Acourageousactioninalocalityandatatimewhenracial hatredhasagainreareditsugly head:
InSt.LouisJimCrowwalks ononeleg:Negroesridethe streetcarsandbuseswiththe whitefolks;aportraitofDred Scotthasaprominentplace placeamongthehistoricalmonumentsintheJeffersonMemorial. ButinSt.Louis,asinallMist scuri,publicschoolsareJim Crowschools.So,inpractice, havebeentheRomanCatholic parochialschools.Therewas noactualcolourline,butitwas alwayswellunderstoodbyCatholicNegroesthattheirchildren weretogototheovercrowded all-NegroschoolsinthecrowdedNegrodistricts.
LastweekSt.Louis'Archbishop,JosephElmerRitter,ripped downthisracialbar.HeannouncedthatNegrochildren
forTheseChildren,Too. couldattendanydiocesanschool withintheirparishes.Morethan 700whiteCatholicparentsbandedtogethertoprotesttheseating ofNegroesnexttotheirchildren.Theyknockedatthe Archbishop'sdoor;hewouldnot seethem.Theythreatened courtaction;theywouldhirea lawyerandaskforaninjunctionagainsttheArchbishop.
Thisweektheprotestersgota shock.ArchbishopRitter,a mildbutapositiveman,gave themawarninginapastoralletter,readatallMassesthroughouthisarchdiocese.Ifthey carriedthroughtheirthreatof actionagainsttheChurch,he said,theywouldbeopentothe gravestpenaltytheChurch canexercise-excommunication.
"Obediencetoecclesiasticalau thority."saidhisletter,wasa cardinalprincipleoftheirfaith. So,heremindedthem,was"the equalityofeverysoulbeforeAlmightyGod."

Anotherpuzzlingfeatureof theaffairisthatthe"Daily News"andthe"WestAustralian"are,Iunderstand,under commonownership.Thelatter isunequivocallyopposedtonationalisation,whiletheformer sitsonthefenceandindulgesin alittlemud-slingingatCatholieswho,asprivatecitizens, havebeeninthevanguardofoppositiontothenewandparamountFederal"grab."One wouldthinkthatifthePressis fightingnationalisationforthe rightreasons(thatis,because theproposalmenaceshumanliberty),itwouldwelcomeanyally withwhomitcouldfindcommonn groundinnaturalideals.

Some60oddmilesfromLisbon,Fatimaisaparishofseveralhamletsdottedaboutinthe holydistrictoftheSerrade Aira,inthedioceseofLeiria.In oneofthesehamlets,Aljustrel, ,herelivedthefamiliesrelated bymarriage,ofAntonydosSantosandManuelPedroMarto.
OnMay13,1917,aSunday, 'neeoftheirchildrensetoutto mindsomesheepgrazingina nearbyvalley,theCovadaIria.
TheywereLucydosSantos, aged10,andhercousins,Francis andJacinto.Marto,agednine andseven.
Shortlyafternoonthechildren werealarmedbyavividflashof lightining.Fearinganapproachingtempest,theybeganto drovehomethesheep,butwere haltedbyasecondflash.Then theyweredazzledbyanamazing pparitionsomepacesdistant.

Oneofthebest-knownandreveredoftheDominicansinWest Australia,MotherMaryDominicaMurphy,diedatSt.Johnof GodHospital,Geraldton,on Wednesday,September24,atthe ageof83years.
Bornin"Ballinamona,"Cashel, Co.Tipperary,Ireland,shereceivedhereducationfromthe PresentationandUrsulineNuns atThurles,andearlyconceived theideaofconsecratingherlife toGodinreligion.Anopportunitypresenteditselfwhenher nearrelative,thelateMother MaryGabrielGill,wenttoIrelandinquestofrecruitsforher NewZealandmission.in1887 sheenteredtheDominicanNovitiateinDunedin,andaftercompletinghertrainingandspendingsomeyearsteaching,shewas oneoftheheroiclittlebandwho answeredthelateBishopKelly's callforSisterstoteachinthis far-flungandsparselypopulated dioceseofGeraldton.Theprivationsandhardships,trialsand troublesofthispioneerband weremanyandvaried,andto ourmodernwayofthinking, well-nighincredible.Theirfirst homewasinGreenough,and lateronconventswereopenedin varioustownsintheMurchison Goldfields.ThejoyandhappinesstheSistersexperiencedin beingbearersofGod'smessage
duringgreatbodilysuffering. OnFridaymorningherremainswerebroughttotheConventChapel,whereSolemnRequiemMasswascelebratedfor thereposeofhersoul.The celebrantwasRev.FatherFitzgerald(Geraldton),assistedby Rev.FatherWilliam,O.S.B.,as deacon,andRev.FatherLangmead(Perth)assub-deacon. VeryRev.FatherGallagherwas masterofceremonies,andVery Rev.FatherO'Connorassistant priest.HisLordshiptheBishopofGeraldton,Dr.Gummrr, presidedattheMass,whichwas beautifulyrenderedbytheNuns' Choir,assistedbyRev.Father Theodore,O.S.B. AfterHis Lordshiphadgiventhefinalabsolutions,thefuneralprocession passedthroughaguardofhonourformedbytheSisters,schoolchildrenandfriendsofthed' ceased,andwendeditswayto theNuns'littlecemetery,where shewaslaidtorestbesideher pioneerSisters,allofwhomhave now,unhappily,passedaway,but one.Wewillmissherstooped andsaintlyfigure,butthememoryofheredifyingandholylife willalwaysremainwithus. IntheWinthropHall,onSaturday,September27,Vaughan Hanly,whoisleavingshortlyfor England,gaveafarewellrecital toagood-sizedaudience.The concertwasundertheauspices oftheUniversityAdultEducationBoard.Mr.Hanlywhile awayintendstostudynotonly theviolinbutconductingmethods.
Heopenedhisrecitalwiththe well-knownbeautifulSonatain EMinorbyEdwardElgar.Its temperisdecidedlytheromanticismoftheVictorian-Edwardianperiod,butitisfullofcharm andissobeautifullywrittenfor theviolin,thatitisalwaysboth gratefultoplayandtolistento. Onecouldnotsaythatitisfull ofcontrastingmoods,butrather thatitisfullofthecapricesof onesamemood,whichisperhapsanotherwayofsayingthat ithasinittheinterestofcontrast,combinedwithunityof thoughtandfeeling.Theviolinistcaughtitsspirit,andhis beautifultoneandfinebowing controlenabledhimtofollowits spiritthroughout.
Thesecondnumberwasofa differentnature.Thistime fromanotherEnglishcomposer, whoseworkbelongstoasomewhatmoremodernschoolof thought,R.Vaughan-Williams. He,alongwithHoistandsome others,exploitedEnglishfolkmusic,andfolk-musicinspired thematicmaterialformanyof theirworks.The"LarkAscending"hasbecomequitepopular thesedays.Manyarabesque-like figures,basedonasomewhat modelscale,curlaroundachar-

Mr.Hanlymadeaveryreal contributiontoPerthmusicalexperiencewhenheperformed(1 shouldthinkforthefirsttime inPerth)averyinterestingSonatabyHindemith,forviolin alone.Thisisaverylovely work,andbeingasrecentlywrittenas1942,isaverysignificant indicationofthetrendofmodern writing.Goneistheoin-worn aridsomewhatstaleprovocativenessoftheadvancedpost-war No.1group,inwhichHindemith himselfattimesseemedtobe placed.Theirrevoltwastoodeliberateandbasedonsometimes laboratory-madetheories,and mightevenbechargedwiththat callousnesspropertotheeverrecurringgroupof"revoltes'found amongthebrightyouthsofUniversities.Thislittleworkis sheerloveliness,gracedwithall theartsthatarethepermanent fruitsofmodernexperimentin composition,andyetfollgwing theolderideaoftryingtdgive expressiontothebeautiful. I thinkthatnowmostofusare gladtobidfarewelltotherealism,uglyornot,becauseit neveratanytimewasmorethan ahalfexpressionoftruth.The uglyisnotall.Evenovera sceneofcarnageneitherthe playofsunlightnormoonlight haslostitsbeauty,norhasthe heroismofsoldiers(especially unarmedambulancemenand chaplains)lostitsnobility.
Thetitlesofthemovementsat firstledonetoexpectthatthere wassomephantasyaboutthem, likethewhimsicaltitlesSchumannlikedtogivetosomeofhis shorterworks;but"lightlymovingcrochets"turnedouttobe nomorethanthemorefamiliar "AndanteLeggiero"and"Gaily movingquavers"wouldinall probabilityhavenormallyborn thetitle"AllegrettoCalmato."
Itisnomeantaskwritinga completelysatisfyingworkfor theviolinwithouttheaidof someaccompaniment,butthis Hindemithhassucceededindoing.VaughanHanlyacquitted himselfsplendidlyinthetaskof interpretingthisdelicatework, andshowedhimselftobebotha skilledviolinistandamusician, whichisnotalwaysthesame thing.
