SundayObservance

ProbablyofApostolic Origin

SABBATHCHANGEDBY L.Martin,SouthPerth: "Pleasewillyouexplainto me:1,Why?and2,When? and3,byWhom?wasthe SabbathchangedfromSaturday,theseventhday,toSunday,thefirstdayoftheweek?

Ican'tfindanything,inthe Bibletocausethatchange. HopingIshallbeabletounderstandbyyouranswer."

ASt.IgnatiusofAntioch (d.A.D.106),inhislettertothe ChurchatMagnesia,wrotein thefirstyearsofthesecondcentury:

"Ifyehaveattainedtotherenewalofhope,nolongerwillye observetheSabbath,butwill sanctifythedayoftheLord, thatdayonwhichthroughHis deathwehavereceivedLife.' TheLord'sDay,thefirstdayof theweek,wasprimarily,andis stillintheeyesoftheChurch, aHolyDayratherthanaday merelyofrest(theSabbath).

ItisnotcertainwhenpreciselytheChristianChurchbegantosanctifythefirstdayof theweek, butIdon'tthinkthat weshallbeveryfarwrongin thinkingitwasfromthevery daywhentheLordandFounder oftheChurchrosefromthe deadonthefirstdayofthe week.Itmayperhaps be takenasanindicationofthis, thatthefirstandsecondappari- tionsoftheRisenLordandthe DescentoftheHolySpiriton theApostles, tookplaceonthe firstdayoftheweek, whenthe Apostlesandthediscipleswere assembled.Thefact, too, that throughoutalltheearlychurcheswehaveabundanttestimonyinthethirdandfourth centuries, thatthefirstdayof theweekwasuniformlykeptas aspecialday, wouldtendto provethatthisobservancewas ofApostolicorigin.Wehave, ofcourse, plentyofevidence thattheJewishSabbathwas stillobservedintheChristian Churchforquitealongtime, eveninGentilechurches,i.e., Christiancommunitiescomposed ofconvertedpagans.

TherenownedChristianarcheologist,Mgr-Duchene,has suggestedthatintheearlychurchesofJewishorigin, thetransitionfromtheSabbathtothe Sundaymayhavebeengradual; thefaithfulmeetingontheSabbathandprolongingtheevening meetingthroughoutthenight andcelebratingtheGreatChristianSacrificeintheearlyhours oftheSundaymorning;hecites theHolySaturdayOfficeand Massasanexampleofthesur- vivalofthispractice.

FromtheHolyScripturesitis clearthatthefirstdayofthe week ofwasmarkedoutastheday prayerintheChurchSince thetworeferenceswehaveare merelyincidental,theyareall themorecogentasproofs.Here theyare.:St.Luke(ActsXX., 7)speaksofthefaithfulat Troasassembled"tobreakbread onthefirstdayoftheweek." St.PaulcommandstheChristiansofCorinthtoputbytheir contributionstowardshiscollection,onthefirstday(I.Cor. XVI.,2).Andfinally,before St.JohntheEvangelist'sdeath,thedayhadachieveditsdistinctivelyChristianname;forhe writes:"Iwasinthespiriton theLord'sDay."(Apoc.1,10.)

FromSt.Paul'sEpistletothe Colossians(11,16),wemayconcludethattheobservanceofthe JewishSabbathwasnolonger obligatoryontheChristians,for hesays:"Letnoman,therefore,

CHURCH'SAUTHORITY judgeyou inrespectofthe Sabbaths."

Youask,Mr.Martin,whyand bywhatauthoritythischange wasmade?

A.:By Church.theauthorityofthe ChristOurLordgave allpowertotheChurchto

speakinHisName:Hegavethe powertobindandloose;Hetold HisApostlestoteachallnations.allthingstheyweretobelieveanddo,andthatHewould bewiththemuntiltheendof time.TheChurchthen,since theDivineMasterhadchosen theFirstDayoftheweekina specialmannertobewhatSt. JohntheBelovedDisciplecalls "TheLord'sDay,"byrising fromthedeadonthatday,and byappearingtoHisdiscipleson thatday,andbysendingHis HolySpirittobewiththe Churchonthatday-theChurch hassetitapartasthespecial HolyDayoftheweek,inHis honourandinaccordancewith Hischoice.
