Australiafacesruin!Howoftenhasthissolemnwarning beengivenfromourCatholicpulpits,andhowoftenasaresult, havewebeensneeredatasscaremongersanddescribedaspessimists,ignorantofthetruesituation?
AtlasttheGovernmenthasbeenjoltedoutofitssmugCanberrishcomplacency.Andwhatajoltitmusthavereceived! Atlasttheyhavewakeneduptothefactthatifthepopulation continuestodeclinethewayithasdoneoverthelastfewyears, itwillonlybeamatteroftime,andnotlongatthat,whenAustraliaasanationwillceasetoexist.
Thingsmusthavemoved,andmovedfast,whentheCommonwealthStatisticiangentlybrokethenewstothemthatAustraliawasadyingnation,forthenextthingwehearwasthat ImmigrationMinisterCalwellhadpackedhisbagsandwasoff onadoor-knockingtouroftheEmbassiesofEuropeinthe hopeofobtainingfreshbloodforthecountrywhichtheGovernmentinitssupinepolicyhadallowedtobedraineddry.
Well!evenifwegettheseimmigrants,andthatworthygentlemanisfindingthingsabittougherthanheexpected,wewill haveonlytouchedthesurfaceofofaproblemthatliesmuch deeperthantheGovernmenthaseverdreamedof.Thereare manyproblemsthatmustbesolvedifAustraliaistosurvive, butoneofthemosturgentisthatofcommercialisedbirthcontrol.
WhilstthisfoulbutlucrativeracketisallowedtocontinuewiththepaternalblessingoftheGovernment,wewill continuetolosemorecitizensthanMr.Calwellwithallhispropagandaandpromisescaneverhopetoobtain.
Ofitsinnatefoulnesstherecanbenoquestion.Itisa diabolicalpracticecontrarytotheethicsofChristianmorality, anddiametricallyopposedtothelawofNatureandofGod. Themoralissueatstakewillprobablyfallondeafearsofthe representativesofacountrywhichisfastbecomingpagan,but eveniftheyarenotinterestedinthemoralsideofit,they shouldatleastbeinterestedintheNationalaspectofthe wholeproblem.
Isitaprofitableconcern?Dr. HallidaySutherland,inhisbook, "TheControlofLife,"speaks forAmerica.
"Profitsinthecontraceptive tradehavebeeninvestigatedby the'JournaloftheAmerican MedicalAssociation,'andtothis Dr,A.T.Clark,Professorinthe UniversityofEdinburgh,referredtoinanoteonpatentmedicines:Arecentanalysismade inAmericaestimatesthatannualvalueofthesalesofcontraceptivestobe250milliondollars(over£50,000,000sterling).
"Thetradeincondomswhich amountedto38milliondollars, callsfornospecialcomment,exceptthatthedifferencebetween thecostofmanufacture(11 cents)andtheretailprice(161 cents)isratherhighwhenwe considerthatsincearecentexaminationinAmericashowed thatonly40percent.wereflawless."

WhatarewetosayofAustralia?Wewereunabletoprocurefiguresshowingtheactual valueofsalesofthesearticles inAustraliaowingtothefact thattheyarehandledbyseveralagencies.
Whatwedidfind,however, wastheimmenseprofitmadeon theselines ufacturers.byunscrupulousman-
Readersof"TheRecord"will rememberhowinourissueof February12weexposedthe JohnsonandJohnsonorthogynolproduct.Wewereableto produceevidencethatthiswellknownfirm,whichissupposed tocaterforeverythingforthe baby(perhapstheyshouldadd, forthosebabieswhich,despite theirefforts,managetocome
intotheworld),waslaunching anintensivecampaigntoflood themarketwiththis(asthey themselvesdescribedit)"dependableformofcontraceptive."
Immediatelythisexposurewas madepublic,thisfirmwithdrew thelucrativebonusoffer,but thisseemsarathertwo-faced move,astheirlatestpricelist stilloffersaverygoodbonus. Wecheckedwithafewchemists duringtheweek,andweretold thatthisbonusisstilloperative. Thisbonusoffer(whichthey addissubjecttorevisionorremovalonnotice)offerstife chemistwhostockshisshelves wththisproductthefollowing advantages: Ifhebuystwodozenassorted (i.e.,theactualpreparationand thenecessaryapplicator)he getsthirteentubestothe dozen. Theexpositiononthecoverpageofthisissueofthe activitiesofJohnsonandJohnsonPtd.,Ltd.,intheirat tempttowidenthedistributionofcontraceptivesinthis State,makessorryreading.AsimilarmoveinVictoria earlythisyearwasscotchedbyatimelyarticleinthe Melbourne"Advocate,"whichreprintedacircularforwardedtochemiststhroughoutAustralia.Withasmokescreenofmealy-mouthedtalkabout"strictlyethicalpromotion"ofcontraception,JohnsonandJohnsonproceeded tooffer"reallyhandsomeprofits"towhatwasalready "oneofthemostprofitableproducts"inthepharmacy. TheCatholicexposurewhichwasventilatedallthrough theCommonwealth,resultedinthewithdrawaloftheadditonalbonusofferonthepedallingofthisparticularcontraceptive.Thatthisactionwaspromptedbyalarmregardingtheirbusinessprosperityratherthanbyacontritedispositionis,however,provedbythefactthatthe bonuswithdrawalwasnotuniversal.InthisStatethere wasonlyareductionofthebonus,andthefirmconcerned isnowpreparingtolaunchamuchwidersalescampaign forsimilarproductsinthemostobjectionablemanner.

TheCatholicattitudetobirth-preventionthroughthe useofcontraceptivesistoowellknowntoneedre-statementhere.Itisbadenoughinallconscienceforareputablefirmwhictispubliclyknownascateringspecially forthechemicalneedsofbabies,tohefurtivelyplanning theirdestruction.Butitisinfinitelycontemptiblefor suchpeopletoprofesstobeactingona"strictlyethical" basis.Formoralistsofeveryschooladmitthatmasturbationisethicallyindefensible,andtheemploymentof contraceptivesisbasicallynothinglessthanmutualmasturbation.Moreover,fromtheoutlookofbusinessethics, JohnsonandJohnsonhavelentthemselvestoalineof procedurewhichcanbedignifiedbynothinghigherthan thenameof"racket."Thecolossalbonuseswhichthey haveofferedchemistsshowthattheprofitmarginiscomrletelybeyondreason,andthattheretailerisbeingencouragedtoengageinprofiteeringonagrandiosescale. Inaddition,thisfirm'smethodscannotbedefendedonthe groundsofsupplyingalegitimatedemand.Forevenapart fromtheessentialmoralillegitimacyofcontraceptives,it isclearthatthegoodsaremadeandthedemandthenartificiallycreatedbyhigh-pressuresalesmanship.
ThishistoricalmomentinAustralia'shistoryissurelyamostinfelicitiousoneforevenapagantobeassisting innationalsuicide.Nationalleadersarewarningthe Australianpeoplewithincreasinggravitythatthedecline innaturalincreasethreatensnotonlyourimmediateprosperity,buteventhecontinuedexistenceofournation.In thelasttenyearsupto500,000childrenhavebeendenied existence.Yetperhapsitistoomuchtoexpectthatpeoplewhodespisenaturalmoralitywillbestirredbypatrioticconsiderations.Meantime,asemigrantsarebeing transportedtoAustraliawithalldispatch,ourcradlesand ourhomesareemptying,andthemarkofageisallover oursociety.Weareobliginglypreparingthecountryto betakenoverbypeoplewhohavethewilltolivebyperpetuatingthemselves.Itisindeedagravehour,andone inwhichitistimeforthepoliticianstostoptalkingand toact.Thebirth-preventionists,whocannotapparently bedeterredbyrationalconsiderations,mustbetreated likeotherdangerousirresponsiblesandforciblyrestrained.Thepreventionofcontraceptionwillbethetestof politicalsincerityregardingthebirth-rate.

Inthisconnectionitisinterestingtonotethatasa resultofinter-denominationalrepresentations,theState Government,towardsthecloseof1939,broughtdowna Billtocontroltheadvertisingofcontraceptivesalongthe linesoftheVictorianLegislationof1935.Unhappily, whiletheintentoftheActwasquitesound,itspurpose waslargelydefeatedbytheinsertionoftwowords,andin thelightofsuchactivitiesasthoseofJohnsonandJohnson,itseemsthatthetimeisalreadyoverdueforits amendment.Despitetheproverbialreluctanceofpoliticianstotouchanythingpertainingtocontroversialmoral issues,thisisaquestionwhichwillhavetobefacedwithoutdelay,foritconcernsthemostfundamentalofall problems-survival.Neitherthesentimentalists,the pseudo-scientists,northe"reputable"firmsandindividuals whofattenonthisfilthytrademustbepermittedtodeter theGovernmentfromitsplaindutytoendthiceviland uglymerchandise.

Perhapsthemostformidableobstacleformanyisthefirmconvictioninwhichtheyhavebeen broughtupthattheCatholic Churchcouldnotpossiblybethe trueChurch.Thisconviction doesnotrestonanyreasoned grounds.Itisprejudicepure andsimple.Thosewhosuffer fromitwouldneverdreamofexaminingthecredentialsofthe CatholicChurch.Fromtheir earliestyearstheyhaveheard somuchevilofthatChurch, thatthethoughtofinvestigatingthedoctrinesorpractic#of Catholicsmustseemtothema dangeroustemptation. TheAssumptionofOurLady isnotindeedoneofthearticles offaithproposedbytheChurth, butitisthetraditonalbeliefof theChurch,and,accordingto PopeBenedictXIV.,thedenialof whichwouldbeimpiousandblasphemous.WehavebelievedalwaysthatOurLadybyan uniqueanticipationofthegeneralresurrectionwas,afterher death,preservedfromcorruption andsoonaftertakenintoheaven.Throughouttheworldtodaytherehasbeenanawakened interestinthisbelief,andfrom everypartoftheglobethereare arrivingattheVaticancountless petitionssignedbymillionsand millionsofCatholics,beggingthe Popetoproclaimthisfactasan articleoffaith.
DOUBLEASPECT.
Whenwemeditateonthis feastweseethatthereisadoubleaspecttowhichwemustgive attention.Thereisfirstofall theconsiderationofthehappy departureofOurLadyfromthis life,andsecondlythereisthe questionofherbodilyassumptionintoheaven.
AftertheAscensionofOur Lord,OurLadywasleftonearth forashorttime.Firstofall toincreaseherglory,andthen alsotoaidandteachtheother Apostles.Itwasduringthis timethatshewasabletoconsole themforthelosstheyfeltafter theAscensionoftheirLordand Master.Itwasduringthistime thatshewasabletotellthem manythingsaboutOurLord'sinfancy,andrevealtothemthedetailsoftheAnnunciationandthe familylifeatNazareth.Intimateglimpseswhichmusthave beenveryconsolingtothese faithfulandsorrowingfollowers ofherSon.
ShewasinJerusalemforthe descentoftheHolyGhost,and afterthat,St.John,obeyingthe lastwishofthedyingRedeemer, tookherunderhiscare.With himsheprobablywenttoEphesus,fortheFatheroftheChurch assembledthereforthegreat Councilof431,saidthatitwas theohighestprerogativeofthat citythatitwasabletooffer sheltertoSt.Johnandtothe MotherofGod.
PLACEOFBURIAL.
Wecannotbecertainofthe exactdateofherdeath,orofthe placeofherburial.Mostauthors,however,agreethatshe passedawayinJerusalem,havingbeenwarnedbeforehandby thatsameangelwhoannounced toherthewonderfulfactthat shewastobetheMotherofGod. TheageofOurLadyhasalso givenrisetomanyconflicting theories.Somesayshewas59 whenshedied,otherssayshe was63,72,orevenolder.Her deathprobablytookplaceinthe year41A.D.,forintheyear42 thereoccurredthegeneraldispersionoftheApostles. They hadremainedworkingand preachingtheGospelintheHoly Landuntilthattime,andnow thattheperiodofgracewasover andtheJewsstillrefusedtoaccepttheirteachings,theydecided tocarrythe"goodnews"(for Gospelmeansgoodnews)tothe Gentiles.Itwasalsointhe year42thatHerodAgrippaput theApostleJamestodeathand causedtheimprisonmentofSt. Peter.
DATEOFDEATH.
Thequestionofthedateofher deathhasalsocreatedmanyconflicting.opinions.Manysaythat shediedsometimeinAugust, anditwasduringthismonth thatherfeastwascelebratedin
Palestine.Otherauthorspoint totheancienttraditonthatshe diedonChristmasDay,buton accountofthefestivitiesconnectedwiththesecelebrationsher feastwascelebratedlateronin theyear.
InRometheoldestand,indeed, theonlyfeastofOurLadywas keptontheOctaveofChristmas (January1st.).Thisfeastwas keptatthemothershrineofOur Lady,theChurchofS.Maria Maggiore,inwhisehiskeptthe mangerfromBethlehem.Later onthisfeastwastransferredto theChurchofOurLadyofthe Martyrs.Themanyotherfeasts wereprobablyofByzantineorigin.TogetherwithRomethis feastwasalsocelebrafedin JanuaryinEgypt,Arabia,and France.Authorsholdingthis opinionsaythatthefeastin Augustisprobablytheanniversaryofthededicationofsome churchinherhonour,ratherthan theactualanniversaryofher death.

Whatarewetosay,then,of hertomb,sincethereisadisputeastotheactualplaceofher death.Manyofoursoldiers whowereinPalestineduringthe warvisitedJerusalem,andhad pointedouttothemthegraveof OurLady.Thisissituatedinthe gardenofGethsemani,notfarindeedfromthehillofCalvary. IsthistherealtombofOur Lady?Hereagainopinionsdiffer.Thosewhoholdtheaffirmitiveviewpointtothetotheancienttraditionsupportingthis fact,whileothersqueryit,remarkingthatitisstrangethat thefamouspilgrimsofancient timeshavenotmentioneditin theirdescriptionsanddiariesof theirtravels.Amongthese theylistSt.Helena(326-328), thqwifeoftheEmperorConstantine,whobroughtbackto RometheTrueCrossonwhich OurSavioursuffered.ThefamousPilgrimsofBordeaux(383), St.Basil(356),andSt.Gregory (379).
Ifwecannotbecertainofthese actualplacesandtimes,wecan becertainthatOurLady'sdeath wasnotlikethedeathofother mortalbeings.Her'swasnot causedbybodilyinfirmityordis-
ease,butratherthroughthe vehemanceofherloveofGod.In theancientmartyrologieswhereinarelistedthefeastsofallthe Saints,herdeathisalwaysdescribedasthe"Transitus,"or passingoveroftheBV.M.,her "fallingasleep,"her"birthday," her"glory."

ThePressreactionswereinterestingintheirtypicality-the soundandfuryofembittered mendisappointedintheirhopes andcheatedoftheirprey.The poor,bedraggled"HeraldTribune,"inNewYork,derived somestrangeconsolationfrom theirrelevantandillogicalreflectionthattheSpanishreferendumservedtodemonstrate that"WesternEurope,too,has itspolicestate."Itwentonto saythattheSpanishproblem stillconfrontedthereluctant West,anditwasimpossibleto pretendthatitwasnosource.of concerntotheUnitedStates.
Suchchatteriseitherwoollyor malicious.ForwhatistheSpanishProblem?Wehavebeen assuredforthelasteightyears thatitconsistedintheexistence inSpainofaFascistdictatorshipwhichhadimposedaruthless,inefficientruleofironupon aseethingbutinarticulatepeople.Well,thedictatorshiprather over-reacheditsFascismlast monthbyinquiringwhetherthe Spanishpeoplewantedittocontinue,andtheSpaniards,likeone man,said:"Prospera,procede, regna!"andhungtheyokecheer-
Thechildrenofthisworld,includingthePress,theMarxists, andthemadLiberals(whonever knowwhat'sgoingon)havehad theiranswer,andtheyhavehad itintermsoftheiroriginal moralindignation.ForFranco had,theysaid,overthrowna "constitutionally-electedgovernment"(savethemark!).Well, Franco'sregimehasnowreceivedtheaccoladeofthepeople's willwithaheartinessnoother moderngovernmentmayhopeto achieve.Morethan78percent. oftheregisteredelectorsvoted andevenintheallegedantiFrancoBasqueprovinces75per centvoted.Theresultwasa twelvetoonevictory,andperferviddemocratsofeveryhueand pretextmaynotethatvotingwas notcompulsory.Spain'senemieshavesneeredthata"No" votewouldnothavemeantanything,andtheFrancodictatorshipwouldhavecontinued.SurelytheiraddledbrainsmustrealisethathadSpainrejectedits ruler,theagitationinU.N.O. wouldhavereceiveditsonlysolid endorsement,andgiventheUnitedNationsamplejustificationfor directaction.

Greece,likeSpain,haditsbrood ofQuislings,thefifthcolumn,as Francodubbedit,andoutsidethe countryarabbleofrevolutionariesrecruitedanddomiciledon thesoilofcountriesnotopenly atwar.Likewise,inbothcases, thearmedforcesofforeigninterventionarepresent.Moscow's trainedanarchistsareherealso supportedbytheInternational Brigade-theKremlin'smercenaryriff-raff.AndBritainplays inGreecetherolewhichthelate AxisPowersplayedinSpain. Whatevertheirimmediateaims andobjectives,theultimateeffectoftheirinterventionisthe same-thepreservationofEuropefromBolshevism.Itisa causetowhicheverymanwho lovesGodandlibertywillrally withoutstint. TheWestAustralianauxiliary oftheBritishandForeignBible Society celebrated its63rd.annualmeetingduringtheweek. Whiletheexistenceofsuchsocietiesmaybeconsideredthe logicaloutcomeoftheProtestant principlethattheBibleisthe soleruleofFaith,itisworth nothingthatsuchsocietiesarea lateoutgrowthofProtestantism. ThefoundationoftheBritish andForeignBibleSocietyin1804 wastheoutcomeofthegreatreactionagainstthereligious apathyandinfidelityoftheEnglishpeopleintheeighteenthcentury.Amongthenumerous missionarysocietieswhichsprang intoexistenceatthattime,the BibleSocietywasthemostfamousandeffective.Itgavethe leadtosimilardevelopmentson theContinentandinAmerica.
Butwhileonemustbeimpressed bythestatisticsofitsenormous distributionsandtranslations, onemustenquirewhetherthe numberofBiblesdisseminated throughout,.theworldbetokena religiousrevivalanymorethan themerenumericalstrengthofa Church.Theoriginalobjective oftheBibleSociety-"toencouragethewidercirculationof theScriptureswithoutnoteor comment"-hasbecomeincreasinglyanembarrassmenttoProtestantmissionaries.Thatno notablemovementofconversion hasfolloweduponthepromiscuousdistributionoftheScrip- turesisplaintoall.Itiseven questionablewhethersuchmethodsofpropagationdonotlend themselvesmoretoprofanation andabusethantothegrowthof religion.
Itisnot,ofcourse,remarkable thatProtestantismhascometo leanuponitsownmethodof readingtheScripturesthanupon Christ'sinjunctiontopreachthe Word,toteachallnationsevery- thingthatHehasrevealed.For thisreasontheChurchisinop- positiontotheactivitiesofBible Societies.Theimpellingmotive oftheirworkisthefundamental errorofprivateinterpretationof theScriptures.Inearliertimes whentheworldwasinastronger streamoftraditionaltruth,such adoctrinemighthavegoneunchallenged.Butnow,withthe decayofFaith,theverybasisof theProtestantpositionisunder mined.Whentheinspirationof theScripturesthemselvesischallengedtheyhavenoadequate answer,fortheChurchexisted beforetheBible,anditsinteg- ritywasestablishedbythe Church.Moreover,theplainex- perienceofProtestantismhas shownclearlythatasureknowledgeoffaithandmoralscannot besufficientlyderivedfromthe Scriptures.ThemoretheBible isstudied,fromtheangleofpri- vateinterpretation,thewiderbecomethedivisionsofProtestantism.TheBibleSocietiesmerelymakeconfusiontwiceconfounded.

see,whovaluesartisticentertainmentinanyform,andfor whomthescreenmustlargely substituteto-dayforwhatthe stagerepresentedinthepast,so farasthedramaticformisconcerned.

BornatSt. Stephen's,Cornwall,England, in1881,thedeceasedladywas aconvertto theChurch whichsheenteredonher marriageto Mr.PatrickJosephDunne.She cametoAustraliawithherhusbandin1910,andforthreeyears hadexperienceofstationlifein NewSouthWales.Shecameto theWestin1913,andsettled firstatAlbanyandlateratNortham.DuringWorldWarI., whenherhusbandwasengaged asahealthinspector,thelate Mrs.DunnevoluntarilyundertookthecleaningoftheCathedral.After5or6yearsspent inPerth,Mr.andMrs.Dunne tookuplandinMundaring.Their property,"SevenSpirings,"is oneofthebest-wateredblocksin thehills,andheretheybuilta beautifulgranitehome.
Mrs.Dunnewasoneofthe movingspiritsinthebuildingof theMundaringChurch.On grounddonatedbyMrs.Reddy, adebt-freechutrchwasbuiltin graniteinhonouroftheSacred Heart.Toalargeextentit Wandsasamemorialtothelate Mrs.Dunne,whowaswidely knownandlovedintheMundaringdistrict.Heractivitywith theAltarSocietyandwith everythingappertainingtothe Churchwaswellknowntoasuccessionofvisitingpriests.
RequiemMasswasofferedby FatherKelly,ofMidlandJunction,atAllHallowsChurch,Inglewood,onJune21,afterwhich thefuneraltookplaceatKarrakatta.Thepall-bearerswere: Messrs.G.Cowley,W.P.Neave, F.Law,G.Whitely,R.Andrews, D.R.Cox,N.G.P.Phillips,and T.Doney.
