Howdifferent,then,isnotthis repeatingofaprayerfromour heartstoGod,comparedwiththe emptycriesofthepagans,thinkingthattheirfalsegodswill hearthemiftheykeepshouting louderandlouder!OurLord,as St.Matthewtellsusinthetext youhavequoted,saysthatwe mustnotprayasifGodhadto beinformedofourneeds,but ratherthatweourselvesmay haveamorevividrealisationof thetruththatallgoodgiftscome fromHim.

thatthewholemeasure,derived fromthesocialisationobjective oftheLabourParty,issupposed tobeforthecommongood,it wouldseemlogicalandliberalto consultthecommonman.In viewofthefact,moreover,that thejustcompensationtobepaid tothebanksisestimatedatbetween1;70,000,0004100,000,000, thecostofareferendumis hardlyworthtalkingabout.In anycase,areferendumisalreadyproposedforJanuaryof nextyear,sothatthereisample timetoincludethisvitalquestion. Formypart,iftherewereeffectiveguaranteesthatthenationalisationofthebankswould beemployedpurelyforeconomic ends,andnotforpoliticalpurposes,Iwouldbeinclinedto favourtheproposal.Ithas muchmoretorecommenditthan manyotheractivitiesrecently embarkeduponintheFederal sphere.Theattackontheairways,forexample,andtheproposedfreemedicalschemeare, inmyview,almostindefensible.
