrativesuccess.ButCatholicsknowitbestofall.They werefirstinthefieldinexposingitstruenatureandaimsata timewhenitseemedverysmall beerfromapracticalp6intof view.
Theorgansofpublicopinion arealivetotheperilinadetachedkindofmanner,Governments,andespeciallyCanada andtheUnitedStates,areconsciousofthemenaceinanalmostfrenziedfashion.Butthe AustralianGovernmentmust surelyhavesetaworldrecord forapathyatatimewhenthe LabourPartyiswhite-antedto theheartwiththeRedtermite. Theuneducated,secular-minded politiciancouldnotbeexcused inourdayforinadvertenceto theimminentcrisiswhichthe Marxistadvancehasforced,becauseintheheadlinesofthe papersattentionisfocusseddaily onthethreattoGreece,onthe instabilityofFrance,onthe pendingrevolutioninItaly,and onMoscow'sinsufferableinsolenceatLakeSuccess.That suchmendonotspeakout may.
Christiandoctrinewhereitis challengedeveninhisownpoli- ticalranks.Thereisafalse andevilprudencewhichisalmost asbadasopenapostasy.
Mr.JacksoninMelbourneremarkedverypertinentlythatCatholicpoliticians"canbevery eloquentaboutthedangersand evilsofCommunismwhenspeak- ingatCommunionbreakfasts andgatheringsoffellow-Catholics.Buttheybecomesuddenly dumbinpublicplaceswherethey shouldspeakasChristiansholdinghighresponsibleoffice."Certainlythereareoccasions(and theyarerecurringwithincreasingfrequency)whenthesilence oftheCatholicpolitiancannot unfairlybeconstrueasassent tosomethingwhichheisknown privatelytoabhor.
Thiskindofspiritualschizophreniaisverydifficulttounderstandandimpossibletoexplain.
Amancannotbeofoneopinion inhisprivateconscienceandof anotherinhispublicoffice.The Catholicpoliticianisbound,like everyCatholic,toprofesshis faithopenly,whenGod'shonour, hisownorhisneighbour'sspir- itualgoodrequiresit.Andsilenceinaseriousiaueisonall fourswithpublicdenialofthe Faith.Nopleaofloyaltyto partycancarryweightagainst hisprimarydutytoGodandto theChurch.Why,eventhe NaturalLawdemandsthathe placethecommongoodabove partypolitics.Whileitisnot universallytruethatCatholic politiciansletdowntheChurch andtheChristiancause(there beingsomenotableexceptionsin thisStateonsuchissuesasdivorceandcontraception),there issufficientlackofpublicChristianforthrightnesstocause scandaltotheCatholiccommunityatlargeandtoinduceevils whichmightbepreventedormitigatedbyafrankandfearless wordspokenattherighttime.

Protestantismis'nowreapingthelogicalandbitter fruitofitsprimitivefaith-without-good-worksdoctrine. Thereisanessentialandvitalinterdependencebetween beliefandmorals,andwhereasupernaturalfaithissappeditwillnotbelongbeforethestructureofmoralbehaviourbeginstocrumble.Itisimpossibletojudgeof thespiritualconditionoftheaveragechurch-going,Protestant,butitisfairtoinferthathewillhenobetter thanhisleaders.Andonbothscores-faithandmoralsitisasaclbutpatentfactthatmanyofthehighestdifnitariesofProtestantismareinrevoltagainsttheNatural LawandChristiantradition.Twooutstandingexamples werepublicisedinthePressduringtheweek.TheAnglicanBishopofBirmingham(Dr.Barnes)wasinhis usualformofdenyingmostofthefundamentalChristian doctrines,whileretainingtheofficeandemolumentsofa bishop.Heneednotdelayusfor,asDr.Garbettremarked,noonewouldtreathimseriouslywereitnot forhispastoraloffice.TheMethodistBishopofNew York(Dr.Oxnam)wasadvocatingbirth-prevention,and indoingsoattackedtheCatholicpositiononthemorals ofmarriage.
ItisnoteworthythatDr.Oxnamwasaddressinga meetingarrangedbythePlannedParenthoodAssociation. Itmayalsobewelltoremarkinpassingthattheplans ofthemoderncosmicdesignersareallformulatedbythemselvesforothers,suchassterilisation,euthanasia,etc.In thequestionofmarriage,however,theprimarypurpose ofwhichisthepro-creationofchildren,itmightbe thoughtthatGod'splanforhumanlife,manifestedclearlythroughtheNaturalLaw,wouldreceivesomeconsiderationifnotfirstpriority.Butitwasnotso.Godand commonsensewereamongthe"also-rans."Dr.Oxnam, althoughheattackedtheCatholicattitude,didnotbother toacquainthimselfwithit,forhespokeofthe"Roman Catholicinsistenceoncontinenceastheonlyvirtuousmethodofspacingchildren."Thisiswilfulmisrepresentation,astheChurchpermitstheuseofthe'so-called"safe period"forsufficientreason.ButDr.Oxnamwasnot chieflyconcernedwithmoralsatall,butwith"spacing." Heinformedhishearersthatthe"normal"family shouldbecomposedof3-6children.Thebearingof20 childrenwascondemnedbytheBishopas"sinful."
Itisremarkablehowmodernchurchmenandintellectualscancontinuetoregardpregnancyasadiseaseata timewhenthedemocracies'fallingbirth-ratesthreaten theireconomicproductionandtheirpowerofdefence,to saynothingoftheirmoralintegrity.InviewoftheBishop'sdistortions,itmaybewelltorepeatthattheCatholicChurchcompelsnomarriedcoupletohavechildren iftheyhavegoodreasonstheymayrestricttheirfamily bynaturalmeans,suchascontinenceortheuseofthe "safeperiod."ButneitherCatholicsnoranyoneelse ispermittedwantonlytointerferewithnaturalprocesses. Weareinfavourof"plannedparenthood,"providedthe workingoutoftheplanislefttoGod,operatingthrough nature.Thenotionthatchild-birthisinimicaltohealth isafictiondeniedalikebymedicineandexperience.The bishopcouldhavebeenbetteremployedinconstructive measures,suchasprovidingmorepre-natalandpost-natal careformothers,morehelpinthehome,andmore.financialassistance,thaninpropoundingquestionable"scientific"theories.Hisclaimthatcontinenceinmarriageleads tobrokenhomesisnotborneoutbyexperience.Itissexualexcessandtheperversionofnaturewhichleadtothe destructionofthatmutualrespectwhichisthebasisof Christianlove.

The Catholic Churchisnothingifsheisnota missionaryChurch.Hervery existenceistheresultofadivine missionaryexpedition-GodsendingHisonlybegottenSontoredeemandsavethehumanrace. Andso"theWordwasmade fleshanddweltamongstus."For thethreeyearsofHispubliclife, HemadetheHolyLandHismissionfield.HecalledHistwelve apostlestogether,Hegathered HisdisciplesroundaboutHim. HeestablishedHisChurch,and tothefoundationmembersof theChurchasHislastwilland testamentHebequeathedthe divinecommand,"Gointothe wholeworldandpreachtheGospeltoeverycreature."That commandcannotbeignored. God'splanmustbecarriedout. Thereistobenoexception,no distinctionofrace,nobarrierof colour.Hecametoredeemthe world.AllmenmustbeinformedofHissalutarymessageor redemption.TheCatholicChurch isthetrueChurchestablishedby JesusChristHimself.Itmust beuniversal,becauseitalonecan provideasoundbasisforcivilisation,italonecanprovidea civilisationbasedontheEternal Truths,onthelawsofGod,the Creator,theRedeemer,theJudge oftheuniverse.Inherdoctrinesandinherteachingsthe Churchhasthesolutionofthis world'sproblems;inherkeeping shehasthewordsofeternallife. Therecanbenorealpeace,security,tranquillityorhappiness inthisvaleoftears,untilthe nationsoftheworldareunited "inoneFoldunderoneShepherd."ThatisthegoaltowardswhichtheMissioncrusade isstriving.
Nearly2,000yearshaveelapsed sinceChristauthorisedHis apostlestogoforthandconvert theworld.Downthroughthe centuriesthehistoryofthe ChurchhasbeenasagaofMissionarysacrifice.Nocountryin theworldhasescapedtheattentionofapostolicpriestsandnuns.
ThegreatreligiousOrders,the Jesuits,theBenedictines,the Franciscans,theDominicans,all haveheededthewordsofOur Saviour,andarelabouringvaliantlytoestablishtheCrossof Christasthestandardofthe world.SovereignPontiffshave repeatedlystressedtheimportanceoftheMissions,andthrough allagesanunfailingattempt hasbeenmadetoextendthe KingdomofChrist.Yetitis withsaddenedheartsthatwe mustadmitthatthevastmajorityofmenarestilloutside thetrueChurch.Onlyonefourthoftheworld'spresentpopulationaccepttheCatholicChurch astherocksolidandunshakeablebuiltuponthePrinceofthe Apostles.Thereisstillmuch tobedone.Atthepresenttime weaverageabouthalfamillion conversionsayear.Atthat rateitwouldtake2,000yearsto conquerforChristthe1,000millionnon-Christianswhoareinthe worldto-day.Itisadistress-
inganddepressingthoughtto realisethat40millionpagans diesannuallywithouteverhaving heardthenameofGod.
Mydearbrethren,itisrelated inthetraditionallifeofSt.Patrick,thatasayoungmanhe heardthevoiceofhispeople callingtohim,tocomebackto them,toliveamongstthem,to teachthemthewordofGod. Voicesarecallingtoeachand everyoneofyou,pleadingwith ahauntinginsistencethatyou awakefromyourlethargiccomplacencyanddoyourpartto helpilluminatetheirdarkness, andenlightentheirunderstanding.Itisanappealwhich youcannotresist,againstwhich youcannothardenandsteel yourhearts.Itissuesforth fromthelipsoftheSaviour Himself,"Gointothewhole worldandpreachMyGospelto everycreature;"itechoesback withaccusinginsistencefromthe gallantbandofself-sacrificing missions!),priestsandnuns ihioughouttheuniverse;itreechoeswithreproachfulinsistencefromthenumberlesspagans whothroughamazeofsuperstitionandconfusionareseeking theWay,theTruth,andthe Life.Areyoucontenttoremaindeaftothisstirringappeal?Isyourcharitysoformalandprofessionalthatyou failtorecognisetheweightyissuesthatareatstake.Mydear breathren,youaretheenvyof theworldinthepricelessheritageofyourfaith.Bigotryis begottenofjealousy.Youare thechildrenofpredilection, `wellbelovedsonsinwhomGod iswellpleased."Canyounot appreciatethedignitythatis yours,andthemissionthatChrist hasentrustedtoyou-tomake Himeverywherebetterknown, betterloved,andbetterserved. AfterleavingKalgoorlie, wherewemetBernieHansen, well-knowntoY.C.W.'sinPerth, thegreatinlandofAustralialay beforeusandallaround.No oneinourgroupshowedmuch interestinthecountrysideorin theblue-bushandsalt-bush, aboutwhichwehadheardin school.Butwhenthetrain stoppedallourgangrushedfor sticksandplayedimprovised gamesofhockey.Someofthe passengersthoughtwewerea hockeyteam,untilweexplained ',hatwewere,andthenwe foundthemeagertoknowmore abouttheY.C.W.anditsaims, andtheyweresurprisedatthe vastnessoftheidealsofour Movement.
Thestoppingplacesalongthe linewerequaintinappearance andquaintintheirnames. Zanthus,forexample,sounds likethenameofaflower,butis farfromblooming.Thenthere isaseriesofplacesofwhich thenamesrecallpoliticalfigures ofthepast. Mileaftermileofdesertwas passedbyuntilatlastwereachedcivilisationagainatPort Pirie,inSouthAustralia.We hadagoodlookaroundthetown, andthenasthetrainmovedon webegantothinkandtalkabout Adelaide.

Sir,-Averylargeadvertisementappearedinyourissueof Ocober9inconnectionwiththe proposedNationalisation ol Banking.Thisverymisleading advertisementwasinsertedby theso-calledCitizens'RightsAssociation,andIwouldlike, throughthecourtesyofyour columns,tomakeafewcommentsonit.
Firstofall,whycallthisorganisationtheCitizens'Rights Association,whenitisinfact theBankers'RightsAssociation, aliastheToryparty,whoserecordforspreadingitsmisleadinginsidiouspropagandathrough itssubsidiaryorganisationsis onlyequalledbytheCommunist Party.IftheseTorieshave suchagoodcaseagainstthe BankingLegislation,whodothey notconicoutintheopen?If theyhaveaplanforthefuture developmentofthiscountry,why isitnotmadeavailabletothe Public?

Partythatitsuccessfullygovernedthiscountryfor18months luringthedarkestcrisisinour historywithoutamajorityin eitherHouse.
