Co-OperationtoMitigate Monopoly?
TheonlyCatholicstatement onanofficiallevelonthenationalisationofthebankstobe madesinceourlastissue,has beenthatoftheArchbishopof Melbourne.FromthepressreportitwouldseemthatDr.Mannixdoesnottakesides,butis concernedthat,shouldnationalisationofbankingcomeinto force,itshouldnotestablisha bankmonopoly.HisGracewas alsocarefultopointout(apparentlyasanantidotetoreporters' guess-work)that"neitherthe PopenortheBishopsofAustra liaasabodyhaveyetsaidanythingfororagainsttheproposed legislationtoshow,iftheycan, thedesirabilityornecessityof it."
Whileitistruethatonecannotjustlyclaimthatmonopoly
ofbankingisproposeduntilthe GovernmentbringsdownthepertinentBillnextmonth,whatever hasbeendivulgedbyGovernmentalspokesmentodatestronglysuggeststhatsuchisCanberra'sintention.Truly,the Statebanksmaysurviveinsomuchastheyareprotectedby theConstitution.butresolute Federalactioncouldcurtailtheir activitiestovanishingpoint,and eventuallyputthemoutofbusiness. ThisnaturallystrikesCatholicsasaveryrumproceeding, becausetheirsisanauthoritarianreligioussystemsuchas ChristoutlinedintheNewTestament.Butitmustcause scandaleventothosesteepedin religiousindifferentismthat suchessentiallyreligiousmatters asareinvolvedinthiscasecould notbesettledauthoritativelyand domestically. ACatholicwho presumedtodragaBishop throughtheCourtswouldvery presentlybetreatedtoaceremonyinvolvingbellandcandlestick.Andthisisnotbecause aBishopcandonowrong,but becausetheChurchmaintains itsownCourtsforpreciselysuch cases,andwhere,not,merely law,butjusticeisdispensed. Catholicsarealsointhesuperiorpositionofknowing(orbeing abletofindout)inclearandcertaintermsexactlywhattheybelieve.Mr.JusticeCocklecarrot isnotsummonedtodecidethe validityofintra-uterinebaptism.Evenveryyoungpeople mighthesitateabouthiscompetenceinsuchmatters. proposalswhenitishell-bentto ignorethemassofoppositionrevealedbytheGallopPoll,only timewilltell.
Ithasbeensuggestedatthe NationalCatholicRuralMovementConferenceinMelbourne thattheGovernmentshouldincorporateco-operativecreditsocietiesintothenationalbanking structure,thusensuringthedemocraticadministrationofcredit.Thissuggestion,ifpracticable,wouldcertainlyrepresenta Christiananddemocraticreformofthebankingadministration,andwouldprovideabasis ofunitynotonlyforCatholics, butforallmenofgoodwill. Thesecreditsocietieswouldbe availablefornormalbanking functionstoallwhohavethe initiativetoorganisethem.
However,pessimismisinthe natureoftreacherywhena countryisinthepassAustralia hasreached.But,ontheother hand,wishfulthinkingisnot goingtoprovideuswithanything-exceptanunpleasant finaljar.Canberraisdeterminedtocarrythroughitsmonopolisticpolicy,andonlytheLaw Courtsmayeventuallycalla halt.Oncethepowerofmoney isinthehandsoftheFederal politicians,theshapeofthe futureisanyone'sguess.But sincewehaveopposedthenationalisationproposalschieflyon thegroundsofsubsidiarity,or doingthingsinasmallway,it willbeusefultoshowthatthe realsolutionofthemoneyproblemisindecentralisation ratherthanmonopoly.Whether Canberrawillbedisposedto giveconsiderationtominority

Itispreposterousthatanissue suchas Transubstantiation shouldbediscussedinanordinaryCourtofLaw,andeven moreludicrousthattheCourt shouldhavetodecidewhether thatdoctrineistaughtbythe ChurchofEngland.Surelythe grotesqueillogicofthosewhose susceptibilitieswerewoundedby theinfamouscontroversyinthe HouseofCommonsoverchanges totheBookofCommonPrayer mustbedriventofrenzyoverthe latestdebacle.Itisincreasinglyhardtounderstandhowintelligentandsincerepeoplecan continuetosupportareligious systemsoobviouslybuilton sand.TheChurchindeedishumaninitsmembers,butitshould notbecomeahigh-classlunatic asylum.TheAnglo-Catholics areatthecross-roads.They thinktheycanrestorethefaith ofChristinthehomeofHenry VIII.,butthetaskisbeyond them.Betterfar,shorterand ofinfinitepermanence,toreturn totheirtruehome.

Twoutterancesduringtheweekonthequestionof therighttostrikedeserveattention.Thefirstwasin theformofalettertoourmorningcontemporaryregardingitssummaryoftheBishops'Statement-"PeaceinIndustry.'Ontheparticularissueofwhatconstitutesa juststrikethecorrespondentclaimedthat"thatissomethingwhichobviouslywouldbesettledbyaunion,or unions,andinthefaceofanydecisionagainstitorthem, bytheArbitrationCourt.TheRomanCatholicBishops are,therefore,wittinglyorunwittingly,opposingtheArbitrationCourtsystem."Suchaconclusioncouldonly havebeenreachedbyapersonwhohadnotreadthefull contextoftheBishops'Statement.Inthefirstplace,the Catholicviewisthattheindividualmembersofaunion are,ofcourse,thepeoplewhomustdecidewhetheraproposaltostrikeisorisnotjust,becausethequestionis primarilyamoralonetoberesolvedbytheconsciences ofindividuals.
FortheformationofthismoraldecisiontheBishops havesetoutclearlyfourdeterminantconditions,allof whichmustbesatisfactorilyansweredbeforeagoodconsciencecouldassenttothegraveproposaltostrike.Th( officialsofaTradeUnionmaybeabletoadvancecogent economicreasonswhylabourshouldbecollectivelywithheld,andtheArbitrationCourtmayaccuratelydispense thelaw,butthefinaldecisionasregardsthemoralityof thestrikeproposalrestsultimatelywiththeindividual worker.
Itispatentlyunfairtoinfer,asthenewspapercorrespondenthasdone,thatbecausethereoccursaseriesof irresponsible"political"strikes,everystrikeisofitsnature unjust.Evengranting,astheBishopsdo,thatmanyof thekeyunionsareCommunist-controlled,andthatintimi datorypracticespreventthefreeexpressionoftheindividual'sconscientiousview,astrikecouldstillbejustified ifitconformedtotheconditionscommonlylaidclownby thetheologians.
ThestatementthattheBishops(wittinglyorunwittingly)opposetheArbitrationsystemisnonsense.Had thecorrespondentreadthewholeStatement,insteadofa condensation,hewouldhavefoundthatthe4th.conditionofajuststrikereads:"Beforeastrikeisdeclared, everyeffortmustfirstbemadetosettlethedisputepeacefullythroughconciliation,arbitrationandotherpeaceful methods."-TheBishopsdonot,however,admitthepropositionthatthedecisionsoftheArbitrationCourtorof anyotherconciliatorybody,arethelastword.Ifthe workers,havingtriedeverypeacefulmeansofsettlinga dispute,arestillconscientiouslydissatisfied,theymay stillresorttothestrikeweapon.
\VhiletheArbitrationCourtmaybethelastwordin concilationinlaw,itsverdictsdonotnecessarilybindthe consciencesofworkers,andtheymaystillmorallyexercisetheirnaturalrighttowithholdtheirlabour,providd alltheotherconditionsforajuststrikeareconscientiouslyobserved.Thispreciseissuewasrecentlyraisedwhen theArbitrationCourtsatinKalgoorlie.ThePresident oftheCourtwouldnotallowaquestionconcerningajust strikeonthegroundthathecouldnotacceptthepropositionthatabreachofthelawcouldbejust.Legally,no doubt,suchaviewisperfectlycorrect,butfromtheviewpointofmoralphilosophyandsocialmorality,itisunacceptable.Therighttostrike,arisingoutofman'snaturalrightofassociation,isapartoftheNaturalLaw,which noenactmentsoftheStatethroughtheCivilLawcanabrogate.Tosuggestthatpositivelawcantakeprecedence overNaturalLawisperilouslyclosetoheresy.
Finally,however,thenewspapercorrespondentinfers thattheBishops"considerthat,whileastrikemaybea justone,alock-outcannoteverbejust."Thereishere averbalconfusionbywhichthewriterhasignoredthe Bishops'employmentofthetermthe"useoftheweapon ofthelock-out."JustastheChurchrecognisesthata strikeofitsnaturemaybejust,butitsuseinCommunist handsforpoliticalpurposesmaychangeitsnature,sothe lock-outonsimilarmoralprinciplesmaybejustexcept whereitspurposeissubvertedtomotivesofrevengeor partypolitics.

Wemustpassoverherearly life;thefactsofitarewell knowntoyou:Howafterbirth shewasasicklylittlegirlfor sometime.Attheageofthree shebegantoshowthoselittle worldlytraitscommontomany children.Shewasvainofher heauty,proudofher,pretty dresses,eagerforpraiseandnotice,inclinedattimestofitsof temperandstubbornness.Neverthelessthisveryhumanlittle girlbecameoneofthegreatest ofthesaints.
NolittleoftheLittleFlower's influenceoversoulsisduetothe humanimperfectionswenotice inherchildhood.Hercomplete eradicationofthosefaultshas taughtthousands,andindeed shouldteachus,thepossibility ofcompletevictoryoverour faultsifweimitateherLittle Wayofhumility,prayerfulness, andtrustinGod.
MIRACULOUSCURE.
Thedeathofhermothercame asagreatshocktoher,butthe crowningblowwastheentryof hersister,Pauline,her"little mother,"assheusedtocallher, intoCarmel.Weallremember howshewasatthepointof death.Thedoctorshaddespairedofsavingher,andthefamily wasgatheredaroundthebedside inanticipationoftheend.God, however,hadotherplansinstore forher. Amiraculouscure, throughtheintercessionofOur LadyofVictories,tookplace,and fromthatdaylittleThereseset outontheroyalroadofthe Cross. ShewassavedbecauseOur Lordhadotherplansforher; Hewantedtosetherasaguide forus.Tobringbeforeour eyesoncemorethewayoflife, Hehadtaught,thewayofspiritualchildhood.
Asoneofhersisters,Marie, wrote:"IthinkthatGodhas madeuseofachildtoshowthe greatandthewiseoftheearth thetruepathtoHeaven.He firstmadeHimselfalittlechild toshowusthisHimself,hutwe hadforgottenit,soHetaught HislessonagainbymeansoflittleTherese."
OurLordhadothertrialsand crossesinstoreforher.She startedschool,andthenshehad tosufferforyearswithattacks ofscruples.Allhumanfriends andconsolationslefthercold, andindespairsheturnedtoher littlebrotherswhopreceeded herintoheaven.Atlastshe foundpeaceandjoy,andfrom thisday,whichshecallsher"conersion,"shebecamedetach-ea fromthingsandfriendson earth.

Whennineandtenyearsold, Thereserepeatedlybeggedtobe receivedintotheCarmeliteConventatLisieux.Sheevenpersuadedherfathertogowithher totheBishoptobeghispermissiontoenter,butalltonoavail.
Alltheworldknowsthestoryof herdaringappealtotheHoly Father,whenshewasinRome duringapilgrimageattheage offourteen.Sheranacrossthe audienceroomandflungherself atthefeetofPopeLeoXIII., saying:"HolyFather,inhonour ofyourJubilee,permitmetoenterCarmelattheageoffifteen." EveryonegaspedatheraudacityasthePontiffanswered: "Well,child.youwillenterifit isGod'sWill."
EveninthefaceoftheHoly Father'srefusaltointerfere,she
cannotbeameanstoperfection, anditsplacehastobetakenby physicalsufferingorworldly losses.Butwheresuchcapacitydoesexistforacutemental sufferingveryfrequentlythe agoniesofrenunciationandthe lessonsondetachmentcanallbe gonethroughwithreferenceto comparativelyinsignificantobjects.
ENTERSCARMEL.
SheenteredCarmel,yes;she enrolledherselfamongthatchosenbodyofgeneroussoulswho havegiventheiralltotheservice ofGod,wholoveChristforthe millionswhohateHim,whohonourHimwiththeirsolemnchant forthemillionswhomockand revileHim,whoofferupunceasingprayersforthosewhowill notprayforthemselves.And thoughtheworldneverseestheir facesnorknowsoftheirexistence,thereprayerssearchthe endsoftheearthsnatchinguncountedsoulsfromruinand bringingheedlesswanderers hometoGod.God'sjusticeis satisfiedbythesacrificeoftheir innocentsoulsandstainless bodies.Theyaretheprecious victimsbywhichamadworldis savedfromtheconsequencesof itsfolly.
Everyageisbesetwithspecialproblems,andwecansee howineveryageGodraisesup specialmenandwomenwhoare toshowusthewaytoHim-to showushowtheGospelistobe livedintheseparticularperiods. Formoderntimesweneedmodernmethods,and,ifImightsay so,modernsaints.SuchaSaint wasSt.ThereseoftheChild JesusandtheHolyFace,sucha methodwasherlittlewayofperfection.
PIUSXII.ANDLITTLE .FLOWER.
OnlyashorttimeagoHis HolinessPopePiusXII.received insolemnaudiencethepromoterofTheresianpilgrimages, acertainMonsignorGermain. ThePopesaidtohim:"Itismy earnestwishthatallnations uniteinhonouringthisgreatest Saintinmoderntimes."
HisHolinesspromisedthat: "ThisTheresianyearwillbeone ofspiritualrenovation,more necessarythanmaterialrenovationintheaftermathofsucha devastatingwar.SinceGodAlmightyhasbeenpleasedtoraise upSt.ThereseoftheChildJesus formoderntimesas'amodelof virtuewhomallshouldunceasinglcontemplate,itisbutfitting thatthefaithfulshouldendeavourtostudyandtoimitatethe exampleofherlifeandvirtues. Youcanneitherexaggerateyour confidenceinthepowerofthe greatestSaintofmoderntimes noryourmanifestationofdevotioninherhonour."
ThewholelifeofSt.Therese isachallengetothemodern viewoflife-tothemodernidea oftryingtodoawaywithsufferingandpain.Shenotonly acceptedit,butlookedforit,and indeedfoundheronlypeaceand happinessinsuffering.
MARTYROFLOVE.
Tobeamartyrwashergreatestambition,butshewouldnot besatisfiedwithanordinarymartyr'sdeath.No.shewanted more;shewantedtobeableto sufferallthathadeverbeensufferedbyallthemartyrsfromthe beginningofChristianitytillthe endoftime.
Yes,shewantedtosufferand shedherbloodforChrist,butshe realisedthatthiswasimpossible,sosheprayed:"Lord,if IcannotwinthepalmofAgnes byblood,letmeatleastwinit bylove.Itwasthislovewhich inspiredhertoaskGodfor moreandmoresuffering."My God,givememartyrdomofbody orsoul,butrathergiveAteone andtheother."Sheknewthat Godwouldhearherprayer;she knewthatthepathtojoyever leadsthroughthevaleofsuffering,andshewasreadytoaccept allinthespiritoflove.
Therearetwokindsofmartyrdom,oneexteriororphysical, andtheotherinteriorormental ShehadaskedGodforboth,and Hewastogiveherbothofthem. Themartyrdomofherbodyonly lastedashorttime,butthemartyrdomofhersoulwasthere fromherverychildhood. Wheresensitivenessisnotexistentorbluntedmentalsuffering
SPIRITUALHOLOCAUST. SherealisedthattoofferherselftoGodasavictimoflove wasnottoofferherselftoaGod whodisposedofsweetnessand spiritualconsolations.Itisto offeroneselftoallthatispainfulandbitterbecauseGodlives onlybysacrifice,andasshesaid:
"Themorewesurrenderourselvestolovethemorewesurrenderourselvestosuffering.There wasatimewhenIdidnotthink thatitwasnecessarytosuffer verymuchinordertoattain sanctity,butGodsoonshowed methattheonlywaytoHis Heartwasthroughpainandsuffering."
Itwasthisspiritofterrible mentalanguishthatshecarried withherrightthroughCarmelalifeofsorrowthatmakesher autogiographyreadlikeacontinuationofthecryofOurLord ontheCrossofCalvary:"My God,MyGod,whyhestThou forsakenMe?"
Thesightofhersuffering makesustrembleatthethought thatitisonlybysuchprocess ofpurificationandrefining, eitherhereorinPurgatory,that thenaturalsoulofmancanbe fittedtothevisionofGod.
DARKNIGHTOFSOUL.
Verysoonsheenteredinto whatisknowntowritersofmysticaltheologyasthedarknight oftheSoul.EvenGodseems farawayandseemstohaveforgottenalabouther.Shewalkedbyblindfaithandtrustduringthisperiod,whichdidnot lastonlyforafewweeksor months,butwhichtookupthe greaterpartofherreligiouslife. TimeandtimeagainsherepeatedthewordsofSt.Francisde Sales:"EvenifHeshouldkill me,IwillstilltrustHim.The sadnessofGesthemehadenteredmysoul,shewrote. Iwas alonewithoutcomfortfromheavenorearth.SometimesIconfessalittlerayofsunshinepenetratedmysoul,butlatertheremembranceofthisrayoflight makesthedarknessevendeeper still."Andonherdeath-bed shewastowrite:"Thecupis fulltothebrim.No,Ishould neverhavebelievedthatitwas possibletosuffersomuch.Ican onlyexplainitbymyextreme desiretosavesouls."
ShehadofferedherselftoGod asaholocaust,andGodhadacceptedheroffer.Everypain shesuffered,everytearsheshed isnowbringingitsreward,and justaswewereredeemedonly bythesufferinganddeathof OurLordonCalvary,sowithout thesetrialsandsufferingsher lifewouldhavebeenimperfect andheroblationincomplete. Addedtotheseterrificinterior sufferingswasthethoughtofher belovedfatherlyinghelpless andparalysedinaninstitution fortheinsane.Thenthemartyrdomofherbody,theslow wastingawayandagonyofher sickness."Mydesireforsufferinghaditsfill,"shewrote."In spiteofthismyattractionfor themdidnotgrowless.Inthe midstofthesetribulationsfor whichIhadyearned,Iwasthe thehappiestofmortals."
LOVEOFNEIGHBOUR. Itwaslovethatpromptedher toaskGodforsuffering,that overwhelmingpassionatelove thatmadeherseek,notherself, butherbeloved.Itwasthis sameloveofGodthatwasthe sourceofherloveforhernejlhbour.Sherealisedthatitwas herdutytoloveherneighbour, andthatmeansus,too,with somethingofthesamepassionatelovethatwellsupforhim fromtheSacredHeartofJesus. OnewindydayinMarchthe snowsweremeltingonthemountainheights,andtheriverthat flowedthroughthegorgewas filledwithanicyfloodofmeltedsnow.Asthedaylengthenedthewatersgrewnoisier,and theirceaselessroarmadetheold womanandherdaughteruneasy. Theywenttobedatlastinfear andtrembling.
Aboutmidnightacrashcausedthemtostartupinterror. Clingingtoeachother,they creptdowntotheedgeofthe gorge,andfoundthebridge brokentopieces. Searchinganxiouslyroundthe littlehut,hereyesrestedonthe oldwoodenbedsteadandtwo woodenchairs.Theyweredry andold.Theseweretheonly thingsshecouldburn.
Withtremblingandeager handsthetwowomenchopped andcutatthebedstead,untilit layonthefloorinpieces;then, carryingtheseintheirarms, theyclimbedupontotheline andpiledupthewoodinthemiddleofthetrack.
Shieldingamatchfromthe wind,theoldwomanstruckit andputittothepileoffurniture.Toherjoy,thiscaught alight;justintime,forasitbegantoblazeuptherumbleof thetraincouldbeheard.
Howeagerlymotherand daughterwatchedthatburning pile,hopingandprayingthatthe engine-driverwouldseeitin timetostopthetrain!The mothertookofftheredskirtshe wore,tiedittoastick,andhurrieduptheline,wavingital;out inthelightfromthefire,while the(laughterflourishedaburningpost.
Nearerandnearercamethe roarofthetrain;itwasroundingthecurve;theycouldseethe lightinfrontoftheengine. Thengraduallythetrainslowed down,andcametoastopclose totheblazingpile.
Thedriver'skeeneyes,accustomedtoseefarahead,discoveredthedangerouschasmand theemptyspacewherethere shouldhavebeenabridge;and ashiseyestravelledtotheburningfurnitudeandthefigureof theoldwomanandherdaughter herecognisedtheactofcourageousself-sacrificethathadcome fromabraveheart.
