TheseveralthousandC-atholiesresidentinKalgoorlieare notlikelytoforgetthestirringmonthofAugust,justpassed. NosoonerhadtheMissionendedsogloriously,thanthearrangementsforthemostmomentousthreedaysinthehistoryof thedistrictwereunderway.

TheFortyHours'Devotion commencedat6.30a.m.onFridaywithaMiisaCantata,celebratedbytheAdministrator, Rev.FatherCarmody,andEucharisticProcessionpreceding adoration.

MembersoftheHolyName SocietyandotherskeptvigilduringFridaynightandtheearly hoursofSaturdaymorning.

Rev.FatherGallagherwas celebrantonSaturdaymorning TorthesecondMissaCantata.

OnSundaymorning,HisGrace celebrated7o'clockMass,and atthis,andalltheearlyMasses, practicallythewholecongregationreceivedHolyCommunion.

Atthe10o'clockSolemnHigh Mass,HisGracepresidedatthe throne.Rev.FatherMcCarthy (Boulder)wascelebrant,Rev. FatherGallagherdeacon,and Rev.'atherDunnesub-deacon.

FIRSTLOCALSEMINARIST LEAVESFORROME.

VeryRev.FatherCarmodywas masterofceremonies.

ImmediatelyafterthisMass, thecongregation,joinedbyhundredsofothers,formedinEucharisticprocessionfourdeep, andproceededthroughthe streetstoSt.JohnofGodHospital.Beforeanaltarerected inthehospitalgrounds,BenedictionwasgivenbytheArchbishop,afterwhichthelengthyprocessionwendeditswaybackto St.Mary'sChurch,whereBenedictionwasagaingiven.

Theprocessionwasheadedby childrenofthetwoConvent schools,followedbytheredcloakedHolyAngels,andthe blue-cloakedChildrenofMary.Ladiesoftheparishwerenext, andthencamepupilsofthe ChristianBrothers'College,the HolyNameSociety,menofthe parish,andtheclergy.Atthe /TarcametheArchbishop,carryingtheMonstrance.beneatha canopybornebyprominentmembersoftheCatholiclaity.His GracewasattendedbyMr.P.J. Russell,KnightofSt.Sylvester.

Itwasestimatedthattwelve tofourteenhundredpersons marchedinthismagnificentdemonstrationofFaith.

Atfiveo'clock,theRallyof theHolyNameSocietywasheld inSt.Mary'sHall.Thepresident,Dr.DalySmith,welcomed HisGracetheArchbishop.the clergy,andotherprominent guestsonbehalfofthemembers. HisGracespokeofhisgreat delightatbeingpresentatthe gathering.TheHolyNameSocietywasofthegreatestimponanceinthecommunity.Its influencewasfeltineverywalk oflife,arealleaven,infact.

Themanlyactionsofpractical memberswerejudgedbyall theirfellow-men,andmustleave averygreatimpression. He counselledthemtobefaithfulto theirhighidealsandtoseta fruitfulexampletotheyounger generation. Heconcludedby tellingthemtobeuncompromisinginfundamentalprinciples, hutinallthingstobecharitable intheirdealingswiththeirfellow-men.

Mr.F.J.O'Deawasthelecturer,hissubject,"SocialJusticeinAustralia,"beingvery ablyhandled.

At7.30p.mthefourthgreat eventoftheday,Confirmation, wasconferredon130candidates, childrenandadults.

BeforeadministeringtheSacrament,HisGraceexplainedthe importanceandsignificanceof thegreatoccasion,andtheobligationofthechildrentoliveas faithfulsoldiersofChrist,attendingHolyMass,andfrequent- ingtheSacramentsregularly. alsoexhortedtheparentsto supplementthewonderfulspirit- ualtrainingthechildrenwere receivingfromtheSistersand Brothers,whotaughtthem,by guardingandguidingthemdurngthehoursoftheirleisure. Hestressedtheadvisabilityof keepingthepledgeasagood spiritualhelp.

Hespokemostfeelinglyofthe extremepleasurehehadreceivedfrombeingassociatedwiththe parishduringthemomentous lastthreedays.WithsuchsodalitiesandsocietiesastheHoly NameSociety,SacredHeartSodality,LegionofMary,Children ofMary,HibernianSociety,and theNationalCatholicGirls' Movement,anda beautiful ('hurch,Hospital.Conventsand ChristianBrothers'Collegeand aCatholicLibrary,thefull ('hristianlifewaspracticalon theGoldfields,andindeedwas themeasureofthelivesofmany.

ThefirststudentfromSt. Charles'ProvincialSeminary, Guildford,leftbytheStratheden recentlytomakehistheological studiesattheCollegedePropagandaFidei,Rome.HeisMr. PeterQuinn,sonofMr.andMrs. J.Quinn,ofBeaufort-street, Perth.BorninSubiaco,Mr. Quinnwaseducated,firstatthe SacredHeartPrimarySchool, Highgate,andlaterattheChristianBrothers'Collegeinthat parish.Hewasafoundation studentofthe,newSeminary whenitwasopenedin1942,and hasjustcompletedhisphilosophy coursethere.OntheSunday beforehisdeparturehewasfarewelledattheSeminary,andhis class-matessawtheshipdepart. Mr.Quinnwillspendsometime inEnglandandEirebeforeleavingforRome.

AnewReligiousCongregation, theCommunityoftheHomeMissionarySistersofOurLady, MotherofDivineGrace,wasestablishedbyArchbishopTweedy, ofHobart,Tasmania,inApril, 1944.Theparticularpurposeof theCommunityistheimparting ofreligiousinstructiontochildreninthoseplaceswhereapermanentCatholicschoolcannotbe established,andingeneralto lookafterthespiritualneedsof peopleinoutbackpartswholack opportunitiesofknowingorpractisingtheFaith.

DuringEasterWeektheCommunityreceivedtheapprovalof 'heHolySeeforitsestablishment,andinJulythesixpioneer Sistersreceivedthereligious Numberedamongthe CommunityaretwoWestralians -SisterM.Magdalen(formerly MissAgnesRyan,ofSubiaco), andMissKathleenTwoomey, whoisanovice.

TheCatholicChurch andtheIndependence ofIndia

TheCatholicBishops'ConferenceofIndia,representingthe73 CatholicDiocesesofIndia,hasissuedthefollowingstatement:

TheCatholicBishops'ConferenceofIndiarejoicesthatat lastthefondlycherisheddesireofthepeopleforindependence hasbeenrealised.Whatismostnoteworthyisthatfreedom hasbeenwonwithoutrecoursetoviolenceandinaspiritofmutualgoodwillandharmonybetweentherulersandtheruled. ThatisanachievementofwhichboththeBritishauthoritiesand Indianleaderscanbeproud.

Thecountryfacestremendous difficultiesarisingfromshortage offood,povertyofthemasses, andpoliticalstrifeamongrival groups,whichcausedbloodshed anddestructionofpropertyona vastscaleoverwideareas.We prayandhopeferventlythat thesesufferingsmayceaseand peaceandgoodunderstanding prevailamongallsectionsofour country'sinhabitants.

TheCatholicChurch.

Catholicsallovertheworld willjoinusinprayersothat India'sdaysoftrialandsufferingmaysoonpassandthenationrisetogreatnessandpros- peritywithallthevigour,enthusiasmandidealismofyouth.

TheCatholicChurchisnotdirectly changes.concernedwithpolitical Hermissionisprim- arilyspiritual,toremindmenor lifeeverlastingandtoleadmen toGod.Shestandsforareligiousspirit,forthespiritual valuesoflifeandtheirinfluence onthecharacterofmen.But sheisnotandcannotbeunmindfulofthetemporalneeds andwelfareofmankind.Inall legitimateendeavoursofthe Governmenttopromotesocial andeconomicwelfare,peace, contentment,healthandeducation,ournationalleaderswill findinherasympathiser,friend andsupporter,withinthesphere ofherowncompetency.

NoColourorCaste.

TheCatholicChurchdoesnot recognisesuperiorityofcolour orcaste.Sheabhorsracialism anddeclaresthatallmenare equalbeforetheCreatorinmoral positionandvalue.Eachnationorracemayhaveitsown characteristics,aptitudes,and specialgifts.Itisbycultivatingallthatistrue,goodand noblethatanationisenriched andattainstohighvirtue.

Patriotism.

Shefurtherteachesth pa- triotismisbothavirtue a dutyandthatallcitizenshave certainobligationstowardstheir countryandtheirrulers.They shouldhonourandrespecttheir rulersandbepreparedtomake sacrificesforthecommongood. TheChurchconsecratesthespirit ofnationalitybyencouraging 'thatisjust,noble,andheroic. Herteachingandefforthavealwaysconstitutedamostefficacioussafeguardandsupportof temporalauthority,bywhich civilsocietyisgoverned.For herchildrenloyaltyandobediencetoconstitutedauthorityis areligiousduty,foundedonobediencetoGod.Therulersof thecountrycanrestassuredthat theChurchandherchildrenwill readilyco-operatewiththemin

allmeasuresintendedtopromote thewell-beingofsocietyand thehappinessandprosperityof thepeople.

FortheFuture.

Weappealtooursonsand daughterstogiveoftheirbestto themotherland,toserveasa bondofunionamongsections whichmaybekeptapartfrom oneanotherbysuspicionordiscord,andtoavailthemselvesof everyopportunitytofostera senseofunityandsolidarityso thatpeace,brotherlyloveand happinessmayreignamongall.

Welooktothefutureina spiritofhopefulnessandoptimism.IndiahasbeenthemotherlandofnumerousCatholicsfor twothousandyears.ChristianityflourishedinthecountryunderHinduRajahsandMoghul Emperors,longbeforetheconquestofthecountrybyforeign powers.Christianshavelived inamityandfriendshipintowns andvillagesamongtheirnonChristianneighboursandshared inthejoysandsorrowsoftheir country.Thoughsmallinnumber,theymadeanotablecontributiontothemoralandmaterial progressoftheirmotherland, chieflybymeansoftheircharitableandeducationalinstitutions. Theystandunitedwiththemore numerouselementsoftheircountrymenintheeffortanddeterminationtorenderIndiaagreat andthrivingland,worthyofher ancientcultureandherglorious past.

PrayerforLeaders.

AtthisturningpointofIndia's politicalhistory,ourthoughts arewithournationalleaders. Theirresponsibilitiesaregreat, theirburdenheavy.Inthedifficultdaysthatlieahead,they willneedmorethanever strength,courageandperseverance.OnPentecostSundaywe prayedfortheminaspecialmanlier.Weshallcontinuetopray forthemsothatGodmaygrant themlight,guidanceandwisdomtoshapetheconstitutional futureofIndiaandinitiateand carrythroughprojectsandreformsforthegoodofthecountryanditspeople.

WesternAustraliahasaveryspecialinterestinthis subject,becauseithasthelargestaboriginalandhalfcastepopulationofanyoftheStates.Despiteclaims thatthetribalnativesaredyingout,thisStatestillhas 10,000nativesasagainstanestimateof12,000almost fiftyyearsago.Detribalisednativesandhalf-castesaccountforanother16,000,andinsharpcontrasttowhite populationtrends,thehalf-castesaremultiplyingprolifically.InfheotherStates,whichhaveanative"problem," ChieflySouthAustraliaandQueensland,about#9p&head wasbeingspentonnativespriortothewar.ThisState wasexpendinglessthan£3ahead.Suchacontrast, thoughmostunsatisfactory,isnothumiliatingwhenour greaternativepopulationandlimitedfinancialresources aretakenintoaccount.Theobviousinferencesfrom thisstateofaffairsarethatagreatdealmoremoneyhas tobespentonournativepopulation,notmerelyoutof pitybutfromasternsenseofjustice,andthattheCommonwealthGovernmentmustsupplementtheStateefforts inthisregard. 4

AtthePremiers'Conferenceitwasdecidedtocalla conferenceofCommonwealthandStateofficialstoinvestigatethetransferofcontrolofaboriginestotheCommonwealth,and,alternatively,toconsiderthequestionofFederalfinancialresponsibilityfornativewelfare.Therewould appeartoheabsolutelynoreasonwhyCanberrashould aspiretohavedirectcontrolovernativewelfare.Already theFederalpoliticianshavesnoreontheirhandsthan theycanefficientlymanage.Thebestarrangementwould seemtobeCommonwealth-Stateco-operation,wherebythe Federalauthoritiesprovidesupplementaryfundsandthe Statescarryouttheworkaccordingtotheirindividualsituationsandtheneedspeculiartodifferentregions.Itis earnestlytobehopedthatthewelfareofournativerace willnotbemadeabargainingpointforincreasedFederal power.Suchaneventualitywouldbedespicableandthe nativeswouldhethechiefsufferersinanysuchengage ment.Meanwhile,thebettermentoftheircondition notoneforlanguidcharity,butfortheimperativeapple cationofjustice.

Bymartyrdom,theChurch meanstheenduranceofdeath fortheFaithorChristianvirtue.Inthecaseofadultsthere arethreeconditionswhichthe Churchlaysdownasnecessary beforeitwillacknowledgethem asmartyrs.Theyare:

(1)Deathoritssufficientcause musthavebeenactuallyinflicted.Thosewhosacrificetheir livesintheserviceoftheplague strickenarecalledmartyrsof charity,buttheyarenotmartyrsinthetechnicalsense.

Everyactofvice,everysinwe commit,beiteithermortalor venial,isafailureinfortitude. Letusmerittheassistanceof themartyrsbysomeportionof theirbravery.True,wemay notbeabletodogreatthings forGod,butSt.Thereseofthe ChildJesusrealisedthatwecan allbecomegreatsaintsbydoing theordinarythingsoflifeextrawell.

Letusaskforcourageand manlinessintellingthetruth,in resistingeviltalkandjokesat work.LetusbearwithChristianpatiencetheill-usageof others.

"PeaceinIndustry"isthe themeofthe8th.officialStatementissuedinconnectionwith theannualobservanceofSocial JusticeSundaythroughoutthe Commonwealth.Ofitsseven predecessor,onlythefirstissued in1940,wasanofficialpronouncementoftheHierarchy.The othershavebeenpublishedby theNationalSecretariatofCatholicActionwiththeformalapprovaloftheEspiscopalCommitteeonCatholicAction.Itis importanttoseizeonthesignificanceofthesetwomodesofprocedure.Wherethematterinvolvedwaspurelydoctrinaland ofuniversalapplication,theBishops,byvirtueoftheteaching authorityconferredonthemby Christ,spoketothefaithfulin anauthoritativemannerand withaunanimousvoice.Statementsofgeneralprinciple,however,necessaryastheyarefrom timetotime,wouldnotalone measureuptotheurgentsocial needsofourtimes.Hencean endeavourwasmadeinsixof theStatementstosuggestpracticalimplementationofCatholic Socialprinciples.Here,however,therecouldbenoquestion ofbindingthefaithfultoparticularsolutions,andhencethese documentswerenotissuedatan episcopallevel,butbytheSecretariatofCatholicAction.The Bishopsmerelyaffirmedthat nothingcontainedintheseproposalsrancountertoCatholic teaching.

Thisdistinction,whileitwas necessaryfortheclarificationof themindsofCatholicsastothe mannerinwhichtheStatements claimedtheirallegiance,isnot tobeconsideredderogatoryto thoseproposalswhichwerenot directlyissuedbytheBishops. Truly,theydonotbindtheconsciencesofCatholics,andleave scopefordifferencesofopinion. Buttheyrepresentthecareful researchandmaturejudgmentof Catholicsociologists;hencetheir findingsarenotlightlytobe castasideinfavourofthehalfboiled,confusedpoliticalideologieswhichstruggleforpowerin ourday.Theyrepresentmost valuablecontributionstoCatholicsocialthought,andassuch havebecomeincreasinglyrecognisedandappreciatedamongCatholicsinAustralia,England, andAmerica.Moreover,they haveplayedalargepartingivingdirectiontothevagueLiberalistictenetsofexistingpolitical partiesandinkeepinglegislation onasaneandChristianbasis.

TheactivityofCatholicscholars is,inthisrespect,apowerful challengetotheirresponsible directactionwhichhasdisgracedournationinrecentyears. Theyhaveshownthatthereasonedargumentcanproduceresultsmorefar-reachingand stablethananynumberofillconsideredstrikes.

TheStatementforthisyear, "PeaceinIndustry,"isconcernedpreciselywiththisproblem whichitselectsasthesocial struggleofourtimes.Thecon-

shouldbeemployedonlyasa lastresortwheneveryreasonablemeansofconciliationhas failed.

Whereasthetradeunionmovementwasoriginallyorganised anddevelopedfortheattainment oflegitimateindustrialends,the wholeaspectofthequestionhas beenalteredbytheriseofthe CommuriParty.Despitenum ericaldisparity,ithasachieved apositionofpowerwithinthe tradeunionswhich"seriously jeopardisestheeconomyofthe nation,thelibertyofitscitizens, andthesurvivalofparliamentaryinstitutions."TheCommunistPartyhassubvertedtheoriginalpurposesofunionismfrom flictsbetweenindustrialassocia-industrialbettermenttoabidfor tionsofworkersandemployerspoliticalpower.Itaims,through haveinvolvedusinissuesalmostcontroloftheunions,tooverasgraveasthoseofthewar.throwthemachineryofgovernAndtheimportancewhichisat-mentandtodestroypolitical,sotachedtoarightandChristian resolutionofthesetroublesisattestedbythefactthat"Peacein Industry"isissuedoverthesignaturesofelevenmembersofthe Hierarchy,andisexpectedto reachasalesfigureofaquarter ofamillion.

SincethethreatofCommunismliesbehindthesestruggles, andsincemanytradeunions

cialandreligiousfreedom.The strikehas,therefore,becomea revolutionaryweapontoachieve politicalmastery-asofficialCorn, munistdocumentsopenlydeclare.Andthatitismorethan amatterofwordsisprovedby recurrentstrikesfomentedbythe Reds,byconstantattacksonthe processesofconciliation,bythe destructionoforderedindustrial

perilprimarilybecauseitisa heresy.

Secondly,theBishopscall for, theremovalofthoseabusesof thecapitalistsystem-monopoly,. exploitation,thedenialofjust rights-whichbreedCommunism.

Andonthepositiveside,they urgethatworkersshouldbecome theownersandcontrollersof productiveproperty.TheChurch's roleistocontinueteachingthe truththatCommunismismaterialistic,theenemyofreligion,"a persecutingcreed,"withwhichno co-operationorcompromiseis possible.Toexposeitswiles, toencourageoppositions,and generallytopointoutthemoral significanceofeventsinthesocialandeconomicsphere,is withintheChurch'scompetence, anddoesnotconstitute"political Christianity."

GovernmentsandpoliticalpartiesalsobearaheavyresponsibilitynottousetheCommunist menacemerelyasaweaponof partypolitics."Toplaypoliticswhentheenemyisatthe gatesistreacherytothecauseof thenationandofChristiancivilisation."Governmentsshould preventintimidationandfraudulentelectionsintradeunions. PerhapsthebestproofofCommunistintentionsistheirdisregardfortheordinarychannelsof politicalreform-Parliamentary processes.Theyscarcelytrouble tocontestelections,andmany havebeenlulledintoasenseof falsesecuritybytheirapparent insignificanceatthepolls.There isnoroomorusefordemocratic procedureintheCommunistphilosophy.Itsstrengthistobe measuredbyitscontrolofthe tradeunionmovement,without which,accordingtoLenin,"revolutionisimpossible."Bythis test,theRedstrengthisalarming.Theycontrol,toalargeextent,thesourcesofindustrial power(coalandelectricity), heavyindustry,ironandsteel), andthetransportsystem.Hence theyareabletoparalyseindustrialanddomesticlifeandeven tocontrolthepoliciesofunions whichhaverepudiatedtheirdomination.

Sowehavetheextraordinary positionthatthevastmajorityof tradeunionistsrepudiateCommunismandallitsworks,while nonethelesstheirunionsareunderCommunistcontrol.Thisis madepossiblebythefactthat,in allthemostimportantindustries, unionismistoallintentsand purposescompulsory.Where theiraimhasbeenpervertedto securepoliticalpowerforthe CommunistParty,thepowersof theseunionsoverthelivesof theirmembershasdegenerated intothegrossestformoftyranny.Theyareabletoforcetheir politicsonunwillingunionistsby thethreatofexpulsion,theloss ofjpbs,andevenphysicalintimidation.QuiteopenlyandunashamedlytheCommunistParty proclaimsinitsliteraturethat "politicalstrikesareahigher formofstrugglethaneconomic strikes suchstrikeschallenge theGovernment,theState oneofourchieftradeunion tasksisthepoliticalisationof strikes."Suchavowedaimsdo muchtoilluminatetherealcharacterofmuchrecentindustrial disorder.TheCommunistprogrammerangesfromcontrolof thegreatindustrialtradeunions torevoutionaryactionthrough sevenphases,andthereareindicationsthattheprogrammeis welladvanced.

Fromthismasterlyanalysisof therootcausesofourindustrial strifeandoftheperiodofaCommunistcoup,theBishopsturnto constructiveremedies.Thegrave conditionintowhichthenation hasfallenisforthrightlyblamed ontheapathyofthecommunity atlarge.Andthefirstconditionforthedefeatofthe"cancerofCommunism"isgivenas prayerandpenance,whichwill bereadilyappreciatedbythose whorealisethatMarxismisa

justrightsofworkersjustasthe workermustnotpermithistrade uniontoinjuretheemployeror thecommunity.Eachindividual isresponsiblefortheactsofthe grouptowhichhebelongsunless heprotestsoractsagainstitsdecisions.Noonecanpassively acquiesceinevilpolicies.

Ofmajorimportance,too,is thedutyofthedailypressupon whichtheaveragepersondependsforhisnewsandviewsof nationalandforeignaffairs. Thereisevidenceofabelated awakeningtotheperilofCommunisminthisquarterafter yearsofapathyandconnivance. Itishopedthepresswillfulfil atrulynationalfunctioninthis respectinthecriticalyears ahead.

Finally,theBishopspointout thattradeunionscanonlyberestoredtotheirproperfunctionby unioniststhemselves.Itistheir teardutytoremovefromoffice, bydemocraticaction,thosewho havebetrayedthetrueendsfor whichunionsexist.Associations ofemployersandworkersshould betheinstrumentsofsocial peace,andcanaspireinthisdirectionbyconstantconsultation betweenthetwopartiesinthe sameindustry.Thereisnoreasonwhytheycannotworktogetherinharmonyfortheircommoninterests.Theextensionof theoperationsofthesejoint bodiesisenvisagedasafunction oftheConciliationCommissioners.Andwhattheymaybecomeisillustratedbythesuccess oftheWhitleyCouncilsinGreat Britain.

Therearesomehardwords foremployers,oratleastfor thoseof.themwhohaverefused totreattheirworkersasequal partnersinindustry.Thefailuresofarbitrationhavebeen,in largepart,duetotheantagonism ofextremistsonbothsides.The employinginterestistoblame insofarasithasbitterlycontestedreasonablereadjustmentsof hours,wages,andconditions,In thissomehaveshowngreatso-outs canbeasunjustasstrikesand playequallyintothehandsof theCommunists.Therearealso suspiciousthatcertainemployershaveattemptedtoweakentradeunionsbysappingtheir financialstrength.Suchtactics areimmoralanddoomedtofailure.Individualemployersare boundtoresistanyattackonthe

ThedutyoftheStateisto promote,butnotcoerce,thecooperationofworkersandemployers.Itcaneducateboth partiestotheadvantagesofindustrialconsultationbyaiming torestorevocationalgroups.But Governmentsmustbewareofthe tendencytosubstitutethemselvesintheplaceoffreeactivity.

"DerTag"hasarrived.At 11.30wemovedslowlyfromthe wharf,andsoonwewereheadingoutpasttheMoles.The veteranpilotboat,"LadyFor-rest,"wassoonalongsidetotake thepilotoff,andItooktheop- portunitytosaycheeriotoits crew.Iknewthemallfromold Navydays.Itwasawarmday andthecustomarysou'-wester waslaterthanusual.Itwas notlongbeforeGageRoads,the FairwayBuoy,Rottnest,and otherfamiliarpointswereleft behind.Aswewereboundfor Geraldton,thecoastwasinsight mostoftheday.

WewereoffGeraldtonatday-break.Thepilotwassoon aboard,andafterthe"Jaycee" haddinnedherhowinthegentle swellasiftobidgood-morning toagroupofchatteringlittle breakersclusteredaroundthe breakwater,itwasbutafew minutesbeforewewerealong- sidethewharf.Hatchcovers weresoonthrownoff,thewinchesgavetheirpreliminary snorts,andthefiveholds-speci- allypreparedatFremantlefor bulkwheat-weresoonuncoveredtogapelikegiantsatthe dentist's chutesasthehugeelevated swungintoactionandthe goldengrainbegantoflow.Dust waseverywhere,andtheswim thatJohnXandIhadinour afternoonbreakwasmostwelcome.Aftertea,agoodmany ofus,havingreceivedaspecial invitationduringtheday,visitedtheFlyingAngelMission,a fewhundredyardsfromtheship. WeleftGeraldtonto-daywith approximately9,200tonsof wheataboard-alsooneintoxicatedcook.Nonetoopleased withthelatter'stemporaryindisposition,theold "Chief" quicklypreparedacoldtea,consistingmainlyofcrayfish. I havealreadydiscoveredthatmy bossisratherinclinedtoview thingsfromahumourlessaspect(hewouldhavemadea wonderfulsecondmatchforVictoria;theywouldthenneverbe

Hisownfollowersregardhim asa"holyman,"andoverCongressandtheHindupopulation hissway,untilrecently,was supreme.Heisnobigot,and intohisEasternphilosophyhe hasacceptedmanyChristian tenets.

TheBritishauthoritiesinIndia,asinIrelandatonetime, haveneverfearedtherepercussionsoffamiliesorordinaryinsurrections,buthavebeenalways afraidofwoundingreligioussusceptibilities.

OnthatfactorGhandihas played. HisWesterncriticsclaimthat althoughheissincere,hissincerityhasqueertwists.Hepreaches thedoctrineofsimplicityand spinshisowncloth,yetwelcomes amongsthismostfavouredsupportersthebigCongressindustrialistswhoownmoderncloth factories.

Hiscriticsalsomaintainthat hehasahabitofreadingpeculiar meaningsintotheagreementshe makes.

Perhapswithsomelargerjustificationtheyclaimthatheis ofteneitheralittleirresponsible inhisstatements,orbadlyinformed.Hisactions,sooften madewithprotestationsofpassiveideals,havesometimesled toferociousoutbreaksofviolence.

HisprophecythatMoslemand Hinduwouldpeacefullyunite whenBritainwithdrewisquoted againsthimasoneexampleof his"unreality." Whetherthereisanyjustificationforthecritics'verdicts,or whetherGhandi'soptimisticview onIndianUnitywillbefulfilled, remainstobeseen. HisFuture-andIndia's. PossiblyGhandiwillbeoverwhelmedintheindependentIndiaembitteredbyPartition;possiblyhisinfluencewillbedestroyedbyanIndianGovernmentcomposedofWestern-trainedrulers. Ontheotherhand,hisinfluence inthepersonallivesofmillions maybetheyeastwhichwillleaventhedough,andresultinan Indiaarisingwhichtakesmuch fromthescientificdiscoveriesof theWest,butwhichdevelopson itsownAsiantraditiontofull nationhood.Inthelattercase, withitsminorityofIndianCatholics,trulyIndianandtruly Catholic,itmayhavefuturelessonsfortheWesternWorld.

Sisterwereengagedinspiritual readingonthegroundfloorof theirlittlehousewhentheywere terrifiedbyasoldierwhohad jumpedthegardenfenceandwas makingforthewindowofthe house.

Whenthesoldiersawthatthe Sistersweregoingtofleehe blockedtheexit.Afterdriving awaytheagedSister,hetriedto seizetheother.However,the youngnunwasabletotripher assailantandescaped.Wounded inthestruggleshediedafew monthslaterbecauseofsevere lossofblood.Theliliesthat waveabovehergravearelooked uponbymanyassymbolicofa martyr'spalm.

Missionariesinthe IcyRegionsofthe North

Oneofthemostseverecold wavesonrecordspreadoverthe northernregionsoftheNorth Americancontinentrecently. Themostseveretemperatures wereexperiencedinAlaskaand theYukoTerritory.AttheairportofSnagintheYukonTerritory,nearAlaska,thethermometerdroppedto78degrees belowFarenheitonJanuary 30;allrecordswerebrokenon February2,whenthetemperaturedroppedto82degreesbelow.Thelowesttemperature onrecordprevioustothiswas78 degreesbelowatGoodHopein theNorthwestTerritoryonDecember31,1910.

ThewholecountryofCanada sufferedfromthiscoldwave, transportationwasseriouslyaffected,andtherewerefoodshortagesinmanyplaces.

AnotherstageinthebeatificationcauseofFatherMichael Pro,S.J.,aherooftheMexican persecutionin1927,wasreached recently,whentheSacredCongregationofRitesexaminedhis writings-lettersandsermons.

FatherPro.wasexecutedbya firingsquadattheageof36. Incivilianclothes,attheheight ofthepersecution,heriskedhis lifenightanddayadministering thesacramentsinprivatehouses. Hediedstandingwithhis armsoutstretchedandcrying, "LongliveChristtheKing!"

AfterhisexecutionPresident Callesorderedhisbodytobe photographedinanefforttoterrifytheCatholicpopulation,but thephotographshadtheoppos- iteeffect. FatherProwasthesonofa .wealthymine-owner,buthisspe- cialfriendswereamongthepoor, andlorrydriverswerehisspecialfavourites:heusedtogive retreatsdisguisedasagarage hand. Forthedramaticnumbersgiven,thepupilsdeserveallthe praisewecangivethem,andthe heartyapplausecalledworthwas richlyearned.TheSchoolChums, intheirsketch,"TheMissing Skull,"arethemakingsofgood actors,anddidtheirpartsina typicallyvivaciousfashion.Of theseniorstudents'play,"The Bishop'sCandlesticks,"onecan trulysayitwasseldomperformedbetter.Eachcharacterwas reallywellportrayed.While thiscanbesaidofall,eventhe "gendarmes,"outstandingwere 1.Kelly,asthe"Bishcp,"G.Mur-ayasthe"Bishop'sSister,"and ,trictcustodianofhishouse'mid;whileKevinWhitelyacted hepartofthe"Convict"superbly.Theconcludingnumber-

Thestoryisofawoman,Margaret,whohasdivorcedherhusband,Hilary,tinthegroundsof insanity,andwhoispreparingto marryagaintoGrey.Herhusbandreturnsunexpectedlyfrom theasylum,andMargaretisfacedwithadilemma:herdutyto herbewilderedhusband(who knowsnothingofthedivorce) andheraffectionfortheother man.

TheLeedervillebranchesof theY.C.W.andN.C.G.M.are certainlymakinghistory.About twelvemonthsagothesebranchesproducedasplendidnonstopvarietyconcert.Theyoung peopleweresothrilledwithits successfuloutcomethattheydecidedtofilmafewshortscenes fromit.Theideagrewand graduallybegantotakeshape. 'Whybesatisfiedwithafew 'shots'?"theyasked."Let'sgo aheadandmakeafull-length film."

Anovelandcertainlyanambitiousscheme.Forthelastten monthsorsotheyhavebeenhard atwork.Auditionswerearranged,filmteststaken,andthenbegantheslowanddifficultjobof drillingamateurstoperformin frontofacamera.

Thebrancheshaveindeedbeen fortunateinhavingtheservices ofseveralprominentartistsplacedsogenerouslyattheirdisposal.Mr.JohnAnsteyhas writtenthelyricsandmusic,and thesehavebeenorchestratedby Mr.BobCampbell.

ThelittlepianoforteclassicsperformedbyLionelBatesshowed evidenceofgoodteaching.The violaduetsofMastersPapoo andMonolios,andthehumorous recitationsofyouthfulD.Donrelly(infaultlessexpressionand enunciation)wereverycreditable.MissEsler'sdancing groups,asusual,gainedwell-deservedapplause,theGavotte,especially,couldwellmakegrownupsenviousofthecharmingrhythmicmovementsofthoselittleboysand"girls"intheirchic costumesandthelatest"makeup." The"instrumentalists"enteredkeenlyintotheirperformance andwonouradmiration.There isnodoubtofthefinecultural effectsfortheboyswholearned toplaytogetherthosehighclass musicalmediaoftraining,piano, violin,etc.

Forthedramaticnumbersgiven,thepupilsdeserveallthe praisewecangivethem,andthe heartyapplausecalledworthwas richlyearned.TheSchoolChums, intheirsketch,"TheMissing Skull,"arethemakingsofgood actors,and(lidtheirpartsina typicallyvivaciousfashion.Of theseniorstudents'play,"The Bishop'sCandlesticks,"onecan trulysayitwasseldomperformedbetter.Eachcharacterwas reallywellportrayed.While thiscanbesaidofall,eventhe "gendarmes,"outstandingwere 1.Kelly,asthe"Bishop,"G.Mur-ayasthe"Bishop'sSister,"and trictcustodianofhishouse 'told;whileKevinWhitelyacted hepartofthe"Convict"superbly.Theconcludingnumber-

WhenCaptainArthurPhilip setoutfromEnglandin1787 withwhathascometobeknown astheFirstFleet,asolitaryProtestantchaplainwastheonly ministerofreligioninthecontingent.TwoIrishpriestshad offeredtoaccompanytheexpeditionattheirownexpense,but permissionwasrefusedbythe BritishGovernment.TheCatholicfreesettlersandconvicts inNewSouthWaleswerefor severalyearsleftwithoutthe consolationsofreligion.

AftertherebellioninIreland in1798,manyCatholics,includingthreepriests,weretransportedtoNewSouthWales.To oneofthese,FatherDixon,permissionwasgiventocarryout hispriestlyduties,andonMay 15,1803,thefirstofficiallypermittedMasswascelebratedin Sydney.In1808,FatherDixon returnedtoIreland,andAustraliawasagainwithoutapriest.

In1817,FatherO'Flynn,hearingofthesadplightofthousandsofhisfellow-countrymen, askedtheBritishGovernment forpermissiontogotoSydney. Therewasalongdelayingrantingthepermission,andFather O'Flynndecidedtogowithoutit. GovernorMacquarie,surprisedat thearrivalofanunauthorised Catholicpriest,orderedhimto leavethecolony,buthewasfinallypersuadedtoallowFather ;'Flynntoremainpendingthe arrivalofthepermission.The zealouspriestatonceseizedthe opportunityofexercisinghissacredministry.HewaswelcomedwithjoybytheCatholicpeople,whoflockedtohearMass andreceivetheSacraments.A fewmonthslater,withoutwarn-
