Itisstrange,buttrue,thatAustralianCatholicsareby nomeanssufficientlyalivetotheimportanceofthework oftheSocietyforthePropagationoftheFaith,although Austtraliaitselfisyet,inmanyrespects,onamissionary status.YettheobligationimposedbytheMissionAid Societies,while"sosmallathinginitself,.'is"sogreata charityinitseffects."ThattheapostoliczealofCatholicsshouldthusneedtobestirredupafresheachyearis itselfadisturbingreflection.FortheFaith,ofitsvery nature,isdynamic.Itcannotremainstatic;eitherit marchesoritstagnates.Thiswasmadeevidentinevery figurewhichOurLordemployedtodescribetheChurch, whichistheorganicunionofallthefaithful.Itwasa tree,anetfulloffish,ameasureofleaven,corngrowing amongcockle-alwayssomethingalive,intense,andpropagatingitself.
Thattheapostolicspiritamongthegeneralbodyof Catholicslackthisessentialdynamismistobeexplained fromavarietyofcauses.Historically,duringthesepostReformationcenturies,theChurchhasbeenlargelythrown intoadefensiveagainsttheworld.Itwasgenerally necessarytoconserveandconsolidatewhatremainedafter thepillageofLuther,Calvinandtherest.Theywere yearsofchallengeagainsttruthsthathadstoodforcenturies.Whilethisgreatdefensiveofapologeticwas beingbuiltup,however,someofthegreatcentraldogmas, suchastheMysticalBodyofChrist,weretemporarilylost toview,andconcurrentlythenewsecularculturesarose outofProtestantismtosaptheCatholiclife.SothattodaytheimpactoftheworldupontheCatholicspiritcan beseeninnothingsoclearlyasinthemechanisticconceptionoftheChurchasanorganisationratherthananorganism,inthetendencytoleavetheapostolicworkofthe Churchtotheclergyalone,andintheessentiallyProtestantviewthatreligionisaprivateandpersonalmatter. Wouldyoupleaseanswerthis onequestion:"Whatissin"?
AndtheAnswer:Sinisany wilfulthought,word,deed,or omissionagainstthelawofGod.
ThelawofGodmaybemade knowninseveralways;forinstance,sinceGodhascreated manandgivenhimaspecific nature,manmustdothosethings thatthatnaturedemandsof him.Forinstance,sinceinfantsarenaturallyincapableof providingthemselveswithfood andclothing,itfollowsthattheir parentshavethedutyofdoing so.Inthesameway,thefact thatthesechildhen,whilestill dependentontheirparents,need instruction,provesthattheparentshavearightanddutyof providingthemwithinstruction. Ithaslongbeenthecustomto giveOurLordthemetaphorical titleof"King,"bywhichHeis justlysaidtoreignintheminds ofmenbyreasonofthekeenness ofHisintellectandtheextent ofHisknowledge,inthewillsof men,becauseinHimthewillwas perfectlyandentirelysubjectto theHolyWillofGod.
Adeeperconsiderationofthe matterwillshowusclearlythat thetitle"King"belong%to Christasman,notonlyinthis metaphoricalsense,butalsoina strictandpropersense,because theWordofGodasconsubstantialwiththeFather,hasall thingsincommonwiththe Father,andthusnecessarily completeandsupremedominion overallcreatedthings.
ThereforeitisonlyasMan thatHemaybesaidtohavereceivedfromtheFather"power, gloryandakingdom"(Dan.WI., 13,14).
THEOLDTESTAMENT.
ThroughouttheScriptureswe readthatChristisKing.Firstly,intheOldTestament.For instance,inthePsalms.
Inthenuptialhymnwherethe futureKingofIsraelishailed asamostrichandpowerful monarch,weread: "ThyThrone,0God,isfor everandever;thesceptreof Thykingdomisthesceptreof righteousness."(P.11.)
ItisforetcfldthatHisKingdomwillhavenolimit."InHis daysshalljusticespringupand abundanceofpeace. AndHe shallrulefromseatoseaand fromtheriveruntotheendsof theearth."(Ps.LXXI.)
InIsaiasweread"Forachild isborntousandasonisgiven us,andthegovernmentis uponHisshoulder,andHis nameshallbecalledWonderful, Counsellor,GodtheMighty,the Fatheroftheworldtocome,the PrinceofPeace.Heshallsit upontheThroneofDavidand uponHisKingdom;toestablish itandstrengthenitwithjudgmentandwithjusticefrom henceforthandever"(IsaiasIX., 6-7.)
Theotherprophetsarein accordancewithIsaias.
THENEWTESTAMENT.
Thissamedoctrineiseven moreclearlytaughtandconfirmedintheNewTestament.For instance,thewordsoftheArchangeltotheVirgin:"TheLord GodshallgiveuntoHimthe throneofDavid,hisfather,and Heshallreigninthehouseof Jacobforever;andofHisKingdomthereshallbenoend." (LukeI.,32-33.)
Andagain,ChristHimself spokeofHisKinglyauthority: inHislastdiscourse;inHisresponsetotheRomanGovernor, whoaskedHimpubliclywhether hewasaKingornot;whenHe gaveHisApostlesthemission ofteachingandbaptisingallnations;HecalledHimselfKing; Hesolemnlyproclaimedthatall powerwasgiventoHiminheavenandonearth.
AndagainSt.Johncalls Christthe"PrinceoftheKings oftheearth;"andashaving writtenonHisgarmentandon Histhigh"KingofKingsand LordofLords."
Therefore,theChurchhasconstantlyusedthesetitlesinthe Liturgy:inancientpsalmodys, intheSacramentaries,inthe SacrificeoftheMass,andinpublicprayers.Thesameisfound intheEasternLiturgiesthus showingthetruthoftheaxiom: Legemcredendilexstatuitsupplicandi-theruleoffaithisindicatedbythelawofourworship.
Infine,Christhasadominion imposedbyHisessenceand nature,byvirtueoftheHypostaticunion;toHimangelsand menaresubjectandmustrecogniseHisEmpire;Hehaspower overallcreatures.
NATUREANDMEANINGOF THETITLE.
TheKingshipofChristconsistsinthethreefoldpoweressentialtoKingship:Heislawgiver,asisclearfromtheGospels;HeisJudge:"Forneither doththeFatherjudgeanyman; buthathgivenalljudgmentto theSon."(JohnV.,22.)Hehas executivepower-allmustobey HiscommandsandnonecanescapeHissanctions.
Christ'sKingdomisprimarily aspiritualone,asisclearfrom theScripturesandfromHisown modeofaction;fromHisattitudewhentheJews,andeven theApostles,misunderstoodthe natureoftheMessianicKingdom;fromHisreactionwhen thepeoplewouldhavemadeHim King;andfromHisanswerto theRomanGovernor.From theGospelsweknowthatmen mustpreparetoenterthisKingdomthroughpenance;thatthey cannotactuallyenterexceptby faithandbybaptism,whichsignifiesandproducesaninterior regeneraton;thatthisKingdom demandsofitssubjectsaspirit ofdetachmentfromrichesand earthlythings,aspiritofgentleness,athirstafterjustice,a willingnesstodenythemselves andcarrythecross.
Christ'skinglydignitypartakesalsoinamannerofHis officesasRedeemerofMankind, andasPriestoftheNewTestament.
Ontheotherhand,itwouldbe anerrortosaythatChristhas noauthoritywhateverincivil affairs.Byvirtueoftheabsoluteempireoverallcreatures committedtoHimbytheFather, allthingsareinHispowerand HisEmpireembracesallmen. NeverthelessHerefrainedfrom exercisingsuchauthoritywhile onearth;andwhileHedisdainedtocarefororpossessearthly goods,Hedidnotanddoesnot interferewiththosewhopossess them.ButinthematterofHis supremedominionthereisno differencebetweentheindividual andthefamilyortheState;all men,collectivelyandindividually,aresubjecttoHim:inHim isthesalvationofsociety,as wellasthesalvationoftheindividual.
THEKINGOFPEACE.
Therefore,whenallmen,both inprivateandinpubliclife,recognisethatChristisKing,societywillreceivethegreat blessingsofrealliberty,wellordereddiscipline,peaceand harmony.
